Star Trek: Section 31 Trailer: Michelle Yeoh Joins A Secret Starfleet Division In Discovery Spin-Off
Set phasers to Fun! After bagging a long overdue Oscar for her turn(s) as Evelyn in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh is swapping the multiverse to play her Star Trek: Discovery mirror universe character Emperor Philippa Georgiou once again in Olatunde Osunsanmi's Paramount+ original movie Star Trek: Section 31. Front-loaded with a playful warning for "misfit content", the first trailer for the movie — which is set to follow Yeoh's villainous warlord as she joins a black ops division of Starfleet — promises to bring a distinctly different vibe to the almost seventy-year-old sci-fi franchise. Check it out:
We told you the vibe was different! She’s a tyrant who “murdered her own people by the millions.” And when someone calls her a “bad bitch,” she just smiles and enjoys the attention.

The original movie features Yeoh reprising her role as Philippa Georgiou, a character she first played in Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season. She’s now tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets while facing the sins of her past.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is absolutely dangerous in the trailer for Olatunde Osunsanmi’s “Star Trek: Section 31.” In a clip shared at Comic-Con on Saturday, Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou flaunts her talent for evil — and struggles with becoming something else — as Beyoncé’s “Formation” plays in the background.
“Emperor philippa Georgiou,” Omari Hardwick intones, “you’re a tyrant who murdered her own people by the millions… the past always catches up with you.”
Elsewhere in the trailer, Kacey Rohl explains to Yeoh, “31 is Black Ops division. Spy work. Starfleet is here to make sure no one commits murder” and Sam Richardson admits, “We can’t trust you with our lives, but here we go.”
“Someone’s got to keep it lively… right?” Yeoh asks, feigning innocence.
The clip also gave fans the first look at Miku Martineau as the younger version of Philippa Georgiou.

The long-awaited first trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 is finally here, and it definitely brings a fresh vibe to the franchise.
Paramount+ revealed a two-minute look (below) at the Star Trek: Discovery spinoff movie, which stars Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
The show is about Georgiou joining a secret “black ops” division of Starfleet. From the official description, when “tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.”
The trailer strives for a more rebellious tone for the nearly 60-year-old Trek franchise, complete with contemporary music (the trailer is set to Beyoncé’s “Formation”), an onscreen “warning” from Starfleet about its “misfit content,” and title card graphics which break with Trek tradition. At one point an officer tells Georgiou that she’s there to keep her from murdering people, and the Emperor replies,...

Grab your magnifying glass, deerstalker hat, and pipe, fellow TV Fanatics, because a new Holmes-inspired show called Watson is coming to television screens everywhere as a midseason treat for the 2024-2025 broadcast schedule.
Interestingly, this will be the second CBS series to adapt the Sherlock stories, the first being Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson.
The upcoming series, Watson, won't take place in the same universe, but as it shares similar elements, it'll be an amazing new show for audiences who miss the 2012 series that ended after seven seasons in 2019.
Some viewers might find the premise a touch different from the usual murder mystery plot in a good Sherlock Holmes story, but don't worry -- we're here to tell you everything we know so far!

Exclusive: A month and a half after the painful cancellation of So Help Me Todd, main cast member Inga Schlingmann has been tapped as a series regular on another CBS procedural, the upcoming Watson, headlined by Morris Chestnut. That is both good news for So Help Me Todd fans, as it keeps a piece of the show on CBS, and bad news, since it makes the series’ end permanent. There was never a realistic chance but fans had been holding out hope that So Help Me Todd could find a home elsewhere.
Also set as a lead in Watson is Eve Harlow (The Night Agent). Both Schlingmann and Harlow are extending their relationship with Watson producer CBS Studios coming off So Help Me Todd and the final season of Star Trek: Discovery, respectively.
In addition to Chestnut, the two join a cast member from another CBS procedural, S.W.A.

Exclusive: Rochelle Aytes is leaving S.W.A.T. as a series regular. In a quick turnaround, she has joined another CBS procedural, the upcoming medical drama Watson headlined by Morris Chestnut.
In a surprising move, CBS last month renewed S.W.A.T. for an eighth season having previously canceled the show after six seasons before reversing that decision to pick up a seventh and final season. As new deals had to be made with the cast, Aytes, who plays Nichelle Carmichael, was not invited back as a series regular but the producers want to keep her in the S.W.A.T. universe as Hondo’s (Moore) wife and mother to their child, and the hope is that she will recur next season.
In a classic “when one door closes” situation, shortly after Aytes became available, she was approached for a series regular role on Watson, which is produced by CBS Studios.

Star Trek: Section 31 recently wrapped production, and Variety has the first look at Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou in the upcoming Paramount+ movie. The sprawling cover story (which is well worth a read) also spills on the surprising return of a character who hasn’t been seen in over thirty years.
The Star Trek: Section 31 first look features Michelle Yeoh as the morally dubious Georgiou having a word with someone with a few cybernetic enhancements. The last we saw of the character was on Star Trek: Discovery when she stepped through a portal to somewhere in the past. The exact timeframe remains unknown, but thanks to the addition of one particular Star Trek character, we may have a much better idea.

As seen in the photo above, filming has begun on "Star Trek: Section 31," a TV movie starring Michelle Yeoh as Empress Philippa Georgiou, the "evil" counterpart to the deceased Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh's character appeared in multiple episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," and exited the series when she was recruited into Section 31, the "Star Trek" equivalent of the CIA. Section 31, outfitted with badass black badges, engaged in shady dealings on Starfleet's behalf, subverting the organization's ideals when violence was needed.
A "Section 31" TV series was rumored to be in production as early as 2017 when Trekkies noticed that the call numbers of the U.S.S. Discovery were Ncc-1031. An official Yeoh-starring series was announced in 2018 and several episodes were written. Eventually, though, the series was developed into a single televised movie event.

Who is Dr. John Watson without Sherlock Holmes? CBS aims to find out as they have given a straight-to-series order to Watson, a drama series starring Morris Chestnut as the title character.
Set one year after the death of Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, Watson will see “Dr. John Watson resume his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though—Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century.“
Craig Sweeny created the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. He also has experience with the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as he served as a writer and executive producer on Elementary, which starred Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson.

CBS is sort of returning to the world of Sherlock Holmes.
The Paramount Global-backed broadcast network has handed out a series order for Watson, a medical drama revolving around Dr. John Watson a year after the death of his friend and partner, Sherlock Holmes. Morris Chestnut will star as Watson and exec produce the series, which was first put in development a year ago at the network.
“We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the center of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “Craig Sweeny’s bold new vision for the complex Dr. Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries.”

CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to Watson, from writer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios, for the 2024-25 broadcast season. Morris Chestnut is set to play the title role and executive produce the medical drama inspired by the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Last January, CBS ordered two drama pilots, Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston and Matlock starring Kathy Bates, as well as writers rooms for two medical drama projects, Watson and The Pact.
In anticipation of a series pickup, CBS and CBS Studios recently attached Chestnut as the lead and Larry Teng as director and executive producer of the first episode, paving the way to a formal greenlight.

Paramount+ announced earlier this week that Michelle Yeoh would reprise her role as Phillipa Georgiou from “Star Trek: Discovery” in a standalone movie event.
Production on the movie, titled “Star Trek: Section 31,” will begin later this year. The film will “follow Georgiou as she joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.”
“Section 31” was initially announced as a series back in 2019. But then the pandemic hit and Yeoh’s career trajectory changed thanks to a role in a movie called “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Last month, Yeoh won the Best Actress Oscar for portraying an immigrant mom struggling with her interpersonal relationships and her laundry business.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh – and yes, it feels great to write that – is finally ready to head back to the universe of Star Trek, albeit in a slightly different way. While the Trek franchise team at Paramount+ had been developing a series based around her Emperor Philippa Georgiou, the idea will now be turned into a "event movie" for the streaming service called Star Trek: Section 31.
As with the series, will see Georgiou – an alternate universe version of the Captain first seen in Star Trek: Discovery's initial episode – joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.
Section 31, a special intelligence service, was originally introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Georgiou was approached about the organisation while on the Klingon home world in a deleted scene from Season 1.

It's been a long time coming, but after years of rumors and false starts, one of the most highly-demanded "Star Trek" spinoffs is now set to become a reality ... but not quite as fans originally expected it.
Michelle Yeoh's Philippa Georgiou has long been the subject of reports that Paramount would be moving forward with a spin-off series focused on Section 31, the dark side of Starfleet dedicated to black ops and other morally dubious ventures that the shining light of exploration and pacifism could never be publicly involved with. Throughout the course of the "Star Trek: Discovery" streaming series, interest in a Georgiou-centric standalone show grew louder and louder, to the point that news first broke back in 2018 that the studio was, in fact, moving forward with the spin-off. Despite a subsequent update the next year, it eventually became clear that the project wasn't exactly a priority anymore.

This year’s Best Actress winner at the Academy Awards, Michelle Yeoh, has announced the first project of her post-Oscar career. She is going back to the future, reprising her role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou in “Star Trek: Section 31,” which a press release described as an Original Movie Event for Paramount +.
This is the first such project for the streamer that has multiple “Trek” properties going at different points in the timeline, like “Star Trek: Picard,” which brought back old favorites played by Sir Patrick Stewart, and Jonathan Frakes, “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” an “adult” animation from “Rick and Morty” alum Mike McMahan, and an “Original Series”-style prequel, “Strange New Worlds,” starring Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Celia Rose Gooding.

Paramount+ is officially moving forward on a “Star Trek: Section 31” project starring Michelle Yeoh, but it will now be an event film instead of a series, Variety has learned.
It was first reported that a Section 31 series with Yeoh was in development back in 2019. In the film, Yeoh will reprise the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou, whom she began playing during Season 1 of “Star Trek: Discovery.”
Per the official logline, “Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Rumors of a Yeoh-led Section 31 project began upon the conclusion of Season 1 of “Discovery,” after a deleted scene revealed Georgiou being approached by a member of the shadowy intelligence organization on the Klingon homeworld.

A new series based on Sherlock Holmes is in development... but there’s a catch.
Titled Watson, the new TV show will reportedly not feature the deerstalker-wearing detective as a character at all.
Instead, the programme will focus solely on the exploits of Holmes’ dutiful assistant, Dr John H Watson.
According to TV Line, Watson, which will air on the US network CBS, follows Watson in the aftermath of Sherlock Holmes’ death.
In the series, Holmes has been killed by his criminal nemesis, Professor James Moriarty.
The show will be written by Craig Sweeny, who has some history with the subject matter, having previously written on the the CBS series Elementary.
Running from 2012 to 2019, Elementary starred Johnny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as a gender-flipped Dr Watson. However, the new series will reportedly be entirely unrelated to this.
Deadline previously described the premise of the series as follows:...

CBS is adding two famed attorneys to its roster.
Matlock, one of television’s most iconic crime dramas, is getting a new life at CBS. The Paramount Global-backed broadcast network has handed out a pilot order for a new take on the former defense attorney formerly played by Andy Griffith. Kathy Bates will take on the role of Madeline Matlock.
Additionally, The Good Wife/The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King are returning to CBS with the third series in the franchise, Elsbeth, with star Carrie Preston set to reprise her role in the drama that has also received a pilot order at the broadcast network. These are the first two drama pilot orders for CBS and are being eyed for the 2023-24 broadcast season.
Additionally, CBS is looking toward the 2024-25 broadcast season with dramas The Pact (which stems from its overall deal with the NAACP) and Sherlock Holmes entry Watson.

The decline in broadcast pilots continues. CBS has ordered its fewest drama pilots ever in a pilot season: two. Also part of a trend, both are based on IP from established auspices and big-name talent already attached — Robert and Michelle King’s Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston, a police procedural spinoff of the Kings’ The Good Wife/Good Fight universe, and Matlock, a gender-swap reboot of the classic legal drama starring Kathy Bates, from Jennie Snyder Urman and Eric Christian Olsen.
Along with the two pilot orders for the 2023-24 season, CBS also ordered writers rooms for two medical drama projects — The Pact, from writer Marcus Dalzine and the NAACP/CBS Studios production venture; and Watson, from Craig Sweeny and Kapital — which are being put on track for potential straight-to-series orders targeting the following 2024-2025 season.

When executives at CBS Studios decided to dust off the not-too-distant IP of “The 4400,” a four-season drama about a group of people who were plucked from different places and time periods and returned at once, it was good news for Ariana Jackson.
Jackson wasn’t the first producer to tackle such a project — a previous attempt at a reboot was made in 2018 by Taylor Elmore and Craig Sweeny. But as a fan, she knew the intricacies of the original series, which premiered in 2004 on USA Network. Jackson teamed with Anna Fricke, who previously successfully rebooted “Walker, Texas Ranger,” to propel her version forward.
The CW ordered “4400” straight to series in February. It bows Oct. 25, with Sunil Nayar joining Jackson to serve as co-showrunner.
They key to cracking their version of the story, Jackson tells Variety, was not to worry about whether the original already tackled a particular piece of story.

There will be no second season for The Code. CBS has opted not to renew the military drama series from CBS TV Studios and Timberman-Beverly after a modestly rated first season that wrapped last night. Star Dana Delany revealed the series’ fate on Twitter. (You can read her message to fans below.)
CBS in May left undecided the fates of four drama series that premiered in midseason: sophomore Instinct, freshmen The Code and The Red Line and third-year Canadian import Ransom. All but Instinct have now been canceled.
In The Code, written by Limitless creator Craig Sweeny from a story by him and Craig Turk and directed by Marc Webb, the military’s brightest minds take on our country’s toughest challenges – inside the courtroom and out – where each attorney is trained as a prosecutor, a defense lawyer, an investigator, and a Marine.

Years ago, Jag was cancelled by NBC after one season, but then CBS picked it up, and it ran for an additional nine seasons, before ending in 2005. The Tiffany Network's NCIS franchise spun off from Jag and is still serving them well. Now they're trying a different take on the format with The Code TV show. Can it too pass muster with the CBS audience and Nielsen households? Will The Code be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

CBS’s latest procedural stays in what’s become the network’s very particular comfort zone: The world of military court. In the wake of the naval-justice franchise “NCIS” (itself a spinoff of long-ago CBS standby “Jag”), the network perhaps most closely adherent to formula has put together “The Code,” a deeply familiar-feeling product.
On “The Code,” lawyers within the Marine Corps take on cases — giddily trading off, from case to case and episode to episode — the roles of prosecutor and defender. This structure tends to give their work a fairly airless quality: Perhaps more like real lawyers than TV is used to depicting, these attorneys are motivated more by the desire to close out cases quickly and efficiently than by passionate advocacy for their clients. One episode sees a sentencing request agreed upon by “prosecutor” and “defender” over beers; they clink bottles after agreeing they’ll ask the judge for eight years.

While the arrival of a new season has implications on the weather, April in the TV world means that aspiring Emmys seekers have come once again to tower over everything else in their path. But meanwhile, while Fyc events ramp up and contenders start to emerge, there are plenty of series trying to make their mark amidst the awards chatter.
As is per tradition, we’ve collected some of the more notable series premieres for the month, stretching across cable, broadcast, and streaming. Not all are guaranteed to stay in the conversation for the rest of the year, but like the plant life that will flourish in the weeks to come, some of these might just be evergreen.

‘The 4400’ & ‘The L.A. Complex’ Reboots And ‘Good Christian Bitches’ Rolled To Next Season At the CW
Exclusive: The CW has officially wrapped its 2019 pilot pickups with six orders, and three high-profile projects, The 4400, The L.A. Complex and Good Christian Bitches, were not among those getting a green light but neither is dead. All three have been rolled to next season, which is something the CW President Mark Pedowitz does with IP he believes in.
In 2017, there also were two big-title projects that did not make the cut to pilot, Charmed and The Lost Boys. Both were rolled and subsequently made it to pilot — Charmed did it last season, when it was picked up to series and was recently renewed for a second season. It took another year, but The Lost Boys too nabbed a pilot order last month.
The reasons for The 4400, The L.A. Complex and Good Christian Bitches being rolled vary from project to project.

It’s kind of silly that Hollywood rarely takes chances on original concepts. In 2007 the USA Network series The 4400 aired its final episode. It was a decent series for its time, but now The CW wants to reboot it.
The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios, which produced the original series and the project is being developed by Taylor Elmore and Craig Sweeny. They will co-write the pilot for the reboot and executive produce, with Elmore set to serve as showrunner.
In the series, “over the course of recent history, four thousand four hundred young adults in their reproductive prime have gone missing all over the world. Some disappearances happened as recently as a few weeks ago, while others date as far back as the day the Soviets launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957. One day in 2019, all 4,400 show up at the sites of their original abductions. None...
