TV host Josh Gates of Expedition Unknown had a chance to take a trip on the doomed Titan submersible but declined the opportunity because of fears the vessel was unsafe, he revealed on Twitter.
The Discovery Channel personality considered visiting the wreckage of the Titanic on the OceanGate Expeditions submersible. But a troubling dive with CEO Stockton Rush led Gates to cancel plans to film the most famous shipwreck site in history.
“I had the unique opportunity to dive in the @Oceangate #Titan sub with Stockton at the helm in preparation for its maiden mission to Titanic,” Gates tweeted on June 21.

A British TV presenter has revealed that, like Discovery+ explorer Josh Gates, he considered making a show in which he travelled to the wreck of the Titanic in an OceanGate sub – before rejecting the plan as “unsafe.”
The Sun reports that Ross Kemp – a veteran of daredevil documentary-making over the last two decades – had planned to make the show last summer, before pulling out.
His agent Jonathan Shalit told the paper:
“Their team checked out this OceanGate submersible and pulled out of using it, as it was simply not considered safe or fit for purpose.”

Mission: Possible
“Movies for the big screen”: Tom Cruise launched the latest edition of his sprawling Mission: Impossible franchise Monday afternoon with an elaborate red carpet hoisted up on the Spanish Steps in Rome, and Nancy and Baz were there to witness all. The eternal city and it’s famous stone staircase feature heavily in the film alongside the Piazza di Spagne, giving it quite the European feel. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the seventh entry in the wider franchise and is once again helmed by Cruise’s now-frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie. Updated with network’s statement: NewsNation responded to Deadline’s inquiry about the criticism of a running “Oxygen Counter” the network displayed onscreen yesterday while covering the unfolding tragedy of the sub that went missing near the Titanic wreck.
According to a NewsNation spokesperson:
The oxygen levels on the Titan submersible have always been an essential and important part of this story. Multiple media outlets have published or aired stories tracking the remaining oxygen on the Titan as the search continued. In fact, it would be irresponsible not to include this information in the story of the rescue effort.
Previously: Some watching NewsNation’s coverage yesterday of the OceanGate submarine that went missing while seeking to explore the wreck of the Titanic were surprised by a certain aspect of the broadcast.
No, it wasn’t Ashley Banfield’s investigation into whether a giant squid “attacked” the submersible. Rather, it was...

Josh Gates, an explorer and the host of “Expedition Unknown” and more shows on the Discovery Channel, revealed on Twitter that he turned down a chance to visit the wreckage of the Titanic using OceanGate’s now-missing Titan submersible. Gates was supposed to film on the submersible but decided against it after discovering “safety concerns.”
“I had the unique opportunity to dive in the OceanGate Titan sub with [company CEO] Stockton [Rush] at the helm in preparation for its maiden mission to Titanic,” Gates wrote. “I pray for a positive outcome to the rescue efforts of those aboard, including fellow ‘Explorers Club’ member Hamish Harding.”
Gates added, “To those asking, Titan did not perform well on my dive. Ultimately, I walked away from a huge opportunity to film Titanic due to my safety concerns with the OceanGate platform. There’s more to the history and design of Titan that has not been made public — much of it concerning.

Los Angeles, June 22 (Ians) Writer and former showrunner on the popular sitcom ‘The Simpsons’ Mike Reiss says he’s “not optimistic” about a rescue of the missing submarine that was exploring the Titanic wreckage.
He has an informed opinion – it’s a vehicle he has taken several trips on prior to this incident, reports deadline.com.
The submersible ‘Titan’ vehicle has been missing since June 18 in the North Atlantic, with five people on board.
“I know the logistics of it and I know how vast the ocean is and how very tiny this craft is,” he told BBC Breakfast on June 19.
“If it’s down at the bottom, I don’t know how anyone is going to be able to access it, much less bring it back up,” he said.

Mike Reiss, a writer for “The Simpsons,” had “constant trepidation” when he took a dive on OceanGate’s now-missing Titan sub 11 months ago.
“I kissed my wife goodbye, thinking that was the last time I might ever see her,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday as the rescue efforts continued for the five people aboard the Titan. Like every other passenger, he signed a waiver that this voyage in an uncertified vessel could end in death.
However, he found the sub’s simple design “reassuring” and admitted to falling asleep during the two-and-a-half-hour dive, even though he was “constantly knowing this could be the end.”

Britain’s Channel 5 has indicated it will air a quick-turn documentary on the Titan submersible that has gone missing near the wreck of the Titanic. The timing, however, might raise eyebrows.
The ITN-produced doc Titanic Sub: Lost at Sea is set to air at 7 p.m. Thursday in Britain. That’s just hours after the craft – which has five people aboard – is expected to run out of air. Obviously, if the sub is not found by then, there would be even more intense interest in the craft, its mission and those aboard.
Ian Rumsey, managing director of content for ITN issued a statement trying to reassure viewers.

Not even the Covid-19 pandemic could stop Shark Week. The annual Discovery Channel franchise, now in its 32nd edition, remains a juggernaut for the company — which this year is using Shark Week to launch five new series while giving the network (and cable in general) a needed boost.

The debut of Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” reboot earlier this month has brought about a clamoring for cold cases to be brought to justice. In that spirit, we’ve compiled a list of TV shows that have actually solved crimes, exonerated people, and found answers to the unknown, from “The Jinx” miniseries that lead to the arrest of Robert Durst, to “Extinct or Alive,” which found a living animal thought to have died out over a hundred years ago.
