Backdrop of Quando Rondo’s Concert Raises Eyebrows The recent concert by Quando Rondo has been steeped in controversy, largely due to the backdrop of events leading up to the performance. The rapper has been in the limelight for reasons beyond his music, particularly following the tragic death of fellow rapper King Von. The altercation that led to King Von’s passing involved Quando Rondo’s crew outside an Atlanta hookah lounge on November 6. Although Quando Rondo himself is not under investigation, he is undoubtedly feeling the repercussions. Quando Rondo has been the center of attention… following the killing of King Von,...

Earlier this month, bodycam footage of the aftermath of rapper and Lil Durk signee King Von’s November 2020 death reached the internet. One clip shows Atlanta Police patrolling outside the Monaco hookah lounge, where a dispute between Von and rapper Quando Rondo erupted into gunfire (charges against Rondo affiliate Lul Tim were reportedly dropped after police determined that Apd fired the fatal shot).

All week long, a culture war has been raging around country star Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town,” a turgid power ballad wrapped around an unsubtle warning to protesters and other outsiders: “Try that in a small town, see how far you make it down the road.” To many observers, that sounds uncomfortably close to the kind of threat that the Klan used to issue to civil rights activists, and that modern-day racists continue to spout today. The music video, which juxtaposes stock footage of Canadian protesters...

For Lil Durk, Almost Healed is yet another slick collection of sticky trap melodies set to piano-and-808 beats, but, perhaps more importantly, it also aims to showcase a more meditative side to the customarily libertine Chicago rapper. The album’s first track, a spoken-word interlude titled “Therapy Session,” features Alicia Keys playing Durk’s therapist as she goes through a laundry list of recent tragedies that have befallen the rapper. “Wow…that must have been incredibly devastating,” she muses at one point after evoking the murder of his friend King Von, followed by the loss of his brother a mere half a year later. From the jump, the album effectively cultivates a weighty atmosphere.
It’s admirable that an artist of Durk’s popularity is willing to rap about topics such as generational trauma and structural violence on tracks like the well-meaning, if suffocatingly sappy, “All My Life.” And while...

“Morning time, I get on my knees, I pray to Allah/Forgive me for the shit that I did,” harmonizes Lil Durk on “Pelle Coat,” a track from his new album, Almost Healed. The 30-year-old Chicago rapper has steadily gathered momentum ever since he signed with Def Jam in 2013. He’s arguably the most commercially viable proponent of drill music, and that success allows him to float above the noise that roils heated discussions about the homegrown subgenre, even as he navigates the kind of industry bullshit — a long-running beef...

It’s no secret that generations of hip-hop artists have fallen victim to gun violence and drug abuse, with what feels like an unsettling uptick in deaths throughout the genre over the past decade. On his latest single, “Same Problems,” Aap Rocky reflects on the cycle of life and death in connection to generational struggles and a yearning for change where possible.

On A Shivery, star-filled evening in May, Durk Banks is surrounded by friends, family, and what feels like the entire city of Chicago as he prepares to take the stage for a sold-out show at his hometown’s United Center. It’s the final night on his 7220 tour, and it feels like a moment of hard-won victory for Chicago hip-hop and the much-criticized drill scene. “To be able to perform in Chicago and sell it out … that feeling was like something you can’t even explain, for real,” says the 30-year-old artist,...

The New York rapper made the powerful statement during his performance at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards.
