In this edition of THR Frontrunners, Girls5Eva creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino and stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips and Paula Pell joined The Hollywood Reporter‘s Tyler Coates for a conversation about the third season of the Netflix comedy series at a live event hosted by the San Vincente Bungalows in Los Angeles.
“It was heavenly,” said Pell about the streamer picking up the series — the first two seasons of which aired on Peacock — for its third season. “It’s like art imitating life: Our characters have second chances.”
Scardino added that a lot of the comedy, which follows the exploits of a turn-of-the-millennium girl group who are thrust back into the spotlight decades later when a Gen-z rapper samples their pop hit, is sparked from the four stars’ incredible bond both on- and off-camera. “They have a joke that I have weekly meetings with their therapists,...

The Sudanese drama Goodbye Julia is continuing its impressive awards run, earning the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature over the weekend at the Sonoma International Film Festival in California.
Mohamed Kordofani directed the story set in the context of the secessionist movement that led to the establishment of the independent nation of South Sudan in 2011.
“We commend the festival for its impressive selection of narrative features and unanimously select Goodbye Julia as the best film,” jurors wrote. “An outstanding first feature from Mohamed Kordofani, anchored by two stellar performances from Eiman Yousif and Siran Riak, Goodbye Julia provides a glimpse into a culture and region that’s underrepresented and underexplored in contemporary cinema.”
The jury, comprised of Rosa Bosch (Begin Again Films), Tyler Coates (The Hollywood Reporter), Rebecca Fisher (Magnolia Pictures), Jason Hellerstein (Sideshow), and Julie Huntsinger (Telluride Film Festival), awarded a Special Mention to Hesitation Wound, describing...

The 27th Sonoma International Film Festival (March 20-24), as always, leaned into wine and food with the sold-out opening night U.S. premiere of Thomas Napper’s “Widow Clicquot” (Vertical Entertainment), starring Haley Bennett as the woman who saves the legendary winemaker’s legacy. The wine country film festival drew its highest audience attendance to date with a robust film slate programmed by artistic director Carl Spence (working with Executive Director Ginny Krieger), in his second year, including upcoming specialty fare like Luc Besson’s “DogMan” (Briarcliff Entertainment) starring Caleb Landry Jones in an incendiary performance, and Sony Pictures Classics’ raucous comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” starring Olivia Colman, along with a smattering of yummy wine and food events.
The five-day festival curated by Spence along with senior programmers Amanda Salazar and Ken Jacobson, showcased more than 100 films. Twenty-five countries were represented in this year’s lineup of 43 narrative features, 16 documentary features,...

Nonprofit media company Shine Global celebrated its second annual Children’s Resilience in Film Awards at Paramount Studios on Tuesday night. Recognizing films and filmmakers around the world that highlight the resilience and strength of children in the face of adversities such as poverty, violence, illness and discrimination, the awards honored documentary Name Me Lawand with the event’s grand prize of $15,000.
Directed by Edward Lovelace, Name Me Lawand follows a deaf Kurdish boy’s emotional journey toward discovering how to express himself using British Sign Language, depicting the power of communication and community.
“This award is for Lawand — for his bravery, his determination in getting his message out to the world. His message is a beautiful one, which guided the entire filmmaking process,” said Lovelace in a written acceptance speech read by cinematographer Lol Crawley. “We as filmmakers have learned so much just by watching and listening to these...

The Patient (FX) The Patient
Most episodes of FX’s The Patient stick with the perspective of Steve Carell’s Alan Strauss, a therapist held captive by a serial killer portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. But in the seventh episode, “Kaddish,” the camera zooms out. As Alan says the Jewish prayer of mourning for both his dead wife and himself, director Gwyneth Horder-Payton photographs Carell through a rain-stained window in the basement room where he’s imprisoned.
“It just felt like the time to pull back the cameras and observe this human being in his own misery,” says executive producer Chris Long.
Backlit by light pouring in through glass bricks, Carell stands solemnly holding a piece of paper his captor printed out for him with the words of the kaddish. It’s an emotionally fraught moment, but Long and creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields thought it best to leave the character in his loneliness.

On April 27, 2023, former Cincinnati mayor and longtime talk show host Jerry Springer passed away. He was 79. The man led a long and textured life with many acts. As a boy, he fled England as it was being bombed by the Nazis. He came to the United States and began studying law, eventually becoming a Doctor of Jurisprudence. He was a campaign adviser for John F. Kennedy, and practiced law in Cincinnati. In 1971, he sat on the Cincinnati city council, but was infamously kicked off in 1974 for a sex scandal. Springer had been candid about the scandal over the following years, and even laughed at himself a little bit for using a personal check to pay a sex worker.
This didn't stymie his career, and he became the mayor of Cincinnati in 1978. It wouldn't be until 1991 that Springer, having accrued some broadcasting experience, would become a talk show host. "Jerry Springer" began innocently enough,...

SAG Awards Noms: Embracing Ensembles
Two films dominated the SAG Award nominations, both earning nods for the cast as an acting collective and individual nods for their performers.
In an awards season where certain nominees seem to be Everything Everywhere All at Once, the announcement of this year’s SAG contenders didn’t offer too many surprises, and indeed seemed to solidify the key favorites as Oscar voting gets underway.
With vital wins at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, A24’s Everything Everywhere may be proving itself to be the film to beat. It netted five nods at the SAGs, including best cast, lead actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and supporting actresses Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu.
But Searchlight’s The Banshees of Inisherin tied Everything Everywhere‘s haul: Besides best cast, lead actor Colin Farrell (a Globe winner) earned a nod, as did supporting players Kerry Condon,...

“One thing I can say is that biopics, or ideas [for them], have come to me a bit. But I’ve never been about doing a biopic, per se,” Luhrmann explained about the incarnation of the idea for his film. “I’m a great aficionado of the way Shakespeare takes a historical figure, Richard the III or something, and explores a larger idea while revealing the humanity of the character. The modern version of that I often think of as Amadeus. I really wasn’t into Mozart back then, however 100 years ago that was. But that incredible story, Salieri and Mozart, is about jealousy.”
