This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being discussed here wouldn't exist. This article contains spoilers for "One Piece."
We've seen so many live-action adaptations of stories that have been previously told in animation in just the past decade, from Disney classics to beloved anime. And it's easy for creatives to feel the need to try and "fix" or change elements of the characterization for live-action. Sometimes these changes are for the better, like correcting caricatures from insensitive times, but sometimes they feel arbitrary and make the characters unrecognizable. Somehow, the live-action "One Piece" show has the perfect balance of changing just enough to make these cartoon characters work in real life while staying true to the 2D characters audiences have loved for over 25 years.

Plot: Salt-of-the-earth Cole falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie — but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world.
Review: Thanks to the blockbuster films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Evans has become synonymous with Captain America. Through roles in Knives Out and Defending Jacob, Evans has tried to stretch himself beyond the realm of comic books by selecting projects that are nowhere near comparisons to Steve Rogers. With Ghosted, Evans takes on a role that could not be any less like his iconic superhero role while still allowing him to have fun with stunts, spectacle, and a fair amount of comedy. Chris Evans saved the world (and even the universe) multiple times as Captain America. But in his latest Apple TV+ action film “Ghosted,” it’s Ana de Armas who’s doing the rescuing.
“It was great. I mean, we’ve all seen Ana be badass; she was so good in [‘No Time to Die’],” Evans told Variety at the New York premiere of “Ghosted” on Tuesday night. “It was nice to be the damsel in distress. It was nice to need saving — primarily because I didn’t have to sweat during the action sequences.”
Directed by Dexter Fletcher, “Ghosted” follows hopelessly romantic Cole (Evans), who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Sadie (de Armas). When Sadie seemingly ghosts him, Cole follows her to London as a romantic gesture, only to discover that the girl of his dreams is a CIA agent on assignment.

The high-tech, high concept thriller Assassin is out now on DVD and digital platforms in the UK and Ireland.
A-list superstar Bruce Willis (the Die Hard legend in one of his final roles before retirement) teams up with Nomzamo Mbatha (Coming 2 America) for a futuristic tale of hired killers, lethal drones, and wriggly worm-bots injected into people’s heads!
The feature debut of writer/director Jesse Atlas (Sundance nominee for the sci-fi short Record/Play), the film also stars Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell, superb as the villainous ‘fixer’ Adrian, Mustafa Shakir and Andy Allo (Pitch Perfect 3).
With superbly staged action-sequences, and a twist-packed plot, Assassin is an exciting and innovative debut that fans of bold sci-fi thrillers like Possessor and Inception will love.

Assassin is a sci-fi thriller directed by Jesse Atlas starring Bruce Willis and Dominic Purcell.
Assassin leads us, admittedly poignantly, to the terrible conclusion that a science fiction film can be anything but pedestrian.
And this one has that terrible flaw – that it contains no new ideas other than in its initial premise.
The rest, scenes strung together are more or less well done.
Assassin Film Review
It starts out from a good idea that, carried forward with absolutely no originality, limits itself to ticking off the passing minutes and burning itself up upon the assumptions of a thriller that, scene by scene, is not bad, but lacks substance when viewed as a whole.
A film that does not want to, does not know how to – or just simply fails to – stand out and make an impact, a film shot with the lightness of a professional who performs a routine,...

It has been rather bewildering to witness no less than two dozen low-budget action movies involving Bruce Willis being churned out over the last three years. That legacy-dimming run ends with “Assassin,” which arrives almost exactly one annum after his family announced a retirement due to diagnosis of cognitive disorder aphasia. Like nearly every preceding opus featuring the erstwhile global superstar in roles of prominent billing but little screentime, this rote genre exercise is little more than a time-killer, and as such a regrettable close to a significant career. Saban Films is releasing it to U.S. theaters, digital and VOD platforms on March 31.

It’s finally here, unless there’s something stashed away and kept secret, Assassin is the last film featuring Bruce Willis. Given the quality or lack thereof, of most of his later career output it seemed almost pointless to hope that he would go out on a high note, working with Jesse V. Johnson on White Elephant was probably his last chance of that. But could we at least hope that his last on-screen appearance wouldn’t be another embarrassment?
Alexa is angry and wants answers. Her husband Sebastian was a drone pilot until a work-related accident put him in a coma. She demands answers from his boss Valmora, the head of a private military operation.

The trailer for Apple TV's new film "Ghosted" is here, and it looks like another case of a big, splashy, blockbuster-type movie headed straight to the small screen. "Ghosted" stars former Marvel superstar Chris Evans and arguably even-bigger-right-now breakout star Ana de Armas, reuniting post-"Knives Out" for an action-packed rom-com. The movie comes from "Rocketman" director Dexter Fletcher, with a screenplay co-written by the screenwriting teams behind the "Deadpool" movies and recent "Spider-Man" trilogy.
That's a whole lot of star power, and the first trailer for "Ghosted" matches it with just as much firepower, as it features de Armas in gun-toting, badass CIA agent mode while Evans delivers some in-over-his-head everyman schtick. Before it unveils the spy-centric plot of the movie, which is a bit of a Trojan horse here, "Ghosted" offers up a meet-cute between Cole (Evans) and Sadie (de Armas), whom Cole thinks "might be the one.

Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for the upcoming rom-com turned thriller “Ghosted,” which stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas.
The trailer shows Evans’ character Cole certain that Sadie (de Armas) is not just “ghosting” him, or ignoring his texts, after one date. Convinced they are meant to be together, he travels to London in what he hopes to be a romantic gesture, only to discover Sadie is not the person he thought, and is actually part of the CIA. What ensues is a spy-thriller where “action speaks louder than words.”
De Armas joins the film after her recent Oscar nomination for “Blonde.” Her credits also include “Deep Water,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “No Time to Die.” Evans has played Captain America in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as performed in “Before We Go,” “Gifted” and “Playing It Cool.” Evans and de Armas previously acted together in “Knives Out” and “The Gray Man.

"It's time to come home." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for an action movie called Assassin - winner of the most generic and uninteresting titles for any movie in the last few years. Just call it anything else than this!! Bruce Willis stars as the man who creates futuristic microchip tech that enables the mind of an agent to inhabit the body of another person to carry out covert missions. When a man dies during this experimental military program, a former black-ops soldier, who also happens to be his wife, takes his place using the tech to find out who killed him. Yet another of these Willis movies where it doesn't seem like he knows the movie he's in. The cast includes Andy Allo, Nomzamo Mbatha, with Dominic Purcell and Mustafa Shakir. This looks so bad, not only a ripoff story but the filmmaking quality is just awful.

Shin’ichirô Watanabe, a key member of the original Cowboy Bebop‘s creative team, has weighed in on Netflix’s recent live-action take — and it’s safe to say he wasn’t a fan.
“For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue,” said Watanabe, who wrote and directed several episodes of the late-’90s anime series, in a recent Forbes interview. “I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene. It’s safe to say Shinichirō Watanabe wasn’t sorry when Netflix canceled its live-action Cowboy Bebop series in December 2021 after less than three weeks of streaming. Watanabe, director of the original 1998 anime series, said the updated version was “clearly not Cowboy Bebop.” “For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check,” Watanabe told Forbes in a new interview. “It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue. I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene. It was clearly not Cowboy Bebop and I realized at that point that if I wasn’t involved, it would not be Cowboy Bebop. I felt that maybe I should have done this. It's been over a year since Netflix's live-action adaptation of "Cowboy Bebop" began then ended, but it was clear the project was a misfire long before now. The series was canceled three weeks after premiere, lightning speed even by Netflix standards. It turns out that one of those disappointed was the anime's primary creator, animation director Shinichirō Watanabe (he and his team are collectively credited as the creator "Hajime Yatate").
Before Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" premiered, Watanabe revealed he'd been asked for his input: "I read the initial concept and provided my opinions, but I'm not sure if they will be reflected in the final product." He added that his suggestions being ignored would "leave a bad taste in [his] mouth," but to avoid making the crew's jobs tougher, he would simply hope it "turn[ed] out good." His hopes weren't met.

Mustafa Shakir has always had a “hang up” about slave movies, so when his agent sent him the script for Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation” saying the casting director wanted him to read for Gordon, one of the slaves, it wasn’t a surprise that “the role didn’t resonate.”
But Shakir, best-known for his TV work, was surprised by the casting director’s response, which was to ask what role he’d like to play. “I said, ‘Other than Peter?’” he deadpans, referring to Will Smith’s lead role that dominates the film. “There’s this guy Andre Cailloux.”
Cailloux, who is probably worthy of his own film, was born a slave but earned his freedom in 1846, learned to read, found success as a boxer and became a respected New Orleans businessman and community leader. In “Emancipation,” Cailloux is a military captain, one of the first Blacks to lead a unit.

An unrecognizable Will Smith stars as an enslaved man in Civil War era Louisiana, who decides upon hearing about Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to escape from a labor camp through the bayou in an attempt to reach Union forces in Baton Rouge, in Antoine Fuqua’s Emancipation. Will Smith’s character was inspired by a real person, the man with the heavily scarred back in the famous Civil War photo, who really did escape slavery to reach an Union encampment. The photo, known as “Whipped Peter” or “the Scourged Back,” was widely circulated during the Civil War and was instrumental in convincing Northerners of the truth of the brutality of slavery.

We are eight months out from this year’s Academy Awards, where Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after a derogatory joke aimed at his wife Jada Pinkett. He was subsequently barred from attending the ceremony for the next decade. And, now, the actor’s career lies in jeopardy. Several of his projects have stalled. Others, reportedly, have been outright cancelled. His historical action film Emancipation, which had finished production just a few weeks before that fateful Oscar night, cost Apple an estimated 120m, and though the studio has pressed ahead with its scheduled release plan, the debate is still rife over whether they’ve made the right call. Smith himself gets it. “I completely understand,” he told a US journalist in an interview this week. “If someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready.” I also respect people’s...

Apple Original Films has revealed the trailer for the highly anticipated film ‘Emancipation.’
Directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua and starring and produced by Will Smith.
The film tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.
The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.
Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Bivens, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten and Imani Pullum also star.

The first trailer for Antoine Fuqua and Apple TV+'s unsettling slavery drama "Emancipation" is finally here. Based on the true story of a widely-photographed slave nicknamed "Whipped Peter," Will Smith takes center stage as an escaped slave that becomes a crucial part of the abolitionist movement. Be warned that the new trailer does have some graphic imagery, so we would like to extend caution before watching it. However, the sweeping cinematography, epic fights, and powerful performances seen throughout tease a film that could secure Smith his fourth Oscars nomination and perhaps his second win.
The topic of slavery on film is a difficult and nuanced one, and it's important to understand all perspectives on it. After all, it's no secret that the history of Black pain on screen is one filled with exploitation. However, in a new interview with Variety Fair, Fuqua argued that the story of Peter, as...

A lucky group of A-listers and influencers got an early look at “Emancipation,” the Will Smith-starring historical survival picture directed by Antoine Fuqua that may still be in the running for awards action this season.
In early November, Smith, Fuqua, and Apple Original Films held a screening in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual conference. A discussion followed, moderated by Mary Elliott, curator of American Slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the audience had numerous policy-makers and representatives from important Black institutions.
On Monday, Smith ditched the formal attire for a cozier affair at a small screening room, but with an impressive group of friends. Rihanna, Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle, Aap Rocky, Kenya Barris, fashion designer Fawn, Blacksmith Records co-founder Corey Smyth, and others were in attendance.

The cast for Antoine Fuqua‘s The Equalizer 3 is growing stronger with addition. According to Deadline, That Dirty Black Bag and Promises star Gaia Scodellaro is joining Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning for the upcoming sequel. The project is from Sony Pictures and has a script by Richard Wenk. Todd Black of Escape Artists, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch produce alongside Washington and Fuqua.
Everyone is keeping the plot of The Equalizer 3 under wraps, though we know it will feature the return of Washington’s Robert McCall. The original film, released in 2014, focuses on a man who believes he’s put the past behind him but can’t stand by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters. A sequel was released in 2018, featuring McCall going on a rampage to serve unflinching justice for someone he loves.

Emancipation trailer: Will Smith leads a stirring look at Antoine Fuqua’s historical escape thriller
Apple Original Films is bringing major updates for Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming historical drama this Monday with an Emancipation trailer and word of the film’s theatrical release. The emotional epic starring Will Smith is opening in theaters on December 2, followed by a December 9 release on Apple TV+.
Industry insiders are watching Emancipation closely after an incident involving Smith at the last Academy Awards. Smith slapped Chris Rock‘s face on live television after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s partner, Jada-Pinkett Smith. “The slap heard around the world” damaged Smith’s reputation and banned him from the Academy for ten years. Smith also resigned from the Academy to minimize the damage done. Despite the steps taken, Smith’s fall from grace hurt Emancipation‘s status as an Oscar contender. It isn’t easy to champion a film whose star cannot participate in the annual celebration.

Will Smith is back in business sooner than expected with the action thriller “Emancipation,” as Apple Original Films has set the film for a Dec. 2 theatrical release, followed by a Dec. 9 release on Apple TV+.
Though “Emancipation” had originally been set for a 2022 release date, Apple delayed the film to 2023. Now that delay has been reversed, making this film a potential Oscar contender.
The teaser shows Smith as Peter, a slave who escapes from a Lousiana plantation after being whipped nearly to death. The film follows Peter on his journey to freedom, as he outwits his hunters and makes his way north, where he joins the Union Army. The film is based on the true story of “Whipped Peter,” after photos of his bare back, which was mutilated by a whipping, were published in 1863, revealing the brutality of slavery.

Best-known for her action roles in “Skyscraper,” with Dwayne Johnson, and Simon West’s “Skyfire,” Asian star Hannah Quinlivan has joined director Jesse Atlas’s sci-fi feature “Soul Assassin.”
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Bruce Willis, Andy Allo, Nomzamo Mbatha, Dominic Purcell and Mustafa Shakir.
Atlas’ feature debut, “Soul Assassin” is described as a female-led, mind-bending sci-fi thriller. In it, a female former black ops soldier joins an experimental drone warfare program to hunt down her husband’s killer. When the technology is stolen, however, the hunter becomes the hunted.
“This is a groundbreaking genre film bound to be an audience favorite and an international dream cast of both veterans and rising stars adds even more appeal,” said Atlas, who wrote “Soul Assassin” along with Aaron Wolfe, based on their short film “Let Them Die Like Lovers.”

Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to Double Play, the latest feature from award-winning filmmaker Ernest Dickerson. The digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group/Entertainment Studios will release the film, based on Curaçaoan author Frank Martinus Arion’s internationally acclaimed Dutch-language novel Dubbelspel, on digital and VOD platforms on February 22.
Double Play is a drama set against the beauty and bittersweet complexity of Curacao, where poverty and wealth are two sides of the same coin. It follows Ostrik (Dani Dare), who is now a grown man working as a doctor in the Netherlands, as he returns to his childhood home to confront ghosts of his past revealed to him in a mysterious letter. Through his memories, we witness the sometimes-dangerous moves that adults made for the sake of survival in a time of turmoil and colonial unrest during the 1970s.
