Stars: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, Zosia Mamet | Written by S.J. Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker | Directed by S.J. Clarkson
Directed by S.J. Clarkson (whose Marvel credentials include the Jessica Jones series), Madame Web is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, following Morbius and the two Venom movies. Essentially revamping a classic character from Amazing Spider-Man comics (where Madame Web has always been portrayed as an old woman), the film serves as a standalone adventure with significant connections to a certain wall-crawling web-spinner.
After a jungle-set prologue detailing the mysterious, spider-heavy circumstances of her birth in 1973, the film jumps forward 30 years to 2003 and centres on Cassie Web (Dakota Johnson), a single paramedic, whose platonic best friend is one Ben Parker (Adam Scott), who’s about to become -yes!- an uncle. "Madame Web," released on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, frustrated audiences everywhere with its bizarre scripting, its lack of action, its weirdly unmotivated villain, and its staunch refusal to depict its lead characters actually turning into the superheroines they were destined to become. The title character was Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) a New York paramedic in 2003 who discovers she has clairvoyant powers. She traces the origin of her powers back to her birth in the Amazon rainforests, where a rare, mystical spider bit her pregnant mother. Her powers also bring her inexplicably into the company of three New York teenagers who will all become Spider-Women someday -- but not in this film.
Chasing the quartet is Spider-Man (Tahar Rahim), or rather an evil precursor to Spider-Man who has the same super-strength, the same costume, the same wall-crawling powers, and who shares Madame Web's talent for clairvoyance. He has seen a...

Madame Web always had a steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie's mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it was clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was... probably not going to be a big hit.
To be fair, Madame Web did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory.
We didn't review Madame Web here on Cbm when it was released in theaters, but if you're interested,...

When Madame Web hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, movie audiences met Cassandra Webb for the first time, and they were forever changed. On its surface, the film tells the story of a public servant drawn to the ultimate public service — clairvoyant superheroism. At heart, it’s a tale of failure, friendship, and ultimately redemption.
Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and it’s now streaming on Netflix. The Marvel multiverse continues to grow, and there’s no better time to catch up on the thriving world of characters who are peripherally related to Spider-Man. (Spoiler alert: Her web really does connect us all.)
Stream it right now.
So much happens. The film kicks off deep in the Amazon, where pregnant scientist Constance Webb (Bishé) is searching for a spider with special abilities. But she’s not alone. As Cassie Webb...

Netflix is an amazing place because its library boasts not only its originals, but also licensed movies and shows that people either didn't have the motivation or the opportunity to watch before. Not all of these movies and TV shows become smash hits, or even get rediscovered — a bad project usually stays bad, except for the extra views. Still, a Netflix subscription is a great way to watch something you didn't want to spend a movie ticket on.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe films are particularly notable in this regard. Following Netflix's exclusive deal with Sony in 2021, a number of films, including Ssu, have found their way to the streaming service sometime after their theatrical release.
Now, the critically and commercially disappointing Madame Web is coming to Netflix's library, and it's happening much sooner than originally expected. Let's take a look at which regions and when the movie will be available for streaming on Netflix.

Is Jessica Jones about to make her MCU return? While nothing is confirmed, a new Instagram post from Krysten Ritter has left fans convinced we'll see her reprise the role sooner rather than later.
As you can see below, Ritter is rocking some very cool purple hair. In the comics, when Jessica first became a superhero - then known as Jewel - she did so in spandex and with, you guessed it, pink/purple hair.
While the character later grew that out after becoming a P.I., some artists have portrayed her as still having those purple locks. Like Daredevil's expanded power set and colourful costumes, though, this would be a great way to softly reboot the character for Earth-616 after the grounded and gritty Jessica Jones.
Last April, Ritter responded positively when asked if she was open to returning as Jessica. "I have no idea; I hope so!

Sony has been struggling to find the secret formula to make their Spider-Verse movies satisfy audiences in the same way Marvel Studios has managed for the last decade-plus. Boiled down, it seems to come form a lack of coherent vision and weak scripts.
The critical despair and box office indifference to Madame Web is misplaced because it’s not the worst of the lot, but viewers are clearly tired of Sony misfires, which doesn’t bode well for the forthcoming Kraven.
The incredibly weak script from director Sj Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Claire Parke mars the potential found deep within the very disappointing Madame Web, out now from Sony Home Entertainment. The basic premise that four women are brought together as part of a woven tapestry of spider-powers is fine, as is importing Ezekiel (Tahar Rahim) from the Spider-Man comics to be the bad guy.
However, the script them all.

Even before Zendaya won an Emmy for starring in the popular HBO original drama Euphoria, she was a prominent figure in the Marvel film industry. Having said that, she is the only member of Sam Levinson’s series’ main cast who remains a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This will undoubtedly change if her Euphoria co-star, Sydney Sweeney, chooses to emulate Zendaya’s footsteps.
We are confident in Sweeney’s ability to carry out a variety of roles because of her work outside of the Cassie Howard role, such as her courageous performance in HBO’s The White Lotus. That is exactly the kind of talent Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, seeks in an actor when deciding who will play the next big Marvel characters on either the small or big screen.

Paramount is looking to get a new Star Trek film in cinemas in 2025 – but why this adventure, and where might things go? A few thoughts.
Another week, another Star Trek film announcement. So currently goes the online discourse for the seemingly endless array of Star Trek cinematic announcements we have experienced for almost ten years since the last big screen endeavour, Star Trek Beyond, in 2016.
As I in part chronicle in my book Lost Federations: The Unmade History of Star Trek, that decade has seen us face promises of movies including Chris Hemsworth returning as Captain James T Kirk’s legendary father in a time travel installment; Noah Hawley of Fargo fame penning a tale about a deadly virus (perhaps understandably shelved after a certain pandemic…); directors including Matt Shakman and Sj Clarkson coming and going; even Quentin Tarantino considering turning The Original Series gangster episode ‘A Piece of the Action’ into a movie event.

Paramount Pictures has finally unclogged the Star Trek franchise on the big screen – and a new film is landing in 2025.
Since 2016 and the release of Star Trek Beyond, it’s little secret that Paramount Pictures has been struggling to work out what to do with big screen Trek. While the franchise is thriving on the small screen, getting a new film going has proven taxing. Infamously, Quentin Tarantino was noodling with a possible project at one point, while director Sj Clarkson was hired at one stage too, before she went on to do Madame Web instead.
There’s been uncertainty as to whether the ‘Kelvin’ crew from the last three films would be back, and there’s been uncertainty over whether it’s all going to have a day-one reboot.
Now? We have an answer. Earlier this year there was the suggestion that Paramount was looking to do a Star Trek origin film.

Just a few months ago, we all saw Madame Web crash and burn in theatres. It wasn’t as meme-worthy as Morbius, but it was another fascinating misfire in Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent cinematic universe. Now that dumpster fire is coming to home video.

One would be forgiven for not having thought about "Madame Web" for several weeks, but as the movie's theatrical run has wound down, it has come to our attention that its running total is in a pretty darkly hilarious place. Sony's latest Marvel Comics adaptation is currently just a few dollars (relatively speaking) shy of breaking $100 million worldwide. And given that it doesn't seem to be playing in any theaters right now, it will probably be stuck just shy of that milestone in the history books.
Director S.J. Clarkson's "Madame Web" has sold $99,312,851 worth of tickets worldwide. That includes $43.8 million domestically. Relative to what superhero movies have been making in theaters over the past 20 years, less than $700,000 is right next to nothing. Unfortunately, a combination of factors led to this film's demise. Critics were generally pretty unkind to it. (You can read /Film's "Madame Web" review right here.

There's more "Star Trek" television right now that Trekkies know what to do with. Whether you prefer it when the franchise is philosophical yet whimsical in the manner of Gene Roddenberry's original ground-breaking series ("Strange New Worlds"), a mix of raunchy humor and emotionally mature sci-fi storytelling ("Lower Decks"), or embracing a "warm, flashy, 'heart dangling on the sleeve with such force that you might as well brace for an aerial spray' ethos" (as /Film's own Jacob Hall put it in his review of the "Discovery" season 5 premiere), there's something for "Trek" enthusiasts of ever shade right now -- again, on the small screen. Unfortunately, if you enjoy it when the property stretches its wings and takes flight in theaters, you've been plumb out of luck since 2016.
Indeed, the last eight years have been a never-ending cycle of news about "Star Trek" films being put into development, only to...

Actress Sydney Sweeney appeared as Julia Cornwall a.k.a. Spider-Woman in Sony Pictures’ 2024’s Madame Web alongside Dakota Johnson. Directed by S. J. Clarkson, the movie failed to perform according to the expectations of the studios. Madame Web is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and explores the origin story of Cassie Webb played by Johnson.
The actress rose to prominence by starring as Cassie Howard in Sam Levinson’s HBO series Euphoria alongside Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and more. She received appreciation for her brilliant performance and then there was no looking back for Sweeney. Sydney Sweeney revealed recently that she is willing to come back to the Spider-Man universe but with a condition.

Sydney Sweeney remains unfazed by the disastrous fate of Sony’s Madame Web after the Dakota Johnson-led film heavily tanked at the box office. The actress, who found success in her recent rom-com movie Anyone But You, does not let the rejection from fans affect her.
Sydney Sweeney in Madame Web
Sweeney played Julia Carpenter in the superhero movie alongside Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Johnson, who played the lead role of Cassandra Webb. It is part of the expansive Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Sydney Sweeney Is Unbothered By Madame Web’s Box-Office Failure
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, actress Sydney Sweeney got candid about her involvement in Sj Clarkson’s Madame Web. When asked how she truly felt about the movie’s disappointing result, she stated:
“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen.

It has been a month since Madame Web was released in theatres. The superhero movies stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Adam Scott, Emma Roberts and Celeste O’Connor. The movie mostly received negative reviews from the critics. Even the audience wasn’t impressed with the female superhero saga.

However, the movie mainly focused on Dakota Johnson’s Cassie Webb, whereas the three girls, who were supposed to be Spider-women, had no powers till the end. Emmy Award winner Jimmy Kimmel returns for the fourth time to host the biggest night in cinema. And he kicks off the event by poking fun at many things about Hollywood. Congratulating the audience for “making it on time,” the host in his monologue poked fun at Madame Web, the recent box office failure. And that was just one of many.

Amid the echoes of Dune: Part Two success, Tinseltown is getting overshadowed by Dakota Johnson’s latest career move, followed by the failure of Madame Web. The way the actress handled the catastrophic box office performance of her Marvel movie, and even left her talent agency WME for CAA, sparked a whirlwind of speculation and concern.
Dakota Johnson in Madame Web
Meanwhile, according to inside reports from Jeff Sneider, it has been revealed that although Dakota Johnson is being mocked for her Madame Web role, the actress was allegedly forced to join the cast. Reportedly coerced into leading the much-anticipated Madame Web, Johnson’s career was allegedly tanked on purpose.

Famously known for her appearance in the Fifty Shades trilogy, Dakota Johnson recently made her superhero debut with Marvel. However, the actress didn’t seem quite happy with her comic book movie or her role.

If you’ve spent any time online over the last few months, it’s really no surprise that Madame Web didn’t pull in huge box office numbers. From the “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died” meme that sprouted from the first trailer to Dakota Johnson’s brutally honest press tour promoting the movie, it’s been hard to take any part of this film seriously.
Nearly a month after Madame Web’s release, the verdict is in, both critically and financially: it’s not very good, currently holding a 13% Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has also only made $91 million globally, a flop by most standards, especially considering the movie reportedly cost $80 million to make, not counting its marketing push. What the hell happened for things to go so very wrong for Sony?

Following the critical and commercial failure of the Sony/Marvel pic Madame Web, don’t expect Dakota Johnson to reenter the superhero sphere any time soon.
In an interview with Bustle published on Tuesday, Johnson admitted, “I probably will never do anything like it again, because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.”
Johnson indicated that from the start, she wasn’t entirely sure how the S.J. Clarkson-helmed film would turn out, saying that “sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?'” She went on to call making her first superhero flick “a real learning experience, “adding that “of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I...

Sydney Sweeney’s “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut was ostensibly about promoting her role in the upcoming Neon horror film “Immaculate,” which is set to premiere at SXSW. But while the “Anyone But You” star was eager to focus on the future, she couldn’t resist making a joke about her most recent failure.
Sweeney recently starred alongside Dakota Johnson in the Spider-Man spin-off “Madame Web,” which hit theaters on Valentines Day and became one of the biggest box office flops in recent memory. As she introduced herself to the crowd in Studio 8H, she made it clear that she’s able to have a laugh at the film’s expense.
“You might have seen me in ‘Anyone But You’ or ‘Euphoria,’” Sweeney said. “You definitely did not see me in ‘Madame Web.’ But I do have a new film coming out called ‘Immaculate.’ I play a nun, so it’s perfect casting.

Sydney Sweeney’s latest monologue on Saturday Night Live proves that the stars of Madame Web are embarrassed by the film’s poor critical and commercial reception. However, debutante director S.J. Clarkson’s film has managed to crawl past the $80 million mark, which is reportedly the production budget of the film. By recouping its budget, the female-led film has now shamed another film that came out earlier this year with a star-studded cast — Argylle.
Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web has recouped its production budget
Henry Cavill’s film, produced by Apple, boasted a massive production budget of $200 million. However, its box office collection is struggling to reach even half that number. Madame Web may even cross the collection of Argylle in a few days, thus adding to its humiliation.

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web sustained a lot of negative reviews and underwhelming ratings which a lot of people think the blame would immediately fall on the director. Still, many fans believe it was not Sj Clarkson’s fault that the material was not up to par or did not entirely capture the story of Cassandra Webb.

Actress Dakota Johnson is not making headlines this time around for her role in a romantic drama or a gripping thriller. Instead, it is due to her disappointment with the cast of the recently released superhero film, Madame Web. The actress, 34, participated in extensive driving stunt training for Sony’s film, but she was not permitted to do any “crazy things” while working on the film.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Johnson was asked if she was excited to be doing her own stunts in Madame Web, helmed by the British director S. J. Clarkson. The film is based on the same-named character from Marvel Comics. Johnson plays Cassandra Webb, better known as Madame Webb, a clairvoyant with the ability to foresee future occurrences in the ‘spider world’.

This Madame Web article contains spoilers.
“With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

The recently released Madame Web has failed epically, both among general audiences and critics, and surprisingly enough, fans weren’t shocked by the film’s failure. But there was something related to the film that did end up shocking fans; something related to S.J. Clarkson, the very director who helmed the Dakota Johnson-starrer box-office disaster.

Madame Web was a huge disappointment for Marvel fans. It had an exceptional cast of actors, including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, and Emma Roberts. On top of this, the film was an entire project centered in the world of Spider-People, and the last project to do something like this, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was extremely successful.
Despite this, the film was severely criticized in every aspect. So much so, that it became one of the worst-doing films in Marvel history, even having a budget of only $80 million.

While these unfortunate predispositions may lead to the film having no chance at having any future parts, fans have come up with the perfect plot for its sequel. Interestingly enough, it completely relies on the film’s deceased villain and a character from Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Sony’s big bet on ‘Madame Web‘ didn’t quite pan out as they’d hoped. The buzz around the trailer was pretty lukewarm, and the ticket sales didn’t do much to lift spirits. But the real kicker came with the critic reviews. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 13%, it’s been a while since we’ve seen superhero flicks take such a hit.
People were actually getting refunds on their advance tickets. It’s a bit of a shocker, especially when you think about how even ‘Shazam! 2’ did better. The opening week in North America brought in just $26.2 million, which is pretty low for a Marvel character movie. And the global numbers weren’t much to celebrate either.
Sony’s had its ups and downs with Spider-Man spinoffs, but ‘Madame Web’ was supposed to be different. They had Dakota Johnson leading the charge, with a hint at a new franchise.

Sony Pictures needs to head back to the drawing board with its Marvel universe because "Madame Web" crashed and burned in every way imaginable over the weekend. The studio's latest "Spider-Man" franchise spin-off film hit theaters on Valentine's Day against "Bob Marley: One Love." Conventional wisdom would tell you that the superhero movie would easily beat the middle-of-the-road music biopic. That's not what happened and, frankly, it wasn't even close.
"Madame Web" pulled in just $26.2 million across its first six days of release, counting from Wednesday through the Monday President's Day holiday. It made just $15.3 million over the weekend, coming in second to "One Love." The biopic pulled in a surprisingly large $28.6 million over the weekend and $52 million over its first six days, including a record-breaking opening day in Jamaica. Monday Am: No surprise as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love continues to overperform now at $52M over 6-days after a better than expected Sunday of $9.45M (to originally expected $8.55M).
Monday is looking to ring in $5.5M. Current 3-day is $28.6M, 4-day is $34.1M. Some falsely guessed that coming off a record Valentine’s Day of $14M that Bob Marley: One Love would be front-loaded, ala The Color Purple which posted $18.1M on its opening Christmas Day (granted that had previews rolled into it). However, Bob Marley has a bigger appeal than that feature take of the Broadway musical; for in six days, the reggae legend biopic has already made 86% of what Color Purple finaled at ($60.5M). Overall, a great start for what will be a piece of counterprogramming as we approach Dune: Part Two on March 1.

The trailer buzz was worrisome, advance ticket sales anemic. Then last week, the critic reviews for Madame Web were posted, and they stung deepest of all — Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff received the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score (13 percent) of any major superhero film in nearly a decade.
“On Wednesday night, you could actually watch advance purchase sales declining in real time as buyers were refunding their tickets,” marvels a major theatrical chain executive. “It really says something when you’d rather have Shazam! 2 numbers.”
It marked one of the lowest starts in Hollywood history for a film based on a Marvel character. Domestic box office for the first six days in North America was just $26.2 million after opening midweek on Valentine’s Day. International tallied $25.7 million from 61 markets. Even the fan-friendly CinemaScore grade was poor (C+ — extremely low for a superhero title).

Sydney Sweeney played the role of Julia Cornwall, aka Spider-Woman, in the latest film from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Madame Web. The film received major criticism for its underwhelming plot, thinly written characters, and wooden acting. In a recent interview, Sweeney revealed that she was excited to be a part of the MCU. Fans began pitying the Euphoria actress for not knowing the difference between the Ssu and the MCU.

However, it is entirely possible that the MCU may use the character in any of the future Spider-Man movies. Fans also suggested that Sweeney should be actually given a better role in one of the MCU films, possibly as a member of the X-Men.

“It was about telling a great story. My father always used to say, ‘If you have to say something, stand up, speak up and then shut up,’” she said of her choice not to include a credits scene. “So when I got to the end credits, I felt that we’d said everything we needed to say in the film.”
“It’s up to whatever is next to take on the baton,” she added.

Sony Pictures’ recent release Madame Web is directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker and a writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim and more.
The movie is a suspense thriller that follows the story of Madame Web’s origin story in a standalone universe. Madame Web is a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and opened up to negative reviews from the critics as well as the audience. Dedicated fans of Marvel Comics mentioned how the writers of the movie do not have a single successful movie under their kitty.

Just days after its release, ‘Madame Web’ finds itself struggling to gain traction. With a meager 13% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a lackluster 54% audience score, the film is deemed “rotten” by many. Box office returns reflect this disappointment, with a reported first-day earnings of only 6 million.
Amidst this underwhelming reception, both the cast and director are engaging in damage control efforts. Dakota Johnson has publicly stated that the final product deviated significantly from her initial expectations. Notably, fans have voiced concerns over the absence of origin stories for the Spider-Women, despite their prominent presence in the trailer, fully suited and displaying superpowers.
In an interview with ComicBook, director S.J. Clarkson addressed this omission, explaining the rationale behind the decision to limit the portrayal of superpowers for the Spider-Women to dream sequences. She also hinted at how this narrative choice might influence future chapters of the ‘Madame Web’ saga.
