Pharrell Williams has always done things differently in his music and his fashion, so why would his movie be different?
The singer-producer-designer is doing a biopic about his life. Focus Features just released the trailer for it. But it’s not your average musician biopic of the kind “Walk Hard” parodied. No, Williams is telling his life story through Legos. The movie is called “Piece by Piece,” but a more descriptive title would be “The Lego Pharrell Movie.”
The film follows Williams’ artistic journey, from growing up in Virginia Beach to the peak of the music industry, but tells it in an unconventional way, with impressionistic animation that combines psychedelia and Legos. The film is directed by Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville in his feature debut.
Williams and Neville hope the film resonates not just with fans of Williams’ music, but anyone seeking inspiration. “We wanted it...

Lawyers who represent Pink filed legal paperwork against Pharrell Williams on Thursday, claiming he should not be allowed to register a trademark for his P.Inc. business since it’s too much like, well, “Pink.” The singer, whose real name is Alecia Moore, applied for the “Pink” trademark in 1999 and officially registered it two years later, according to the paperwork which her lawyers filed on behalf of her Lefty Paw Print, LLC business.
“[Williams’] P.Inc Mark is similar to the Pink Marks in sight, sound, meaning and commercial impression,” the filing claims.

In his trademark application, Williams said he intended to use “P.Inc” for “promotional marketing services in the field of music.”
Aside from P!Nk, Victoria’s Secret has also filed opposition to Williams’ trademark, saying it was “highly similar” to the fashion brand’s own Pink line.

Chad Hugo accused his longtime friend and production partner Pharrell Williams of “fraudulently” trying to gain sole control over the trademarks tied to their production and songwriting work as the Neptunes.
As Billboard reports, Hugo’s lawyer filed a legal action in a federal tribunal last week accusing Pharrell and his company, Pw IP Holdings LLC, of trying to register three separate trademarks for the Neptunes without involving Hugo — an alleged violation of the duo’s longstanding agreement to share everything equally.

It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.
Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. Phoenix are keeping their collaboration kick going with a remix of their Alpha Zulu cut “All Eyes on Me” that features unlikely guest Pusha T. Check out the track below.
In addition to Pusha’s verses, the “All Eyes on Me” remix features vocals from Benee and production from Chad Hugo. The band shared their emphatic (and very French) gratitude in a press release: “A huge thank you to le Roi Pusha-t — most played artist in our backstage; to Chad Hugo, who always showed up when we were playing in Virginia, it’s about time we worked together! And to Benee, who worked at light speed to make this happen and added some magic. Merci!!!”

Bad Bunny leads the 2022 Latin Grammy Award nominations with 10 bids including Album of the Year (“Un Verano Sin Ti“) and Record of the Year (“Ojitos Lindos”), but can he finally win top honors from the academy? Scroll down for the complete list of contenders in all categories.
SEEBillboard charts: Number-one albums of 2022
The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.

Right from the start, In Search of… stood out. I discovered N.E.R.D.’s 2002 debut at a Best Buy on the rim of Houston’s I-10 loop, sitting at the front of the store on a blue kiosk marked 6.99. I was a first-year high school English teacher, struggling to pull together all the things expected of me. Lyrics from two songs on Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance were updated as a result of discussions on social media. A verse on “Heated” was altered after activists noted it contained language that has been described as ableist. Then, the singer Kelis shared a series of Instagram posts expressing frustration that her hit “Milkshake” was sampled on the album without her knowledge, describing it as “theft.” Both instances raise questions about the increasing malleability of music as a digital product.
Already, albums from major musicians are often updated with deluxe editions featuring added songs.

Beyoncé is continuing to respond to feedback: the singer removed the "Milkshake" riff interpolated on "Energy," off her new "Renaissance" album, following complaints from the song's original performer, Kelis. In a series of videos leading up to this decision, Kelis said she was not previously notified about the sample and expressed her frustrations with music-industry contracts, issues of ownership, and her splintered relationship with former collaborators Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes.
As it currently stands, the sample can no longer be heard on streaming platforms, and Williams and Hugo have been removed from the song credits available on Beyoncé's website. This also comes shortly after Beyoncé scrapped an ableist slur, the word "spaz," from the song "Heated."
The issue first began on July 25, days before the release of "Renaissance," when fans got hold of a list of the artists sampled on the album. A Kelis fan page shared said list,...

Exclusive: Thirteen-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams has signed on to produce the Mikey Alfred-directed drama North Hollywood, which is billed as being the first movie ever about becoming a pro skateboarder.
The film was submitted to Sundance but was rejected. Instead of letting that stop everyone involved, the filmmakers decided to hold their own buyers screening, which is set for Thursday in Los Angeles. They posted that news on Instagram and are generating great buzz (see below).
Williams will produce with Mimi Valdés, Malcolm Washington, Kevin Turen, Harrison Kreiss, and Carmen Cuba. North Hollywood stars Ryder McLaughlin, Aramis Hudson, Nico Hiraga, Miranda Cosgrove, Angus Cloud and Vince Vaughn.
Williams has produced some notable movies including Rick Famuyiwa’s Sundance and Cannes feature Dope; 20th Century Fox’s $236M-grossing Hidden Figures, for which Williams received an Oscar Best Picture nomination; and the 2017 biopic Roxanne, Roxanne, about...

On January 16 the Songwriters Hall of Fame announced its list of artists being inducted for 2020: Mariah Carey, Eurythmics, The Isley Brothers, Steve Miller, The Neptunes, Rick Nowels and William “Mickey” Stevenson. The 51st annual induction ceremony will take place on June 11 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.
The announcement of Carey’s induction comes just a couple of weeks after “All I Want for Christmas is You” became her 19th number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, extending her record for solo artists — only The Beatles have more number-ones, as they amassed 20 over the course of their careers. Carey’s achievement is even more impressive when you consider that she co-wrote 18 of those hits. The only one she didn’t have a hand in composing was “I’ll Be There,” her cover of a Jackson 5 hit.

Pharrell reflects on losing the “Blurred Lines” copyright trial — and disagreeing with the outcome — in a new interview with Rick Rubin for GQ.
In a lengthy legal battle that concluded in 2018, a judge ruled that Pharrell, the song’s producer/co-writer, and singer/co-writer Robin Thicke would have to pay just shy of $5 million to the family of late singer Marvin Gaye over similarities between Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Gaye’s 1977 song “Got to Give It Up.” But in the GQ video segment, Pharrell maintains that the two tracks only share a “feeling,...

Filmmakers and studios are still scrambling to complete their holiday releases, and not all of the songs you’ll be hearing about during awards season are set. But at least a dozen tunes are in contention for that all-important Oscar shortlist to be revealed Dec. 16.
Although the new song Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote for “Cats” is under wraps, it’s already looming large. Swift “really has understood the central message [of ‘Cats’] in the “very sophisticated lyric” she wrote for “Beautiful Ghosts,” Lloyd Webber tells Variety, “and it’s entirely written for the dramatic situation.” It first appears sung by lead actress Francesca Hayward, later in a reprise by Judi Dench, and finally over the end credits by Swift herself.
Five contenders are from Disney. Topping that list is “Into the Unknown,” another showcase for Idina Menzel in “Frozen 2.” You can never count out two-time Oscar winner Randy Newman,...

After a challenging first half of 2018, the Recording Academy has premiered a new tone in a campaign entitled “We Are Music,” which was directed by Danny Clinch and features Swizz Beatz, H.E.R., Chad Hugo, Ann Mincieli and Rickey Minor and was serviced to members Monday morning. The tone is looser and less formal than the organization’s recent messaging — and perhaps most strikingly, especially in light of the recent criticism the Academy has weathered over a lack of diversity, no white males appear in the video.
The message accompanying the video reads as follows:
Greetings,
It’s important for us to celebrate the people who create music every day, the people who are the lifeblood of the Recording Academy.
That’s why we developed the first-ever Recording Academy campaign to shine a light on the professional performers, songwriters, producers, and engineers who make up our community.

There are a few things we already know about Justin Timberlake‘s highly anticipated Super Bowl Halftime show. The designer released a statement on Friday announcing that the star will be wearing custom designed pieces for his big night. And based on the sketches, there will be two different looks which vibe with the aesthetic of his new album Man of the Woods.

For a certain kind of hip-hop fan, the first time they heard Pusha T spit was either his venomous yuugh! ad-lib on G.O.O.D. Music's 2012 posse cut "Mercy," or his unlikely guest-spot on Kanye West's toast to the douchebags (and 2010's best song), "Runaway." "It's weird, I know," Pusha T thinks on it now, more than two decades after founding one of rap folklore's favorite duos, Clipse, with older brother No Malice (they formally disbanded last year). Even if you can't pinpoint the Virgina Beach native in a G.O.O.D. family portrait, you know Push: Clipse's Neptunes-produced "Grindin'" has been sampled everywhere, and his affinity for that pure white is legendary. In 2013, he boosted his profile with the release of My Name Is My Name, a searing debut solo album that was met with critical acclaim. He's spent the last two years reuniting with Pharrell and Chad Hugo,...

Sadly, we have reached the end of Empire’s highly entertaining and historic first season. While I know what I’ll be doing in its seasonal break to at least try to fill the void in my life – talking to Black aunties at various fish fry spots in Harlem, men with Lucious Lyon styled conks on the street, and ignoring the people emailing me their mixtapes – I am already envisioning how I would like season two to go. It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday, which means I hope Fox decides go through with plans to bring the show back in the fall as opposed to making me wait until January 2016. I don’t feel like waiting that long. Here’s what needs to happen next season:

Once upon a time, Pharrell Williams would produce songs for some of hip hop's biggest guns. These days, though, he seems to be writing new music exclusively for movies made for children. Last year he was responsible for the phenomenally ear-wormy "Happy," and this year he's been snuck into the Oscar race with a song for "Paddington." Today, too, comes word that Williams has resurrected his arty pop rock band N.E.R.D. (who had minor hits with "Lapdance" and "Everybody Nose") for the forthcoming "SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water." And it's pretty great (you can listen to it below via All Hip Hop).
Chad Hugo, Williams' partner in The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., talked to Variety about the new material (they're contributing two more songs: "Sandy Squirrel" and "Patrick Star"). "We're trying not to think too much in a cartoon sense," Hugo told Variety, "but more just like a psychedelic,...

There’s more chaos in Mariah Carey Land as she and her manager Jermaine Dupri have parted ways and veteran label executive Kevin Liles is now handling Team Mariah. As you’ll recall, Dupri was only on board as her official manager since last fall, but he and Carey have a very long history as musical collaborators, going back to 1995’s “Daydream.” He served as executive producer on Carey’s latest set, “Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse," and co-produced five tracks on the album. As you know, that album continues to circle the drain. It’s worst than if she’d never released an album because she now has this huge commercial failure around her neck. “Mariah” sold 58,000 in its first week of release in May, which was by far her poorest showing in her 25-year career. It’s a shame because the album, as overstuffed and scattered as it was,...
