Exclusive: A new musical based on the award-winning 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles and the life of beauty queen, socialite and TV personality Jacqueline “Jackie” Siegel is in development, with Kristin Chenoweth attached to star and produce.
The project would reunite Chenoweth with her Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz, who is on board to write the music. An industry reading is set for March 24 in New York City, in preparation for an out of town engagement with additional details to be announced.

Lauren Greenfield’s The Queen of Versailles 2012 documentary depicted the often bizarre lives of Jackie Siegel and David Siegel, owners of Westgate Resorts, as they struggled to build the largest private home in America in Orlando, Florida — a $100 million house inspired by the Palace of Versailles. Their plans – and their lives – were derailed by the Great Recession of 2008.
The stage musical will reunite Schwartz with Broadway superstar Chenoweth (who will play Jackie Siegel), and feature a book by Lindsey Ferrentino and direction by Tony nominee Michael Arden. The project is described as “a new musical exploring the true cost of fame, fortune, and family.”
The Queen of Versailles is produced by Bill Damaschke. Chenoweth will also act as producer through her production banner Diva Worldwide Entertainment.

The Festival, which will take place between the 31st May – 3 June at Picturehouse Central, will open with the UK premiere of Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, starring Laura Dern and Elizabeth Debicki. The festival also honours British talent once again, this time by premiering Idris Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie. Jeff Lewis and the whole Flipping Out team have flipped coasts and landed in Florida to handle their biggest makeover yet: Jackie Siegel’s Orlando palace.
The massive estate, featured in the 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles, is one of the largest single-family homes in the country -- and features some, well, interesting rooms. Et has your exclusive first look at Thursday night’s episode, which finds Jeff and co. exploring one of those spaces, which Siegel calls a “dance room.”
The alcove is hidden behind a pair of gold curtains, which open to reveal a window, which Siegel claims people dance behind at parties. But when the group, including former Real Housewives of Miami star Lea Black, start poking around, they notice some interesting items… like sex toys and a collection of lingerie.

Private detective Charlie Parker, who appears in the documentary The Imposter, tweeted last week that he’s working with Storyville Entertainment on a potential TV show. I asked him if it was about his work, and he said yes. I didn’t want to press or pry too much at such an early stage, so it’s not clear yet if this would be a reality series starring him and following along with his investigations or if it would be a dramatic program based on or inspired by past stories from his career. Either way, it could be great. Parker really stole the show in the last act of The Imposter, and a number of fans have called for a spin-off documentary feature solely focused on him. A documentary series would be even better. It’s surprising that more documentary subjects don’t break out and become stars of their own reality series. I...

When filmmaker Lauren Greenfield set out to make her documentary The Queen of Versailles, her goal was to capture the incredibly luxurious lifestyle of David and Jaqueline Siegel, who were preparing to build the largest single family private home in America, modeled after the French palace of Versailles. But then the housing crisis hit, and Mr. Siegel, whose fortune had been built on his expansive time-share operation, was hit hard. In light of economic crisis, the Siegel family was forced to radically change their lifestyle and sell their $75 million American palace, which was still under construction. For her part, Greenfield found herself capturing every moment, from Jaqueline's attempts to buy her kids Christmas gifts at Wal-Mart, to the couple's mounting marital tension, and the growing business concerns of David and his company, Westgate Resorts. Watching the film, you clearly see David struggling to keep his company afloat, and personally I...

With the credits poised to roll on 2012, it's time for the Guardian's countdown through the year's best films. We start at number 10: Lauren Greenfield's tragicomic documentary about the Us housing crisis
It's been a pretty good year for documentaries. Bart "Banged Up Abroad" Layton gave us the trashy thrills of The Imposter, Alma Har'el's Bombay Beach offered a mournful valediction to ruined lives on the American margins, while Werner Herzog – who else – took an intriguingly uninflected position on the death penalty with Into the Abyss. But Lauren Greenfield's The Queen of Versailles was arguably the pick of the year, zeroing in on a very contemporary fable and telling its story with sly wit and a degree of empathy.
Greenfield hasn't arrived from nowhere, though: a photographer of considerable distinction, she put herself on the map with her Girl Culture book before breaking into feature-length film-making with the eating-disorder doco Thin,...

Los Angeles — "Killing Them Softly" is a stylish and violent dark comedy about low-level gangsters and thugs, set squarely within the U.S. economic collapse of autumn 2008. In rather heavy-handed fashion, it suggests that the mob functions as a microcosm of American capitalism. Thankfully, Brad Pitt is there to keep it from going under.
A lot of movies have tried to get their arms around this complicated topic that affected every single one of us in some way. Here's a look at five that did it successfully:
_ "Inside Job" (2010): Winner of the Academy Award for best documentary feature, director Charles Ferguson's film accomplishes the difficult task of taking an unwieldy subject and making it accessible to a wide audience. You don't have to know the difference between a credit default swap and a collateralized debt obligation to feel enraged all over again. Still, it's a daunting topic,...

This week on DVD/Blu-ray: Lauren Greenfield's timely documentary that opened this year's Sundance Film Festival; the latest from Oliver Stone; Amy Heckerling's reunion with her "Clueless" star Alicia Silverstone; Julie Delpy's winning follow-up to "2 Days in Paris"; and the latest dry comedy from Todd Solondz. #1. "The Queen of Versailles" Criticwire Page Acclaimed documentary filmmaker and photographer Lauren Greenfield ("Thin") didn't know what she was getting herself into when she approached billionaire Jackie Siegel (wife to timeshare titan David) at a party hosted by Donatella Versace. Greenfield's initial intention was to photograph Jackie for a photographic work about wealth, consumerism and the American Dream. But as soon as Greenfield found out that the Siegels were in the midst of building the biggest home in America, she picked up her movie camera and began to document the family's...

This documentary gives curious viewers a glimpse into the life of timeshare mogul David Siegel and his family. The titular ‘queen’ is Siegel’s wife Jacqueline, and Versailles is the monster home they are constructing. Modelled on the original French palace, Versailles was set to become the biggest house in America. Having begun filming prior to the financial crisis, director Lauren Greenfield had planned to document the building of this house, and at the same time observe the lifestyle of a family that had fully achieved the American dream. The crisis must have seemed like a gift, offering the film a depth of contrast, a poignancy even, that might have been lacking in a straightforward portrait of extreme consumerism.
In truth though, what poignancy there is in this film exists independently of the Siegels’ financial troubles. It is misleading to call this a ‘riches to rags’ tale: these are the words of David Siegel himself,...

The photographer and film-maker on the lovable billionaires in her new documentary, and the state of the American Dream
Your new documentary film, The Queen of Versailles, follows a billionaire family from Florida, the Siegels, as they build the largest house in America: a 90,000 sq ft palace inspired by the French chateau (and the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas). What was your personal reaction to their plan?
In a way, my journey was not dissimilar to what I tried to show in the film. In the beginning I was amazed, fascinated, overwhelmed and horrified by this house, but they were so proud of it. In my work I'm usually looking for the people, the situations, the characters that reveal our culture and our cultural values. I've been interested for a while in the connection between home ownership and the American Dream: how the houses got bigger and bigger during the boom,...
