Good crime dramas are supposed to be gripping—ones you cannot take your eyes off even for a minute. Several crime dramas are straightforward and do not take much time to set up the premise. Narcos, Bodyguard, Ozark, Mindhunter, Money Heist, Iron Reign, and Peaky Blinders are some of the original Netflix shows that explored various facets of the crime drama genre and presented great stories through them.
Crooks is a new addition to this genre on the streaming platform that talks about the workings of various criminal gangs around certain countries in Europe and how they are interconnected. Created by Marvin Krey, Crooks is a German Netflix original, released on April 4, 2024.
Crooks is eight episodes long, with each having a runtime of forty minutes to one hour. The show is all about a prized historical coin that was stolen from a museum in Berlin by the Al-Walid crime ring of the city.

WarnerMedia Germany has confirmed that Ricky Gervais is among the cast of its comedy series Greenlight – German Genius, which is now shooting in Berlin.
The eight-part TV satire stars Kida Khodr Ramadan (4 Blocks) as himself. It recounts a dramatized version of events after Ramadan’s real-life Twitter exchange with Gervais in 2018, in which the British comedian praised Ramadan’s performance in 4 Blocks.
In Greenlight, Ramadan convinces Gervais to give him the rights for a German adaptation of Extras. However, as he attempts to progress the show to production, he comes up against the fact that the Germans aren’t particularly known for their humor, and that there are not many international stars in the country.
Also in the cast are a host of known German actors, musicians, and comedians, including: Detlev Buck, Frederick Lau, Tom Schilling, Veysel Gelin, Olli Schulz, Heike Makatsch, Maria Furtwängler, Sascha Geršak, Katrin Bauerfeind, Britta Hammelstein,...

Netflix is set to produce a new thriller called Freud, which will center around a young Sigmund Freud as he is hunting down a serial killer in the 19th century alongside a medium named Fleur Salomé and a surly war veteran and police inspector named Kiss.
This certainly sounds like it could make for an interesting series! I love the concept and it's sure to deliver and dark and disturbing story.
This is a German-language murder thriller that will be developed in Austria. Netflix has found success with their other German series Dark, so they are looking to dive into another German project.
Freud actually studied in Vienna and is considered the founder of psychoanalysis, but this whole thing of hunting down a serial killer is a fictionalized account.
The eight-part series will be directed by Marvin Kren who previously worked on the TNT Series hit original drama 4 Blocks.

It’s at this time he meets the war veteran and policeman Alfred Kiss and notorious medium Fleur Salomé and unwittingly becomes part of the hunt for a serial killer.
The thriller will blend its period setting with a contemporary style, and is billed as a modern, sexy and suspenseful take on the life of the celebrated doctor.

Directed by: Marvin Kren
Cast: Gerhard Liebman (Janek), Edita Malovcic (Tanja), Brigitte Kren (Ministerin Bodicek), Hille Beseler (Birte), Peter Knaack (Falk), Santos (Tinnie), Felix Romer (Harald), Wolfgang Pampel (Bert Kakauer)
I don’t want to lead anyone astray on what this film is about. Just from reading the plot before I watched it, I gathered that it could be labeled as eco horror, which for the most part, I guess it is. Here we go though, putting labels on stuff, when all the old classic throwback horror from the 1950’s of mutated whatevers caused by radiation or some other ecological sin man created was just a scary movie. That’s how I prefer to look at it.
This is an Austrian film, and it takes place at a remote mountain research station in the Swiss Alps. There’s...

Just like that, Halloween is upon us. This year, you'll have an entire weekend to get into the ghoulish spirit of things. And among the festivities you have planned, you might want to add "ABCs Of Death 2" to your movie marathon of scare flicks, because the omnibus film, featuring 26 horror shorts, will likely have more than a few segments that will send a chill down your spine. And today, we have an exclusive preview of one of the highlights. "R For Roulette" comes from "Blood Glacier" director Marvin Kren, and it stands out in a few ways. Firstly, it's a period piece, and secondly it's in black-and-white. But perhaps most enticing is the premise, which sees a group of Germans in a basement playing Russian roulette, but as for the exact reason why? Well, we'll let you discover that for yourself, because the twist is pretty great, but in the scene below,...

Every day until Halloween, The Hollywood Reporter will be speaking to a notable horror director. Previously in this series: 'ABCs of Death 2's Alejandro Brugués "I was home alone at seven years old and saw Night of the Living Dead, and that f---ed my little child brain," says Marvin Kren, who decades later made his feature debut with a zombie thriller of his own — the well-regarded Rammbock in 2010. "I was seriously addicted to zombies," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. But there's one zombie project he can't stand: "I think The Walking Dead sucks," says the

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

In ABCs of Death 2, 26 directors contributed a short film, each taking one letter from the alphabet as their inspiration. Nigerian director Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen brings us a supernatural tale that has historical roots in L is for Legacy, and he shared his thoughts on the subject matter and the practical makeup effects used to bring his beast to life:
“It was a true event in history and that legacy kept on. Someone was wrongly accused and the beast came out as the manifestation of the curse that was placed on the people. I chose this story because I like the idea of the supernatural having control over the physical. Somebody that was innocent was wrongly accused and whatever he pronounced became real. I’m a strong believer of the spiritual and that story resonated with me. If you are true and decent, the physical will work for you, no matter how misunderstood you are.

Anthology movies are very tricky to pull off. Naturally, some segments, especially if each segment is done by different filmmakers, are going to be better than others. The ABCs of Death, when I first heard about it, sounded like an interesting concept. You get twenty-six directors from around the world, give them each a letter of the alphabet and some money, and let them make a short film segment (that involved death). The big problem with this conceit is you know going in a death is coming within all twenty-six shorts. Therefore, the suspense of the segment is diminished, and the directors, instead, have to come up with an interesting or stylistic way of killing someone. Movies that are heavy in style and lacking in story conflict don't really do much for me. Consequently, I liked about four of the segments in that first film. I remember "Q is for Quack" being my favorite,...

With Fantastic Fest 2014 drawing closer by the day, the horror lover inside me is ready to burst out in a fit of obsessive jubilation knowing the onslaught of movies I’ll be experiencing. Movies like Tusk, V/H/S Viral, The Babadook, and so many others are ready to push my moral boundaries and chill me to the bone, but one project has me uniquely excited, and that’s The ABCs Of Death 2.

I really enjoyed the first ABCs of Death horror anthology film, and the sequel looks like it will be at least as equally insane. 26 short films directed by 26 talented directors make up the ABCs of Death 2 and those films are disgustingly brutal, disturbing, and very funny. Each film corresponds with a letter from the alphabet, and the directors had complete freedom to do what they wanted with the letter assigned. The ABC’s Of Death was an ambitious horror anthology from 2012 consisting of 26 shorts from 26 different directors all of whom accepted the challenge of taking a single letter of the alphabet, picking a word that begins with that letter and then making a short film about death with that word at the core.
We have had anthologies with segments from different directorial hands before (the VHS films are a good example) but with 27 (the letter ‘O’ had two directors) you’d have expected the result to be unwieldy and inconsistent. And it was, yet the crazy concept mostly worked. I only recall a couple of duds, and since these films only lasted 3 or 4 minutes each, taking the bad with the good was painless. It will be interesting to see what they do with the sequel. It appears the format is identical with films from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between.

I don't know what to say, but this red band trailer for ABCs of Death 2 is doing nothing for me, it just looks cheap and uninspired, but perhaps I'm just in a bad mood because I think that's sort of the film's intention. The trailer is certainly gory and beyond what we most often get from a red band trailer, which is probably why it was labeled "extreme" in the email I received, but I guess I just don't see the humor in it, at least not as it's presented here in this trailer. The film brings together 26 directors for 26 different segments, all representing a letter of the alphabet and each director was given free reign as long as their segment was inspired by a word beginning with their respective letter and a story involving death. Said directors are Alejandro Brugues, Bill Plympton, Chris Nash, Dennison Ramalho, Erik Matti,...

"His caution is soon proven to be warranted, as the group begins to fall prey to the hybrids created by the liquid. A new group soon appears to investigate the new discovery,...

We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

There are many ways to die—peaceful, painful, and otherwise—and when it was given a wide release in 2013, Magnet Releasing’s The ABCs of Death showed us 26 of them. Now the sequel, ABCs of Death 2, is going to display 26 more paths to perishing, each one starting with a different letter of the alphabet. The film’s official poster has been revealed that fittingly features an angel of death.
Those looking to watch a new horror anthology film this Halloween season are in luck, as ABCs of Death 2 will come out on VOD platforms on October 2nd before hitting select theaters on October 31st. ABCs of Death 2 will make its world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest this September.
“ABC’s Of Death 2 is the follow-up to the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of what might just be the world’s best film festival. (I say “might” not because I doubt my own statement, but only because I have yet to attend Spain’s Sitges Film Festival…) And while Tim League and his Alamo Drafthouse friends most assuredly have plenty of surprises and celebrations in store for us this year for now we have to settle for a tease of what’s to come next month with this first wave announcement of movies and events playing the fest. Two anthology sequels are making their expected appearances here as are a few films we’ve seen elsewhere including the wonderfully creepy Australian chiller The Babadook, the surprising documentary Kung Fu Elliot and the French gender bender Jacky in the Kingdom of Women. Kevin Smith’s Tusk is also playing, but the highlight there promises to be seeing how the antagonism between Smith and movie bloggers...
