The Red Suitcase (La Valise Rouge) by Iranian Director Cyrus Neshvad is a crucial addition to this year’s Oscar nominated live action shorts. A clear allegory of the relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the country’s female populace, Neshvad’s film dials back the scale to bring us face to face with such injustice on an individual level, as seen through the eyes of an incredibly strong young woman fighting with her all for her freedom. His largely dialogue-free film ratchets up the tension from its opening scene as our teenage protagonist uncertainly navigates an encounter with customs agents through the fog of a language barrier. The situation only deteriorates from there as we slowly become aware of exactly why she is in this airport all on her own, unable to speak to anyone or ask for the help she clearly needs. Through carefully placed visual markers and detailed production design,...

For Iranian director and co-writer Cyrus Neshvad, bringing the story of The Red Suitcase to life was a matter of urgency. The film follows the harrowing journey of a 16-year-old Iranian girl as she attempts to flee an airport undetected by the man that she’s been sent off to marry. One of the short’s most instrumental scenes involves the girl removing her hijab for her safety, but also at the detriment of defying her culture. Considering the timely release of his short film coinciding with the recent female-led anti-hijab protests in Iran, Neshvad explains, “I don’t want the movie to be political. I just wanted to give this message that we should be free to do what we want… when I did this movie, I said, ‘I want a woman who has the choice to take this off, even if it’s for her freedom, for her free will.

From social justice to adolescent romance, this year’s Oscar-nominated shorts filmmakers don’t take long to make their points. The 2023 field of nominees include films from virtually every corner of the world, including Ireland, Iran, India, Norway, Italy and, of course, the U.S.
From left, An Irish Goodbye, Ivalu, Le Pupille, Night Ride and The Red Suitcase.
Live Action Shorts
An Irish Goodbye, written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, is a dark comedy that follows a pair of estranged brothers who must learn to get along after their mother’s untimely death. Berkeley’s own views of loss inspired the film’s exploration of love and grief. “It’s about reconnection, redemption and the idea of how, in the darkest moments for those two characters, they end up finding each other through their commitment to their mom and their mom’s memory,” he says. “Grief...

Of the 10 films up for best picture, no fewer than six run 199 minutes or more. On one extreme, James Cameron’s punishing “Avatar” sequel is long enough to require bathroom breaks. At the other, Daniels’ Adhd-styled “Everything Everywhere All at Once” proves equally exhausting, dedicating every hyperkinetic second to stimulating easily distracted audiences. It’s enough to make folks grateful for the lower-profile but still engaging live-action shorts category, where nominees are bound by a strict 40-minute time limit. This year’s crop — the so-so “2023 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Live Action” program — clocks in at under two hours. Available in theaters and on myriad streaming platforms, the international assembly may be a hit-and-miss affair, but never outstays its welcome.

An Irish Goodbye
Inspiration for the black comedy came from co-director Tom Berkeley at soccer match where two brothers were “at each other’s throats,” although where one was caring for the other who had Down syndrome. In “An Irish Goodbye,” estranged brothers Lorcan and Turlough are brought back together following their mother’s death, and Turlough must take care of his younger brother, who has Down syndrome. Lorcan will not leave their farm until they complete all 100 items on their mother’s bucket list. Co-director Ross White tapped into his observations from working in a special education school. “There can be this lack of cynicism with people with Down syndrome, a sort of openness and an honesty and purity about the way they see the world,” he says. The film depicts the brothers’ respective responses to death: “You’ve got this one character who is coping with this in a very emotionally open way,...

The title that saw Riz Ahmed stifle laughter, the press room crack up and Allison Williams murmur “no comment” at Oscar nominations last month hits theaters today as ShortsTV presents Oscar Nominated Short Films at circa 380 locations in 75 markets.
The program, three feature-length presentations of the five nominees for Live Action, Animated and Documentary short films, will expand to 500-600 screens by Academy Awards week. Exhibitors can play any or all of the trio. Some are splitting the doc shorts, at 160 minutes, in two. “We leave that up to theaters,” said ShortsTV founder-ceo Carter Pilcher. My Year Of Dicks is an animation entry.
ShortsTV has been releasing these theatrically for 18 years and they do pretty well, hitting 3.5 million in box office pre-Covid. That fell to 1.8 million in 2021 but Pilcher is hoping for a rebound, calling this year’s crop “absolutely some of the best and most audience-friendly films we’ve...

“By getting nominated we can be more visible and put the light on what’s going on in Iran and the women being killed right now,” says director Cyrus Neshvad. His film “The Red Suitcase” has been nominated for Best Live Action Short at the 95th Academy Awards. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The movie takes place at the Luxembourg airport, where a veiled 16-year old Iranian girl (Nawelle Ewad) is frightened to take her red suitcase from the baggage claim conveyor belt. She keeps pushing back the moment to go through the arrival gate and seems more and more terrified with each passing minute.

Nawelle Ewad in The Red Suitcase
A country of little more than half a million people, Luxembourg is not known for its Oscar-winning films, but The Red Suitcase could change this. One of the strongest entries on this year’s Best Live Action Short shortlist, it’s the story of a 16-year-old Iranian girl who finds herself all alone in Luxembourg Airport, her whole future in jeopardy. Desperate to escape without being seen by the man who is waiting for her, she has to use all her ingenuity.
Director Cyrus Neshvad, producer Guillaume Levil and actor Nawelle Ewad, who plays the girl, Arianne, attended a press conference to talk about the film, and about what it was like to hear the news from the Academy.
“I guess, like everybody, I was surprised and proud,” says Cyrus. “But more proud that the visibility of the film [means] I can reach now, what's going on in Iran,...
