"What do we know about war?" "Enough to fake one." Vertical Ent. has released the official trailer for an indie comedy titled How to Fake A War, from filmmaker Rudolph Herzog (son of Werner Herzog). This seems to be an updated take on Wag the Dog, centering the need to start a fake war around a global charity concert called "Piece of Peace". When an unexpected outbreak of peace leads to a ceasefire between Russian forces and Georgian rebels, a publicist tries to make a fake war so the concert doesn't end up cancelled. The film stars Jay Pharoah, Katherine Parkinson, Lily Newmark, Daryl McCormack, Ali Cook, and Samuel Vargu. This looks a bit too wacky, and somewhat careless, to actually connect with audiences this year. Not only is it a cheesier Wag the Dog, but there doesn't seem to be much nuance to this. Check it out. Here's the...

Shown at this year’s Frightfest, The Cunning Man is not the most obvious of shorts to be playing at that festival. Inspired by John Harries (1785-1839) a physician and ‘cunning man’ – a healer who uses folklore magic; the film tells the story of an elderly and mysterious farmer who drifts through the Welsh valleys collecting dead animals. What he has in store for those animals soon becomes apparent.
The Cunning Man looks fantastic. You’d be forgiven for believing that this is just an extract from a big-budgeted full feature film. There’s some really nice cinematography, with lingering shots on animals – first some dead flies and then a sheep that are near enough perfect. Using farmland and the countryside, in just a few brief shots you get a feel of the location,...

Simon Rumley (director of Red, White & Blue, Fashionista & Crowhurst) has begun a six week shoot on the brutal gangster thriller Once Upon a Time in London – for Gateway Films – which dramatises the violent reign of two of London’s most notorious gangsters, Billy Hill (Leo Gregory) and Jack ‘Spot’ Comer (Terry Stone), charting the legendary rise and fall of a nationwide criminal empire that lasted until the mid-fifties and which paved the way for the notorious Kray Twins and The Richardsons.
Director and co-writer Simon Rumley commented:
Having spent the last decade or so writing and directing thematically disparate but collectively extreme dramas, it makes absolute sense for me to progress to the gangster genre where love, lust, greed, paranoia, betrayal and violence are every day occurrences. The story of Jack Spot Comer, Billy Hill and their respective battles to become King of London’s Underworld has remained one of Britain’s most dynamic,...

This time it's for real. Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a sci-fi action film called The Call Up, from writer/director Charles Barker about a virtual reality video game that turns out to be more than just a simple, harmless video game. The story follows a group of gamers invited to participate in a brand new shoot-'em-up virtual reality experience, but they soon discover it may not be a "game" after all. This sounds like it's borrowing the Ender's Game concept and combining it with the virtual reality craze. The cast includes Max Deacon, Morfydd Clark, Ali Cook and Christopher Obi. It actually looks like it has some solid action, but I'm not sure if the rest will be any good. The suits look a bit cheesy. Take a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Charles Barker's The Call Up, in high def from Apple:...

Unsuspecting gamers play a deadly multiplayer shooter in the Brit sci-fi offering, The Call Up. Ryan takes a look...
Philip K Dick once wrote that reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, refuses to go away. In The Call Up, a bunch of online shooter fanatics get caught in a virtual reality game that, even when they no longer want to play it, won’t be turned off.
This is the first feature from writer-director Charles Barker, and, just in time for Vr technology’s (apparent) second wind, The Call Up wades into the topic of gaming and the warping of reality. That is: what happens when a videogame becomes a little too realistic for comfort?
Set in an apparently deserted office block in New York, The Call Up sees a disparate group of strangers take part in a competition with an enticing star...

The King’s Speech producer Gareth Ellis-Unwin on board British soldier drama, which will be released as troops return from Afghanistan later this year.
Shooting began last week on Kajaki, a battlefield drama based on the true story of British soldiers who became trapped in a minefield in Afghanistan. The film will shoot on location in Jordan for six weeks.
Paul Katis will make his feature directorial debut with the film, which has been written by Tom Williams (Chalet Girl), and Gareth Ellis-Unwin, producer of The King’s Speech, is executive producer for Bedlam Productions.
Based on first-hand accounts, the film depicts an incident involving a group of soldiers - mostly from the British Army’s 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment [3 Para] - who were trapped in a minefield while stationed at the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan in 2006.

Stars: Noel Clarke, Ian Somerhalder, Luke Hemsworth, Brian Cox, Alexis Knapp, Niall Greig Fulton, Michael Bisping, Ali Cook, Art Parkinson, Reuben Dabrow, Victoria Broom | Written by Simon Lewis | Directed by Noel Clarke
Review by Andrew McArthur
Noel Clarke‘s third directorial feature sees him in front of the cameras once again in science-fiction action piece, The Anomaly.
Set in the future, a former-soldier Ryan (Clarke) wakes up holding a young boy captive, with no memory of how he got there. After nine minutes forty-seven seconds, he blacks out waking up several days later in a new location with a mysterious figure (Ian Somerhalder), until blacking out again. In these brief moments of consciousness it is up to Ryan to piece together his surroundings, until he gradually discovers a wider conspiracy featuring bio-technology and mind control.
The Anomaly is reminiscent of these late eighties/early nineties sci-fi actioners like Timecop and Demolition Man.

Lord’s, First Test (day one, close of play):England 160-4 vs New Zealand
England struggled to 160-4 on the first day of the international cricket summer at Lord’s. A combination of a cautious England batting unit, keen to put the away series in New Zealand behind them, and a slow pitch and outfield, led to an uneventful first day at the home of cricket.
Cook and Compton started off determined and cautious, looking to build a platform for the innings on a difficult pitch for batting. After reaching an opening stand of 43 off 22 overs, Compton was dismissed dancing down the wicket to a Bruce Martin delivery, and providing an easy catch to Tim Southee at point. Anyone who has watched Compton bat down the years, or saw him bat in New Zealand, will say the shot was out of character. However, I think Compton was trying to assert himself on Martin,...
