A Disney Nordic Noir? When’s the last time that happened? Probably never, but Deadline reports that’s what Disney+ has on the way as a six-part limited series. The streamer has an adaptation of Mikael Niemi‘s 2017 novel “To Cook A Bear” on the way, a 19th-century period piece that sees a runaway boy and priest team up to search for a killer bear in the nearby wilderness.

Disney+ has unveiled its debut Nordic original, an adaptation of Swedish author Mikael Niemi’s To Cook a Bear.
Anagram Sweden’s six-parter takes place in the mid-nineteenth century in the village of Kengis, northern Sweden, centering on a runaway Sami boy who develops a deep relationship while investigating an unexpected murder mystery.
While a Pastor has a spiritual awakening that profoundly impacts the Sami and Tornedalians, the body of a shepherd’s girl is found in a bog. Soon the villagers set out in search of the killer bear they think is on the rampage. Swedish screenwriter Jesper Harrie is penning the adaptation and Anagram Sweden is producing.
Vibeke Lia, Director of Programming and Production for Disney’s Nordics and Baltics, described the show as “everything we want to offer our adult audience, a deep, rich story set in a truly grand Nordic Noir scenery.”

Four films -- all literary adaptations -- from the fest's competition section this year will be presented on the opening day of the book fair: David MacKenzie's Asylum, based on the novel by Patrick McGrath; Mike Mills' Thumbsucker, adapted from Walter Kirn's novel; Robert Guediguian's The Last Mitterand, from the book by Georges-Marc Benamou; and Popular Music From Vittula, the Reza Bagher adaptation of the Mikael Niemi novel. The Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's largest publishing industry trade gathering set for Oct. 19-23, also will offer "speed dating" sessions for producers hunting for book rights. The one-to-one sessions among producers, international publishers and agents will be set up by the fair, with participants receiving a catalog of book rights available for film development.
