Springer Opts Against Senate Run
Jerry Springer yesterday announced he has decided against running for the American Senate next year - because his controversial talk show has tarnished his image. Springer, a Democrat, was willing to quit his show and its chair-tossing guests if he ran for the Senate seat held by Republican George Voinovich since 1998. It would have been his first run for elective office since he served as mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1978-81. But he says, "As long as I'm doing that show, my message, no matter how sincere and no matter how heartfelt, does not get through to the people I need to reach. That separation obviously hasn't taken place and would not take place in time for this election. I respect that." Springer has traveled across Ohio over the last six months, speaking at Democratic dinners and gauging his support.
