Situated 60 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia, Lake Lanier is one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. Named after a Georgia-based poet, Lake Lanier draws a number of tourists every year. Despite being a popular recreational spot for tourists, this lake is considered haunted by many locals. Underneath the clear, aqua-blue water lies a history that has led many to believe that this lake is not safe.

Jean-Paul Vignon, the romantic French vocalist and actor who impressed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic during an eight-decade career, died March 22 of liver cancer in Beverly Hills, his family announced. He was 89.
Performing a repertoire of contemporary pop and American standards, Vignon debuted in the U.S. in 1963 at the famed New York supper club The Blue Angel, where he opened for stand-up comic Woody Allen.
Ed Sullivan would soon showcase him on his Sunday night CBS variety show in eight appearances — including one in which he sang a duet with young Liza Minnelli — and he became a regular guest on Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin’s programs.
Signed to Columbia Records, Vignon released his first U.S. album, Because I Love You, in 1964. Three years later, he had a supporting role opposite William Holden and Cliff Robertson in the World War II film The Devil’s Brigade.

The best joke in “History of the World, Part I” is the tablets. Moses descending from the mountaintop, bearing 15 commandments, only to drop one of the three in his armful, is as simple and elegant as you can get. It’s in Mel Brooks’ delivery, but it’s also in the way that punchline plays in any area. Any era, from vaudeville to Vine, gets an equal shot at that laugh.
Arguably, the second best joke in “History of the World, Part I” is the quick epilogue that smushes together slices of ideas as a test case for what a potential sequel might have looked like. The stuff wedged into the end of that 1981 movie is weirder, more abstract, and, yes, shorter. For decades, the fact that “Part 2” never came only made it funnier in its own way.

Mel Brooks came up with the title to his 1981 comedy feature “History of the World, Part I” as a joke. There were never any plans to make a Part II.
Until now.
As the streaming revolution took hold, Brooks, his producing partner Kevin Salter and rightsholder Searchlight Pictures decided to explore a long overdue sequel, but in series form. That’s when they contacted Nick Kroll, who’s known for his sketch comedy (in addition to the painfully funny take on adolescence “Big Mouth”), to kick around a “Part II” that was four decades not in the making.
“There was something slightly more exciting about hearing from Mel Brooks, with all due respect to the wonderful folks at Searchlight,” Kroll says.
Kroll brought in Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen to develop the 21st century take on the original. But they didn’t want to do a new “History...

As the American treasure himself says in the opening credits, Mel Brooks is a hero to some, and merely a legend to others. He broke ground in irreverent social commentary with Blazing Saddles, and rewired the knobs in the monster’s brain for Young Frankenstein. Brooks’ Hulu TV-sketch-series-masquerading-as-a-film-sequel throws more jokes at the viewer than almost any comedy in the History of The World, Part II. Not all of them land squarely, though the ricochets inflict sufficient comic collateral damage.
There is a lot we can learn from an anthology sketch series. All of which is graded on a curveball. Like History of the World, Part I, the series is made up of short gags, like Marco Polo’s (Jake Johnson) impromptu gift-exchange on his first trip to China, longer one-off sequences, and a few continuing stories. The eight-episode series is Brooks’ first creative project since composing the score to...

It took 42 years, but Mel Brooks is finally making good on a parody of a promise he never seemed likely to keep: Bringing “History of the World, Part II” to audiences far and wide. The filmmaker addresses that elephant in the room within the opening minutes of the new, eight-part Hulu series, admitting that he agreed to the project under two conditions — that there could be no repeat gags, and that he be made to look exactly like he did in the 1981 original film.
The show winks at both of those conditions by the end of the first episode, setting the tone for any unaware viewers that were expecting historical insight or veracity on world events.
In “Part II,” a now 96-year-old Brooks returns as writer and producer, but aside from the aforementioned intro, he doesn’t appear onscreen. Instead, he picks up narration duties from Orson Welles, a gig...

The ambitious series, which is inspired by Daniel Mannix’s eponymous nonfiction book, is set in the complex and corrupt world of ancient Rome’s spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition and features an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire.

You can’t argue with disc collectors eager to rediscover movies they loved at age 10, in terrific kiddie matinees. Cowboy star Rory Calhoun makes a perfectly fine Italian vagabond ladies’ man for this very un-serious ‘oriental’ adventure, and Yôko Tani is the requisite princess who needs kissing lessons. Tim Lucas’s welcome, info-packed commentary satisfies our curiosity about the long-unavailable title — it’s different than the A.I.P. release we (barely) remember.

Talk about calling your shot. Who else but comedy legend Mel Brooks would release a comedy in 1981 ironically titled "History of the World Part 1", complete with a fake trailer for the sequel, despite no initial plans of actually making a Part 2? Well, maybe some things aren't quite as set in stone as they may appear, after all. Decades after the fact, Brooks is still trucking along at the ripe young age of 96(!) and, what's more, he's finally spearheading a followup series to his beloved comedy classic that's set to debut on Hulu in the coming year.
Titled (what else?) "History of the World Part 2," the series will unfold as part of "a four night event" filled with all the humor, episodic skits, and mind-bogglingly stacked cast of A-list talent that you'd expect from a Mel Brooks production. The man isn't getting any younger, so why not pull out all the...

The Master of Comedy, Mel Brooks, is back to take another swipe at some of history’s most iconic figures and events with History of the World, Part II. Over 40 years since Brooks’ original film made a mockery of Moses, introduced the first caveman critic, and turned the Spanish Inquisition into a song-and-dance routine, the legendary comedian is ready for another trip through the ages. Times certainly have changed, but Brooks’s knack for making fun of humankind’s victories and losses remains as sharp as ever. Hulu debuted a History of the World Part 2 teaser trailer on Friday, featuring a massive cast of comedy greats in the making.
Here’s the official synopsis:

After 40 years, the hopes and dreams of a generation have finally come true: “History of the World Pt. 2” is almost here. Hulu announced on Thursday that TV series — the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1982 Mel Brooks movie — will premiere March 6. And along with that announcement comes the official trailer. Watch that above now.
The 8-episode series launches with the first two episodes on March 6, with two episodes released nightly through March 9.
Like “History of the World Part 1,” the show features a series of irreverent sketches inspired by different historical eras and, if it’s anything like the original film, also parodying the historical epics of Hollywood’s golden age. And like its predecessor, “History of the World Part 2” takes aims at numerous literal and figurative sacred cows.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is someone who firmly believes that when he eats, all his friends and family eat too. Canned Netflix original Sense8 is returning in 2018 for a two-hour finale, that much we know, but we now have an awesome behind the scenes promo to tease it, one which gathers all of the wonderful sensates that captured our imagination over the course of two seasons.

But because of Sense8‘s dedicated fanbase, one which quickly launched a petition in a last-ditch attempt to sway Netflix’s decision, it’s rather fitting that the online giant has committed to a two-hour special in 2018 to send off the sensates in style.

The series, co-created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch and executive produced by Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, stars Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron. Kate Nash, Jackie Tohn and Kia Stevens — the only actress with wrestling experience — also round out the 14-women ensemble featured on the first season, which released its 10 episodes on June 23.
The critically praised comedy has earned rave reviews and launched during a strong second quarter for Netflix. The streamer added 5.2 million subscribers during the three-month period that saw the return of stalwart series like House of Cards and Orange,...

When Netflix started taking its originals game seriously — a.k.a. when it started commissioning productions by itself — the surging streaming service quickly earned a prestigious reputation. On the backs of “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” the over-the-top platform became an immediate awards contender and critical darling.
But over the last 12 months, as Netflix releases more and more original content, there’s been a noticeable dip in the quality of its dramas; a dip that precedes a changing of the guard for the service when it comes to TV’s kingmaker: the Emmys.
The Good News
Let’s start with what’s working: At this time last year, “Stranger Things” was about to set the summer on fire with a surprisingly addictive and widely beloved first season. Matt and Ross Duffer’s homage to ’80s family fright films earned respectable reviews, but a cultural tidal wave...

Canned Netflix original Sense8 is returning in 2018 for a two-hour finale, that much we know, but we now have the announcement video for you to pour over, one which gathers all of the wonderful sensates that captured our imagination over the course of two seasons.
It’s by no means the first Netflix original to be put to the sword – The Get Down, Marco Polo, Bloodline, and Girlboss have all been yanked off the streaming service in recent weeks. But because of Sense8‘s impassioned community, one which quickly launched a petition in a last-ditch attempt to sway Netflix’s decision, it’s rather fitting that the online giant has committed to a two-hour special in 2018 to send off the sensates in style.
Hatched by renown filmmakers Lana and Lilly Wachowski – along with co-creator J. Michael Straczynski – Sense8 began life in 2015, when Netflix had already established a string of bankable...

2017-06-25T12:33:23-07:00Netflix Cancels 'Girlboss' After a Single Season
Netflix is canceling another show.
The streaming giant has opted to not move forward with another season of Girlboss, the Britt Robertson-led comedy loosely based on Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso's life. The 13-episode series — which followed a rebellious anarchist who turns herself into a business woman by up-selling vintage clothes online — was written and executive produced by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect) and hailed from Charlize Theron's production company, Denver & Delilah.
The decision to not order additional seasons of Girlboss, which debuted in April, comes weeks after the streamer canceled Sense8, its sci-fi drama from The Wachowskis, and The Get Down, its ambitious music drama from Baz Luhrmann. The cancellations mark rare ones for the streamer, which has renewed the vast majority of its slate as part of an aggressive push into scripted originals.

It doesn't look like we're getting Sense8 season 3 after all. Netflix has cancelled the show...
Even if the cluster scored a major victory at the end of season two, the characters of Sense8 won't get to enjoy it. Netflix just cancelled the streaming drama after two seasons.
Cindy Holland, Netflix's vice president of original content, said to The Hollywood Reporter that, “after 23 episodes, 16 cities, and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end."
She went on to thank the creators, cast, and fans for their love and support of the show.
"It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world.

Netflix is cutting ties with another young original program. After putting the axe to “The Get Down” last week, the streaming giant cancelled “Sense8” early Thursday afternoon.
The news comes just one day after Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings went on CNBC and said the service should be cancelling more shows.
“Our hit ratio is way too high right now,” Hastings said. “So, we’ve canceled very few shows […] I’m always pushing the content team: We have to take more risk; you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”

With its original series, Netflix has tended to have a high success rate. Even the shows it ultimately gave the axe, such as Marco Polo and Hemlock Grove, found a few admirers before their respective cancellations.
Netflix’s latest show, however, has yet to receive any praise from critics. Iron Fist, the fourth chapter in Marvel’s franchise of Defenders TV shows, has been panned more resoundingly than any Netflix show before it.
Marvel’s other superhero shows on Netflix -- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage -- have all received praise for their acting, atmosphere, and action, but Iron Fist began to attract negativity long before its premiere. The decision to cast Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones in the titular role rather than an Asian actor drew complaints of whitewashing, even though the original Iron Fist character is white.

Talk about Netflix and gaming.
Netflix has rolled out its first video game online as part of the “Netflix Original Games” series.
Netflix Infinite Runner features the main characters from Narcos, Marco Polo, Orange Is The New Black and Stranger Things.
The game turned back the clock with 8-bit graphics and a simple run and jump scenario with one of your favorite characters. Basically, you only have the “space bar” to press as you leap into the air over obstacles or to collect power ups.
Each character has its own running background, obstacles to jump over and power ups to collect. For example, by choosing Pablo Escobar, you will control him running in the jungle to collect cocaine bags while avoiding the Federali.
The game is amusing for all five minutes as you end up play all four characters. So don’t expect this to be the game of the...

Netflix has finally released an official, playable 8-bit video game for Stranger Things! You can play the game online for free! That's not all, though. They also have 8-bit games for three of their other series including Narcos, Marco Polo, and Orange is the New Black.
In the Stranger Things game, you play as Mike, and you try and outrun the monstrous Demogorgon, who spits balls of darkness at you. The only action you really have to do is jump over the obstacles. With Narcos, you play Pablo Escobar and escape from being captured in Columbia. You play Piper in the Orange in the New Black game and catch chickens while dodging cafeteria trays.
All the games are pretty much the same but with different settings and themes, and they’re pretty simple, but if you have some time to kill, then play it for a few minutes by clicking here!

2016-12-14T11:48:25-08:00'Marco Polo' Gets Rare Netflix Cancellation. Will Others Follow?
It's not often that a Netflix original series gets the rug pulled out from under it, but that's what happened to Marco Polo this week. The expensive period adventure became the first Netflix series to get the axe after only two seasons.
Marco Polo came to Netflix from Starz, where it was not performing well enough to justify its big production budget. We have no way of knowing how well the series performed at Netflix, since the streaming platform very closely guards its viewership data, but we have to assume the cancellation means that it wasn't a hit for Netflix, either.
Still, it's been the Netflix policy so far to hang on to all of its original programming for at least three seasons. Presumably some of its other originals are not exactly blockbuster hits,...

The Golden Globes love two things: new TV shows the Emmys haven’t honored yet, and lavish British period pieces. So it’s not a shock that Netflix’s The Crown scored three Golden Globe nominations on Monday morning, including for Best Drama Series and acting nods for stars Claire Foy and John Lithgow. The awards buzz surrounding The Crown have some calling it “the next Downton Abbey,” but here’s the thing: It’s actually much better than that.

This review is based on the entire first season.
Production values run high within Netflix’s new blockbuster series The Crown, with everything from opulent operating rooms to the sunny waves of Malta providing the backdrop to the show’s royal drama. Centering on the cancer-stricken fall of King George VI, and subsequent rise to power of Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown isn’t too far removed from other similarly themed period pieces.
But while Netflix’s series feels unsurprising – the opening hours especially have long, languid stretches – it also revels in the deep pockets of the company’s production department to fascinatingly gorgeous ends. With the added bonus of creator Peter Morgan’s understated writing, the ultimate result is a slow burn of a show that’s entirely worth checking out for anyone interested in this kind of detail-rich historical drama.

Update: The folks over at The Vulture reached out to one of their sources close to the production, and were met with the following response regarding this rumor:
“The spec script [mentioned in the original story below] was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film… Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.”
In short, the poster mentioned below was not inaccurate when they said the spec script they read had a white male, but Disney has supposedly since changed the script to include a full Chinese cast.

As if it wasn't an automatic assumption, Ash Ketchum is conveniently taking his adventure right into the premise for the new Pokemon game Pokemon Sun and Moon. Anime News Network says Ash is going to the island of Alola, learning to dance, and discovering new Pokemon and old Pokemon with new forms.
So is Ash the Marco Polo of the Pokemon world, or is he just that dumb? How is it this kid was allowed to set off on a journey at age 11 and be so ignorant of the world?! I get that it's a TV show, but can we get a canon explanation or something from the showrunners? Ash not knowing about Pokemon on an island is like me at the age of 26 seeing a Kangaroo and being like Holy S***!
Maybe he'll actually win a Pokemon League this season. I would expect this series to come to the U.

Progress is slow when it comes to the hiring of more diverse and female directors on TV. According to the Directors Guild of America’s analysis of scripted TV series shot during the 2015-2016 TV season, the number of women and ethnic minorities behind the camera barely budged from the year before.
The study reports that 17% of all TV episodes were directed by women last season – up a tick from 16% the previous year. Male and female ethnic minorities directed 19% of all episodes, vs. 18% during the 2014-2015 season.
Streaming video services (like Netflix and Amazon) may be the new kid in town, but the platform actually exhibited less diverse representation than the old guard broadcast and cable networks. Among episodes run by streaming services, just 8% were directed by ethnic minorities — compared to 19% among broadcast shows, 24% among basic cable series and 10% among premium cable shows.

As X-Men founder Charles Xavier, James McAvoy plays the world’s most powerful telepath, who has unfettered access to the whole gamut of human emotions. But his newest project will see him mostly unaware of all those troublesome feelings—initially, at least. According to Deadline, the X-Men: Apocalypse star is in talks to headline the sci-fi film Extinction, from Good Universe and Mandeville Films.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing Extinction, but the search for a director is ongoing. The project already has a whole slew of writers, including Marco Polo’s Brad Caleb Kane, hard at work ironing out the plot points. Right now, the story sounds like a pastiche comprising the plots of previous sci-fi films: McAvoy is playing a mechanic and father who “realizes that he is the first robot to feel human emotion,” which makes him sound like one of Blade Runner’s replicants. And then there were three.
After a summer of heartbreak, death, and betrayal, Camp Stillwater's desperate, dark, demonized version of The Hunger Games left three counselors standing.
Yet seemingly the two out of three were just filler characters for the summer.
Drew and Blair, after returning the children to safety, went back to Camp Stillwater after yielding a warning from Anton that their friends needed help.

Taylor Kitsch’s next small-screen role comes with a built-in following.

Despite its paltry reviews and failure to register with mainstream audiences, Flaked is getting another season on Netflix, the streaming service confirmed on social media.
Posting on Flaked‘s official Facebook page, Netflix wrote, “We’re headed back to Venice for #Flaked Season 2. Can we stay in your guest house?” A return date for the second season was listed simply as 2017.
The series, set in the insular California city of Venice, follows Chip (Arnett) as he struggles with the deterioration of his image and sobriety even while falling for the beautiful London (Ruth Kearney) despite the rift this creates between him and his best friend, Dennis (David Sullivan).
It’s been well-established that Netflix doesn’t exactly operate by typical cable-network laws. Its pricey historical epic Marco Polo was far from the Game of Thrones-style smash that the streaming service had clearly hoped it would be, yet it was...
