ABC has renewed “American Idol” for a fourth season.
The singing competition series, like the rest of the television industry, has faced production shutdowns due to the coronavirus. But instead of going off the air, the show has been airing episodes filmed remotely since April 26, with judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest, mentor Bobby Bones, and all top 20 contestants shooting their segments from home.
The Season 3 finale airs Sunday, May 17 at 8 p.m. Et, at which point viewers will first vote to narrow the talent pool down from seven to five and then later crown the winner.

“American Idol” wasn’t about to let the Covid-19 pandemic stop America from voting for the season 18 winner. The producers have sent the same set of camera equipment and lighting to each of the Top 20 contestants. Just as the artists are housebound, so are the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — who will weigh in with their thoughts live. You can have your say too by voting in the poll below.
The Top 20 will compete in a special episode slated to air on April 26. The Top 10 will perform on May 3 in the first of three live shows (all branded “Live Coast to Coast Feed”) hosted, as ever, by Ryan Seacrest. The season 18 “American Idol” winner will be crowned on the May 17 finale.
We were originally supposed to have six live shows, starting with a Top 14 on April 12. The Top 10 were to take to the stage on April...

Grace Leer had a more unusual journey into the Top 20 than her “American Idol” counterparts this season. The 28-year old who works in technology sales in Nashville, Tennessee had to win her spot with the first public vote, where she defeated fellow country artist Lauren Mascitti. Leer was one of 20 Season 18 finalists featured on the “American Idol” special, “This is Me” airing on April 12 and April 19 on ABC.
Besides being about music, “American Idol” is about people, their stories and their dreams. Host Ryan Seacrest narrates this deep dive into the contestants where we hear more personal stories, see highlights from their audition process and learn what it took for them to convince judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan to select them as finalists.
Leer competed on “American Juniors” when she was just 11 years old, but even then she impressed Seacrest, who also hosted that spin-off. “I think...

“Fix your screw-up, ‘American Idol!’ That was the reaction of Gold Derby user John Hamrick after ABC’s reality TV singing competition decided to pit two talented female country singers against one another and allow viewers to decide their fates.
For whatever reason, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan couldn’t choose amongst themselves whether tech saleswoman Grace Leer or registered nurse Lauren Mascitti should claim the final spot in the Top 20. Making it harder was how similar the two 28-year-olds who both hail from Nashville were to each other with their long lush hair and attractive eyes. They both dreamt of being performers since they were toddlers and Grace even competed 17 years ago on “American Juniors.”
See 51% of ‘American Idol’ voters think fan fave Eliza Catastrophe (‘Sardines’) was the right ‘kind of weird’ [Poll Results]
Where their paths diverge, however, was the difference in their approach to their music.

“The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart” dipped in ratings from last week’s lackluster debut, which didn’t do ABC much good on Monday.
NBC won primetime outright last night with its singing competition lineup. Fox finished second.
NBC was first in ratings with a 1.2 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 7.5 million, according to preliminary numbers. “The Voice” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. averaged a 1.4/7 and 9.1 million viewers. “Songland” at 10 received a 0.8/4 and 4.4 million viewers.

When we first met 19-year-old Francisco Martin from San Francisco during his “American Idol” audition in Sunriver, Oregon, he could barely speak to the judges let alone sing. Both Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan walked over to help the handsome lad calm his jitters. But once he settled down and strummed his rendition of “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers, it was clear that this guy was the real deal. Luke wrote down “winner” on a piece of paper while Katy Perry asked him, “Would you faint if I told you you were top 10.” Luke corrected her assessment: “I think you’re top five.”
Rogers, meanwhile, posted her reaction to Francisco’s version of her song on Twitter:

“American Idol” is no longer America’s No. 1 show in Sunday TV ratings — for one week, at least. For the first time this season, CBS’ “60 Minutes” topped the ABC singing competition among adults 18-49.
ABC still squeaked out a win in the key demo’s primetime averages. As per usual, CBS and its long-running newsmagazine program were first in terms of total viewers.
Last night, “American Idol” aired Part 2 of “This Is Me,” a contestant backstory special comprised of never-before-seen footage, which was created by ABC to help fill out the season amid production shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic. The show also revealed live whether Grace Leer or Lauren Mascitti made its Top 20. Sorry, Lauren.

On Sunday night, “American Idol” aired “This is Us” Part 2 special that showcased fan favorites like 16-year-old Broadway-style belter Claire Jolie Goodwin, Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader Kyle Tanguay and Courtney Timmons, who was plucked off the street by host Ryan Seacrest and was given an unofficial audition. As a result, her rendition of Andra Day‘s “Rise Up” racked up 68 million views online.
But the focus was mainly on sharing both seen and unseen performances of such Top 20 artists as Francisco Martin, Kimmy Gabriela, Faith Becnel, Dillon James, Aliana Jester, Louis Knight, Jovin Webb, DeWayne Crocker Jr. and Cyniah Elise.
However, most “American Idol” viewers were probably on pins and needles over which of the two female country artists — Grace Leer or Lauren Mascitti — who were vying to be the last finalist won the most fan votes to compete in the Top 20.
This talented twosome has quite a bit in common.

Following the Hawaii showcase for Season 18 of “American Idol,” Lauren Mascitti and Grace Leer were awaiting their fates when some explosive news arrived. Only one of them could advance to the Top 20, but judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan couldn’t make a decision. Instead they left it up to America to decide and the contestant moving forward was revealed on the second “This Is Me” episode airing April 19 on ABC.

In addition to solidifying this season’s Top 20, Sunday’s episode of American Idol also gave us a preview of how the live performances will look moving forward.

Though the big reveal wasn’t recorded live, the consistently clear video quality of Grace and Lauren’s home streams was still somewhat encouraging as we prepare to head into months of episodes filmed remotely.

The first part of “American Idol’s” special episode “This Is Me” not only delved deeper into the backgrounds of 10 of the singers in the Top 21. The two-hour show last Sunday also spotlighted some colorful fan favorites ranging from Gilberto Rivera, a New York City subway serenader who had a rather shiny-glittery fashion sense, to Alabama garbage man Douglas Kiker, who flashed a new set of teeth during his at-home update.
In a recent poll, we asked which of these seven unchosen hopefuls who still managed to win over viewers was your fave of the fan favorites? While judge Katy Perry thought Spokane, Washington, native Eliza Catastrophe was “wrong kind of weird” for the show, a rousing 51% disagreed. Perhaps it was the way the disarming Eliza engaged host Ryan Seacrest in a pun-off. Or perhaps it was how the catchy chorus of her original song, “Sardines,” got stuck in judge Luke Bryan‘s head.

Sorry, Lauren Mascitti and Grace Leer, but “American Idol” only has room for one of you in Season 18. Last week viewers were tasked with voting one of these aspiring country singers into the Top 20, and we’ll all find out who received the most votes when the second “This Is Me” episode airs Sunday, April 19 on ABC. Think of it as the first official vote results episode of the 2020 cycle. This will also serve as the last episode of “American Idol” before the live shows, which have been indefinitely delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The final contestant to make the Top 20 on season 18 of “American Idol” will be either Grace Leer or Lauren Mascitti. As Ryan Seacrest revealed at the end of the April 5 episode, viewers will get to decide which of these women moves on in the competition. Who do you want it to be? Cast your vote in our poll below and then sound off in the comments section with your thoughts.
Both of these contenders to win “American Idol” season 18 are 28 years old and now live in Nashville.
Grace hails from San Francisco and was a semi-finalist on the short-lived series “American Idol Juniors” when she was all of 11 in 2003. She is the frontwoman of a band that also includes her long-time pal Kyle Clouse, who accompanied her on guitar at her audition. For her showcase song, Grace went with an Aretha Franklin classic, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

“American Idol” revealed the Top 21 on the April 5 episode, which concluded the showcase section of the competition. In these shows taped in Hawaii weeks ago, the Top 40 were divided into two groups. The third of three episodes of “American Idol” showcasing Hollywood Week airs on March 23. Over the course of the three episodes devoted to Hollywood Week (the others aired last Monday and this Sunday) the contestants sing in three rounds: lines of 10, groups, and solos. The judges will winnow the list down to just 40 who will sing in a showcase set to air next Sunday and Monday.
Those contenders will be culled down to just half that number and that Top 20 will be judged on both solo performances and celebrity duets over the course of three episodes. Once the live playoffs of “American Idol” season 18 begin, you will be able to predict the outcome of each episode in our predictions center.

“Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, something happens that you never would have expected,” Luke Bryan eloquently stated atop Sunday’s American Idol. And dag-gummit, he was right.
Hollywood Week continued with yet another curveball for the remaining contestants: The time-honored (and long-dreaded) Group Round has been replaced by a Duet Round, leading to a frantic frenzy of pairings. Honestly, the stress of everyone having to choose a partner gave me flashbacks to gym class, where I wasn’t exactly anyone’s first choice for a dodgeball teammate. (Then again, find me a TV recapper who was.
