With Peacock’s Twisted Metal adaptation getting the green light for a second season, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith and team dropped a few tidbits during an interview with NBC Insider on what to expect for season 2. That includes not only the focus on the tournament itself, but also the appearance of several more fan favorites from the video game series.
“I’m really excited,” says Smith. “We have an amazing team of writers and we’re discussing the arc of the season and what the first episode might be, looking at the big picture.” Among the characters the team is looking to introduce in the show, tournament organizer Calypso will finally be making an appearance, along with Dollface (who in Peacock’s adaptation is John Doe’s long-lost sister), Mr. Grimm, and perhaps the most challenging for the showrunners, Axel.

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. Now season 2 is moving full steam ahead, and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (who also happens to be a writer on Cobra Kai) has given Syfy Wire an update, saying the writers room has been assembled for season 2 and he feels they’re going to deliver something wild.
Smith is excited to be working with characters like Dollface, Mr. Grimm, and Axel, although working a couple of those into the grounded world established in the first season presents a challenge. As he said, “(Mr. Grimm) is my favorite and I’m excited to capture what the fans are excited about seeing,...

I think it’s pretty safe to assume that no one had exceptionally high hopes for Peacock’s take on Twisted Metal. A comedic adaptation of an over-the-top car combat franchise that hasn’t seen a new entry in over twelve years – it feels like everything was stacked against this odd little streaming project from the very start. Thankfully, the end result was a surprisingly entertaining show that managed to combine original storytelling with enough nods to the original source material to keep both fans and newcomers consistently engaged.
That being said, there’s clearly still room for improvement here, which is something that the show itself acknowledges towards the end of the experience with its tease of a more game-accurate second season. With that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six reasons why we’re excited for a second season of Twisted Metal, as while...

After a concerning lead-up to the show’s release, Sony‘s Twisted Metal is doing donuts around audience expectations! The car combat-oriented comedy series is Peacock’s “most-binged” comedy premiere, with the average account watching roughly three episodes per sitting, with some opting to knock the entire season out in one glorious shot. The Twisted Metal Peacock premiere is an outstanding sign for Sony’s future adaptations of popular gaming properties.
While NBCUniversal neglected to share the number of people tuning in for Twisted Metal, it stands to share similar success to Bel Air, The Best Man: Final Chapters, Poker Face, and Based on a True Story as one of Peacock’s top five original series. According to Nielsen, a global leader in audience insights, Twisted Metal locked and loaded 400M viewing minutes in the weekend following its July 27 premiere.

It’s one thing to step into the ring with Samoa Joe, but to confront him while he’s dressed as a clown in an ice cream truck? No thanks. Apparently, that’s pretty much how a lot of his Twisted Metal co-stars felt, as Samoa Joe has said the sheer look of Sweet Tooth put the fear right into them.
Speaking with Cbr, Samoa Joe said he eased into Sweet Tooth due to the get-up but was also helped quite a bit by those on the set of Twisted Metal. “To be quite honest, it was very easy. I mean, anytime you put on a clown mask, a leather tactical bondage harness, and polka dot pants, it has a way of thrusting you into the role whether you like it or not. The "Twisted Metal" video games were a huge favorite of millennials growing up, fulfilling the vehicular combat desires of angsty tweens hopped up on Mountain Dew and a variety of angry white boy music dominating the airwaves. Parents clutched pearls over the excessive violence and graphic ballistics, and gamers couldn't get enough of it. "Twisted Metal" was hugely popular, and the game's star, the hulking clown Needles "Sweet Tooth" Kane, became an easily identifiable figure. He drives an ice cream truck. He wears a leather daddy fetish harness. And of course, he's an evil clown built like a 1980s big hoss wrestler.
Peacock recently adapted the games into a series, turning the explosive games into a weirdly addictive post-apocalyptic action comedy. Since Sweet Tooth exists solely behind his demented clown mask, the creative team was wise to enlist comedian, actor, and prominent voice-over performer Will Arnett to give Sweet Tooth his personality.

Anthony Mackie spent the better part of his childhood playing Twisted Metal on the Playstation. Now, he’s the face of Peacock’s adaptation, which debuted Thursday — nearly two decades after the first version of the game.
Fans of Twisted Metal will know that the vehicular combat games don’t exactly tell a story. “It was just a bunch of people, a bunch of cars, who do you want to fight?” as the Marvel actor put it.
“So with the series, we were able to make that backstory and create that background to where now you’re invested in these characters. And when you go back and play the game, now you have a completely different relationship with those characters who are in the game,” he told Deadline during a recent interview.

Of all the video games to make a TV show out of, Peacock made a hell of a choice with Twisted Metal. Once a thriving franchise and synonymous with Sony’s various consoles, the series has been silent for eleven years after the ill-fated PlayStation 3 reboot. While the direction of making the show a comedic and colorful American take on Mad Max is an interesting choice, it’s not like it’s an especially easy series of games to be faithful to. With eight titles to its name and one canceled release, Twisted Metal’s continuity is as mucked up as the Halloween movies. There have been several sequels, a sequel that retconned away previous sequels, a kid-based reimagining, a reboot, and another reboot that turned out to be a stealth sequel to the original games. It’s all very confusing.

For the longest time, adapting video games into movies or television was an all but guaranteed disaster; films like "Postal," "Rampage," "Doom," and "Max Payne" were all met with widespread derision. But 2023 has provided a major turning point: Thanks to the enormous box-office success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and the massive acclaim for the HBO series "The Last of Us," video games are finally being looked at as a source for great stories.
That brings us to Peacock's "Twisted Metal." I've been playing video games my whole life, and if you were to ask me what games would make a great television series, "Twisted Metal" would be at the bottom of my list -- if it even appeared at all. That's not because they're bad games mind you, but they are significantly lacking any significant story. There's a pretense of one, but it's a franchise all about driving...

With its rave reviews, three-month window of cultural supremacy and 24 Emmy nominations, HBO’s The Last of Us gave all subsequent game-to-screen translations an exhilarating new freedom. It’s no longer necessary for an adaptation to bear the weight of an entire genre’s credibility. “Greatness” has been achieved and it’s now fully acceptable for a video game adaptation to simply be “decent.”
Huzzah!
Peacock’s new series based on the venerable and versatile Twisted Metal franchise is — and I mean this generally as a compliment — quite decent. Both as colorful and as deep as a shimmering oil slick on a sweltering stretch of abandoned blacktop, Twisted Metal lacks the budget and ingenuity to consistently live up to the game’s sense of unrelenting mayhem. But its limitations make room for a solid character-based story to develop around stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz.

Five minutes into Peacock’s new horror comedy series “Twisted Metal,” it’s evident that the main character of John Doe – an amnesiac driver transporting goods across a war-torn nation – was written more as a vehicle for Anthony Mackie than for the gamers that sustained the original Sony Playstation franchise that inspired it.
Originally a wildly popular 1995 vehicular combat battle game, “Twisted Metal” has had over ten iterations and is the longest-running original title on the platform. The Peacock series is a live-action comedic adaptation created by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (“Cobra Kai”).
Those looking for a faithful video game adaptation should hold their applause until the end. Unlike recent shows like “The Last of Us” or “Halo,” the source material for this show is too convoluted to be adapted directly. However, those looking for sequences of vehicular-related carnage should be pleased.

The "Twisted Metal" video games were truly unique for their era, bringing players into brutal vehicular combat with a variety of colorful characters to choose from. There wasn't ever particularly great continuity between the games, so each had its own unique story and reason for the Twisted Metal competition, but many of the characters returned again and again, allowing fans of the franchise to really develop their favorites. Of all of the characters in the games, from motorcycle-riding reaper Mr. Grimm to tank-driving serial killer Kane to Dragula-driving musician Rob Zombie, perhaps the most famous is the killer clown Sweet Tooth, who drives a tricked-out ice cream truck.
The upcoming "Twisted Metal" live-action series on Peacock looks like it's just as wild as its video game counterparts, and that means they needed a Sweet Tooth to match. The creepy killer clown is portrayed physically by wrestler Samoa Joe, with...

When Mackie signed on to produce and star in Peacock’s TV adaptation of the game, he knew it would be a chance to pay homage to an era that meant a lot to him. “I was formed and defined by the ‘90s,...

John Doe (Anthony Mackie) is hoping for a better life, but that’s much easier said than done, as you can see in the trailer for Twisted Metal (dropping on Peacock on July 27). “Twenty years ago, the world fell to s**t. Cities put up walls to protect themselves and threw the criminals out so they could fight over what was left. But there are humble motherf**kers like me delivering cargo from one walled city to another,” John explains. “And that’s where the cars and guns come in.” Raven (Neve Campbell), in New San Francisco, hires John. “Pick up a package, bring it back. I could make your every wish come true. So John, what do wish for?” she asks … and she can do better than his answer. The "Twisted Metal" video game series doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would work as a live-action TV show, but the folks over at Peacock gave it a shot and the first teaser trailer is here and ... it actually doesn't look bad! In fact, it looks like they're leaning hard into the nostalgia aspect of things, with a focus on the turn of the millennium. That's kind of genius, really, as the game series was at its peak around that era, with "Twisted Metal 4" releasing in 1999 and the seminal "Twisted Metal Black" releasing in 2001, giving an entire generation of kids and teens a love for the rowdy road-rage of these combat car games. I remember playing "Twisted Metal 4" in my friend's basement after school, banging our heads to the heavy metal soundtrack and laughing at the ridiculous characters, and somehow this trailer has captured that exact energy. With...

Sweet Tooth Season 2 Trailer: Hybrids And Humans Still Can't Get Along In Netflix's DC Comics Series
If there's anything that the recent premiere of "The Last of Us" showed us, it's that there's still plenty of juice to wring out of the post-apocalyptic genre. The HBO show took its cues from the acclaimed video game series to give us another "Lone Wolf and Cub" story about a grizzled old man and the young ward he'll stop at nothing to protect. "Sweet Tooth," on the other hand, resides at the other end of the spectrum. Focusing on a group of kids who just happen to be, well, mutant hybrids, the Netflix series is adapted from the DC Comics series written and drawn by Jeff Lemire. Season 1 bowed in 2021 to exceptionally strong reviews and even a bevy of Emmy nominations, of which it won two: for Outstanding Supporting Performance and Outstanding Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.

A title like Cocaine Bear speaks for itself. It sums up the premise, but perhaps more importantly, it suggests an outrageous tone with energy to match. While drawing from the 1985 true crime account that left cocaine scattered across the wilderness and both a bear and the drug smuggler responsible dead, Cocaine Bear finds highly entertaining ways to fill in those story gaps with glorious violence, humor, and an incisive depiction of humanity at its best and worst.
Director Elizabeth Banks and screenwriter Jimmy Warden use the historic news event as a launching point for this raucous tale. After an opening preamble introducing the 500-pound apex predator to large amounts of cocaine and a drug-induced lethal rage, Cocaine Bear assembles its robust ensemble cast. The massive shipment of lost cocaine leaves kingpin Syd (Ray Liotta) desperate to retrieve the merch, so he sends his right-hand man Daveed (O’Shea Jackson) and son...

Production on Season one of Peacock’s upcoming TV adaptation of Twisted Metal is in the books. The series’ writer and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith announced via Twitter earlier this week (along with a picture of an ice sculpture of the series’ logo) that production on the first season had completed filming.
Smith elaborated in subsequent tweets, saying that the cast and crew for production on Twisted Metal “was something special.” This was in spite of typical production issues such as “lightning delays, extreme heat, and cars that wouldn’t do as they’re told”.
The series now heads to post-production, which will no doubt involve adding flames to Sweet Tooth’s head. Jonathan likened the last day of shooting to the last day of summer camp, with “lots of laughs, a few tears, and ice cream being handed out the back of Sweet Tooth’s truck.”
