2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.
The 81st Annual Venice Film Festival is set for August 28 to September 7. Variety is reporting that among the films that are being rumored for screenings is the Todd Phillips follow-up to the Joaquin Phoenix reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime. Joker: Folie à Deux, which co-stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, is said to...

The upcoming Venice Film Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded affair with Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gal Gadot and Ana de Armas among top Hollywood talents likely to be launching high-profile titles from the Lido.
Though festival chief Alberto Barbera has yet to see several submitted works that are likely to make the cut, a clutch of globally buzzy movies have already secured a coveted Venice berth, though some of the more mainstream entries will probably be bowing out-of-competition.
“Joker 2: Folie à Deux,” Todd Phillips’ edgy musical sequel to his 2019 Golden Lion prizewinning “Joker,” starring Gaga and Phoenix, is a competition shoo-in, along with Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas biopic “Maria,” starring Jolie in the title role.

Johnny Depp has been on the longest hiatus of his career ever since making it in Hollywood. Even with his defamation case with Amber Heard having settled, fans wondered just when he would step in front of the camera again. That came at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, when Depp and director Maïwenn unveiled Jeanne du Barry, the actor’s first film since 2020’s Minimata. Now, Depp is giving due credit to his director for standing by his side and giving him the chance that even some of his closest collaborators were hesitant to.
Posting on Instagram, Depp shared a photo from a red carpet event for Jeanne du Barry – in which he plays Louis Xv – along with the following caption: “Endlessly grateful to the incomparable Maïwenn for choosing me as her King of France in ‘Jeanne du Barry’. After last week’s drama with Geordie clearing Will of reckless driving in a fatal motorcycle accident, the Grantchester writers knew we needed a laugh. Or, at the very least, a reason for Geordie to repeatedly roll his eyes before Will’s brooding continued. Just a year ago, the image of Johnny Depp smiling and waving atop the Palais steps at the Cannes Film Festival would have been unthinkable to most — including to Depp, himself.
“When you hit the bottom, you hit the bottom, you hit the bottom, then you find the basement to the bottom,” Depp told The Associated Press the day after “Jeanne du Barry”, in which he stars as King Louis Xv, opened Cannes.
This time last year, Depp was immersed in a libel trial he brought against Amber Heard, his ex-wife, based on a 2018 Washington Post op-ed piece in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” A British court had ruled in 2020 that a tabloid labeling Depp “a wife beater” were “substantially true.” Soon after the ruling in the U.K., Hollywood had largely cut ties with Depp, jettisoning him from both the “Fantastic Beasts...

Johnny Depp has marked a return in one of the most prestigious ways by landing a standing ovation during the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, where his latest film Jeanne du Barry made its world premiere.
Following the Tuesday night screening, Johnny Depp was met with a seven-minute ovation from the Cannes crowd, leaving him visibly teary-eyed and honored. This is undoubtedly a high mark in the past few years of Johnny Depp, following his tabloid-friendly defamation lawsuit with ex-wife Amber Heard. The Cannes debut of Jeannue du Barry marked his first public appearance since the trial.
Depp himself address claims of a Hollywood boycott in the Cannes press conference, as reported by Deadline. “Did I feel a boycott by Hollywood? Well, you’d have to not have a pulse to feel at that point, ‘None of this is happening, it’s just a weird joke or I have been asleep for 35 years.

After the disruption and near devastation brought on by the Covid pandemic, and concerns that the rising tide of global streamers would wash away the business model of independent film distributors worldwide, buyers and sellers arrive on the Croisette this year on a wave of good (ish) news on the return of the theatrical business and a bumper crop of big movies, both blockbuster-y and arthouse-esque, up for sale at the Marché.
“The box office in North America is back up pretty close [to pre-pandemic levels],” notes Rob Carney, vp of sales at FilmNation, referencing first-quarter figures that showed domestic revenues of $1.8 billion, just 25 percent off the record highs of 2019. French actress-writer-director Maïwenn has confessed to a bit of Franco-American culture clash on the set of her latest movie, Jeanne du Barry. The Cannes opener stars Johnny Depp in his first feature film role in three years, as Louis Xv, and Maïwenn as the 18th century monarch’s favorite mistress. In a recent interview with French Premiere, the filmmaker said that she had been warned not to knock on Depp’s dressing-room door during filming to let him know she was waiting. “One day, I did it anyway,” she said. “And there, he made me understand that I had committed an unacceptable intrusion and asked me how I would have felt if he came knocking on my dressing room door. I replied that everyone does it all the time. Because that’s how a set works in France!”
That’s how a set works in Hollywood, too, or it should anyway.

Johnny Depp’s once white-hot career has flamed out in the wake of his many scandals, but the controversial actor has every reason to expect a movie star welcome when he hits Cannes on Tuesday for the premiere of “Jeanne du Barry.” The costume drama is Depp’s first leading role in three years, a period of time in which the star has mostly made headlines for his ongoing legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard.
But through that tempestuous period, one that saw Depp fired from high-profile projects like the “Harry Potter” spinoff franchise “Fantastic Beasts,” Europe has remained a port in the storm. He has continued to be celebrated at film festivals throughout the continent with audiences loyally showing up to see the movies he has managed to make in between tabloid appearances. Italian producer Luciano Sovena, who was instrumental to bringing early works by several of Italy’s now-prominent auteurs such as Alice Rohrwacher, Luciano Frammartino, and Saverio Costanzo, to the big screen, has died. He was 73.
News of Sovena’s sudden death was announced on Sunday by the Rome and Lazio Film Commission Foundation, of which he was president. The cause of death was not disclosed.
The foundation paid tribute to Sovena as “A great and generous professional; a friend of Italian cinema,” in a statement. It went on to note that he was “Ironic, ‘simpatico’ and open to everyone.”
Prior to heading Rome’s film commission – which runs Italy’s top regional film fund – Sovena was for a long stretch managing director of Italy’s state film entity Istituto Luce.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival could be a defining moment for Johnny Depp’s acting career comeback. Jeanne du Barry will open this year’s festival on the evening of May 16 in a coup for Depp and widely known French multihyphenate Maïwenn. The period royal drama stars Depp as King Louis Xv, while Maïwenn plays the titular character in addition to directing.
The following day, Depp will participate in the festival’s official press conference for Jeanne du Barry, according to sources familiar with his schedule.
The various events — as well as the movie itself — will provide a chance for Hollywood to assess Depp’s current composure. “I haven’t seen the movie, but it feels like was a good way for him [Depp] to get into back into everything,” says a veteran specialty distributor.

Johnny Depp is proving to be as bankable as ever, signing a deal with Dior for around $20 million, a record for any male in the fragrance industry. Reports say this easily tops deals with the likes of Brad Pitt, Robert Pattinson and Chris Pine.
The Dior deal is a major turning point in Johnny Depp’s endorsements. While many continued to support him, his reputation was in jeopardy during the much-publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard last year, which focused on claims of defamation between the former couple. While Heard eventually settled and revealed she would be relocating from Hollywood to Spain, Depp has moved on in a far more lucrative and publicist-friendly way, with this landmark three-year contract showing that he has come out on top in more ways than one.

Dior is doubling down on its relationship with Johnny Depp.
The French luxury fashion house and cosmetics giant, which stood by the star even when he faced choppy PR waters amid his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, has signed Depp to a massive deal, marking the biggest men’s fragrance pact ever.
Sources peg the three-year deal at upwards of $20 million, which eclipses Robert Pattinson’s $12 million deal to serve as a spokesperson for Dior Homme and Brad Pitt’s $7 million pact to promote Chanel No. 5. A source familiar with the fragrance industry says most A-listers with fragrance deals pull in around $2 million-$4 million per year like Chris Pine, whose deal with Armani is valued at $4 million a year over 3 years.
Dior didn’t respond to a request for comment. A rep for Depp declined comment.

It's the 10th anniversary of the best post-2000 Bond movie. Sam Mendes' 2012 spy film "Skyfall" is the twenty-third in the long-running series of James Bond movies, an atmospheric masterwork that features Daniel Craig's third performance as the fictional MI6 agent.
"Skyfall" sees Bond re-entering into MI6 service after his assumed shooting death and taking on a mission which sends him to the brave new world of Shanghai in pursuit of a mercenary known as Patrice (Ola Rapace), the man for whom the bullet that wounded Bond was intended for. Bond is tasked by his MI6 superior M (Judi Dench) to find Patrice, the sensitive hard drive he holds, and information about his mysterious employer. The ensuing confrontation is gorgeously lit and impeccably shot under the supreme lens of cinematographer Roger Deakins; the two men fight in silhouette, backlit by LED panels of bright, glowing jellyfish, and few words are...

Johnny Depp and lawyer Joelle Rich, one of the attorneys who represented him in his UK libel case against The Sun, have broken up, per People. Johnny Depp reemerged in front of movie and television fans last night, appearing as the astronaut mascot at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Well, sort of. An apparently pre-recorded video of Depp’s head was planted on the body of the Moonperson (formerly known as the Moon Man) strung from the ceiling.
Johnny Depp made three brief appearances throughout the show. During his first appearance, he told the audience, “Hey, you know what? I needed the work.” Later on, he said, “I just want you guys to know I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need. Anything. You name it.” Depp as a ring bearer sounds promising…

Johnny Depp made a surprising appearance at the VMAs on Aug. 28 just months after his highly publicized defamation trial. The actor popped up as a moon person on live television during the 2022 MTV VMAs. In the beginning of the show, an astronaut with Depp's face peeking through the helmet appeared on stage and said, "And you know what? I needed the work." Depp shared a similar video on his Instagram, where he says, "I just want you guys to know that I'm available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need."
The appearance comes three months after his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. The jury found Heard liable for defamation, and Depp was awarded 10 million in compensatory damages and 5 million in punitive damages. During that same verdict, jurors found Depp liable for defamation for one statement, and Heard was awarded 2 million in compensatory damages.

Johnny Depp is rumored to make a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards next weekend.
This comes after the former Pirates of the Caribbean actor inked a new lucrative deal with Dior.
Depp has been the face of the Sauvage fragrance for several years and has signed on to continue.
Despite successfully suing Amber Heard at the defamation trial back in May, Depp is still battling it out in court with his ex-wife.
They are both appealing the jury verdict in which he won all three counts of defamation while the actress won one count of defamation and was awarded 2 million.
The jury awarded Depp 10.35 million after they ruled that Heard’s allegations of “sexual violence” and “domestic abuse” were false and defamed Depp.

Johnny Depp is set to return back to the director’s chair after 25 years to helm a biopic on the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
Based on the play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for the screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, the film will tell the story of the painter and sculptor in Paris in 1916.
