“Outlander” fans were out in force last weekend, congregating down under in Sydney and Melbourne for Hublander: A Visit to the Highlands, a first-of-its-kind convention for the TV blockbuster, featuring an hour-long Q&a with star Sam Heughan and hilarious hour-long chats with co-stars Duncan Lacroix, John Bell and Charles Vandervaart.
Gold Derby attended the event and was the only media outlet with exclusive one-on-one access to the show’s leading man backstage. “Good to see you guys, in person and not on Zoom! It’s just amazing, we’re having the best time,” Heughan declared. “It’s great to see all the fans down under and it’s so nice to see the fans come from all over.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Outlander season seven came to a mid-season stop this month with events hanging in the balance for the Fraser and MacKenzie families. While Jamie and Claire were relieved to leave the American Revolutionary War when they were tasked with accompanying a kinsman’s body back to Scotland, things were much more fraught for Roger and Bree, whose son Jem was kidnapped by one of Bree’s co-workers.
After going through a box of Roger and Bree’s letters from Jamie and Claire and finding out that wee Jem perhaps knows where the Jacobite gold is buried over in America, the dastardly Rob Cameron snatched Jem up and took him into the past, back through the trusty stones at Craigh na Dun, to retrieve the tantalizing treasure.

Once again, we've got two entirely different stories at play, threaded together by Claire's letter, written her present and in Brianna's past.
Another tie that binds them both is how the family is in grave danger -- Brianna's family due to the nefarious Rob Cameron and Claire's due to the wages of war.
Outlander Season 7 Episode 7 sets up the midseason finale with aching realities that we know will carry well into the second half of the season.
Let's start with the good. Roger MacKenzie and his great great great (many greats) Grandda put the past behind them and started fresh.
There's something about time travel that allows for bygones being bygones.
Buc stumbled through the stones in much the same way that Claire did, at least according to him.

By the end of this week’s Outlander, two Fraser men are in very bad straits, with no clear rescue in sight.
“Well, actually, Jem is a MacKenzie,” you just thought. Ok, Ok — two men with Fraser blood coursing through their adventurous, often-in-peril bodies are left in seriously worrisome ways as we head into next week’s midseason finale. The aforementioned Jeremiah has been kidnapped by Rob Cameron (whom we all kinda knew was a tartan trash bag, right?), and Jamie closes the episode face-down on a field following the first Battle of Saratoga.

War is ugly, but every once in a while, even those in the thick of it catch a break.
After being captured by the Redcoats on Outlander Season 7 Episode 6, Claire caught such a break.
But even catching that break, this war will feel like an eternity as long as Jamie and his son are in opposition.
As I've noted before, I've not read far enough in the Outlander books to know if William ever becomes aware that Jamie is his birth father, but signs keep pointing in that direction.
Now that he's in America, he's crossing paths with the family on multiple occasions, and I can't help but sense that he will soon feel conflicted about his allegiance to the Crown.
William was raised by good people. He's got kindness in his heart, and even in short interactions with him, Claire realized how much he's like the husband she loves so much.

The most fascinating aspect of the “Game of Thrones” presence at this year’s Emmys is the fact that the show took a year off. The first six seasons were an annual presence at “TV’s biggest night,” becoming relatively predictable for their ability to dominate, especially in the below-the-line categories. But the HBO fantasy drama was absent from the 2017 awards after premiering too late in the year to qualify, allowing a whole new crop of dramas to vie for glory.
That delay meant that one of TV’s winning-est series is eligible again this year, and anyone who might have thought a summer premiere would lead to a decrease in nominations was very much mistaken; the veteran series received 22 nominations for its seventh season, the most of any show. However, many of those upstart new dramas are still in the race, making this year’s competition a fascinating one.

Despite winning three Emmy Awards for their work on “Game of Thrones,” set decorator Rob Cameron and production designer Deborah Riley had never been nominated by the BAFTAs until this year. However, first time proved to be the charm as they prevailed in a tough race against teams from the satirical series “Black Mirror,” the historical drama “The Crown” and the political thriller “The State.”
I kicked off our lively conversation backstage by asking if it was difficult to simply watch the finished episodes or whether they sat in front of their TVs and critiqued their sets and designs. Riley readily admitted, “When I first read the script, I’m definitely a fan. With the second read, I become a member of the crew. It’s when I become serious.” Concurred Cameron, “When we’re watching the episodes I definitely just look at what we’ve done and analyze it.

We are very pleased that our own Carlos Aguilar has been selected as IndieWire announces finalists for the 2014 IndieWire | Sundance Institute Fellowship For Film Criticism.
For the first time, IndieWire is launching a new partnership with the Sundance Institute in memory of the late film critic Roger Ebert: The IndieWire | Sundance Institute Fellowship For Film Criticism will help send six aspiring film critics to the Sundance Film Festival for the duration of the Park City gathering.
This initiative, generously supported by the Roger Ebert Scholarship for Film Criticism, follows successful workshops along similar lines that IndieWire helped organize in Locarno and New York. For the Sundance Fellowship, we received more than 450 applications around North America, a startling number filled with countless strong, passionate writers with a broad range of sensibilities.
IndieWire has written that '...It was a painfully tough decision to whittle our list down to six finalists, but we couldn’t be happier with caliber of the accepted critics, whose names we’re excited to unveil today'.
During Sundance, these critics will review numerous world premieres at the festival in addition to tracking buzz, contributing to RogerEbert.com and our own Criticwire blog. They will also have the chance to analyze the state of their craft by working alongside several critic “mentors” and experience innumerable networking opportunities at the most prominent festival in America.
Further from IndieWire, '...You’ll be hearing a lot from them in these parts even before the festival kicks off on January 16, so get used to these names, and stay tuned for more details about each of them.'
Their names:
Carlos Aguilar

"Václav Havel, the dissident playwright who wove theater into politics to peacefully bring down communism in Czechoslovakia and become a hero of the epic struggle that ended the Cold War, has died. He was 75." Karel Janicek for the AP: "Havel was his country's first democratically elected president after the nonviolent 'Velvet Revolution' that ended four decades of repression by a regime he ridiculed as 'Absurdistan.' … Havel left office in 2003, 10 years after Czechoslovakia broke up and just months before both nations joined the European Union. He was credited with laying the groundwork that brought his Czech Republic into the 27-nation bloc, and was president when it joined Nato in 1999. Shy and bookish, with wispy mustache and unkempt hair, Havel came to symbolize the power of the people to peacefully overcome totalitarian rule."
