In 1995, Hou Hsiao-hsien directed the last of the ”Taiwanese History” trilogy, which was his first film to be chiefly produced by a Japanese production company, Team Okuyama, although some Taiwanese companies also contributed. “Good Men, Good Women” won the Golden Deer for Best Director from the Changchun Film Festival, which was the first Chinese festival to accept entries from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Furthermore, the movie netted awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Recording from Golden Horse and was screened in Cannes in the competition section, among numerous other festivals around the world.

Few things are more aggravating than when you find yourself in need of a tow truck. Regardless of how excellent the towing agent is, there’s always a hassle waiting around the corner to cost you money, time, and sanity. Pop star and screen actor Demi Lovato is about to learn the brutal ways of the road by joining the cast of Tow, a new drama from director Stephanie Laing.
Tow is Demi Lovato’s first dramatic role in a feature film. Rose Byrne and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa join Lovato for the project, which is based on a true story. Tow stars Byrne as Amanda Ogle, “an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634.” (via Deadline)
Stephanie Laing is thrilled to tell Olge’s story. Speaking...

The presence of a camera changes things. Trained actors aside, most people are uncomfortable enough with the knowledge that there’s a lens in their face that they’ll change their behavior in turn. Ghosts, meanwhile, observe without being noticed, with only a few sensitive souls able to discern them at all. Steven Soderbergh’s latest cinematic experiment conflates the two, filming a haunted house story from the perspective of the spirit.
Ghosts are tied to a location, and so is “Presence.” The film takes place entirely within the confines of a handsome, century-old home — the furthest the characters get is the driveway, which the camera observes anxiously through a window like a dog awaiting its family’s return. The film unfolds in a series of single takes, which follow characters through the house and watch them from the closets and corners of various rooms. When an object floats across the room,...

For a prolific artist, a surge of creativity can often be synonymous with a dip in quality. Though not if you are Steven Soderbergh. He’s only continued to reinvent himself and forge ahead with new technology, subjects, and structural gambles. His latest film, Presence, is a haunting ghost tale wrapped in a nuanced family drama, and one of his most formally ambitious attempts yet. What if the camera, operated by Peter Andrews (aka Soderbergh), was the ghost? And every single shot in the film was a single take from this perspective? And, to further add to the self-imposed constraints, the ghost never leaves the house? From the very first shot, as we see the presence rapidly move through every room in the yet-to-be-sold empty house, laying the foundation for the horrors to take place, one senses Soderbergh is having a total blast with this concept. Reuniting after Kimi, David Koepp...

The Ten Tigers of Guangdong or Kwangtung were a group of ten kung fu masters who lived in southern China during the 19th Century Qing Dynasty. At times, their fighting skills recalled the styles of the better known Henan Shaolin Monastery of Mount Song, although they had lineage to the Southern Shaolin Monastery of the Fujian Province due to the connection between these two Monasteries. While much of their reputations had been enriched by folk legends passed down from generation to generation, these ten men were highly respected and considered as the greatest boxers in the Guangdong province during the Qing era.
