The Cannes Film Festival is many things: A prestigious platform for the best of world cinema, a massive industry event where film acquisitions get made, a testament to the French film industry’s classism and rampant sexual abuse. But more than anything, it’s one of the world’s greatest photo opps.
Sure, sure, everyone wants the Palme D’or. But even more people would kill to get seen on the iconic Cannes red carpet, and get your picture snapped by the hordes of press that camp on the Croisette. Some of the world’s most glamorous and beautiful celebrities can be seen on the steps outside the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès every year posing for the cameras, and while it’s not quite the fashion moment that the Met Gala is, it still offers a great opportunity for us pleebs to gawk at some particularly shiny stars in all of their finery.

International sales and distribution outfit Pink Parrot Media has closed several key deals for Doce Entertainment and Mr. Miyagi Films’ animated kids and family feature “Hanna and the Monsters.”
Agreements have been made with World Visions for Cis, Boxoo for South Korea, Front Row for the Middle East, Gpi for the Baltics, Cinetel for Hungary, Wediacorp for Turkey and Movie Company for Benelux.
Directed by Lorena Ares, “Hanna and the Monsters” unspools in a hidden world where monsters hide from humans that they fear. The monster’s world is thrown into upheaval when four-year-old Hanna finds a portal to Monsterville in her closet.
In Cannes this week, Pink Parrot will also launch world sales (outside of Spain) for the newly acquired second film in a planned trilogy for the franchise, “Hanna and the Forgotten Christmas.” Currently in production, the sequel will be ready for distribution in the first quarter of...

When John Krasinski stepped behind the camera for his 2018 smash hit horror feature “A Quiet Place,” he drew inspiration from an unlikely place: “This movie was for my kids,” he told IndieWire in April 2018. Well, not so much for them, but about them, and the lengths parents will go in order to protect their nearest and dearest. Krasinski and co-star and wife Emily Blunt’s kiddos were quite young at the time, and not at all the target audience for the nearly wordless alien invasion thriller. Perhaps then, when Krasinski set about writing his first post-“A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place Part II” film, the PG outing “If,” the filmmaker wanted to finally make something his kids could actually watch.
That’s a fine enough place to start, and a more tender reading of Krasinski’s fifth directorial feature, which takes an interesting enough idea — what if imaginary friends were real?...

There's still a lot of buzz surrounding Richard Gadd's Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer. The comedian and screenwriter translated the personal traumatic experience of a stalking victim into the format of a dramatic thriller with elements of comedy and true crime.
The phenomenal success of the series has been going on for a month now, and the real events are becoming overgrown with details and speculation.
If you are looking for something no less intense and at the same time based on real events, then these movies and TV series are for you.

Cannes Film Festival kicked off its 77th edition with opening night film The Second Act, an apt title for the French event that kicked off with clear skies and a festive mood after days of looming strikes, #MeToo rumours and a high tension geopolitical landscape.
General delegate Thierry Fremaux set the tone for the evening by walking casually to the Lumiere theatre with microphone in hand with a simple “good evening everyone - Quentin Dupieux” as the director and his starry cast including Lea Seydoux and Louis Garrel took their seats.

The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is notoriously strict about its black-tie dress code (one man in a blue tuxedo who committed the fashion travesty of wearing white socks was almost turned away). But on Tuesday night, France welcomed a national hero to the opening night of the 77th edition — Messi, the four-legged scene-stealer from last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall.”
The canine phenom helped brighten things up even as dark clouds gathered over the Palais des Festivals, site of Cannes’ biggest premieres. Despite the foreboding weather and light drizzle, Lily Gladstone, Greta Gerwig, Omar Sy, Jane Fonda, Juliette Binoche and other stars added some glamour and sparkle to the evening.

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is officially underway in the South of France as A-listers, auteurs and America’s most revered actress, Meryl Streep, converged at the Palais’ Grand Theatre Lumiere on Tuesday for a typically glamorous opening ceremony.
The anticipation was as thick as the clouds in the sky on Tuesday as rain was not the only threat hanging over the start of this year’s festival. From a possible strike and a fresh #MeToo discussion in France to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, festival officials have faced many questions in the days and hours leading up to Tuesday night. During his annual kick-off press conference, festival boss Thierry Fremaux sidestepped looming issues and tried to center the main attraction and the core mission of delivering world-class cinema. “We are trying to have a festival without these polemics,” he said, encouraging people (particularly the press) to...

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig, met the international press Tuesday — and it didn’t take long before the assembled stars were urged to address the various fraught political issues swirling around this year’s edition of the world’s most glamorous film fest.
On the eve of the 77th festival, Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux had set the tone by attempting to distance the event from hot-button topics, saying at his own press conference on Monday, “We are trying to have a festival without these polemics. In Cannes, the politics should be on the screen.”
The French festival head, who has served in his role since 2001, noted how coverage of Cannes has changed over his tenure, as the international media’s interest has shifted from the films on exhibition to an expectation that the festival be responsive to surrounding social issues. That was certainly the case Tuesday,...

With rumors of a bombshell #MeToo report about the French cinema industry knocking on the door of the Cannes Film Festival, this year’s jury president Greta Gerwig on Tuesday acknowledged the wave that’s out there in a way that festival boss Thierry Frémaux didn’t want to address at his press conference the day before.
“I think people in the community of movies telling their stories and changing things for the better is only good,” said the Barbie filmmaker at a press conference introducing the jury just hours before the festival’s opening night begins. “I’ve seen substantial changes in the American film community; I think it’s important to expand the conversation.”
“It’s only moving things in the correct direction, keeping those lines of communication open,” said Gerwig about a press member’s query as to whether the current #MeToo climate is France is impacting the festival.

Greta Gerwig addressed the growing #MeToo movement in France at the jury press conference on opening day of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

There are many horror films, thrillers, and disaster movies that try to capture the worst moments in the lives of fictional characters and touch the hearts of viewers through their suffering.
Some do it better than others, but to this day, no movie can compete with the horrors that surround us in real life.
Sometimes, though, cinematography meets the stories of real people, and that's when the real magic happens. The most realistic disaster movie, filmed in 2012, is now available for everyone to watch on Netflix. But it won't be for long.
Is The Impossible a Good Movie?
In 2004, the Indian Ocean was hit by a tsunami that wreaked havoc in several countries at once. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and many other countries were affected by the disaster, which took the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and went down in history as one of the world's deadliest disasters.

Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.
George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

We’re just two weeks away from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and this morning the august French institution revealed who will determine the winners of this year’s awards. A cross-section of international talent will join “Barbie” and “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who will lead the panel, in an effort to undoubtedly compare apples to oranges and try to make sense of a diverse slate of films from directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Baker, Ali Abbasi, and many others.
Lily Gladstone, who won several Best Actress awards last year (but not the Oscar!) for her revolutionary turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is the other American joining Gerwig. The actress, currently seen on FX/Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” is returning to Cannes one year after Martin Scorsese and Apple Original Films brought “Flower Moon” to the French Riviera festival for its out-of-competition debut.

J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

In a triumphant night for Spain, J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” swept the top prizes at Platino Xcaret, named after the venue of the annual Platino Awards this year, which took place at the Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Argentina cinema’s plight, exacerbated by far-right president Javier Milei’s closure of its film institute, Incaa, was also on many people’s minds.
Citing veteran Argentine filmmaker Adolfo Aristarain as one of his inspirations, Bayona said upon receiving his best director award: “Argentina, we are here standing by your side, you’re not alone.”

Spain’s film and TV industries are in their second wave as standout content providers for global streamers. Some of the country’s most intriguing titles will take the international stage this weekend at MipTV in Cannes.
Built on a foundation of hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and “Locked Up,” a new era of internationally renowned content creation in Spain kicked off in 2018 with Alex Pina’s blockbuster series “Money Heist,” picked up by Netflix.
Since then, Spain has enjoyed a place among the steadiest content suppliers for major players worldwide, taking advantage of its often character-driven dramas, high-quality creators and producers, and a language spoken by more than 600 million people around the globe.
Although the market is continuously evolving, local industry has adapted to different new business models, entering bigger and more ambitious productions, often via co-production. Spanish fiction’s global popularity continues to grow to accommodate audience appetites.

Jonathan Glazer’s landmark Holocaust film The Zone of Interest, as widely expected, has just scooped the International Feature Oscar. The British film is the 20th that the UK has submitted to the category, and the first to win the race.
Inspired loosely by Martin Amis’ 2014 novel of the same name and set outside the walls of Auschwitz during the Holocaust, the German-language Zone of Interest stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller (also a Best Actress nominee tonight for Anatomy of a Fall) as Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, as they strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden separated from the Nazi concentration and extermination camp by a only a short wall. What is happening on the other side is rarely hinted at.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

Spain’s cultural and historical heritage and its diverse natural landscapes, from Moorish castles and royal palaces to snowy peaks, vast deserts and rugged coastlines, have made the country a prime location for international films and series.
In the last decade, Spain’s national government and key regions – the Canary Islands and the Basque Country’s Bizkaia – have added tax rebates and credits which now rate as among the best in Europe.
The country’s varied lands have served as practically the entire world for Netflix’s “The Crown,” while its imposing Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalusia played a key role in J.A. Bayona’s acclaimed survival drama “Society of the Snow.”
Bayona used the Laguna de las Yeguas area in the Sierra Nevada as a key location in the film, which chronicles the 1972 Uruguayan airplane crash high in the snow-covered Andes that left survivors stranded on a glacier 4,000 meters...

No two people feels the exact same way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of this year’s Oscar movies. Here’s Eric Blume and Cláudio Alves on Society of the Snow...
Eric: Hi Cláudio, there are few finer, smarter people to discuss a film with than you. So I'm looking forward to diving into J.A. Bayona's Oscar-nominated Society of the Snow. To me, Bayona has delivered one of the best films ever in the "survival genre," a tiny slice of cinema that admittedly isn't for everyone. And perhaps I'm a sucker for these tales, as I also loved the best most recent example, Danny Boyle's 127 Hours, as well. Age: 30
Enzo Vogrincic
Hometown: Montevideo, Uruguay
What
Bringing to the screen the tragic true story of one of Latin America’s most famous disasters was no easy feat. Nevertheless, the Uruguayan rising star Enzo Vogrincic took on the pressures of grueling pain, fleeting signs of hope and thoughts of imminent death to honor the deceased and the survivors of that accident. In J.A. Bayona’s film Society of the Snow, Vogrincic stars as Numa Turcatti, a passenger on board an ill-fated flight in 1972. When the plane collides with a mountain in the Andes, the survivors find themselves stranded on a glacier for more than two months. Numa serves as both the story’s protagonist and narrator.
“This is a story that you know about from the time you’re born,” Vogrincic says, when asked what the role meant to him. “When I heard about casting for this film, I...
