According to the 2020 Census, there are over 62 million people identifying as Hispanic in the United States. That’s approximately one-fifth of the population, and though obviously not all of these people are active Spanish speakers, it’s nevertheless a sizeable audience for providers of Spanish-language content to target.
Streaming services that focus on content in Spanish are finding themselves dealing with issues that are plaguing the industry at large. Namely, younger audiences are more and more difficult to reach, as social media viewing on platforms like TikTok outpaces the amount of time youthful viewers are spending on streaming platforms.
A report from the Los Angeles Times outlines the steps that Spanish-language providers are taking to lure young audiences back. Telemundo, which houses its Spanish streaming service Tplus within NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, has done so by making subtle tweaks to the classic telenovela genre. Telemundo is bringing star Fernando Colunga back to the screen after a multi-year break from novelas for “El Conde,” an established novela format. Telemundo’s spin is a period drama set in the 1930s and ’50s, revolving around a man who is thought to have died in jail but turns up 17 years later to the surprise of his family and associates. Other cast members include Ana Brenda Contreras, Marjorie de Sousa, Chantal Andere and Sergio Sendel. It was shot stages and on location
“Vuelve a Mi” is also a high-budget production, a love-triangle mystery revolving around characters who lives intertwine after a woman’s son is kidnapped. The series, set to run about 90 episodes, stars William Levy,...

“El Señor de los Cielos” will ramp up even more of the war on narcos as the Telemundo series enters its ninth season.
“This is a narco series, however, it deals with a bunch of things happening to the family in relationships [and] in the family ties, but people want to see more of the narco world, so we’re gonna make sure we bring more of that,” Telemundo Global Studios production and development EVP Karen Barroeta told TheWrap. “The war on the narcos between Colombia and Mexico is going to be coming back.”
As the series spotlights the narco world even more than before, audiences might recognize El Cabo, who makes his triumphant return for the full ninth season.
Protagonist Aurelio (Rafael Amaya) also returns better than ever for the next chapter in the series with a new lease on life, settling back into his beloved persona as a true...

Miami, home to the two leading U.S. Hispanic networks — TelevisaUnivision and Telemundo — as well as a host of smaller television companies, studio outposts, recording artists and independent entertainment companies, has long been the cultural epicenter of both Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic population.
“It is not just the geographic location that makes Miami a hub: In so many ways, the city is also representative of the cultural diversity across Latin America and among all U.S. Hispanics,” says Karen Barroeta, executive VP, production and development, Telemundo Global Studios, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises.
“On top of its rich cultural diversity, Miami is a world-class city in which to make television, with the highest quality production studios and a skillful workforce including incredible talent, from production teams to writers and actors,” she says.

When faced with tense work situations, Karen Barroeta recommends that industry newcomers hone their emotional intelligence and rein in one’s immediate feelings when confronted with a difficult conversation.
“It’s very important when there are situations, that you learn first to listen to others [and] find feedback [from] people that you trust,” Barroeta, the executive vice president of production and development at Telemundo Global Studios, told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “Don’t react in the moment. Find time to think about the situation and then strategize about it.”
As she leads the network’s development strategy and oversees all long-form scripted productions across mediums, Barroeta scopes out pilots and projects that will appeal to Spanish-speaking audiences across the country for the NBCUniversal-owned property, which currently stands as the largest producer of Spanish-language scripted content in the United States. That requires making tough decisions and balancing data with gut checks.

Romance, suspense and drama dominate the 2023 slate of Telemundo Global Studios, which presented its 2023 lineup at Content Americas under the banner The Telemundo Edge. Speaking to Variety before hosting Telemundo’s presentation, Karen Barroeta, executive VP of production and development, noted: “We have evolved the genre so much that we now call them contemporary dramas, not telenovelas.” The long-form format runs an average of 80 episodes, stripped Monday to Friday, instead of the 120+ count of the traditional telenovelas.
Telemundo’s programming is also buoyed by its action-packed Super Series, the International Emmy-winning franchise “El Señor de los Cielos” (“Lord of the Skies”), which just launched Season 8 on Jan. 17 to stellar ratings. Inspired by real events, the show stars Rafael Amaya as the titular drug lord who undergoes plastic surgery in order to evade capture. “The show is always rooted in reality,” said Barroeta who added that writer/creator Luis Zelkowicz has some 800 hours under his belt.
