- Before becoming a presenter on That's Life! (1973), he worked as a sound recordist and dubbing mixer. He acquired the nickname "Doc" because when he was working on location he always carried his lunchtime sandwiches in a black doctor's bag.
- In his spare time he used to be a writer and singer of risqué songs, appearing under the name of "Ivor Biggun".
- Was the vocalist on UK number 12 hit "Winkers Song (misprint)" in September 1978.
