Nikias Chryssos' Der Bunker was one of the oddball breakout films of last year. This debut feature from the director follows the strange story of a student looking for a room to rent so he can work on a long term project in peace. When he answers an ad for a room that happens to be in an underground bunker in the middle of the woods, there's no way he could've predicted what he was in for. An isolated family has created their own world under the forest in which they are preparing their young son, Klaus, to become the future president of the Us. It isn't exactly going to plan... Peter Martin saw the film at Fantastic Fest last year and was impressed Making...

Just in time for the beginning of the school year, Nikias Chryssos' Der Bunker arrives on Blu-ray and DVD. It is a strange one. Quoting from the official synopsis: "A student (Pit Bukowski, Der Samurai) rents a room in a bunker home nestled deep within a forest. Here, instead of finding tranquility for his studies, the young man becomes increasingly involved in the dramas of his landlord's family." I saw the film at Fantastic Fest last year and found it quite odd and betwitching ... eventually: Making his feature debut, Nikias Chryssos spends the first part of the film setting up a pitch black comedy, filled it with the sort of mean-spirited, intentionally bizarre, and absurd humor that normally makes my skin crawl. Without giving...

German language cinema has made a number of entries into genre fare over the past year, from the horror film Goodnight Mommy to the one-take thriller Victoria, complementing a stable of well-regarded dramatic fare that includes films such as Das Boot, Funny Games, and The Lives of Others. Newcomer Nikias Chryssos, however, is poised to add to the fare with his feature filmmaking debut Der Bunker. The film’s synopsis is as follows.
A young student seeks quiet and solitude to focus on an important work but ends up as the teacher of a peculiar boy who is home-schooled by his parents in an isolated bunker mansion.
Chryssos takes on both writing and directing duties for the film, which made its Us Premiere at the 2015 Fantastic Fest. The cast includes Pit Bukowski, Daniel Fripan, and Oona von Maydell, and the film’s Us trailer has now been released. The trailer can be seen below,...

It’s hard for a mother to remain unemotional when she watches her baby leave the proverbial coop, but Der Bunker is what happens when those feelings manifest into a hostage scenario of sorts. It’s your atypical twisted fairytale about a boy, locked away from the world without any sense of maturation, but that’s only where we begin. Der Bunker then delves into absolute insanity by introducing the likes of a festering wound that oversees the homemade prison like a God, primitive punishments, and questionable breastfeeding practices – a line of brilliance that German filmmaker Nikias Chryssos dances upon with unimaginable ferocity.
Pit Bukowski plays a young academic (referred to as “Student”), who seeks quiet refuge so he can advance the realms of science with his new Higgs particle theory (science-y stuff). Upon entering his newly rented room, the student meets a family who is as frugal as they are strange.

Der Bunker
Written & Directed by Nikias Chryssos
Germany, 2015
Der Bunker is like some abandoned back-alley shopping cart full of fascinating curiosities that don’t quite tell a complete story. The feature debut of German director Nikias Chryssos is a Lynchian labyrinth of disconnected weirdness that still feels oddly satisfying. A horror-comedy that strives to disturb rather than scare, Der Bunker meticulously creates a world of perverse pleasures.
Things start innocently enough with the Student (Pit Bukowski) responding to an advertisement about an apartment for rent… in a secluded bunker. “Didn’t the ad mention a lake view?” he asks the peculiar caretaker, known only as Father (David Scheller). The Student is looking for peace and quiet to finish his tangential research on Higgs particles, so a bunker in the middle of the German wilderness seems like the perfect setting for uninterrupted solitude. Too bad his renters have other plans for him.

Read More: Arstploitation Films Acquires Bizarre German Comedy 'Der Bunker' A twisted and bizarre new trailer has been released for the German black comedy "Der Bunker." The film, directed by Nikias Chryssos, had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, and will play at this year's Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. The above trailer sees a young graduate student going to live with a family in their windowless, underground bunker (as all families have), so that he may better focus on a project he describes only as "scientific." Once the young man has been hermetically sealed away with the bizarre husband and wife, they task him with tutoring their son, Klaus. Unfortunately for the young academic, Klaus is a nearly unteachable student, and the longer he stays in the bunker, the harder it is to tell whether Klaus or his parents are more deranged.

Artsploitation Films has secured the U.S. rights to "Der Bunker," a German comedy that premiered at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival. "Der Bunker," the debut feature from Nikias Chryssos, is a dark comedy set entirely within a windowless bunker housing a husband, wife and their learning-challenged son. A young graduate student soon enters the bunker to tutor the son...whom the parents are grooming to be president of the United States. Artsploitation's president Ray Murray described the film as, "So peculiar yet amazingly memorable," and said, "I felt we had to have this odd comedy. Reminiscent of the works of John Waters, David Lynch and Luis Buñuel, Chryssos creates a reality where conventional story-telling, and its accompanying logic, is left outside the steps, it will be a pleasure to present it to unsuspecting audiences!" Young German director Nikias Chryssos first appeared in these pages way back in 2009 with his acclaimed short film Tower Block and he now returns with his debut feature film - the dark satire The Bunker. A young student is lodging with a family in the forest where the peace and seclusion of their subterranean bunker will allow him to concentrate on an academic work. The family welcomes him with great friendliness and, at first, everything seems to be fine. But after a while the parents increasingly use the student as a private tutor for their eight year old son, Klaus, who up until now has been educated exclusively by his father at home. They want the boy to receive a comprehensive education - this...

The 2015 Berlinale runs February 5-15. The first wave of titles includes five feature-length films and two shorter ones spanning many distinct genres and styles. "The Bunker" (dir. Nikias Chryssos) “creates a world of its own, somewhere between an absurd comedy, a horror film, a melodrama and a B movie... A young student seeks quiet and solitude to focus on an important work but ends up as the teacher of a peculiar boy who is home-schooled by his parents in an isolated bunker mansion.” "Spiderwebhouse" (dir. Mara Eibl-Eibesfeldt) “turns a social drama into a modern, black-and-white fairy-tale that hovers on the line between reality and childlike fantasy. A single mother (Sylvie Testud) who fails to live up to the role model of a loving and caring mother, and so disappears for a time, triggers a tale about the strong bond that develops between her three left-behind children.” "HomeSick" (dir. Jakob M. Erwa), "the second full-length.

As someone who programs short films for various festivals, let me give this word of advice to prospective film makers. Don’t make a forty minute film. At forty minutes, your film will be about twenty minutes too short to be considered a feature by festival standards and yet so long that it will take up nearly half of a conventional short film program. A forty minute short doesn’t have to be better than just one film to be programmed, it has to be better than about five other shorts combined because that’s how much space it’s going to take up. Make a forty minute short and you’ve virtually guaranteed that nobody is going to see it, ever.
And so, with that basic reality in mind, when I see a forty minute short that’s actually out there on the festival circuit, not just getting programmed...

- Sort of like what the Sundance labs do to nurture promising (mostly U.S) filmmaker talent, the Cannes Résidence, presided by Gilles Jacob, does the exact same with world talents. This year's six new candidates include the Mexican helmer Francisco Vargas Quevedo whose festival favortie El Violin (The Violin) garnered international acclaim and he is joined by Rebecca Daly (Irish, 28 years old), Nikias Chryssos (German, 29 years old), Adrian Sitaru (Romanian, 36 years old), Manuel Nieto Zas (Uruguayan, 35 years old) and Yang Heng (Chinese, 32 years old). Each year twelve participants are selected and invited to live in Paris for four and a half months as they embark on a course designed to help them in the writing and production of their films, with invaluable help and support from film professionals. The Résidence has received more than ninety directors since 2000, and assisted in the making of some fifty films. Recent examples include
