The arrest of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, a former Southside Crips gang leader, in the murder of Tupac Shakur on Sept. 29, over 27 years after the legendary rapper’s killing in Las Vegas, sent shockwaves across the world. For over a decade, Keefe D had confessed that he’d ordered the murder, was in the car that pulled up next to the BMW carrying Tupac, and that his nephew Orlando Anderson, a fellow Crip who’d gotten into a scrap with Tupac hours earlier at the MGM Grand Hotel, had fired...

Johnny Depp isn’t interested in testing his luck with another jury. Fresh off his victory in the televised trial that showcased his bruising defamation battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, the actor reached a last-minute deal to avoid a civil trial in Los Angeles over claims he punched a location manager on the set of City of Lies in 2017, a Monday court filing reveals.

Johnny Depp’s “City of Lies” assault case reached a settlement Monday ahead of its scheduled trial start date.
The case, which was brought forth by “City of Lies” location manager Gregg “Rocky” Brooks, was scheduled to begin later this month. In 2018, Brooks filed a lawsuit accusing Depp of assault and battery on the “City of Lies” set in April 2017. Depp has denied the accusations.
According to the suit, Brooks claimed that Depp verbally and physically assaulted him during filming, including punching Brooks twice in the ribs, after Brooks was asked by a producer to extend the hours of a filming permit to accommodate Depp, who wanted to film two friends in an extended scene.

It’s been 24 and 23 years since the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, respectively, were brutally gunned down, and their deaths have become the grist for so many narrative features and documentaries that some filmmakers are now returning for seconds. British director Nick Broomfield first explored the crimes in his 2002 doc “Biggie and Tupac,” which has long been seen as the standard-bearer when it comes to films on this oft-visited subject. So why, then, is he returning to the same landscape now?
Based on its title, “Last Man Standing: Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie & Tupac” looks to recontextualize the case by positing that Death Row Records founder, Marion “Suge” Knight, was the instigator of one murder. But Broomfield’s focus ends up being far too scattered. For a while it’s a biographical doc: At times he seems more interested in how a man like Knight,...

Perhaps it’s only appropriate that a film detailing one of Los Angeles’ most infamous unsolved murder cases would have a long journey to the screen, but Brad Furman’s “City of Lies” had a bumpier road than most. Detailing LAPD detective Russell Poole’s investigation into the 1997 murder of Christopher Wallace – a.k.a. rapper the Notorious B.I.G. – Furman’s film was initially slated for theatrical release back in 2018, only for a lawsuit and financial trouble from the film’s initial distributor to leave it languishing for years.

, let alone when that true crime book is about two of the most notorious unsolved murders in human history, and the movie adapted from it was directed by Brad Furman (a solid base-hitter who’s still swinging for another “The Lincoln Lawyer”) and stars Johnny Depp as a retired LAPD detective who says things like “I’m obsessed with the truth, that’s my sickness.” Even if “City of Lies” hadn’t sat on the shelf for the last 30 months — its planned release in September 2018 was allegedly postponed because of a lawsuit that the film’s location manager filed against Depp — it wouldn’t exactly be a huge surprise that this under-baked and overstretched police thriller was a total waste of the roadkill-like hairpiece that Shea Whigham wears in it.

The Brad Furman-directed crime thriller City of Lies has had quite a journey, but the Saban Films release finally hits theaters today before dropping on digital and on demand April 9.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, City of Lies follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka the hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G.
Oscar and Emmy winner Forest Whitaker stars as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder. The two of them try to find the truth. They explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
It’s not a lie that City of Lies went through a lot to make its way to the theaters.

Who shot Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls? It’s crazy to think that a Hollywood movie can solve a homicide the Los Angeles Police Department couldn’t crack. But conspiracy-minded “City of Lies” — which opens 24 years and 10 days after the rap legend’s murder on March 9, 1997 — suggests that the Notorious B.I.G.’s death isn’t unsolved at all, but a cover-up of epic proportions.
According to buck-the-system screenwriter Christian Contreras (who cooks up lines like “There’s no such thing as law. There’s never been one that can overcome man’s nature”), the LAPD had a pretty good idea of who did it and deliberately chose to let the case go cold. That’s a bombshell if true and downright irresponsible if not — and not this critic’s place to speculate as to which — although one thing is certain: Such claims should make for a far more...

‘City of Lies.’
Last weekend’s broad new releases in Australian cinemas included a US crime thriller that was completed in 2018, a political satire that went straight to digital in the US and a melancholy UK drama about a marriage breakdown.
Not surprisingly, ticket sales languished as André Rieu’s Magical Maastricht – Together In Music was the only new title to post a decent per screen average.
Through Sunday, the national box office for the year to date stands at $330 million – a catastrophic 67 per cent decline on the $1.01 billion racked up in the same period in 2019.
Tellingly, the highest-grosser at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace last weekend was the Netflix-commissioned Rebecca, a remake of a 1940 Alfred Hitchcock classic adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic novel.
Directed by Ben Wheatley, the romantic thriller starring Lily James and Armie Hammer follows a young newlywed who arrives at her widower husband...

James is a disgraced firefighter who seizes a chance, illicit opportunity to reverse his life’s worsening course. When his plan veers dangerously off track, James must call on strength and fortitude he did not know he possessed in order to survive it all.
Epix has ordered a 10-episode first season, with shooting set to begin this fall in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a 2019 launch.
Steve Conrad and Bruce Terris serve as executive producers and showrunners, with Conrad also directing six episodes. Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will also executive produce.

City of Lies, the Brad Furman-directed crime thriller starring Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker and based on the true story behind the investigation into the murder of rap star Notorious B.I.G., has been pulled off its September 7 release date.
Global Road, which acquired the movie’s original distributor Open Road last summer, has not set a new date for the pic, we’re told. It was set to hit screens on what would have been the 46th birthday of the iconic rapper, aka Biggie Smalls, who was gunned down in 1997 in a drive-by in Los Angeles.
The news comes less than month after the film’s location manager sued Depp, accusing the actor of assault and battery on the set in April 2017. Gregg “Rocky” Brooks said he was repeatedly hit by Depp after being informed that filming that night in downtown L.A. was going to have to wrap late.

Johnny Depp has been sued for allegedly assaulting Gregg “Rocky” Brooks, a former location manager on Depp’s upcoming film City of Lies, per The Associated Press.
In the suit, Brooks said that Depp punched him twice in the ribs. He also accused the actor of verbally assaulting him and saying he’d pay the crew member $100,000 to hit him back. The suit, which Brooks’ lawyer filed Friday, also claims that he’d been fired from the film after he refused to sign an Nda that would prevent him from suing the actor.

Johnny Depp is being sued for allegedly punching location manager Gregg “Rocky” Brooks on the set of his upcoming film, “City of Lies.” Brooks filed a lawsuit against the actor on July 9, Variety reports. The location manager said the incident occurred on April 13, 2017, while the “City of Lies” production was filming outside the Barclay Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.
According to the lawsuit, the production was given permission to shoot outside the hotel until 7 P.M. and inside the hotel until 10 P.M. Brooks had to get the shooting permit extended twice to accommodate Depp because the actor wanted to perform a longer cut of a particular scene. Brooks said 11 P.M. was the latest he could get the shooting time inside the hotel extended and when he notified director Brad Furman that production would have to stop for the evening, the director replied, “Why don’t you tell that to Johnny Depp?...

When Lyah Beth LeFlore joined USA’s anthology series “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.” as a co-producer and music supervisor, she anticipated one big obstacle: not getting the rights to their music. The estates of both rappers are famously restrictive when it comes to licensing their songs, but LeFlore, who came up in the ‘90s hip-hop scene and knew the rappers personally, already had a plan to work around that.
“Having known and watched their relationship as friends, I didn’t expect to be able to get the music and sort of had the foresight to say, ‘Ok, if we can’t get it, and out of respect for the estates, what do I do?’” LeFlore said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Music panel, moderated by this author (watch above). “And I knew that it had to have an authentic sound, it had to connect to their legacies,...

"A murder like that only goes unsolved, if the police don't want to solve it." Global Road Entertainment has released the first official trailer for City of Lies, a new investigative thriller from director Brad Furman. The film is about how the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious Big spark an investigation, following an Lapd detective who has spent two decades trying to solve his biggest case. Johnny Depp stars as Detective Russell Poole, and co-stars with Forest Whitaker, a reporter named Jack Jackson. The full cast includes Toby Huss, Dayton Callie, Neil Brown Jr., Shea Whigham, Xander Berkeley, Melanie Benz, Shamier Anderson, Christian George, and Michael Paré. This looks okay, but doesn't seem like anything more than a standard detective thriller set in La, even though the crime they've investigating is very well knonw. Might have some slick twists and turns. Check it. Here's the first official trailer for...

Lionsgate’s Johnny Depp-starring movie “City of Lies” has been licensed to startup distributor Sweet Charm Media for release in China. The deal was closed at the Cannes Film Festival.
The fact-based film is directed by Brad Furman and sees Depp appear as a detective, Russell Poole, many of whose cases were not adequately solved. He began investigating the Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur murders. Poole failed to nail the killers in these cases too, but instead uncovered corruption within the Los Angeles Police Department. The film script was adapted by Christian Contreras from the book by Randall Sullivan. Production is by Good Films.
Sweet Charm, which was formed only in March, by Yoyo Qu, aims to give the film a release in the second half of the year — if possible in a day-and-day alignment with overseas outings.
“City of Lies” is to be released by Global Road Entertainment in North America on Sept.

Tonight, Season 1 of USA Network’s scripted true crime series “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” will end with an episode titled “Unsolved?” That sounds about right for creator Kyle Long, who believes it is actually pretty obvious what happened here. At least in the case of the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.
“I would say, in regards to the Tupac murder, I think it’s — you know — very clear what happened,” Long told TheWrap in an interview last week. “There’s elements of it that are questionable, but certainly Keffe D and the Southside Crips killed Tupac Shakur. And it is outrageous that Keffe D is not in jail. And that should be in the article.”
“In the [‘Unsolved’] finale, when you see why the whole Keffe D thing, how he had immunity and that — long story short, in real life and in the television show, he had immunity to make this confession to the task force,” Long said of the Southside Crips member and the late Orlando Anderson’s uncle, real name Duane Keith Davis. “When the task force fell apart he still had immunity.”

“But this guy, this year — no one is talking about this, but I guess people just don’t care about Tupac Shakur, a young black man — he, this guy goes on a documentary this year and tells a version of the same story, he tries to go all cute and say, ‘I don’t know who triggered there,'” Long said. “But he talked about being in the car with the Crips, they specifically went to hunt [Tupac] down and then Tupac gets shot, you just have to say who pulled the trigger.”
However, Long says it ultimately “doesn’t matter that he doesn’t say who pulled the trigger.”
“He went live on television and confessed to being an accessory to murder and the Las Vegas Pd, as far as I know, is doing nothing about it,” Long continued. “And I just think it’s outrageous. I just don’t understand it. It makes me upset. And it’s just crazy town to me. It is so wild that a guy can — and I don’t know what kind of lawyer he has telling him to go on this television show and talk about it, but you know, it’s crazy. So that’s my rant about Keffe D and the Tupac murder, like to me, that murder, you could go arrest someone for that right now.”

Long is referencing an episode of Bet’s “Death Row Chronicles” docuseries which aired in February and featured interviews with Davis and former Lapd detective Greg Kading about Shakur’s murder.
Kading, who wrote the book “Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations,” is one of the key characters in the show “Unsolved” (played by Josh Duhamel), as he led investigations into the murders of Shakur and Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls. He is also a co-executive producer on the USA series.
Multiple attempts by TheWrap to reach Davis for comment for this story were unsuccessful. All phone calls made to numbers associated with Davis went unreturned or led to disconnected lines. Emails sent to addresses associated with Davis and his relatives went unanswered. Both Bet and NBCUniversal did not have current contact information for Davis. Attempts to locate contact information for Davis through arrest records and to reach Wayne Higgins — an attorney who is listed in court documents as having previously represented Davis — were also unsuccessful.

“He’s so pared down and focused on one thing and I’m so used to elaborating on characters,” reveals actor Jimmi Simpson about his destructively obsessive character Russell Poole in the new USA limited series “Unsolved.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds that Poole is “trying to show how everyone has a sense of humor and everybody cares and there was no sense of humor in Russell Poole.”

USA Network’s Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. takes us into the way back — exploring two of the most mysterious and unsolved murders in history, those of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls (Christopher Wallace). Not since the disappearance and speculation of who killed Jimmy Hoffa and JonBenét Ramsey had a high profile American crime kept people guessing and so anxious to learn the truth. What makes this limited series percolate is that it draws from the real-life experiences of Greg Kading and Russell Poole, two former Lapd Detectives who each led separate investigations into the murders of...read more...

For a show called (branded, really) “Unsolved,” the first season certainly drives toward a definitive ending. The new USA anthology series serves as a detailed, time-jumping, and exploratory journey into multiple, years-long investigations, but it isn’t a nuanced take on the criminal justice system (or nuanced at all, for that matter). Nor is “Unsolved” a human story meant to honor the victims or the men seeking justice for their deaths. It plays out like a mystery, and by the end of the seventh episode (out of 10 total), “The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” takes a stand behind one theory.
For cable TV, perhaps that should be expected. It would take a lot of moxie to launch a franchise based around big questions without any answers — kind of like making an entire TV show based around a mystery that will never be solved — and USA’s...

Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and Biggie has a pretty big job to do when it premieres tonight on USA. The miniseries chronicles the 2007 investigations into both murders by Detective Greg Kading (Josh Duhamel), as well as the original investigation into Biggie's 1997 murder, led by Detective Russell Poole (Jimmi Simpson). At the center of it all are the two victims and beloved rap stars, Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Tupac is played by Marcc Rose (who played the same role in Straight Outta Compton) while Biggie is played by Wavyy Jonez. Both actors talked to E! News about the pressure to get it right. There have been a lot of shows featuring the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Most of them have been documentaries, and none of them have had the time devoted to them that Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. allows.
While I am a fan of true crime, I'm not a fan of rap music and found the history between the two men so complex it wasn't something I ever took the time to understand.
After watching the first seven hours of this impressive USA limited series, that's going to change.
If I knew little of the lives of Tupac and Biggie going into the series, I knew even less of what to expect of the production based on a book by Greg Kading, who is also one of the lead characters played by Josh Duhamel.
