- Music Department
Richard Johnsen is a South African composer, music producer, and multi-instrumentalist based in London. Often infusing his work with improvisation and spontaneity, he draws from his background in contemporary classical music to offer a fresh, experimental approach to acoustic instruments, frequently tying them into a web of electronic soundscapes and textures. In 2020 and 2023, Johnsen was awarded Best Score at the Royal Wolf Film Festival. He also received a Best Score nomination at the Big Fridge Film Festival the following year. Most recently, his synth score to Danny Cotton's sci-fi thriller, Futurity Infinite, won Best Score at the 2024 Top Indie Film Awards. Outside of film, his collaborations include Tête à Tête Opera, the English National Ballet School, Frozen Light Theatre Group, Riverside Studios, Mo Phoenix, and Emmy-award-winner Hugh Wooldridge. Johnsen studied music at Durham University before pursuing composition under Dimitri Scarlato at the Royal College of Music.
