★★★☆☆Respect is a funny old thing. In order to get a little, you also have to give a little. What Sacha Bennett's sixth full feature, We Still Kill the Old Way (2014), stylishly and cheekily showcases the ramifications of children not seeing their way to respecting their elders. It knows when to have fun and sits easily between gritty gore and being irreverent to a fault, meanwhile the ganglands of East London have never looked more enticing. When aging gangster Charlie Archer (Steven Berkoff) is murdered by a group of hubristic criminal upstarts, led by upstart Aaron (Danny-Boy Hatchard), it is up to his brother Richie (Ian Ogilvy) to exact vengeance.

Danny Dyer supported daughter Dani Dyer at her movie premiere for We Still Kill The Old Way in London last night (September 28).
The 17-year-old aspiring actress, who has previously appeared with her father in movies such as 2009's Doghouse and the critically panned Run For Your Life, has a role in Sacha Bennett's British gangster movie.
The crime drama centres on a group of ageing East End gangsters who embark on a killing spree after one member is murdered by a feral street gang.
The pair were joined by Dyer's long-term partner and Dani's mother Joanne Mas. Dani is the couple's eldest daughter.
Other guests at the screening included former EastEnders actor Craig Fairbrass, former CBB star Casey Batchelor and ex-Emmerdale actress Adele Silva, who also stars in the film.

“They don’t write them like this any more, they really don’t” says a grinning Ian Ogilvy, sitting back casually in his dressing room on the set of Sacha Bennett’s dark crime thriller We Still Kill the Old Way. The actor, now in his 70s, once starred alongside the likes of Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis in Death Becomes Her, and Christopher Plummer and Orson Welles in Waterloo – yet the talented performer admits that work tends to dry up, in what can be a shrewd and unforgiving business.
“Men and women of my age don’t work that much any more, and in Hollywood, we work even less,” he said. “So I’ve done other things – I’ve been writing books, plays, I teach, I direct – I’ve found alternative ways of making a living. Which was lucky, because the business dries up for you. If you rely on acting at my age,...

On a rainy night in December 1995, three youngish gangsters called Tony Tucker, Patrick Tate and Craig Rolfe and plying their trade largely in Southend, were murdered in a Range Rover on a remote country lane near Rettendon in Essex. This drug-related gangland slaying has now become as staple a subject for the British cinema as Chicago's 1929 St Valentine's Day Massacre has been for Hollywood. Just as you've forgotten the explanation for the Rettendon killings, another one turns up with a slightly different plot and some new suspects. In 2000 we had Terry Winsor's Essex Boys where Sean Bean gets out of jail and pursues the grasses who put him away. Julian Gilbey's 2007 Rise of the Footsoldier traces the career of one Carlton Leach, a teenage West Ham football hooligan who becomes a major protection racketeer and ends up implicated in the Rettendon affair. Made in 2010, Sacha Bennett's Bonded by Blood...

Mark Kermode picks the year's best DVD releases that went largely unnoticed – but are too good to miss
Ping Pong
(Hugh Hartford, 2012, Britdoc Films, E)
A documentary about octogenarian (and upward) table tennis may not sound like the most obvious formula for life-affirming thrills, but this splendid account of the Oap "paddles of fire" circuit is as nail-biting as any sports event this year. Most impressively, the age of the participants (some in triple figures) quickly becomes an irrelevance as their competitive personalities take over to dominate the drama. There's nothing quaint or genteel about this battle of wits from players whose faculties, both physical and mental, have clearly been enhanced by the beautiful game.
The Dardennes Collection
(Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, 2012, Artificial Eye, 15)
The work of these most admirably humanist directors is gathered together in a six-disc collection which cements the Dardennes' reputation as guardians of the beating heart of cinema.

A group of printers invest in a racehorse.
There is a certain amount of retro charm to Sacha Bennett's film tale of print union strife and racing but it never really manages to break free from the small-screen shadow of the likes of Only Fools And Horses.

A new British film charts the battle of Wapping printworkers in 1986 against the Murdoch empire. It even stars Bob Hoskins
An industrial estate in Isleworth, west London, on Friday evening would swiftly disabuse anyone of the notion that film-making is a glamorous business. Extras in donkey jackets huddle in the rain around unlit braziers as the stench from the nearby sewage works drifts across the scene. A flu-ridden Bob Hoskins rubs his hands, his coughing drowned out by the whine of jets sinking into Heathrow. Spluttering old Transit vans are reversed into position, hand-painted signs that read "6,000 sacked by foreign bosses" are brandished, two police horses clop up, and suddenly we are transported back to Wapping in 1986.
"It's not about progress, it's about profit," shouts Hoskins as 70 extras gather around him, playing striking printers attempting to stop Rupert Murdoch's new Wapping printworks from getting its newspapers out. The sky...

The sky...

Damsels In Distress (12A)
(Whit Stillman, 2011, Us) Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Adam Brody, Ryan Metcalf, Megalyn Echikunwoke. 99 mins
Stillman casts a wry eye across the college campus, and settles on Gerwig's clique of preppy girls who confuse charity with condescension. The result is distinctively articulate, witty, gently surreal and hilariously sarcastic. But as well as parodying these misguided teens, Stillman clearly has great sympathy for them. It's good to have him back.
Avengers Assemble (12A)
(Joss Whedon, 2012, Us) Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson. 142 mins
Considering the lack of leeway Whedon had with this superhero juggernaut, he pulls off a remarkable feat, keeping all the plates spinning with as much irony as he can get away with. It descends into a numbing effects orgy, but it's fast and fun along the way.
Albert Nobbs (15)
(Rodrigo García, 2011, UK/Ire) Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska. 113 mins

On the same night as the Strippers vs. Werewolves premiere, stars of another new British movie, Outside Bet were in town for their own premiere. Our friends from our very own Ben Mortimer and Upbeat were there to chat with the cast of the movie as they walked the red carpet. During the interview, we find out that the horse they used in the movie was actually called ‘Rocky’ and how director Sacha Bennett found working with his great cast.
Outside Bet is directed by Sacha Bennett and stars Bob Hoskins, Philip Davis, Adam Deacon, Emily Atack, Terry Stone, Jenny Agutter many of whim were at the premiere on Tuesday night.
Developed from The Mumper written by Mark Baxter and Paolo Hewitt. Set against the turbulent mid 80′s of money, privatization, unions and dramatic media evolution: A life-long group of friends find themselves at the bad end of a redundancy...

Exclusive: Atlas Independent will make Mojave, a crime thriller scripted and to be directed by William Monahan. They are keeping the plot specifics quiet, but production is set to begin August in Southern California. It will be the second directorial effort for Monahan, who won an Oscar writing The Departed and made his debut behind the camera on London Boulevard. It is the fourth project for Atlas Independent, an offshoot of Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment. “Working with Chuck Roven and Atlas is perfection from my point of view, and has already led to a brilliant ongoing relationship,” Monahan said. “It’s the strongest possible company and they’re specifically in the business of protecting quality work. Atlas and I have decided to do a lot of work together and here we go.” Said Atlas Independent producer William Green: “This script is Monahan at his absolute best.” While Roven...

[Editor's note: Don't forget to enter to win one of five DVDs of Bonded by Blood]
The best true-crime films are usually written like tragedies. Goodfellas, Blow, Scarface, Stander; all Icarus tales about guys growing up on the fringes, becoming made men and then getting too greedy when the dirty money starts rolling in. Their rise is usually an entertaining whirlwind of glamor and excess while their downfall exposes the American dream as a breeding ground for ungentlemanly behavior. And of course, their death/capture is always depicted with a certain epic gravitas in order to give the characters mythic qualities. Say hello to my little friend! Yes, our criminals are as mythic as our heroes.
Unfortunately, while Bonded by Blood delivers on its promise of showing the true story of the "Essex Boys" in all its bloody foul-mouthed glory, there is no real joy in watching...

Just as the real-life Essex Boys saw themselves as big gangsters, “Bonded by Blood,” the film about their rise and fall, thinks of itself as a definitive gangster flick, but both crumble in the end.
The film, written and directed by Sacha Bennett, is based on the events that led to the 1995 murder of three drug gang members in the city of Rettendon, Essex. Pat Tate (Tamer Hassan), Craig Rolfe (Neil Maskell) and Tony Tucker (Terry Stone) are shot in the head while sitting in their Range Rover. Jack Whomes (Dave Legeno) and Mickey Steele (Vincent Regan) are convicted of the murders based on testimony from Darren Nicholls (Adam Deacon), who is later placed in witness protection. The story is not new to the screen,...

*Full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was supplied by Revolver Entertainment.
Director/writer: Sacha Bennett.
Bonded by Blood is loosely based on a group murder carried out December, 1995. The three killed were Patrick Tate, Craig Rolfe and Tony Tucker, each a drug dealer. These villains have been immortalized unjustly in three films, which include: The Essex Boys (2000), Rise of the Foot Soldier (2007) and now Bonded by Blood (2011). Likely killed by Jack Whomes and Michael Steele, who remain in prison, Bonded by Blood covers a detestable subject (drug dealing), with little depth. Revolver Entertainment will distribute this title on DVD February 1st and this film is really only for those who enjoy watching gangland styled films, as there is no positive moral tale here.
Many may have heard the story of The Intercity Firm and their coke induced exploits, but for those who have not - here is a summary.

Bob Hoskins is one of the many talented stars of this fall's Made in Dagenham, which has gotten disappointingly little Oscar buzz given its stellar cast and generally heartwarming story. Hoskins plays an auto plant manager who helps the women there go on strike, but he's apparently not done telling stories about labor issues. According to THR he'll play a role in Weighed In: The Story of the Mumper, centered around the 1980s strike by British newspaper workers. No, I have no idea what a mumper is, though it seems fair to assume there's some British slang involved in creating that word. Joining Hoskins will be Jenny Agutter and Emily Atack, with Calum McNab, Adam Deacon, Vincent Regan, Terry Stone and Perry Benson all on board already for director Sacha Bennett. Yes, this may be the most obscurely British story in the world to tell, but i would have said...

The Last Exorcism (15)
(Daniel Stamm, 2010, Us) Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell. 87 mins
There's an epic, gothic Dennis Wheatley-style horror struggling to get out of this curiously lightweight mockumentary, in which a jaded Louisiana evangelical priest (Fabian) takes on a local case of possession to prove that demons only exist in the mind. Stamm orchestrates some good old-fashioned in-camera shocks, but the handheld format is limiting, and what ought to be a truly horrific climax ends in a tired Blair Witch fizzle rather than a bang.
Certified Copy (12A)
(Abbas Kiarostami, 2010, Fr/It/UK) Juliette Binoche, William Shimell, 107 mins
Slightly wooden but deceptively memorable meta romance, in which a woman (Binoche) meets a man (Shimell) who may or may not be her husband.
Dinner For Schmucks
(12A) (Jay Roach, 2010, Us) Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis. 114 mins
Rudd is an aspiring exec who takes Carell to his boss's who-can-bring-the-biggest-nerd dinner party.

Revolver have sent us this brand new clip for their UK movie, Bonded by Blood which is directed by Sacha Bennett and stars Tamer Hassan, Terry Stone and Neil Maskell. It looks a little bit like Snatch in the way it’s shot only with an awful lot more swearing!
Synopsis: In 1995, drug suppliers and career criminals Tony Tucker (Terry Stone), Patrick Tate (Tamer Hassan) and Craig Rolfe (Neil Maskell) were blasted to death by a shot gun whilst waiting in a Range Rover in Rettendon, Essex. Bonded By Blood charts their rise to become the most prolific dealers and deared criminals in the south of England, maintaining the hold on their empire with fear and violence until their untimely death.
Bonded by Blood is released in the UK September 3rd. You can find out more on the official website here.
