Fill the cannons with stuffed animals and watch the fluff fly as Eli Roth’s Borderlands takes the Lionsgate stage at CinemaCon! The annual entertainment event is in full swing after yesterday’s Warner Bros. panel and reveal of Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer. With film and television fans fired up about upcoming releases, Lionsgate is ready to take them to a wasteland where kooky characters try to kill each other, and a fabled vault of riches awaits.

The Oscar season is going on, and trophies are being handed out left and right. Deserving artists are getting the recognition they worked so hard for. Celebrated filmmakers, actors, and technicians are getting their due. All in all, things are pretty exciting at the moment, and cinema fans are getting a lot of excitement from it. But one cannot help but wonder if it’s about time video games started getting recognized by the Academy too.
Over the years, video games have grown from being a source of mindless entertainment to something much more immersive and meaningful. With this evolution, performances from lead actors have become a central part of these games. And over the years, there have been performances by actors that could have easily won the best actor award at the Oscars.

Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. I don’t want to say anything about it yet, but she’s so smart I’m like, ‘Let’s write a movie together, and we’ll produce it together, and I’ll direct it, and you’ll star in it.’” Of course, Roth didn’t give away any details about the story he and Greenblatt are collaborating on. Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

An adaptation of the popular video game, Eli Roth’s Borderlands is finally set for big screen release this summer, and the official trailer has arrived as promised this morning.
Lionsgate will be releasing Borderlands on August 9, 2024.
Watch the Borderlands movie trailer below!
It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. Gunn is a master of threading story and deep character work into all the action, and this will likely sink or swim based on how well it does the same. For now, it looks and feels like Borderlands. And that’s a good start.
The ensemble cast for the video game movie includes Jack Black as Claptrap, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland,...

Roth’s Thanksgiving slasher is scheduled to reach theatres on November 17, 2023, the Friday before the Thanksgiving holiday. Now Deadline has broken the news that Borderlands will reach theatres about eight months later, on August 2, 2024. So we still have a year to wait before we’ll be able to watch this one.
We had heard that The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the screenplay for Borderlands, but according to Deadline the final script was actually written by Roth and Joe Crombie.

This post contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
Being a superhero movie fan requires a constant suspension of disbelief. Whether we're accepting the narrative coexistence of what Sam Wilson calls "the big three", looking past the fact that no one in the world ever really responded to the appearance of Tiamut in "Eternals," or glossing over some high-profile recasts, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are pretty consistently asked to just kind of roll with things.
Now fifteen years into its run, the franchise has also gotten into the habit of reusing some actors in more than one role, a method that can be either distracting or delightful depending on the context. The list of actors who have appeared in more than one MCU role is already massive, but it grew even more this week as "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" repurposed familiar voices and faces in surprising new roles.

Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s Rob Licuria about the awards season and his character of Colm Doherty, who decides to stop being friends with someone (Oscar nominee Colin Farrell) he sees as intellectually inferior. The quirky Martin McDonagh period piece from Searchlight Pictures is nominated for a whopping nine Academy Awards bids, including Best Picture.
Even though he boasts a resume spanning decades, “Banshees” marks Gleeson’s first ever Oscar nom. “I have to say I’m chuffed — I really am,” the Irish actor tells us. As it turns out, Gleeson was in the midst of filming “Joker: Folie à Deux” when he got the call on Oscar nominations morning telling him to “get a tux.” He adds, “I was overjoyed … it’s just brilliant.”

London, Feb 20 (Ians) Manchester United confirmed their candidacy for the Premier League title thanks to a 3-0 home win over Leicester City.
Marcos Rashford continued his impressive run of form, with goals in the 25th and 56th minute of the game, with Jadon Sancho scoring Man Utd’s third goal, although David de Gea had a good claim to be named Man of the Match after a series of impressive saves to assure a clean sheet, reports Xinhua news agency.
The result leaves Erik ten Hag’s side just three points behind neighbors Manchester City and five behind league leaders Arsenal.
Tottenham moved into fourth place ahead of Newcastle United, who lost 2-0 at home to Liverpool on Saturday, after a much-improved second half display saw them to a 2-0 win at home over West Ham.

It was in the small courtyard of a house in Galway on the west coast of Ireland that arguably the most important audition for The Banshees of Inisherin took place.
After a casting call had been put out across the country, on one grayish morning in late 2020 — a full year before shooting started — a trailer pulled up with four aspiring young hopefuls in the back. Writer-director Martin McDonagh, director of photography Ben Davis and production designer Mark Tildesley — who had been living together under lockdown while prepping for Searchlight’s period tragicomedy about a friendship gone awry on the fictional island of Inisherin in 1923 — went outside to inspect.
As the quartet of budding screen performers were paraded around, McDonagh spotted his star instantly.
“She just stood out. There was just something about her,” the director recalls. “I don’t know if it was her eyes, which were almost perfectly oval.

“The film was like working with a canvas all the time,” declares cinematographer Ben Davis B.S.C. about the painterly visual aesthetic of “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which he says was ultimately more rewarding than challenging. For our recent webchat he adds, “it was terrific to work on. People say it must have been really challenging, but you know, the challenging thing about making the film was that we were living that life. We were on this tiny island in a very sort of claustrophobic environment. A lot of people for a long time, during a pandemic. So, if anything that there was the emotional challenge of that, but luckily no one cut their fingers off thankfully,” he smiles. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The characters of “The Banshees of Inisherin” live on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, where the harsh weather and separation from larger world conflicts intensify the connections and conflicts between the island’s inhabitants. According to cinematographer Ben Davis, the cast and crew experienced a similar sense of isolation, though with far happier results than the fate of the fallen-out friends played in the film by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The relative inaccessibility of the islands where they were shooting combined with Covid-19 restrictions created ideal conditions to yield some of the most beautiful and lyrical images of the cinematographer’s career.
The effects of Covid were felt — and had ironically positive effects — starting in pre-production, when Davis and writer-director Martin McDonagh were isolated together in quarantine. “We had to quarantine together on the Irish mainland for 10 days, because there was no Covid on the islands,...

British cinematographer Ben Davis is an early awards frontrunner for his work on Martin McDonagh’s latest The Banshees of Inisherin, but he told Deadline that his focus remains firmly on the film’s financial performance.
“My priorities with Banshees are I want the film to be good, and I want it to succeed financially,” he told Deadline during a sit-down at the Camerimage film festival in Torun, Poland. “I look at where cinema is at the moment, particularly independent cinema, and I’m concerned. I know a lot of studios are looking, and these films aren’t making the money they did pre-pandemic.”
Banshees opened to an estimated 181,000 and a per-screen average of 45,250. The film currently sits over 15 million worldwide.

Location and scenery play a big role in the tone of a film and were especially important for writer and director Martin McDonagh with The Banshees of Inisherin.
The movie, set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, provided not only beautiful photography but flexibility by having everyone and everything in one isolated place, according to cinematographer Ben Davis. Ahead of the film’s screening at the Camerimage International Film Festival, which begins Nov. 12, Davis is diving into how he captured McDonagh’s vision in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast.

London, Nov 13 (Ians) Brentford striker Ivan Toney made his point after being left out of the England squad for the World Cup finals on Saturday when he scored both goals in his side’s surprise 2-1 win away to Manchester City.
Toney was on hand to finish off the winner by the visitors in the 98th minute of the game, with an easy finish on the six-yard line.
He had put Brentford ahead in the 19th minute with a trademark powerful header, although Phil Foden’s left-foot shot on the stroke of halftime levelled the score, reports Xinhua.
Brentford then resisted possession football, with the home side having 74 per cent of the ball, but despite plenty of shots, City were unable to get the ball past David Raya, who will travel to the World Cup with Spain after a very solid display.

When “Banshees of Inisherin” cinematographer Ben Davis received the film’s script, his reaction was that while there were many interpretations to be had, it was the conflict that spoke to him. “Particularly men in conflict and how most wars are created and caused by men, and maybe they could have sorted that out, and they didn’t need to do that,” says Davis.
The Martin McDonagh helmed film stars Colin Farrell as Padraic and Brendan Gleeson as Colm. The two have been friends for years, but when Pádraic goes to call on Colm for their usual afternoon walk to the pub, Colm pretends he doesn’t see or hear him. When Colm finally makes his way to the bar, he tells Pádraic that he doesn’t like him anymore, and simply doesn’t want to be his friend anymore.
For Davis, the key to framing the story was distance.

For nearly eight years, the name Martin McDonagh was synonymous with the West End and Broadway, where he was regularly praised for his work as a playwright. He then won his first Oscar for his live action short “Six Shooter” in 2006, and that would be a fine benchmark that proved McDonagh was ready to take his talent from stage to screen. Now he’s back in the awards discussion thanks to Searchlight Pictures’ “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
Four years after “Six Shooter,” McDonagh directed his debut feature, “In Bruges,” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason. Months after premiering at Sundance, Farrell would win a Golden Globe for his performance, while McDonagh received another Oscar nomination, this time for his Best Original Screenplay. (The British Academy rewarded McDonagh with a BAFTA for said screenplay.)
Although McDonagh’s second feature, “Seven Psychopaths,” came and went without much notice in 2012, he followed that...

Writer/director Martin McDonagh has a rare gift, he can wrestle beauty from bad behaviour, poor decisions and abject squirming shame. For The Banshees of Inisherin, he drew deep upon that gift to craft an unforgettable and utterly bonkers journey through the implosion of a friendship between two boring men. You will not come away unscathed.
Every day Inisherin islanders Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) meet at their local pub to share a pint and pass the time. The two men have been good friends for years and the routine is something that Pádraic – a self-proclaimed nice man – has come to rely on. The life of a smallholder is a solitary one and, besides his loving sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon), Colm is Pádraic’s only confidant.
Unfortunately, Pádraic doesn’t really have anything interesting to confide. His small life has rendered his small talk microscopic and Colm, realising...

Like it or not, fall 2022 appears to be the season of Harry Styles. He’s been discussed ad infinitum in the most overexposed film in memory and also this one, “My Policeman,” helmed by English theater director Michael Grandage. On the press trail, Styles informed us that this film about the decades-spanning relationship between Tom, a closeted cop (Styles); art curator Patrick; and Emma Corrin as Tom’s long-suffering wife Marion, is not “a gay story about these guys being gay.’ It’s about love and about wasted time to me.”
If you say so, but the way he seems to read his own movie suggests he didn’t understand the assignment. That’s reflected in a performance that registers as a blank beyond inscrutable gazes and sappy breakdowns. To play a repressed gay man involved in a steamy, behind-closed-doors affair requires levels of complexity and conveying inner turmoil that Styles can’t provide.

My Policeman, which had its world premiere today at the Toronto Film Festival, has its roots in a novel by Bethan Roberts which was actually based on a complicated love relationship between famed novelist E.M. Forster; his male lover of 40 years, a policeman named Bob Buckingham; and Buckingham’s wife May Hockey, who slowly came to realize her husband had a long-standing affair with Forster, but even after he had suffered a series of strokes took care of the author in his later life so deep was their friendship. Roberts changed the names and fictionalized it all for her book, which is now the basis of Ron Nyswaner’s (Philadelphia) screenplay that explores the love triangle of three freewheeling friends in 1957 who each was hobbled by the mores of the time, repressing rather than expressing their own sexuality, even as the...

Playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh is up to more deliciously fiendish tricks in The Banshees of Inisherin, a simple and diabolical tale of a friendship’s end shot through with bristling humor and sudden moments of startling violence. It world premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival Monday. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and the small handful of supporting players make the most of the author’s vibrant prose in McDonagh’s first film since Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri five years ago.
“I just don’t like ya’ no more,” old bear Colm Doherty (Gleeson) bluntly informs the younger Padraic (Farrell) when the two encounter one another at the pub where the few inhabitants of the tiny, bleakly beautiful seaside community above the pounding Atlantic inevitably spend most of their time. One can only deduce that these men have spent endless hours with each other over the years — there...

Ireland’s rural West was the setting for a cluster of plays hatched out of a remarkably prolific early period in the mid-‘90s that thrust Martin McDonagh onto the map. But aside from the title initially intended to complete his Aran Islands trilogy, The Banshees of Inisherin remained for decades at a larval stage, unproduced and unpublished. The playwright considered it an immature work, floating the possibility of returning to it later in life. Preserving the title but spinning an entirely new yarn to flesh out its suggestion of folk balladry, the writer-director’s superbly acted fourth feature is his most Irish work for the screen to date, and also one of his best.

The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys will take place on Sunday night, where hot races such as guest acting, music and stunts will be revealed.
History could be made with “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” from Disney+ could be the first animated movie to win for outstanding television movie, after becoming the first ever to be nominated.
However, we could see if HBO will be in line to make history if it takes the category for Barry Levinson’s “The Survivor.” HBO is able to win all the top series categories for drama (“Succession”), comedy (“Barry” or “Hacks”) and limited (“The White Lotus”). It would be the first network in history to win all four if achieved.

Although there’s been a bit of controversy about how few series are recognized in the Emmys’ guest actor and guest actress categories, there are quite a few talented stars who have yet to win an Emmy — or even be recognized at all by the Television Academy.
Many thought Tom Pelphrey, who portrayed Ben Davis in “Ozark,” would get an acting nomination last year following his very intense arc on the Netflix series. Instead, he was snubbed and with the death of the character, thought that journey was over.
Until Season 4 was about to start filming.

After Tom Pelphrey stole Season 3 of “Ozark” as Ben Davis, Wendy’s (Laura Linney) bipolar brother, his first Primetime Emmy nomination seemed all but assured. But to everyone’s surprise, the two-time Daytime Emmy winner was egregiously omitted from the drama supporting actor lineup at the 2020 Emmys, thus missing out on his only chance to be recognized for this role by the TV Academy — or so we thought. Even though Ben bites the dust at the end of the Netflix drama’s third season, Pelphrey reprises his role in a brief flashback in the show’s fourth and final installment — one that has now earned him an Emmy bid for Best Drama Guest Actor. Surely, residual goodwill for his Season 3 performance helped tip him over the edge for this citation, but could it now also catapult him all the way to his inaugural victory?
If it does, it won’t necessarily be easy.

“Ozark” star Tom Pelphrey did not believe he would get nominated for a Primetime Emmy this year. Even though he watched the nominations announcement from Berlin, Germany, with his partner Kaley Cuoco, he was doing so mainly to see whether Cuoco would land another bid for her series “The Flight Attendant” — and she did. “We were very excited, started celebrating,” recounted Pelphrey in a new webchat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive interview above), adding, “Then, we sort of walked away from the computer and we were FaceTiming with her friends and family.” It was not until 10 minutes later that he, through a phone call from the United States, learned that he himself had earned a citation for Best Drama Guest Actor, a category that is notably not presented during the main announcement. “I picked up, and they said, ‘You got nominated for an Emmy!’ I was shocked. After stealing Season 3 of “Ozark” as Ben Davis, Wendy’s (Laura Linney) bipolar brother, Tom Pelphrey was poised to nab his maiden Primetime Emmy nomination in 2020 — or so we thought. Even as the Netflix show racked up its most citations ever for a single season with 18, Pelphrey was omitted from the TV academy’s Best Drama Supporting Actor lineup. But thanks to his surprising guest appearance in the show’s fourth and final installment, he is now back in Emmy contention for the gritty crime drama and ready to avenge his egregious snub.

In the tense border drama “Transpecos,” the line between right and wrong blurs as the heat rises in the desert. The film follows three border patrol agents — the rookie Benjamin Davis (Johnny Simmons), the seasoned pro Lance Flores (Gabriel Luna), and the callous veteran Lou Hobbs (Clifton Collins Jr.) — who man a check point on a remote highway. One day on a routine stop, Hobbs examines a suspicious vehicle, but when the car tries to take off Hobbs shoots the passenger as they discover a trunk filled with cocaine. Before they can call it in, Davis pulls a gun on the two agents and claims that he must smuggle the drugs to a drop-off point or else his family will die. Drawn into a violent journey, all three must contend with dark secrets, malleable morality, and a potentially terrible fate. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.
