Two years after he leapt to the forefront of the New Hollywood with The Godfather, and just months before he picked up the threads of that operatic crime saga with the magnificent sequel/prequel The Godfather Part II, Francis Ford Coppola released a quiet movie, one in which sound itself — and, more specifically, its surreptitious recording — is the narrative engine. Arriving during a particularly fertile era for American film, The Conversation was not a hit, but it is one of the period’s most subtle and shattering features. Half a century later, it resounds as hauntingly as ever, not merely as a cautionary tale but as a searing portrait of where we are now.
The movie took its New York bow on Coppola’s 35th birthday, April 7, 1974, a few weeks before its Palme d’Or triumph in Cannes. Today the octogenarian writer-director is again preparing to compete on the Croisette,...

Kim Gwizdala and Nikka Markarian have driven four hours to be here today. They’ve dressed in Dallas-style outfits (cropped jackets and black suede cowboy boots) and are sporting Reagan-era ’dos (blown out and heavily feathered). And now, these best friends from Las Vegas, both 32, will spend several more hours in line at a hotel in Burbank, waiting to meet the 83-year-old actress who, decades ago — before Gwizdala and Markarian were even born — played J.R. Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders series six episode six “Lock and Key”.
It’s almost two years since Tommy Shelby disappeared over the horizon on a white horse, having dismantled the life he’d spent over a decade building through blood and strategising. Where Cillian Murphy’s character rode to after the credits rolled on Peaky Blinders finale “Lock and Key” is anybody’s guess, a question mark that Murphy adores.
Speaking to Lauren Laverne for BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs a month before the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony, Murphy – who received a Best Actor nomination for Oppenheimer – praised Peaky Blinders’ inconclusive finale, telling Laverne: “I felt like we’d done such excellent work and I really loved the ambiguity of the ending.”
Leaving behind the character of Tommy Shelby, Murphy continued, “was a little bit of a relief at that point. I was ready to take a little break.

During one of Hollywood’s major events, making a mistake in pronouncing a nominee’s name during live interviews is something to avoid. On the red carpet at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham commented when E! Emmys Red Carpet host Laverne Cox mispronounced her name as “Hannah Waddington.” Hannah corrected it, emphasizing it’s “ham” as in “Waddingham,” not “ton.” Laverne took it lightly, insisting she’d remember for the future. The pair then proceeded with their red carpet interview and, prior to concluding, Laverne took a moment to stress that the actress’s name was “Waddingham, not ton,” prompting Hannah to reiterate the importance of “getting it right” once more. Despite the hiccup, both stars looked stunning at the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Hannah wore a beaded gown with a deep v-neckline and a feather-filled train, while Laverne dazzled in a low-cut black...

Actor John Ritter hoped to realize the same success he had in Three’s Company with his spin-off show Three’s a Crowd. But certain decisions made with the program didn’t sit well with a section of the show’s audience.
What fans didn’t like about John Ritter’s ‘Three’s a Crowd’ John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt, and Suzanne Somers | ABC Photo Archives/Getty Images
Three’s Company enjoyed an incredible run for the eight seasons it ran on air. At its peak, the series was both a ratings and critical juggernaut, earning its cast and crew accolades like the Emmys and Golden Globes. Even after losing one of their key actors, the late Suzanne Somers, the show continued its momentum. Jenilee Harrison was brought on board to pick up where Somers left off, fitting right in with Ritter and Joyce DeWitt.
But Three’s Company lost considerable steam during its final season.

It was the period that produced Jessica Rabbit, a cartoon character you felt embarrassed to watch with your parents, and a time when stores regularly stocked movie tie-in toys linked to “kid-friendly” fare like Aliens and Terminator 2.
It seemed like nothing was off the table and that was certainly the case in the world of cartoons. Eager to cash in on the appeal of cinematic properties in a way that would give even the MCU pause for thought, a glut of animated shows inspired by movies featuring torture, nudity, beheadings, and buckets of toxic waste found their way onto the small screen. In most cases, the cartoons spawned rarely stuck around for long, but today they stand as examples of a weird and wonderful chapter in the history of small screen entertainment.

Richard Moll, the fun-loving actor who portrayed the towering and tenderhearted bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon on all nine seasons of the popular NBC sitcom Night Court during its original run, has died. He was 80.
Moll died peacefully Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, his publicist announced.
Suitable for his 6-foot-8 frame, Moll played an abominable snowman alongside Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach in the comedy feature Caveman (1981), and he was a scary, decomposing Vietnam veteran in the horror film House (1986).
Moll also did lots of voiceover work, with a regular gig as the immortal bodyguard Norman on the syndicated series Mighty Max and turns as Harvey Dent/Two-Face for three Batman cartoons.
Moll had a shaved head — he did that to play the warrior Hurok in the sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) — when he auditioned for the role of Shannon on Night Court, created by Reinhold Weege.

Only a couple of sitcoms can claim to be a true juggernaut of American television. You have "Seinfeld," "Friends," and the granddaddy of them all, "I Love Lucy." Amongst that group is without a doubt "Three's Company," a show that dominated in the late 1970s and early '80s, and sadly, one of the show's core trio has passed away. As reported by Page Six, Suzanne Somers, best known for playing the ditzy blonde Chrissy on "Three's Company," has died at the age of 76, just one day before her birthday. Somers had been battling with breast cancer since the early 2000s, often promoting alternative and controversial treatments for the condition.
Somers, who also was one of the stars of the long-running show "Step by Step," had a wild up-and-down career in the business after her exit from "Three's Company," but she always managed to find ways to stay in the...

Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and they want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”
The actress also was known for her roles on She’s the Sheriff and Serial Mom.

Don’t let the word “bike” fool you. In Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” the wheels in question are choppers — good, all-American motorcycles, built from the ground up by tough guys in leather jackets — and the “club” they’re a part of is really more of a gang. Nichols hails from the Heartland and has a better handle on the life and attitudes one finds in so-called flyover country than nearly all the directors working at his level. You’ve probably seen a few of his films, most of which take place down dirt roads in rural areas. Movies like “Shotgun Stories,” “Loving” and “Mud.”
With “The Bikeriders,” Nichols brings us into the big city — or the outskirts, at least — and then zeroes in on a social microcosm all of us recognize, but few have penetrated: a Chicago-area motorcycle club that calls itself the Vandals. The Vandals don’t really exist,...

In its prime, Happy Days was responsible for a few spinoff series, from the inspired (Mork & Mindy) to the insipid (Joanie Loves Chachi). But the most popular was clearly Laverne & Shirley. After Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall made three appearances on Happy Days, the characters of Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney were given their own show, which quickly rivaled Happy Days in popularity — in fact, during Laverne & Shirley’s third season, it actually surpassed Happy Days to become the #1 show of the season. Laverne & Shirley wound up airing for eight seasons, producing 178 episodes. We spoke to Williams many times over the years before her death this past January, and she told us the success of Laverne & Shirley came as a surprise to her and Marshall. On a June afternoon in Austin, a clip reel of scenes from comedies like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Laverne & Shirley, Cheers, and Friends has an audience at the annual Atx Television Festival howling with laughter. But one person watches with tears in his eyes: TV veteran James Burrows, who, over the span of a five-decade career, directed all these famous faces — Moore, Ted Danson and Shelley Long, Kelsey Grammer, and Jennifer Aniston — and helped shaped their now-classic sitcoms into the shows we know and love. As Atx honored Burrows, 82, with the festival’s Achievement in Television Excellence award, TV Guide Magazine’s West Coast bureau chief moderated a discussion with the 11-time (!) Emmy winner. It was a walk down memory lane that included everything from his first big break to the secret of his directing success to whether we’ll ever see a Cheers reboot. Valerie Harper, Mary Tyler Moore...

We’re not sure if Carrie is really ready for a new relationship on And Just Like That…, but Younger alum Peter Hermann is not a bad place to start, huh?
Carrie has a classic meet-cute with Hermann’s character George this week on the streets of New York: She wanders into the bike lane just as he’s speeding up, and he swerves to avoid her, crashing his bike and hurting his wrist in the process. She takes him to urgent care and helps him fill out forms — and we’re sensing a bit of a spark between them.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

George Lucas' "Star Wars" (which eventually acquired the subtitle "Episode IV — A New Hope") transformed cinema in a myriad of ways when it blasted onto movie screens in the summer of 1977. The richly imagined tale of a young Tatooine farm boy who becomes the unlikely hero of a galactic rebellion sent kids staggering out of theaters with grandiose dreams of saving the universe. A mere two years after the end of the Vietnam War, America was hungry for a return to the righteousness of World War II flicks and John Wayne Westerns. "Star Wars," along with "Jaws" and "Rocky," spun that beautiful, aspirational lie. These characters — particularly the trinity of the naive hero, the strong-willed princess, and the charming rogue — were who we wanted to be.

HBO formally announced a new “Game of Thrones” spin-off series last week as part of the unveiling of the new streaming service Max, and while the new show adapts one of George R.R. Martin’s most beloved Westeros stories, its title leaves out the names of the two main characters. As it turns out, there’s a good reason for that.
The working title for the new show is “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight,” but it’s based on a collection of tales known as “Dunk & Egg.” Writing on his blog, Martin explained why “Dunk & Egg” was not seriously considered as a title for the new show.
“The working title will be ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.’ Whether that will be the final title, I can’t say for sure… beyond saying that no, it won’t be called ‘Tales of Dunk & Egg...

Los Angeles, April 16 (Ians) Author George R.R. Martin has shared why he didn’t want the new ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff which is tentatively titled ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’ not called ‘Dunk & Egg’.

HBO reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the “Game of Thrones” franchise this week by ordering a full season of a new spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight” just days after “House of the Dragon” began production on Season 2. The new series, which follows the adventures of a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, is based on a series of novellas that Martin began publishing in 1998.
Those who have paid attention to the endless pipeline of “Game of Thrones” shows in development will recognize the project, as Martin has been open about wanting to make a show about the characters. The series has been commonly referred to as “Dunk & Egg,” as the two characters are often colloquially called. But in a new post on his personal blog, Martin explained why they ultimately had to go with a more distinguished-sounding title.

In Warner Bros. Discovery's quest to double and triple down on all of their most successful properties, we will be heading back to the world of Westeros yet again for a forthcoming series that is rather exhaustively titled (at least for now) "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight." If you are not steeped in the lore of George R.R. Martin's books, that title looks like a bit of gobbledygook. I mean, it has the word "knight" in it twice. Just from an aesthetic perspective, you would think HBO would want to clean that up a bit. The title also gives the impression that if it gets greenlit for a second season, we'll start following a different knight.
The much more simple title for the series would be "Dunk and Egg," as this show will follow the journey of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire...

Cindy Williams’ final television project, Sami, has gotten a premiere date on Prime Video. The 10-episode short-form comedy/musical series will launch April 23 on the Amazon streaming service.
The series wrapped just two months before Williams died following a brief illness at the age of 75.
Created by Williams’ longtime friend, Grammy-nominated music producer Bruce Kimmel, the series stars Kerry O’Malley and newcomer Sami Staitman.
Sami follows the adventures of Sami Sherman (Staitman), a young girl trying to make it as an aspiring Broadway actress/singer in New York City. O’Malley plays her mother and Williams plays her grandmother. Check out a clip of Williams above.
