With Fox set to kick off its five-year, $3-billion-plus deal for NFL Thursday Night Football, Fox Sports production president John Entz and play-by-play man Joe Buck are seeing a “looser” and “more entertaining” approach take shape.
“The Thursday night package was attractive for many reasons,” Entz said during a conference call with reporters. “One thing we wanted to emphasize was consistency. The broadcast had had trouble with people finding it since it was on different networks over the years.”
In terms of tone, he added, “It seems looser. … It feels like there’s kind of a breath of fresh air that’s been put in.” Entz based that assessment on two initial runs with Fox’s team handling key production and booth duties for broadcasts carried by the NFL Network, per the contract. In the prime-time context, compared with Sunday afternoon, Buck noted, “You feel like you have to be a little more entertaining.

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will call Fox’s Thursday Night Football beginning in 2018, Fox Sports announced Monday.
The duo will call all thirteen Tnf broadcasts in the upcoming football season, the first of which will air September 13 as the Cincinnati Bengals host the Baltimore Ravens. That game and 10 more of the 13 broadcasts will air on Fox and simulcast via NFL Network and also distributed in Spanish on Fox Deportes, as well as on Amazon Prime Video.
“Since acquiring the rights to Thursday Night Football, we knew we wanted a big game feel,” said president of production and executive producer of Fox Sports John Entz. “There is no other tandem that is more synonymous with big NFL games on Fox than Joe and Troy.”

First, let us dispense with the obvious.
Yes, Super Bowl Xlviii is being played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., the first modern-era NFL championship game to be held outdoors in a cold-weather locale.
And yes, if it snows, rains, blows or ices, the people on the field and in the stands will get cold, wet and maybe even frozen. Passing games could be disrupted, and players' footing might not be great. Such is life when you hold a football game in February in the northern half of the country.
But if you're the people at Fox, which broadcasts the season-ending title game between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Feb. 2, you're also looking at this location as a tremendous opportunity. Tremendous in that you're using New York -- and all that entails -- as your backdrop, a rich canvas on which to work.

Major League baseball doesn't want to be left out of the talent-draft hysteria. The Mlb draft, which starts tonight, is getting the kind of red-carpet coverage that has turned the NFL and NBA drafts into primetime events. The Mlb Network is throwing a one-hour warm-up show, giving first-time reporter access to team execs during the draft and a bunch of other bells and whistles intended to raise the profile of baseball's draft. "It's going to be significantly different this year, no question," John Entz, an Mlb Network exec, told Sports Business News over the weekend.
