Christophe Gans’ retrofitted retelling of the classic “Beauty and the Beast” fairy tale opens in appropriate fashion: With a pair of wide-eyed youngsters being read a fable from a distractingly large storybook. That their narrator is played by Lea Seydoux is the first indication that the tale will have a happy ending — after all, she’s telling her own story, that of the warm-hearted beauty Belle and the misunderstood Beast she came to love (and ultimately save). But Gans isn’t especially concerned with the outcome this coupling, instead reveling in overwrought and often bloated storytelling, lush details and some of the year’s most unnerving CGI. In this “Beauty and Beast,” the happy ending can’t come soon enough.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Munich-based Production Company Berg Film has acquired the German remake rights to The Interview, a 2003 drama from murdered Dutch director Theo van Gogh. The film, about a failed political journalist who is forced by his editor to interview a soap actress, already is being remade in English by director-actor Steve Buscemi with Sienna Miller co-starring. The German version will feature Yvonne Catterfeld, one of Germany's top soap stars and a local pop-music sensation. Berg Film plans to begin shooting in January, for a tentative fall 2007 release. Buscemi's The Interview is in postproduction. Cinemavault Releasing International is handling worldwide rights to the feature.

COLOGNE, Germany -- RTL is pulling the plug on the German version of hit British live music format Top of The Pops after seven years, citing sinking ratings. Germany was one of the first foreign territories to pick up the BBC format, putting a local language version on air in 1998. Produced by German music specialists MME, the show's Cologne studio has featured live performances by some of the biggest names in pop music both internationally (Britney Spears, U2, Madonna) and local champs such as Wir sind Helden, Xavier Naidoo and Yvonne Catterfeld. But Top of The Pops was never a ratings hit for RTL and, despite a January re-launch, the show continues to under-perform, delivering less than 10% of the key 14-49 demographic. RTL plans to air the last edition of Top of The Pops on April 8. The British format is on air in 120 countries worldwide.
