Kyra Sedgwick crafted a detailed backstory for her character Aunt Julia, who catalyzes the plot for Season 2 of “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”
Julia is Susannah’s half-sister who inherits the Cousins Beach house after Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) dies between the first and second seasons of the show. To thwart Julia’s sale of the house, Susannah’s son Conrad goes missing. His brother Jeremiah and their joint love interest Belly join in to make the sale a living hell.
“It was good to be somebody who comes in and affects change. That’s a great character to play. Without her there wouldn’t be a plot this season,” Sedgwick told TheWrap over the phone before the SAG-AFTRA strike began. “I think she is a formidable antagonist because I think that she feels right and dug into her side. She has a different experience in that house, and I think that to a degree,...

Season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty is pulling in big viewership numbers, which made Prime Video’s announcement that the coming-of-age drama has been renewed for season three not in the least bit shocking. The official announcement confirmed there will be a 10-episode third season but didn’t reveal any specifics about the upcoming season.
According to the streaming service, season three was actually greenlit before either the writers or actors strikes. Obviously, production will not get underway until the strikes are over.
The series is based on Jenny Han’s bestselling trilogy, and Han and Sarah Kucserka will continue as showrunners for the 10-episode third season. Han, Kucserka, Karen Rosenfelt, and wiip’s Hope Hartman, Mads Hansen, and Paul Lee executive produce.

Belly Conklin is back in the official trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2.
Unfortunately for Belly, the tone in the just-released footage is anything but pretty.
Ever since its debut on Prime Video last summer, the series has focused on the relationship between the characters as they try to come to terms with the pitfalls of being a teenager.
The new trailer has a somber tone that won't let up as we witness Belly's struggle about whether Conrad or Jeremiah is right for her.
There are also hints that Belly might be losing someone close to her, possibly for good, which leaves us with more questions than answers as we await fresh episodes of the teen drama.
To help hit you right in the feels, Prime Video included Taylor Swift's "Back to December (Taylor's Version)" and August.
Some scenes just require a Taylor Swift song, amirite?

Your hormone monster would like a word with you.
Florence Pugh, Miley Cyrus, Eugene Levy and Isabella Rossellini will guest star in the Season 2 of Netflix’s bawdy animated series “Human Resources,” the show that follows Netflix’s equally raunchy adult animation series “Big Mouth.” The new season has 10 episodes and is set to premiere on June 9.

Zoë Kravitz is taking a shot at Hulu’s on-screen diversity record over the cancellation of her series, High Fidelity, after one season.
In a response to fellow actress Tessa Thompson’s reaction to Kravitz’s Instagram post on the cancellation, Kravitz wrote, “At least hulu has a ton of other shows starring women of color we can watch. oh wait.”
While Hulu has recently added such series as Wu-Tang: An American Saga, featuring a predominantly Black cast, Ramy Youssef’s Ramy, and Love, Victor, with a Latinx title character, the leads in those series are all male.
Kravitz also received support from screenwriter and actor Lena Waithe, who wrote, “Nooooooo!!! I rarely find shows that genuinely impress me. This one did. I told you how much I loved this show. And I still do. This one definitely deserved another season.”
Questlove, the drummer of The Roots, added his sentiments on the cancellation.

Hulu has opted against a second season of its “High Fidelity” remake, canceling the Zoe Kravitz-led series after only one season.

“High Fidelity” starring Zoe Kravitz has been canceled by Hulu after one season, Variety has confirmed.
The series was a gender-bending, modern reimagining of the 2000 film starring John Cusack, with Kravitz playing his role. She starred as Rob, a pop culture-obsessed owner of a record store. Jake Lacy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and David H. Holmes rounded out the cast of the lone season, which was critically praised.
The TV series was created by Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, who executive produced with Kravitz and Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg from Midnight Radio.
Originally ordered to series more than two years ago, “High Fidelity” was initially being developed as a Disney Plus show. However, it moved to Hulu in April 2019 after Disney took control of the competing streaming site. The adult themes in the series made it a better fit for Hulu than the typically PG-focused, family-friendly shows on Disney Plus.

High Fidelity, starring and executive produced by Zoë Kravitz, will not be getting a second season on Hulu. I hear the cast and production team of the series, a reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 John Cusack movie, were notified of the cancellation today.
The decision was not easy and came after lengthy deliberations, I hear. The show, which has been well received by critics and is headlined by a big star with a massive following in Kravitz, had internal support at Hulu, whose brass took extra time to mull a potential renewal, with sibling ABC Signature extending the options on the cast by a month to accommodate that.
In the end, the streamer opted not to proceed with a second season. Finding another home for the show is considered a long shot, I hear.

When Jake Lacy was offered the role of Clyde, the on-again off-again love interest of the show’s main character on Hulu’s “High Fidelity,” he asked the show’s producers how his character might be more than just “wallpaper.” After often playing nice guys and boyfriends in film and on TV, Lacy wanted to do more than the typical cardboard-cutout love interest trope often seen on romantic comedies.
“Often the parts that I have played are in a lot of ways a character that completes somebody else’s arc,” he explains. “Sometimes those characters are not fleshed out as well because their part of the story is to assist someone else’s narrative.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lacy above.

Variety’s new series, “Hollywood How-To,” will tackle all things writing, with broader conversations about everything from crafting characters to navigating the writer’s room. The second chapter — “Developing a Character” — targets creating or adapting a character for your script.
“Character, character, character!”
“Watchmen” showrunner Damon Lindelof thinks if you repeat the word three times, “we can express exactly how important it is” to a great script. “It’s really the whole ball of wax,” he says.
So how does one invent interesting and layered characters? Variety quizzed Hollywood creators, including Susannah Grant (“Unbelievable”), Janet Mock (“Pose”), Lindelof (“Watchmen”), Robin Thede (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”), Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Someone Great”) and Sarah Kucserka (“High Fidelity”) in hopes of learning their tricks to constructing complex creatures.
“When it comes to describing a character, I always think of the question, ‘How will we know?'” explains “Erin Brockovich” and “Ever After” screenwriter Grant.

“It’s a story that always resonated very deeply with us where you’re an adult but you’re still struggling to get it right,” reveals Sarah Kucserka, co-creator and showrunner (alongside frequent collaborator Veronica West) of why she decided to re-imagine the classic “High Fidelity” for a new audience on Hulu. “I thought it was really awesome,” reveals Da’Vine Joy Randolph about bringing something new to her role on the latest “High Fidelity” adaptation, which is now available on Hulu. [Note: The following contains music-based spoilers for Season 1 of “High Fidelity.”]
It would have been very easy for the Hulu adaptation of “High Fidelity” to stick to a narrow set of musical ideas to help tell its story. But at the end of the show’s opening season, not only did series co-creators Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka look back on a show that had stretched its musical taste in a number of different directions, it had done so on a global scale.
“These people sit in a record store all day every day. They’re listening to everything. To make it feel like there’s one genre of music or, or one time period of music that is all that we’ve listened to, would feel inauthentic,” West told IndieWire. “It was very cool that at the end of the season, we had a song from every single continent.”

Can a TV series adaptation of a film based on a book reignite the same sparks as its source material? With a lead as strong as Zoë Kravitz, the answer would seem to be yes.
Hulu’s High Fidelity series released on Friday (all 10 episodes) and it’s the perfect counter-programming for a month filled with candy hearts and mushy rom-coms. Developed for TV by Bull‘s Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, with Questlove on as an executive music producer (the music’s obviously dope), the series tells the story of Rob (played by Kravitz), a record store owner and...

The TV world is on the verge of Peak Fourth-Wall Break. As with any trend in storytelling devices, there are effective uses and there are gimmicky uses and there are uses that feel like a last-minute add-on. But what really makes the moments work where a character drops all pretense and looks right down the barrel of a camera depends on who’s doing it.
“High Fidelity” has Zoë Kravitz, and it’s one main reason why the new Hulu series, the latest adaptation of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel, does more to earn that protagonist/audience connection than merely following in the footsteps of the 2000 Stephen Frears film. Kravitz takes the mantle of lovelorn record store owner dutifully reliving past romantic failures and anchors a new spin on a familiar story. Rather than have this part of the show feel staid and obligatory, her natural asides keep this 10-episode season a smooth,...

Chicago – “High Fidelity” is back! The iconic 2000 film, which was set in Chicago, is being rebooted as a Hulu series featuring Zoë Kravitz. Although the new series is centered in Brooklyn, Chicago’s Reckless Records – the 1379 North Milwaukee location in Wicker Park – will participate in a special “Pop Up” that will celebrate the series and its roots, from 1-7pm, Thursday-Saturday, February 13th-15th, 2020.
To introduce the updated series – which is available at Hulu for download on Valentine’s Day 2020 – Reckless Records will be giving away “High Fidelity” LPs, T-shirts, hats, totes, buttons and more during the event days. Attendees can also unlock shareable assets at the Hulu/Spotify “Swipe to Spin Your Love Anthem” kiosk. And Hulu will match record sales over the three days and donate the funds to the music education non-profit Little Kids Rock, a program with a thousand-strong network of grades K-12 teachers across 45 states,...

Rob, the record-store-owning hero of Nick Hornby’s classic novel High Fidelity, has strong opinions on many musical subjects, particularly the making and deployment of a great mixtape. He has rules about what kinds of songs to use, in what order, and believes that structuring the playlist just the right way says more about who he is and what he cares about than anything he could say with his own words.
In the 25 years since the book was published, Hornby’s words have been used and reinterpreted plenty. There was the 2000 High Fidelity film,...

Hulu’s updated version of the 2000 John Cusack-led, Stephen Frears-helmed, Nick Hornby-authored classic “High Fidelity” is the type of show that can — unironically — play the perfect song for every moment. And the team brought in to oversee that very delicate process was Manish Raval, Tom Wolfe and Alison Rosenfeld. The three veteran music supervisors who make up the core of a boutique music supervision and editing company called Aperture Music (founded by Raval and Wolfe over 20 years ago) have worked together on films as varied as the Oscar-winning “Green Book” and the rom-com “Trainwreck,” and TV shows like “Girls” (for which they were Emmy-nominated) and AMC’s “Preacher.” Because of their eclectic library of projects, it would seem that they were the perfect pick for a new show — created by Sarah Kucserka and Veronica West and starring Zoë Kravitz as the unlucky-in-love Brooklyn record shop owner Rob...
