Independent film Common Ground seeks to explain how climate change can be combated directly through the current farm system.
Narrated by stars like Jason Momoa, Laura Dern, Rosario Dawson, Donald Glover, Ian Somerhalder, and Woody Harrelson, Common Ground is a letter to the world’s children that explains how soil may be the answer to a healthier planet.
Directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell, Common Ground continues the conversation that Kiss the Ground started. The film points out that the average person believes that “someone” or “something” will pull the world off the cliff of irrevocable change or that the solution is too complex or expensive to consider.
“There’s always the mentality that somebody else is coming or something else is coming that will solve the big problems,” Josh Tickell told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “This problem is a distributed problem, and it’s going to take a distributed solution.

Donald Glover, Jason Momoa, Laura Dern, Woody Harrelson, Ian Somerhalder and Rosario Dawson pen letters to a future generation about climate concerns in the above clip from the documentary Common Ground, which The Hollywood Reporter is debuting exclusively.
The film, written, directed and produced by Kiss the Ground helmers Josh and Rebecca Tickell and premiering at the Tribeca Festival on Thursday, explores the connections between farming, politics and illness as well as the Regenerative Agriculture movement. Glover, Momoa, Dern, Harrelson, Dawson and Somerhalder narrate. In addition to warning the next generation, the famous narrators provide hope for ways to fix broken systems.
“As parents of two young children, Common Ground is not only a love letter to kids, but all of the co-narrators of the film are also writing the letter to their children,” Rebecca Tickell tells THR. “The film, and the letter it depicts, are a commitment that we...

"Are you here to redeem yourself or make money for somebody else?" Shout Factory + Big Picture Ranch have revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled On Sacred Ground, a narrative "fictional" feature made by acclaimed environmentalist doc filmmakers Josh Tickell & Rebecca Tickell. Based on true events during the 2016 construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline that runs right through the Standing Rock Reservation, the environmental drama opens in limited theaters and on VOD in January. A journalist and oil company executive find themselves on opposite sides of the fight during the building of the contentious Dakota Access Pipeline that runs through a Native Reservation in North Dakota. This is a different kind of propaganda film, about how doing the right thing to defend people and their land can really upset corporate overlords. "We are in a 'do or die' situation... What are we going to do?" Greenwich Ent. has released an official trailer for The Revolution Generation, a documentary film from activist filmmakers Joshua Tickell & Rebecca Harrell Tickell. This premiered at a few festivals last year and is arriving to watch on digital this spring. "A fascinating mosaic of the change-makers that belong to this questioned generation." It's an exploration of the world-changing activism and potential of the largest youth generation in history - fighting for change in the last few years. The film shows examples of young leaders working to revolutionize systems that have failed their generation. It paints a powerful & hopeful picture of how today’s youth can solve global political and environmental crises. This sounds like an inspiring, rousing look at what's happening with activism, I just hope it shows how much resistance they're encountering. It's harder than ever...

There’s a good message at the heart of Joshua Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell’s climate crisis documentary, “Kiss the Ground,” though that add paper-thin razzle dazzle to the proceedings. The documentary does offer a “simple solution” to the climate crisis, with a comprehensive, common-sense plan that centers on reinvigorating our depleted soil. But the Tickells’ apparent belief that fact-based information is more thrilling when it’s delivered by stars that offer no bonafides beyond “hey, I like vegetables too” threatens to keep the film from ever hitting hard enough to truly inspire its viewers.
That’s not to say that a little pomp isn’t welcome, including narrator Woody Harrelson, who manages to straddle the line between “oh, a famous person!” and “well, here’s somebody who knows what they’re doing” in a way that other talking heads, including Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady, and Jason Mraz, can never quite manage.

By the time Joshua Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell’s documentary about billionaire businessman/philanthropist John Paul DeJoria is over, you’ll want to know DeJoria. You’ll want to work for DeJoria. Hell, you’ll want to be adopted by DeJoria. The laudatory tone of this well-meaning, inspirational effort is so extreme that even Frank Capra might have dismissed it as being too good to be true.
And yet it is, according to the aptly titled Good Fortune.

Patricio Guzmán's Nostalgia for the Light won Best Feature at the International Documentary Association's Awards ceremony in Los Angeles last night. The La Times' Susan King: "Set in northern Chile's Atacama Desert, the documentary juxtaposes scenes of astronomers in observatories scanning the galaxies, while nearby, archaeologists and elderly women dig through the sand searching for the human remains of pre-Columbian mummies, 19th century miners who labored in slave conditions and the bodies of victims of Gen Augusto Pinochet's regime who were taken to the Atacama as political prisoners and dumped there." Michael Guillén interviewed Guzmán in October 2010.
TheWrap's Steve Pond notes that neither Nostalgia nor any of the other docs nominated for the Ida's top award — Better This World, How to Die in Oregon, The Redemption of General Butt Naked and The Tiniest Place — have made the Academy's shortlist of 15 films left in the race for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar.

The Big Fix raises concerns over Obama administration's use of toxic chemical Corexit and Bp's leverage in the crisis
It's not every film that sets off on a mini-road trip with Peter Fonda, only to veer off into a night-vision goggle surveillance of a Bp facility.
But then, the events of last year's Bp oil disaster have so far been largely revisited in books, not documentaries. Until now, when a new documentary about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has its premiere at the New Orleans film festival.
The Bix Fix, by Josh and Rebecca Tickell, re-opens some of the most persistent questions about last year's oil spill. How Bp was able to exert so much control over the crisis as it unfolded? What were the long-term health consequences of using a toxic chemical, Corexit, to break up the oil and drive it underwater?

Environmental activist and documentary filmmaker Josh Tickell has become increasingly cynical in the last few years.
His 2008 feature debut “Fuel,” which played at Sundance that year, was “filled with the naivety and joy of green energy solutions,” he says. Now, his latest “The Big Fix”—which premieres today at the Cannes Film Festival—”strips away any shred of delusions, gets right to it and shows how the system runs.”

Documentary directors Josh and Rebecca Tickell made plenty of news with their Sundance doc Fuel, about America’s dependency on foreign oil and the financial prospects of bio-diesel fuel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh and Rebecca Tickell haven’t experienced anything like the growing controversy over their new documentary The Big Fix, about the corruption surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and its massive clean up. “We are taking on the oil companies, the U.S. government, the military and the banks,” Josh Tickell said at Cannes. “And we are exposing something that the U.S. media didn’t cover. So there is danger.”...

A couple of years ago, the Toronto International Film Festival launched a new sidebar called City-to-City, devoted to focusing attention on a specific nation's cinema. They drew much criticism and protest over their inaugural selection of Tel Aviv, sparked by Toronto filmmaker John Greyson's withdrawal of his film from the short film competition. Tiff defended its decision, claiming it was an innocent selection based purely on cinema, rejecting that their were ill-advised political undertones with the choice. Cannes is starting up its own like-minded section this year, albeit smaller, simply calling their selected country a "Guest Country". They've picked Egypt to jumpstart this to-be annual feature. The selection of Egypt is politically motivated, for sure, but for obvious reasons it's unlikely to draw the same level of ire as Tiff's Tel Aviv pick. The January 25 uprising that led to a national revolution arose from a strenuous world-wide battle that...

Here's a brief list of some interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
The Devil In the White City – Cobb's next case could be a nightmare. Inception's Leonardo DiCaprio has snagged the rights to this serial killer's tale about a doctor who set up shop at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and may have claimed the lives of nearly 200 women.
Untitled Ice Cube/David O. Russell Project – Ice Cube must be feeling lucky. The actor-producer is channeling Clint Eastwood's trigger-happy Detective, Dirty Harry, for a new project he's developing with his Three Kings director, David O. Russell.
Frankie Goes Boom – Making yet another move from the small screen to the big time, "Party Down"'s Lizzy Caplan, "Sons of Anarchy"'s Charlie Hunnam and "The IT Crowd"'s Chris O'Dowd join Ron Perlman (also riding along in "Anarchy") in this indie comedy from March of the Penguins scribe Jordan Roberts.
Hot, Rich & Green – Fuel filmmakers Rebecca and Josh Tickell are working on their next eco-documentary about the "secret formula women are using to get rich and save the planet." The documentary will interview scientists, business owners, authors and actors on how make a difference, make a profit and make it look good.
Hypergraphia – Independent filmmaker Lorenzo DeStefano takes on the yeoman's task of adapting the longest recorded diary in the English language—17 million words to be exact. Based on the work of early 20th century poet, Arthur Inman, the film tells the tale of a man obsessed with connectivity.

Ausfilm’s Tracey Vieira reports from Ausfilm Week – perhaps the agency’s hardest week ever.
Attracting offshore production has never been harder. The once booming industry that attracted large budget feature films, movies of the week and television series from the USA has taken so many hits that Australia is no longer one of the standard locations studios do budget comparisons for when looking at potential filming locations.
As a result, the infrastructure that is a legacy of such production, sits unused and crew are finding work outside the film industry or moving overseas to follow the work that is happening. While unemployment in Australia is generally at a low, in the film industry – it is at a high.
No one event has triggered this impact more than the strength of the Australian dollar against the Us currency. As the dollar has shot up to a 27-year high after fulltime...

A good natured cheer-leading session for clean vehicles, .Fuel. is several measures short of the intensity it will take to put Hummers where they belong---in museums The latest addition to the plethora of environmental films is Josh Tickell.s flamboyant .Fuel.. The film launches a socio-political debate on the control and distribution of energy starting with the gas tank and going forward. This is a non-technical film written for complete accessibility by a large cross-section of the nation. Specifically it seems aimed at teens and liberal arts college students and centers much of its analysis of global change on America.s love affair with the automobile. New director Josh Tickell has a unique point of view from which to describe climate...

Fuel is a documentary about oil, but it is not about the use of petroleum as the energy source for America's cars, light bulbs and computers. The film presents crude oil and its byproducts as the fuel that powers the military-industrial complex, political corruption, corporate greed, environmental destruction, and disease. While Fuel's labeling of oil as the root cause of all of those scourges at times goes too far (especially when tying oil directly to 9/11 and its aftermath), it provides compelling evidence of at least partial causality. Director Josh Tickell and the main character of Fuel, biodiesel. The narrative of Fuel follows the life of its director, Josh Tickell, and his near-lifelong quest to cleanse America of its addiction to oil by tirelessly promoting clean, renewable alternatives to petroleum power. Tickell's story begins in Louisiana, the heart...

The debate in America over alternative sources of energy should not be a political one. We use far more oil and power than any other country in the world per capita and even Nixon called for a push away from fossil fuels and non-renewable energy back in the 1970s. This isn't about taking anybody's Hummer away. It's about moving past a 19th century technology in the 21st century.
Even in the 1920s, there were experiments with alternative fuels; Howard Hughes designed a car that could travel from L.A. to San Francisco on water alone.
The problem, aside from the $500,000 price tag at the time, was what would happen with all that steam if there was an accident. But it was out there.
You could even go back further to the invention of Rudolf Diesel in 1897. And though diesel has received a bad...
