House Speaker Mike Johnson gave a speech about the antisemitism present at Columbia University, which was met with boos and heckling from pro-Palestinian protesters in the crowd.
Johnson delivered a stern message on the university’s campus for school administrators and protesters after days of anti-war demonstrations, arrests and campus closures at colleges across the United States.
A spokesperson from Johnson’s office stated that Johnson wanted to speak to Columbia students because he believed that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) had not done enough to keep them safe.
“Today, I’m here to proclaim, for all those who gnash their teeth and demand to wipe the state of Israel off the map and attack our innocent Jewish students, this simple truth: neither Israel nor these Jewish students on this campus – this campus will stand alone,” the House speaker declared during his speech.

The VMAs are headed home — well, close enough — to celebrate its 40th anniversary: After two years on the other side of the Hudson River, MTV’s flagship awards show will return to New York, taking place Sept. 10 at the Ubs Arena in Elmont, just outside of New York City.
The Video Music Awards debuted in 1984 at Radio City Music Hall. While that storied NYC venue has hosted the show numerous times over the decades, it hasn’t been held there since 2018.

Self-avowed pro-First Amendment, anti-government repression Senators Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) are demanding President Joe Biden unleash the full force of the state’s National Guard to suppress pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia University.
“If [New York City Mayor] Eric Adams won’t send the NYPD and [New York Governor] Kathy Hochul won’t send the National Guard, Joe Biden has a duty to take charge and break up these mobs,” Cotton wrote Monday on X, formerly Twitter, describing the protests as “nascent pogroms” against Jews — invoking the term used to describe historic massacres against Jewish communities.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D), once known as a progressive, has been taking more centrist positions lately. In a new interview, he declared, “I am not woke.”
When questioned about squatters’ rights, the senator told The New York Post, “Squatters have no rights. How can you even pretend that this is anything other than you’re just breaking the law?”
Squatters occupy a property they do not own or have a legal right to live on. Though trespassing is illegal, squatting and squatters’ rights have been an ongoing debate for politicians and homeowners.
Fetterman was “horrified” when he read an article about a New York City couple sued by squatters who unlawfully moved into their duplex priced at $930,000.
“It’s wild that if you go away on a long trip, for 30 days, and someone breaks into your home, and suddenly they have rights,” Fetterman said. “This is crazy. Like if somebody stole your car,...

Actor Michael Stuhlbarg, known for his role in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, was attacked by a homeless man in New York City’s Central Park on Sunday.
Stuhlbarg, 55, was reportedly taking a walk in Central Park at 7:45 p.m. when 27-year-old Xavier Israel struck Stuhlbarg in the head. Stuhlbarg chased down Israel, and the New York Police Department then apprehended and took into custody.
“A preliminary investigation determined a 27-year-old male threw a rock striking the victim in the back of the neck, causing minor injuries,” the NYPD said in a statement.

On Thursday, former President Donald Trump and his team spent $200 at the All American Hamburger Drive-In in Long Island, New York.
The former President made the stop on his way back from visiting the wake of fallen NYPD officer Jonathan Diller in Massapequa. According to Richard Vultaggio, manager of All American, Trump and his team ordered 18 “double double” cheeseburgers, 10 hot dogs, two quarter-pounder hamburgers, 20 fries and 10 onion rings.
Vultaggio also said Trump left a generous cash tip for the establishment. In light of Officer Diller’s death, the manager said customers were inspired to pay for police officers who were dining at the time.
“The community really came together,” Vultaggio told the New York Post.
Restaurant staff were able to prepare the meal in about 10 minutes.
Open since 1963, All America is known for its value meals with a burger, milkshake and french fries only costing $7. Trump was said to have enjoyed his meal.

New York is looking to help film and TV get back up and running after the strikes.
Governor Kathy Hochul has directed state agencies to fast-track the process for film and TV productions to receive permit approvals following SAG-AFTRA ratifying its new deal yesterday.

She has called for expediting permits, keeping fees and direct personnel costs transparent, maintaining an industry point of contact within the agency to handle production requests, and ensuring the agency maintains a person or team to act as a liaison to expedite permits, clearances and the provision services.

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) may be considering a run for New York City mayor as the federal investigation into Mayor Eric Adams (D) continues.
Cuomo resigned more than two years ago due to allegations of sexual harassment and claims that his administration lied about the number of Covid-related deaths in nursing homes.
According to sources from his inner circle, Cuomo is currently trying to gauge his chances at a potential mayoral bid. A new poll began circulating last week that measures how voters feel about the former governor.
Questions from the poll included whether Cuomo should apologize for his alleged behavior toward women, and if voters believed he would be competitive against Gov. Kathy Hochul and state Attorney General Letitia James in a hypothetical Democratic primary.

Updated with more details: New York City Mayor Eric Adams says law enforcement officials have determined no “nexus” between New York City and the incident at the Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge border crossing, and that the city will make “no additional enhancements” to security measures for tomorrow’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade beyond what was already planned.
Adams made the comment during the annual press briefing about security plans for the the parade. He said officials will continue to “monitor all the chatter” that’s taking place in the lead-up to the event, but that no connection has been found between New York City and the fiery vehicle explosion upstate.
New York Police Commission Edward Caban added that increased security measures were already in place for the Thursday event, expected to draw more than 3.5 million onlookers. The city, he said, has “been on heightened alert since October 7.”

Two people died and a Border Patrol officer was injured in the incident, according to two U.S. law enforcement officials, per the New York Times.

On Friday, the Republican chairman of the bipartisan House Ethics Committee introduced a resolution to expel Rep. George Santos (R-New York) from Congress.
The committee’s report, released on Thursday afternoon, documented multiple violations of House rules and substantial evidence of campaign fraud.
The committee’s chairman, Rep. Michael Guest (R-Mississippi), introduced the resolution and set the stage for a significant vote after the Thanksgiving break. If successful, this would make Santos only the sixth representative to be expelled in the history of the chamber.
In a statement that accompanied his five-page resolution, Guest emphasized that the evidence uncovered in the Ethics Committee’s investigative subcommittee inquiry provided more than enough grounds for punishment.
Santos has faced previous attempts at expulsion after reports exposed his fabricated life story. Federal prosecutors charged him with 23 felonies.

The tentative agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP has the support of a major power player: President Joe Biden.
Biden weighed in on the agreement in a statement Thursday, hailing the deal as one that “allows our entertainment industry to continue telling the stories of America.”
“Collective bargaining works,” Biden said in the statement. “I applaud SAG-AFTRA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for working together in good faith towards an agreement that allows our entertainment industry to continue telling the stories of America. When both sides come to the table to negotiate in earnest they can make businesses stronger and allow workers to secure pay and benefits that help them raise families and retire with dignity. Over the last three years, workers have won historic victories that ensure record pay, record benefits, and an economy that grows from the middle out and bottom up. SAG-AFTRA members will...

It seems you can’t aim a camera in New York or New Jersey these days without seeing a studio space that’s brand new, under construction or in the works.
Did you miss the Oct. 24 groundbreaking ceremony for the $350 million Sunset Pier 94 Studios, Manhattan’s first purpose-built studio campus with six soundstages totaling 85,000 square feet, opening in midtown in late 2025? No worries — there’s another on Nov. 15 for East End Studios’ $280 million Sunnyside Campus in Queens, with four stages totaling 91,250 square feet, set to be open in early 2025.
“Having an opportunity to build in Manhattan is like finding Bigfoot — a very unique situation,” says Sunset Studios head of global studios and production services Jeff Stotland. “We were fortunate to be able to partner up with Vornado [Realty Trust] because they had the ground lease on the piers.” The other backers are Hudson Pacific Properties, Blackstone and the New York City Economic Development Corp.

SAG-AFTRA has canceled pickets in New York and Los Angeles on Friday due to “potential safety concerns that are unrelated to our ongoing strike,” the guild announced Thursday night.
“Stay safe and see you on the picket lines next week,” said the statement from SAG-AFTRA. The AMPTP broke off talks with the AMPTP on Wednesday after the two sides failed to come to a deal. The AMPTP said talks had been suspended because the differences between the sides was “too great” and that “conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.”
Hamas has called for worldwide pro-Palestine demonstrations on Friday. New York city Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul said at a press conference Thursday that there are “no credible or specific threats” against the city, NBC reported.

The show must go on! New York Film Festival opened its 61st edition with “May December” as planned, despite a massive rainstorm that’s left streets and subways flooded across the five boroughs.
“Thank you all for braving the weather and making it here tonight,” director Todd Haynes told the mostly full theater. “We didn’t know what to expect.”

Despite heavy rains which have closed some New York City subway lines, schools and movie theaters — including Alamo Drafthouse locations — the New York Film Festival plans to move forward with its opening night screening of Netflix’s “May December” on Friday.
The soapy drama is scheduled for a 6 p.m. showing at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall to kick off the 61st annual festival, followed by a second showing at 9 p.m. Filmmaker Todd Haynes is scheduled to participate in a post-screening Q&a, but stars Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore are not expected to attend due to the ongoing actors strike. Alamo Drafthouse is closing its New York City locations due to a rainstorm that’s left streets and subways flooded across the five boroughs.
The theater chain said its venues in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island “will be closed until further notice.” On social media, the company said, “Please everyone stay dry & stay safe, and we hope to have you back at the movies very soon.”
Rain has blanketed the tri-state region throughout much of the week, but it intensified significantly on Friday, making the city and its surrounding area difficult to navigate and bringing traffic to a standstill. As much as 1 to 2 inches of rain was falling every hour, prompting New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency and to urge people to stay off of the roads. On Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter) and other platforms, users shared images of water-logged parts of Manhattan and the outer boroughs.

President Joe Biden on Monday released a statement applauding the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for reaching a tentative deal Sunday night, 146 days after the writers began striking.
“I applaud the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for reaching a tentative agreement that will allow writers to return to the important work of telling the stories of our nation, our world — and of all of us,” he said. “This agreement, including assurances related to artificial intelligence, did not come easily. But its formation is a testament to the power of collective bargaining. There simply is no substitute for employers and employees coming together to negotiate in good faith toward an agreement that makes a business stronger and secures the pay, benefits and dignity that workers deserve. Gavin Newsom said in an interview today that he has been “deeply involved with talking” to both sides of the long-running Writers Guild strike and “we’re going to be meeting again later this week.”
In an exclusive sit-down with Dana Bash, clips of which aired on CNN, the California governor responded to her question by saying he hasn’t been out on the picket line — as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul briefly was last month — but said he’s in “a different position.”
When she asked why, he continued: “[I’m] trying to be constructive on both sides, to utilize the formal authority I have as governor, the convening capacity I have as governor, the moral authority I can bring into the conversation to try to get everybody to the table.
Newsom added: “I’m encouraged by the conversations over this last weekend. I’m not going to overstate that, and...

The Disney-Spectrum carriage dispute has hit the state houses in New York and North Carolina.
On Friday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged Charter Spectrum and The Walt Disney Co. to “resolve this dispute as soon as possible,” and authorized New York’s Department of Public Service to secure refunds for the state’s 1.5 million or so TV customers impacted by the impasse.
“It’s simple: if you pay your cable bill, you deserve to get the services you pay for,” Hochul said in a statement Friday. “An ongoing corporate dispute is forcing customers to miss some of the highest profile televised events of the year – the least these companies can do is provide a refund. Disney and Charter must continue negotiating in good faith to ensure affordability and consumer choice. I also urge Disney to continue providing its programming under the terms of the prior agreement while negotiations continue.

This is Day 128 of the WGA strike and Day 55 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul paid a surprise visit to striking writers and actors outside Netflix offices in Manhattan on Wednesday, making good on what one union officer said was a “very, very last-minute” decision to briefly join the picket line and meet strike leaders.
In an appearance lasting about 10 minutes that caught most picketers and passersby off-guard, the state’s top elected official exchanged hugs and handshakes with WGA and SAG-AFTRA officers, paused for photos and, protest sign in hand, waded into the march for a couple of laps — flanked by aides, security and visibly delighted union figures including SAG-AFTRA president Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
Hochul didn’t address the rally, but as she readied to leave, she spoke to a small circle of union leaders — all of them surrounded by onlookers — and encouraged the strikers to “stay strong.

The number of filming permits issued by New York City declined in June from previous months and fell sharply from a year ago amid a WGA strike and continued uncertainty over the status of SAG-AFTRA. The actors’ contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expired June 30 with no deal but the two sides agreeing to extend talks through June 12 — at 11:59 pm Pt.
With an industry on edge and much at stake, some 471 permits were issued for 184 projects in June, down from 549 permits for 188 projects in May, according to data provided by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. Permits issued in June of 2022 were 834 for 254 projects — so a drop of well over 40% from a year ago.

The number of filming permits issued by New York City fell sharply in May from previous months, and from the year earlier amid a WGA strike and uncertainty over contracts for other guilds.
Some 549 permits were issued for 188 projects last month, according to data from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. That was down from 662 permits for 187 projects in April, and 679 permits for 135 projects in March across the five boroughs. A year ago, in May of 2022, Mome issued 801 shooting permits for 227 projects.
In a 2021 economic impact report, Mome said filmed entertainment supported about 185,000 jobs, $18 billion in wages and nearly $82 billion in total economic output in 2019. That was pre-Covid, the industry has been clawing its way out.
Talks with the WGA have been stalled since writers went on strike in early May. SAG-AFTRA is negotiating. The DGA signed a deal with the AMPTP and has sent it out for members to ratify.

More than 50 Democratic members of the New York state legislature, reminding the AMPTP that companies it represents are the beneficiaries of “hundreds of millions of dollars in tax credits” every year, are calling on the studios to return to the bargaining table with the Writers Guild and make a deal to end the month-long strike.
And by “relatedly” tying the tax credits to “good faith” bargaining, as they wrote in one of the letters delivered this morning to AMPTP President Carol Lombardini, the lawmakers appear to be implying that they’ll take the outcome of the strike into consideration when weighing future funding of the incentives program.
The state’s film incentives program was expanded from $400 million a year to $700 million in the state’s new $229 billion budget that was approved by the legislature in April and signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on May 3.

Government officials clashed over their responses to the killing of Jordan Neely, a homeless man seemingly having a mental health crisis on the New York subway. On Monday afternoon, Neely, 30, was reportedly yelling and acting erratically on an F train in Manhattan, when a fellow passenger put him in a chokehold, killing him. Part of the incident was captured on video, and although the person who killed him is visible in the clip, he has not been publicly named. News outlets, citing police, have said he is a 24-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

New York lawmakers finally signed off on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s state budget including significant sweeteners for film and TV production in a package that now runs through 2034 — the day after the WGA went on strike, ushering in a period of grave uncertainty for the entertainment industry.
The writers strike is attracting headlines and attention with ripple effects already spreading across media and entertainment, including production. Hundreds of writers joined the guild’s first picket line yesterday in midtown Manhattan outside of a presentation by NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service. Other action is planned over the next few weeks after the WGA’s three-year contract with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) expired Monday night without a new deal in place, and the sides seemingly far apart.
