“World of Dance” ended its fourth season on Wednesday night, August 12, and Mdc 3 made history as the first contemporary dancers to win the show after three straight seasons of hip-hop/street performers taking the grand prize. They had the judges’ favorite routine on the final night of the competition, but what were the best routines of the whole season? Now that we’ve seen every performance from every contestant this year, scroll down for my take on the best of the best routines the show had to offer this summer. Watch those performances, and let us know if you agree below in the comments or here in our forums.

Jefferson y Adrianita were so good on “World of Dance” that they earned an Emmy nomination for Best Choreography after just two of their performances had aired on the NBC competition series. And they made history as the first Latin dance duo to advance to the World Final. So how did they do on the final night of the competition? Watch their last routine above to find out.

When the dust settled on the “World of Dance” stage, the winners of the competition were the contemporary trio Mdc 3. We predicted they would prevail going into the World Final on Wednesday night, August 12, but that doesn’t change the fact that their victory was historic. They’re the first contemporary dancers to win the show following three straight victories for hip-hop dance acts. Watch the championship performance that clinched it for them above, and scroll down to see the three other routines that got them there.

Mdc 3 made a strong first impression during the Qualifiers. We’ve seen a lot of contemporary acts on the show before, but usually soloists, duos or large groups. Having three members made the partnering between them unique, and they used that to their advantage, telling the story of a love triangle.

World of Dance‘s Season 4 finale got off to a strange start on Wednesday: The episode was filmed just as gatherings were starting to shut down as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, so the finale was shot without a studio audience, judge/EP Jennifer Lopez explained at the top of the hour. She then reassured viewers that “a dancer performs just as hard for three people as they do for 300.” While that may be true, not having the audience energy definitely gave the finale a different feel.

“World of Dance” is down to its final four contestants heading into tonight’s season four finale: salsa duo Jefferson y Adrianita, tutting trio Geometrie Variable, fusion dance crew Oxygen and contemporary trio Mdc 3. So who deserves to win? The series is pre-taped, and results are decided solely by judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo, but we asked our readers who they’d vote for if they had a say. Scroll down for our complete poll results.
Tonight’s season finale looks pretty wide open, as opposed to last year when The Kings seemed like strong front-runners from the very first round. Consistent with that, no one in this season’s final four got a majority of the vote from the fans we polled, but the most support went to Mdc 3, who also happen to be the only Junior Division act to reach the finale; their three rivals are age 18 and over.

Going into Tuesday night’s “Semi-Finals 2” on “World of Dance,” the bar was set extremely high, but Jake and Chau cleared it and then some. So it was a bit of a surprise at the end of the night when the contemporary duo didn’t qualify for the World Final. They were outscored by Mdc 3 and Oxygen, so they were eliminated from the competition. But they had higher scores than the two teams that advanced to the final round last week, Jefferson y Adrianita and Geometrie Variable. Were Jake and Chau robbed of a spot? Many of our readers thought so.

The last time we saw Oxygen on “World of Dance” they actually made the judges mad. They lost to Geometrie Variable during the Duels, but then they came back with a redemption round performance so good the judges were baffled as to why they didn’t dance like that the first time. So going into the Semi-Finals they had a lot to prove. With a million dollars on the line, now is no time for holding back. So did they show the judges they belonged in the World Final? “World of Dance” contemporary duo Jake and Chau came out early in “The Semi-Finals 2” and did something special. They gave Jennifer Lopez goosies. Then when the judges filled out their scorecards, they did something else special: they scored higher than any Semi-Finals performers up to that point, including the two acts that had advanced to the World Final last week, Jefferson y Adrianita and Geometrie Variable. So the last remarkable thing that happened was kinda heartbreaking: they didn’t make the World Final. Were they robbed? Watch their routine above and decide for yourself.
I admittedly had Jake and Chau pegged as underdogs after the Duels. “World of Dance” has narrowed the field to the very best performers of the season, but there are only four slots available in the World Final. Fans have been placing their bets here in our predictions center. We’ve combined those forecasts to calculate our official racetrack odds for tonight’s show.
The six acts vying for the last two slots include three from the Junior Division (under age 18) and three from the Upper Division (age 18 and up). From the child and teen set we’ve got hip-hop duo Bailey and Kida, contemporary trio Mdc 3 and contemporary soloist Keagan Capps. “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant-turned-choreographer Travis Wall earned his 10th Emmy nomination this year for the Fox competition series. That puts him within striking distance of not one but two Emmy records. His nominated “Sign of the Times” routine tackled America’s gun violence epidemic in emotional fashion. Watch it above.

Now Wall stands alone in second place in the record books. Only one other person has been nominated in this category more times: the legendary Debbie Allen with 11 bids. So Wall just needs one more to share her all-time record.
But that’s not all.

The Upper Division team Oxygen led our early “World of Dance” predictions for who would win the million-dollar grand prize at the end of the season, but the balance of power has wildly shifted in our odds since the Junior Division dancers started their Duels on July 21. Now the contemporary trio Mdc 3 are the front-runners to win according to the combined predictions of fans who have been making their forecasts every week here in our predictions center.
The members of Mdc 3 — two girls and a guy — impressed the judges during the Qualifiers round with a routine that told the story of a contentious love triangle. Judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo consistently praise routines with a clear narrative arc and emotional intent, so the trio savvily picked up right where they left off during the Duels — literally. They began this routine in exactly the positions they ended the first one in.

Ballet dancers Styles and Emma are the front-runners to win the show with leading odds of 82/25. But how could that be? After all, they just lost their head-to-head against Kurtis Sprung during the Duels, which means they were eliminated. However, guest judge Stephen “Twitch” Boss will have the chance to choose two losing acts from the Duels for a redemption...

For the Duels this season on “World of Dance,” the contestants don’t decide who they go up against in head-to-head dance combat. The judges choose for them, and to start things out on Tuesday night the judges arranged a Latin dance-off between salsa performers Jefferson y Adrianita and fellow Latin ballroom couple Luca and Alessandra. So were Jefferson y Adrianita able to withstand the pressure? Watch their routine above to see for yourself.
Jefferson y Adrianita should be used to pressure. After all, they were the very first performance in the very first episode of this season’s Qualifiers, so they had to bring it right out of the gate. And they did it again. As soon as their performance to “El Rey Del Timbal” by Tito Puente ended, guest judge Stephen “Twitch” Boss warmed his hands over the stage they just set on fire. “That was pretty amazing,...

‘World of Dance’ recap: Who survived the head-to-head battles in ‘The Duels 1’? [Updating Live Blog]
Let’s get ready to rumba! “World of Dance” put this season’s prospective contestants through Qualifiers and then a brand new Callbacks round for acts that didn’t quite pass the muster with their initial performances. So with all the dancers already put through their paces once or twice, it was time for the Duels to narrow down the field. Who survived their head-to-head match-ups, and who had to exit stage right? Scroll down for our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The Duels are a single-elimination round, so half of the contestants who survived the Qualifiers and Callbacks will be eliminated when all is said and done. In this round, one act faces off against another in a dance battle. The better performance advances to the next round, and the other act is sent packing — simple as that. But this season, the Duels are a little different.

The Qualifiers and Callbacks are over on “World of Dance,” so it’s time to start the Duels tonight on June 30. But just like the format of the Qualifiers was a little different this year, so are the Duels. This time, instead of choosing their own opponents, the dancers won’t know who they’re up against until they get out onto the stage. So how do Latin ballroom duo Luca and Alessandra perform against salsa couple Jefferson y Adrianita? Watch their performance above and find out.
“Wow,” Jennifer Lopez tells them after their routine. “You guys are two of the best performers, I think, in the competition … They’re, like, winking at me, they’re winking at Ne-Yo. They have to feel so much comfort up there to do stuff like that.” Derek Hough admired the “ooze” of the sensuality they brought to their hip action and feet action.

“World of Dance” returned for its fourth season last week with some new twists and format changes, including surprising the contestants during their warehouse auditions. But the first day’s performers weren’t thrown off by the presence of Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo crashing their preliminary tryouts. So how did the next group handle it during “The Qualifiers 2”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
This year’s Qualifiers diverge from previous seasons not just in having the judges evaluate dancers at the warehouse set. There’s also a different judging system. Instead of scoring performances from 0 to 100, the judges look at an act and simply tell them yes to send them through to the next round, the Duels, or no to send them packing. There’s a third option too: a call-back for acts that almost pass muster but...

World of Dance is shaking up its format: The NBC competition series returned for Season 4 on Tuesday with a couple of tweaks.
In the first Qualifiers episode, the contestants think they’re about to audition one final time for producers in a warehouse, but when they step through the door, they’re greeted by judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo. Instead of making their debut before the trio and viewers on the World of Dance stage, the dancers must now perform under pressure and earn their way onto the stage. And since they had no idea they were about to dance for the judges,...

“I’m pretty excited for season four. We’re revamping the show in so many different ways it’s like the first season all over again,” says judge and executive producer Jennifer Lopez at the start of the premiere episode of “World of Dance,” which returns tonight at 10:00pm on NBC. You can watch the first 11 minutes in advance of tonight’s official premiere above.
The first big chance will be that “Qualifiers 1” will not be on the glitzy studio stage that the show regularly takes place in. “You’ve got to earn that big, beautiful stage,” Lopez explains. She and her fellow judges Ne-Yo and Derek Hough are surprising the contestants in the stripped-down warehouse where the contestants think they’ll be performing in their final producer auditions. After Hough surveys their new “dance dungeon,” Lopez says (half-jokingly?), “Bring in the first victim!”
