Maddie Dyer and Rachel Griffiths.
After bonding on Ride Like a Girl, Rachel Griffiths and emerging writer-director Madeleine Dyer are jointly developing a TV comedy series based on a prominent Australian actor.
Describing Rachel’s concept as a new age, male version of Eliza Dolittle, Dyer says the plot will follow the actor as he learns to be ‘woke’ in how he relates to women and conducts himself in the current social climate.
They envisage an Extras-style series where actors and celebrities will play versions of themselves and are still in discussions with the actor about his participation.
Dyer spent five months with Griffiths on a Screen Australia-funded director’s attachment and director’s assistant on pre-production and principle shoot of the Michelle Payne biopic starring Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill.
That collaboration prompted Griffiths to laud Dyer as a “sister zeitgeist hunter” during her Hector Crawford memorial lecture at Screen Forever.

Short film ‘Oddlands’, which is being developed into a six-part series. (Photo: Georgina Savage)
Screen Australia has announced $300,000 of story development funding for six features, four TV dramas and two online series.
The slate includes feature film Memoir of a Snail from Oscar-winner Adam Elliot; Aleph, a science-fiction series from Porchlight Films about a mother who faces the unthinkable decision of saving her daughter or humanity; and online dark comedy Plushed, which explores mental illness through the eyes of a toy.
This is the the second round of funding announced since Screen Australia’s changes to development funding guidelines last July. Recently the agency has made further clarifications to the guidelines to improve the application process, which include increasing the pitch video length to up to four minutes, adding budget level limits to more clearly differentiate the Generate and Premium funds adding an opportunity to provide a paragraph synopsis to a proof of concept.

"Wilfred," FX's quirky comedy about a depressive young man named Ryan (Elijah Wood) and the titular canine that he and only he sees as a grumpy Australian guy (Jason Gann) in a dog suit, will return for a third season on Thursday, June 20th. The show will kick off with back-to-back episodes but without "Louie," with which it was paired last year, as Louis C.K.'s series is taking the year off. The change doesn't seem likely to affect "Wilfred" much -- though "Louie" gets more critical attention, "Wilfred" actually slightly outpaced it in ratings last year. Read More: Does 'Wilfred' Have the Best Guest Star Roles on Television? "Wilfred" is an adaptation of an Australian series that was created by Gann alongside Tony Rogers and Adam Zwar, and also features Fiona Gubelmann as Jenna, Ryan's neighbor and Wilfred's owner, and Dorian Brown as Kristen, Ryan's uptight sister.

Price comparison site iSelect has launched a trio of new TV ads – one mocking advertisers ambushing the Olympics.
“Every four years it’s the same story. Companies that have nothing to do with the Games jumping on the bandwagon,” says Mr iSelect in the ad, played by actor Jason Geary.
The ad premiered during Nine’s coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony.
The second of the batch, created by Ajf Partnership Melbourne and directed by Tony Rogers, suggests that it can be cheaper for Australians to have health insurance than not, in a school-yard style pitting of nerds versus cool kids.
The third spot sees Mr iSelect explain how iSelect finds the right health insurance to his apprentice Josh in the iSelect canteen by eating Josh’s chips.
The ads come just days after iSelect’s Cmo David May was announced as the CEO of national rugby league franchise the Gold Coast Titans.

This summer Tropfest arrives in the U.S. beginning with a weekend of activities at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, June 1-3, celebrating Tropfest’s 20th birthday and featuring an “All Star Competition” hosted by Rob Corddry.
Three weeks later, Tropfest New York will present a short film competition as the centerpiece for a weekend long event.

Hugh Jackman will host Tropfest New York, a competition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the world’s largest short-film festival. “Knowing that Tropfest has opened doors for brilliant filmmakers, actors, and others for the past 20 years, I’m proud to be a part of the festival as it expands its reach to the U.S. and brings its competition to New York,” said Jackman in a statement. “As a mecca of the arts, New York is a perfect host for a festival that empowers creative minds to try their hand at filmmaking.”

Wilfred: Seasons 1 And 2
Stars: Jason Gann, Adam Zwar, Cindy Waddingham | Directed by Tony Rogers
Having pets can sometimes be a mystery, the looks they give as you walk past or even the looks they give as you try to get them to do as they are told. Imagine you could understand what your pet was thinking, that they spoke to you and let you know in a foul mouthed tirade of insults about everything you do. Hell imagine if the pet was a man in a dog suit who wants to undermine everything you do while getting high all the time. That would be life according to Wilfred.
When Adam stays over the first night at his girlfriend’s house little did he know he’d be meeting a guy in a dog suit, Wilfred. To everybody else Wilfred is just a normal dog but to Adam he’s...

“Wilfred was rejected by every television network twice,” Tony Rogers, director of the Renegade Film’s sitcom tells Encore. “I don’t know how many DVDs with dog collars we sent out, minimum of a hundred.”
Tonight the American version of the show, starring Jason Gann back in the dog suit (Aussie accent intact) and The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood as his neighbour Ryan, airs on Eleven.
The Australian version, created and written by Gann and fellow actor Adam Zwar originally as a short film in 2002 for Tropfest, was eventually picked up by Matt Campbell at Sbs and the first series aired in 2007. Co-Executive Producer of Renegade, Joe Connor (#30 in Encore’s Power 50) says smugly “Now it’s done two seasons here and 13 episodes in the Us.” Not to mention the four AFIs the Australian version has won.

Wilfred is set to air on FX this Thursday at 10 pm. The cast incldues Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gublemann and a host of other cameos from actors like Chris Klein, Ethan Suplee and Rashida Jones. show is based on Gann's Australian hit show. Wood will play a regular guy named Ryan to Gann’s Wilfred, a mixed breed dog who is part Labrador retriever and “part Russell Crowe on a bender,” said David Zuckerman, who wrote the adapted pilot script and serves as executive producer.
I recently had the chance to interview Wood and Gann about the series. Wilfred is the first TV role for Wood. Here is what he had to say when asked how he chose the role:
I actually don’t get offered a lot of TV roles. I read a few scripts, mainly dramas. I was just interested in taking a look at television because...

As another possible victim of the Kensington Avenue Strangler is discovered, The Daily Beast's Jeff Deeney and Gregory Gilderman talk to the women of the city's notorious neighborhood about living with addiction, prostitution, and fear of a serial killer.
A fresh wave of fear chilled Philadelphia's Kensington Avenue over the weekend, when 22-year-old Allison Edwards was found strangled in an apartment in the nearby Juniata Park neighborhood. The police have yet to confirm a connection between Edwards' death and those of confirmed Kensington Avenue Strangler victims Nicole Piacentini and Elaine Goldberg, but the similarities are enough to rekindle concerns of a serial killer stalking women in North Philadelphia.

The victims are far from random: They are the cocaine and heroin addicts who score on the drug corners near Kensington Avenue, known as "the stroll," and risk their lives on "walking...

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

The American pay-tv network FX has ordered a pilot for a Us version of Renegade Films’ cult comedy Wilfred, starring the original Wilfred Jason Gann.
“We don’t expect that the Us version will adhere slavishly to the Australian one, however the partnership was carefully made, considering who would better retain the essence of Wilfred,” Renegade executive producer Joe Connor told Encore.
David Zuckerman (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Family Guy, American Dad) will serve as executive producer alongside Us production company Prospect Park and Melbourne’s Renegade Films. Gann will serve as co-executive producer.
“We are fully aware of the fact that this will be an adaptation for American audiences,” explained Connor. “We made a brilliant Australian show for an Australian audience and we are confident that our American partners will deliver a brilliant American version that maintains the essential elements of the original.”

Fook and Konkol chat up a couple Chicago characters -- Tony Rogers and Mike Starcevich -- who aim to rustle up cash for prostate and testicular cancer research with a music video that's going viral on YouTube. Rogers' song "Mustache Rides" is a nod to Movember, an international charity that gets men to grow mustaches for donations (scroll down to watch the video). What bars would draw the most business if the White Sox built a entertainment district next door? The guys have some ideas. Plus, Mayor Daley speaks cryptically on a downtown casino. We translate. And a hilarious round of Speed Score. Be sure to check out Keeping Score in Chicago for more information and previous episodes. ...

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.
