New Delhi, Feb 26 (Ians) India’s elite runners Man Singh, Belliappa A.B. and Karthik Kumar clinched the podium positions in the New Delhi National Marathon here on Sunday and also qualified for the 2023 Asian Games in September.
All three went under the qualifying mark of 2 hours and 15 minutes in an exciting run that went down to the wire much to the delight of cheering fans all along the picturesque route in the heart of the Indian Capital.
Man Singh, who recorded his personal best of 2:16:58 just last month, clocked an impressive 2:14.13 to win the coveted gold medal as well as the cash prize of Rs 1,50,000.
Belliappa (2:14.15), who was breathing down his neck in the final leg, finished just two seconds behind to improve upon his own best by over 2 minutes. He pocketed the silver medal in the process.

New Delhi, Feb 25 (Ians) World 800m record holder and double Olympic champion David Rudisha has urged Indias top athletes to go all out in the Apollo Tyres New Delhi National Marathon on Sunday and qualify for the Asian Games later this year.
Speaking at the pre-marathon press conference on Saturday, Kenya’s legendary middle-distance runner pointed out that this was the last opportunity and platform for India’s top marathoners to win their berths for the Hangzhou Games in September.
“The weather is perfect. I believe the flat course is also ideal for a marathon. So remain confident, don’t lose sight of your targets and give it your all,” Rudisha said.
“Marathon is a very special race, the oldest sport in the world in fact,” he said, marvelling at the sport that demands high levels of resilience and endurance.

Organised under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India and Fit India, the iconic run, certified as the National Marathon, will start and finish at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The route will cover key landmarks in the heart of the city, including Humayun’s Tomb, Lodhi Garden and Khan Market.
Being an inclusive Run, the event will also see differently-abled people go the distance along with the rest of the runners.
