“We didn’t know what we were doing,” says Josh Schwartz, creator of The O.C. For the show’s first few episodes, the music choices were simply plucked from his own iPod. But once the now-legendary music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas came aboard, the show turned into a weekly showcase for some of the best music of the ’00s — and a key force behind the mainstream rise of a certain brand of indie-leaning rock in that decade, from Death Cab for Cutie to the Killers. It didn’t hurt that...

20 years ago, The O.C. introduced us to the magic of Chrismukkah when Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) declared: “In this house, you don't have to choose!” Although the practice of celebrating both Christmas and Hanukkah isn’t a new concept, the Fox teen drama popularized the term “Chrismukkah” to the point where it became a pop culture phenomenon, not unlike Seinfeld's Festivus. In 2004, “Chrismukkah” was included as one of Time’s “buzzwords” of the year. The following year, Grey’s Anatomy incorporated the holiday into the Season 2 episode “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” There are even books about Chrismukkah!

Earlier this month, actor Ed Westwick — most famous for portraying the Donald Trump Jr.-esque real estate scion Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl — went live on TikTok and revealed to his followers that he’s keen to do a Gossip Girl “reboot” with the original cast, or a “spinoff show.”
The allegations notwithstanding, Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage tell Rolling Stone that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about a reboot with the original cast anytime soon.
In an interview to promote the upcoming book Welcome to the O.

For a long time, Teen Dramas were my guilty pleasure. I wasn’t into the standard stuff like 90210 or Party of Five. No, I either hated those shows, or I just never saw them. My favorites were shows like My So-Called Life or Freaks and Geeks. I think it was because, much like the characters on the show, I fell in love with them. Like soap opera fans, I became invested in the character’s relationships. But, unlike previous shows, The O.C. was one of those rare shows that gave you just enough drama that it didn’t go into full-blown melodrama.
Okay, that’s a lie. It gave you A Lot of melodrama at times. But for some strange reason, the show felt sincere. While many of these teen dramas at the time felt like they were writing episodes for ratings, the O.C. just felt like they were telling good stories.

For children of the ‘90s — elder millennials, or so they call us — Kevin Williamson is a near-mythical figure. This is, after all, the man who burst onto the scene with his screenplay for 1996’s meta-horror classic Scream, followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, Halloween H20 and The Faculty. Then there was Dawson’s Creek, a coming-of-age teen drama centering a group of garrulous film geeks that birthed an entirely new genre of TV nerd (see: Seth Cohen).

Isabella Gomez, the Latina actor who charmed audiences as the high school-aged Elena Alvarez on the Netflix-turned-Pop TV reboot of “One Day at a Time,” returns to screens with “Head of the Class” on HBO Max. The new series, executive produced by Bill Lawrence alongside exec producers and writers Amy Pocha and Seth Cohen, is another reboot of a classic sitcom. This time though, Gomez is playing a young educator who wants her students to, per the logline, “focus less on grades and more on experiencing life.”
Gomez, who admits a sense of disbelief in taking on the role of the adult in the room, says she feels “lucky” to play the character of Alicia Gomez and “show people that I can also do that kind of work.”
Here, Gomez speaks with Variety about what she learned from her “One Day at a Time” co-stars and pulls back the curtain on her latest project.

Like Seth Cohen once told Summer Roberts, Rachel Bilson's allure is undeniable. I’ll admit, I went into “Promising Young Woman” in the utterly blind way that trauma victims probably shouldn’t go into anything.
My decision to rent it was inevitable after reading rave reviews on social media from a wide cross-section of colleagues, young and older, which is perhaps why I also made the mistake of watching it with my mother. The lip-sticked, candy-colored promotions allured and deceived me exactly as director Emerald Fennell intended (just as the film’s protagonist lures unconscionable culprits). I’d imagined we were in for a rom-com.
We collectively cringed in the opening scene, when Seth Cohen — rather, Jerry (Adam Brody — how brilliant was the casting of archetypal “nice guys” in these predatory roles?) escorted a seemingly blitzed Cassie (Carey Mulligan) out of the club.
We both held our breath, even as he redirected the cab to his place. I refused to meet my mother’s eyes.

The actor: It wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration to say that Adam Brody’s role on The O.C. was a “cultural reset.” With Seth Cohen, Brody introduced a new brand of affable music nerd; he was the original “softboi,” so to speak—and some young men still strongly identify with the character. But rather than relegating…...

It’s been quite a morning for Ted Lasso’s Bill Lawrence.
While at work on the Warner Bros. lot, he found out that his Apple TV+ comedy—co-created by Joe Kelly, Brendan Hunt and Jason Sudeikis—had received a pair of Golden Globe nominations. Sudeikis was recognized for his lead performance, while the show itself landed a coveted slot in the category of Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy.
Around the same time, the show was met with three Writers Guild Award nominations, for Best Comedy Series, New Series and Episodic Comedy.
In conversation with Deadline today, Lawrence said that it has been “a really cool experience” to see the show receive so much love. At the same time, though, he feels that “caring about awards” is antithetical to the very nature of Ted Lasso. “So, it feels disingenuous to make too big a deal out of all this,...

Exclusive: Watchmen actress Jolie Hoang-Rappaport is going back to school. She is the latest to join the roster of the Head of the Class reboot at HBO Max.
Created by Rich Eustis and Michael Elias, the original Head of the Class ran on ABC from 1986-91. It followed a group of gifted students at the fictional Millard Fillmore High School in Manhattan and their history teacher Charlie Moore, played by Howard Hesseman.
The reimagined series isn’t too far from the original but will modernize it and swaps gender of the teacher. It revolves around a group of overachieving high school students who meet their greatest challenge — teacher Alicia Adams, who wants them to focus less on grades and more on experiencing life. The news of Hoang-Rappaport’s casting comes after Deadline exclusively reported that One Day at a Time actor Isabella Gomez will be stepping into the role of Alicia Adams.

The 2020 back-to-school season is a particularly complicated and emotionally fraught one. Students, teachers, and parents across the country and the world have to alter their usual education routines in the interest of social distancing and public health. American high schools on television are much more consistent, comfortable places that the real ones, even when they’re being terrorized by monsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Satan himself (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), or worst of all: Samuel “Screech” Powers (Saved by the Bell). The landscape of fictional TV high schools is a rich and diverse one. But there are quite a few of them. And that raises the question: where are all these places anyway?
Here we have researched and gathered the location of every notable TV high school we can find.

A foul-mouthed basketball coach played by Jake Johnson is the star of Hoops, Netflix’s new animated comedy series from writer and producer Ben Hoffman.
Johnson, who previously worked with Hoffman on New Girl, voices Coach Ben Hopkins, a petty and bad-tempered coach who is desperate to prove himself by training his underperforming high school basketball team into champions. He’s got his work cut out for him: as shown in the series teaser, Hopkins can barely get the ball in the net himself, and not without cussing out the entire court.

Netflix is hoping for a slam dunk with “Hoops,” the streaming service’s upcoming animated basketball comedy. Netflix has unveiled a teaser trailer for the show, which will premiere its first season August 21.
Per Netflix, “Hoops” is an animated comedy sitcom that centers on a hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach (Jake Johnson) who thinks turning around his god-awful team will take him to the “big leagues” and turn his miserable life around.
Speaking of having a foul-mouth, Netflix’s teaser trailer for the series indicates that “Hoops” is clearly part of the entertainment industry’s newfound fondness for adult animated comedies — “fuck” is the trailer’s most-used word by a considerable margin. And if the one-minute teaser is any indication, “Hoops” is shaping up to be a legitimately funny affair; the video consists entirely of Johnson’s hapless character attempting to land a shot while his incredulous team wordlessly watches from nearby.
