An Atlanta-area police department is facing national controversy after video was released earlier this week showing one of its officers telling a woman in a traffic stop last year, “We only shoot black people.”
At a Thursday news conference, the Cobb County, Georgia, police chief announced that the officer involved, Lt. Greg Abbott, would be terminated.
“There’s been a question about context in reference to the statements that were made,” Chief Mike Register told reporters. “In my opinion, I feel that no matter what context you try to take those comments in, the statements were inexcusable and inappropriate and...

Reelio has some new cash to help boost its business operations. The influencer marketing platform, which connects brands with digital stars for branded content initiatives, has closed a $5 million Series A round, backed by previous investors as well as a group of global investors.
Reelio will use this new influx of money to build out the brand’s match-making technology, as well as its salesforce and executive teams. Founded in 2012, the influencer marketing company previously raised over $3 million in seed money to launch in beta mode. Reelio’s previous investors include e.ventures and firms from the likes of Lorne Michaels, Phillipp Schindler, and Tremor Video founders Jason Glickman and Andrew Reis.
“Today, brands are aggressively investing in ways to connect with audiences through branded content, and while the influencer marketing space is very exciting for marketers, it can also be new and scary,” said Pete Borum, co-founder and CEO of Reelio,...

Happy birthday to Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954), one of the few jazz superstars of the past four decades to combine commercial success and critical plaudits. After paying his dues in Gary Burton's band (which he joined at age 19), Metheny put out his first album in 1976 and by the time of his third release two years later was gaining crossover radio play. Though the style of his eponymous band was smooth and tuneful, Metheny had a firm basis in jazz and straight-ahead guitarist gods such as Jim Hall (with whom he eventually recorded a fine duo album).
With success came the challenge of avoiding complacency, which Metheny has met masterfully with a wide-ranging series of albums in a variety of stylistic bags, from atonal skronk to mellow Brazilian, from thorny Ornette Coleman covers to mercurial bebop. Along the way he has lent his prestige to both respected elders (Hall, Burton, Coleman,...

I didn't have enough free time in 2014 to review nearly as many of last year's prolific output of fine jazz albums as I wanted to. Here's a small step toward catching up, plus two 2015 releases (Ligeti/McDonas, The Side Project Saxophone 4tet).
Tom Varner: Nine Surprises (Tom Varner Music)
Composer and French horn player Tom Varner is indeed full of surprises, and they are not confined to the suite of that name (which, surprisingly, has 15 movements). I was most surprised by the outburst of New Orleans jazz in the last piece on the CD, "Mele," which Varner calls "a Gil Evans-influenced variation on the harmonic structure of a pop Hawaiian Christmas song." In general the music here seems highly composed -- these are not heads with strings of solos -- but still allowing for improvisation. The soloists who make the biggest impression are trombonist David Marriott and, no surprise here,...

Our final show was a matinee and we had a good crowd with one exception. There was a special needs patron who kept screaming out things during the first act at the Most inopportune moments. Apparently he left or was subdued somehow during the second act as we finally had quiet in the house. To do such a difficult script with running commentary was Quite challenging. I had yet another high school friend in the audience as well as a dresser from the original Broadway company of Les Miz and a couple of Facebook friends and a student of mine from many years ago. All in all, I greeted many old friends here in Ft. Worth and made several new ones to boot, Ben Williams, Mongomery Sutton, Anthony Fortino, Zak Reynolds and so many others. Plus the whole backstage crew at Casa Manana was a delight. Who could ask as...

Casey Hussian Director and Ben Williams Oswald came to my apartment in New York to discuss the play, Oswald The Actual Interrogation. After a Very interesting chat, we ended up reading through the entire play which was very exciting and invigorating. I had been working on the script for a couple of months before this meeting since I'm the interrogator, the script is a real bear so I was very exciting to jump in with my coworkers. We were all terribly excited about the whole situation when that marvelous meeting concluded.

If you want to know about contemporary British jazz or prog, you go to Downtown Music Gallery, where between them Bruce Gallanter and Manny Maris are an encyclopedic repository of knowledge and infallible taste. So when on my most recent trip there, Bruce passed me a sampler called Who Is Phil Gibbs? and told me the titular guitarist would be playing a series of shows in NYC (including his USA debut), I played said disc as soon as I got home, and was immediately intrigued.
In its listing, Tony calls Phil Gibbs "a staunch free-improviser" and goes on to compare him to Derek Bailey, but that's just one facet of his multi-stylistic habits. Drawing from a variety of contexts, with recording dates ranging from 2000 to this year, the CD's eight tracks reveal a far more versatile musician than Tony suggests.
"The Sound of One Who Loves" is just Gibbs, apparently...

New York -- Tenor sax legend Sonny Rollins was a triple winner Wednesday at the annual Jazz Awards, garnering musician of the year honors for the second straight year.
Rollins also repeated as the top tenor saxophonist. His latest CD, "Road Shows, Vol. 2," consisting of live recordings from concerts in Japan and his September 2010 80th birthday concert in New York highlighted by a first-ever public performance with free jazz visionary and alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman, was chosen the year's best jazz recording.
"I was born with some talent for which I am grateful," Rollins said in a statement read from the stage at the Blue Note jazz club by emcee Josh Jackson, host of Wbgo's jazz music magazine "The Checkout."
"I copied and learned from my predecessors and I'm grateful to them, and I gratefully accept this award," said Rollins, who could not attend the ceremony because he was moving...

While the werewolf-vampire cold war wages on, the armies of Team Edward and Team Jacob have temporarily set aside their differences to come together to celebrate one momentous occasion: the premiere of "Eclipse"!
Earlier this week, Twilighters began camping out in the California sun outside of the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles where the third "Twilight" installment will premiere this Thursday.
"We've been here for three days, and we are braving the sun, which is kind of evil," Cherylyn from Littlerock, California, told MTV News on Tuesday. (Those of you not camping out can still get a great view of the red-carpet action when MTV News live-streams the premiere Thursday at 9:30 p.m. Et.)
