“I’m the one in the white hat,” Norman Lear announces as he and his producing partner, Brent Miller, several decades his junior, appear in Zoom boxes in late August.
At 100, the “newly minted centurion,” as he proudly describes himself, still appreciates a laugh. After all, the white hat has been the signature of Lear’s aesthetic for the vast majority of his career — which, at one point, included having seven series on the air and a weekly audience of more than 120 million. A sitcom savant, as Lear has been dubbed over the years, he’s responsible for such barrier-breaking, cultural behemoths as All in the Family, Good Times, Maude and The Jeffersons.

Laverne Cox Comedy Series ‘Clean Slate’ Gets Green Light at Amazon Freevee With Producer Norman Lear
Amazon Freevee has given the green light to comedy series “Clean Slate,” written by George Wallace, and Laverne Cox.
Cox and Wallace also star in the series, which hails from Sony Pictures Television and Norman Lear’s Act III Productions. Dan Ewen also helped write the story of the show and wrote the script for its pilot.
Here’s a logline for the series:
Old school and outspoken car wash owner, Henry (Wallace), is thrilled his estranged child is finally returning home to Alabama after 17 years. However, Henry has a lot of soul searching to do when the child he thought was a son returns as the determined, proud, trans woman, Desiree (Cox).
“Clean Slate” has been in development at Amazon Freevee for over a year after moving from NBCUniversal’s development slate in early 2021. That’s after NBCU held onto the project for about a year, as well.

He may have turned 100 in July, but Norman Lear isn’t about to disappear from our screens. There is an upcoming special this month about the legendary TV creator’s life. And now comes news of a brand new show. Amazon Freevee has ordered Clean Slate, from his Act III Productions and Sony Pictures Television and starring George Wallace and Laverne Cox, to series. Wallace plays old school and outspoken car wash owner, Henry, who is thrilled his estranged child is finally returning home to Alabama after 17 years. However, Henry has a lot of soul searching to do when the child he thought was a son returns as the determined, proud, trans woman, Desiree (Cox). Wallace, Cox, and Dan Ewan, who will serve as executive producer and writer, came up with the story. Cox will executive produce, while Wallace will produce, as will Paul Hilepo. Lear will executive produce with his producing partner Brent Miller.

Amazon Freevee has picked up to series the Laverne Cox-George Wallace comedy Clean Slate, from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions and Sony Pictures Television, where the company is based. This is a formal order for the half-hour project, starring Cox and Wallace, which I hear was unofficially made around Lear’s 100th birthday on July 27.
The green light brings to a successful conclusion Clean Slate’s journey’s to the screen. The comedy was initially announced as part of NBCUniversal’s development slate in January 2020, and moved to Amazon Freevee (then-IMDb TV) for development in early 2021.

Amazon Freevee has given the greenlight to “Clean Slate,” a new comedy from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace. The original comedy has been in development at Freevee since February 2021, back when the ad-supported streamer was known as IMDb TV.
“Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox). There’s no word yet on an episodic order, when the series might shoot or an estimated premiere date.
Ewen serves as executive producer and writer on “Clean Slate,” and he has story credit along with Cox and Wallace. Cox will also serve as an executive producer on the show, while Wallace is a producer.

In the year of the coronavirus pandemic, many TV producers have had to get creative, to figure out how to keep their shows on the air, even as production across the world was shut down.
During the last seven months of lockdown, the visionaries behind two-live action sitcoms—ABC/ABC Signature’s Black-ish and Pop/Sony Pictures TV’s One Day at a Time—wound up taking the same tack to do just that, presenting animated episodes of their shows for the first time. The animated Black-ish episode airs this Sunday, Oct. 4, as part of an hourlong special.
For the producers, the idea in going animated was to tide over fans during the production shutdown, keeping each series in the cultural conversation, as they worked to pull together another full, live-action season. “Hustlers gotta hustle,” says One Day at a Time co-creator/exec producer/co-showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett, “and we...

Forty-five years after Norman Lear’s One Day at a Time premiered on CBS, the Once Day at a Time reboot is debuting there, marking Lear’s return to the network where he was a staple in the 1970s.
The Season 4 broadcast run, which kicks off October 5 with back-to-back episodes over three weeks, was part of the deal ViacomCBS sibling Pop TV made last year to rescue the praised family sitcom after its cancellation by Netflix. Odaat, a reimagining of the classic Lear sitcom with a Latino family, was going to be a likely summer fare for the broadcast network, but the pandemic-related production shutdown delayed the 2020-21 broadcast series and the comedy found its way to the fall schedule. (The timing proved fortuitous as star Justina Machado has been bringing attention to the comedy series’ upcoming CBS run with her strong showing on Dancing With the Stars.)

Watching “Star Trek” as a child sent a message to a young Dr. Mae Jemison that she could be an astronaut. Jemison, whose 1992 expedition on the space shuttle Endeavour made her the first black woman in the world to travel into space, has loved science ever since she was little. And this show made her passion about it — her parents were also scientists — just that much cooler. “Star Trek” was fiction but the color of Nyota Uhura’s (played by actress Nichelle Nichols) skin looked just like Jemison’s and that was very real.
“‘Star Trek’ showed us a future that was viable after we made it through the foolishness of the 1960s and included all the people on Earth,” Jemison says. “And it showed me and other kids like me a very hopeful future where we had evolved to get rid of some of our petty differences.”

This is it: “One Day at a Time” will move to Pop TV without its catchy theme song. Pop icon Gloria Estefan recorded the updated, Cuban-flavored take on the “One Day at a Time” theme for the remake on Netflix, and it opened the show’s first three seasons.
But in moving to commercial TV, where episodes must fit a 21-minute window, something had to go — and that meant trimming the opening credits down to a simple title card.

In May of this year, ABC aired a special event called “Live in Front of a Studio Audience.” Focusing on the iconic sitcom work of one Mr. Norman Lear, the live event enlisted over a dozen notable actors to perform episodes of two of his hit shows, “All in the Family” — the episode “Henry’s Farewell” — and “The Jeffersons” — the episode “A Friend in Need.” Hosted by Lear and Jimmy Kimmel, and directed by 10-time Emmy Award winner James Burrows, the 90-minute prime-time event even saw Marla Gibbs reprise her role as the Jeffersons’ wise-cracking maid Florence Johnston.
Tonight, “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” returns for another round of live Norman Lear-centric re-creation, this time with an all-new cast performing an episode of “All in the Family,” alongside a performance of an episode of “Good Times.”

Speaking to the studio audience on Tuesday night at a dress rehearsal for this week’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” special, executive producer Jimmy Kimmel offered a quick disclaimer about how different sitcoms were back in the 1970s — in particular, Norman Lear comedies.
Lear’s shows weren’t afraid to tackle messy social, political and cultural topics. To 2019 ears, some of those things may be offensive — particularly when they come out of Archie Bunker’s mouth. “Shows were different in the 70s,” Kimmel told the crowd. “They are very vanilla now. Back then, they were chocolate.”
That’s part of the draw of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” which returns for a second installment on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Et on ABC. Lear’s 1970s-era sitcoms were known for mixing comedy with an honest look at the issues that people face — the kind of things...

A screening of the emotional One Day at a Time episode where Lydia (Rita Moreno) is in a coma after a stroke and the Alvarez family, one by one, share tearjerking moments with her as they wait for her to wake up kicked off the panel session. Afterward, as the Atx Television Festival audience dried their tears, Brooklyn Nine-Nine star and Odaat guest star and panel moderator Melissa Fumero welcomed stars Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Stephen Tobolowsky, and co-creator/executive producer Mike Royce and executive producer Brent Miller (and a brief guest video appearance from Isabella Gomez) to talk about the show in front of a packed house at the State Theater.
“It’s rare to make an audience think you’re going to kill off a character…so to get that real audience reaction was great!” said Royce of the episode.
Fumero didn’t waste any time and addressed the elephant in the room.

When Marla Gibbs returned to set for ABC’s live remake of Norman Lear’s “The Jeffersons” and “All In the Family,” she never even looked at a script — she remembered her lines from playing Florence Johnston in the seminal sitcom nearly 40 years ago.
“When something changes your life, you never forget it,” Gibbs said during Saturday’s Fyc event held at Disney Studios in Burbank. “I never forgot the show, never forgot the lines, never forgot the cast and their lines, because everything about that show was very important to me.”
The actress’s cameo — which was kept secret until the special’s premiere — featured one particular line that Gibbs remembered was a smash during its original run. In it, Florence cracks a joke about three black women living in the same building, saying “How come we overcame and nobody told me?” which Gibbs said was met with the...

Netflix has canceled its “One Day at a Time” reboot after three seasons, the streamer announced on Wednesday.
Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, the show had been on the bubble for renewal, becoming the subject of a campaign for renewal on social media in recent months. Co-creator and co-showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett called on fans last month to stream the show and express their desire for a fourth season.
However, Netflix said Wednesday that the Norman Lear sitcom’s viewership numbers did not justify a fourth season. “The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season,” the streamer said in a statement.
