A quarter-century after lending his voice to Z in Disney’s CG feature “Antz,” Woody Allen is set to return to the recording booth and narrate the upcoming Spanish animated short “Mr. Fischer’s Chair,” which will formally add several key co-producers during this year’s Annecy Festival. The film’s directors have also given Variety an exclusive look at early concept art for the project.
“Mr. Fischer’s Chair” revisits the 1972 World Chess Championship, where Bobby Fischer faced off against Boris Spassky. During game 17 of their “Match of the Century,” the Soviet team accused the Americans of manipulating Fischer’s chair to maliciously harm his opponent, leading to an exhaustive examination of the Eames Executive seat.
The film is created and directed by filmmakers and producers Xosé Zapata and Lorenzo Degl’ Innocenti, who recently teamed on the Spanish Academy Goya Award-winning animated short “The Monkey.” Zapata is handling the screenplay.

Anointed a blues-guitar prodigy before he was old enough to drive, 40-year old Austin, Texas, native Gary Clark Jr. has spent much of his career thinking outside his primary genre, and his latest, Jpeg Raw, sounds more than ever like the music Clark wants to make rather than the music folks think he makes.
Since as early on as his second album, the underrated 2015 collection The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, Clark has embraced everything from fuzzy rock to funk to Prince-ly psychedelia. Jpeg Raw continues his never-ending quest for new fire,...

Dear future "Love Is Blind" contestants: Please don't serenade your love interest. No matter how sweet the gesture may seem, how much you practice in the shower, or how confident you are that it could result in a future record deal, singing in the pods is henceforth off limits, per requests from countless fans.
Unfortunately, this crucial PSA wasn't disseminated before season four of the dating series was filmed, so two men succumbed to the temptation. In episode three, both Kwame Appiah and Zack Goytowski attempt to woo Chelsea Griffin and Irina Solomonova, respectively, by singing to them. The cringe I experienced was hard to ignore. Both moments are worth dissecting individually, so let's begin with Appiah, shall we?
Despite his palpable disappointment at being turned down by Micah Lussier, the 33-year-old sales development manager continues pursuing Griffin and decides to create an original song for her to stay on the show showcase his dedication.

For the residents of El Eco, the rural hamlet that gives Tatiana Huezo’s new film its name, life and death are inseparable — not in an abstract sense, but in the here and now, the day-to-day. Animals must be herded and cared for and sometimes slaughtered, crops planted and harvested, and schoolchildren are often right on the frontline with their parents, watching, learning, doing. Taking it all in, they’re smart and inquisitive, kids at their most unself-conscious and open, and with Ernesto Pardo’s extraordinary camerawork holding them close, you might find it hard to let them go. You might wish that Huezo would perhaps return for a follow-up, a Mexico-set spin on Michael Apted’s indelible Seven Up films.
After delving into narrative for the first time with Prayers for the Stolen, the Mexican-Salvadoran filmmaker returns to her nonfiction roots with this intimately observed exploration of tough and tender realities.

Exclusive: As reams of Comic-Con attendees mill around dressed as flesh eaters or take part in zombie-themed events, filmmaker Greg Nicotero and his Monster Agency Productions has teamed with Jimmy Miller’s Mosaic to mount a movie about the making of George Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. From unlikely origins and a budget around 115,000, the film hatched the whole zombie genre and is regarded as arguably the greatest horror movie ever.
Nicotero is one of many creatives in film, TV and video games who’ve benefited from Romero’s pioneering in the carnivorous-corpse genre. He has directed 39 episodes of The Walking Dead, including the series finale he’s still finishing. Although he’s got a long list of genre credits, Nicotero actually learned his craft on Romero’s films. They are both from Pittsburgh — and so, for that matter, is Miller — and they all knew each other well.
