It’s interesting to reveal that many DPs lately prefer using simple and technically straightforward cinema cameras to shoot high-budget action feature films. For instance, in Civil War, the Dji Ronin 4D 6K was extensively used to capture the middle of the action. It was defined by the actors as the ‘Invisible’ camera.
The cameras behind Civil War Venice 2 & Ronin 4D
In our previous coverage of the cameras behind Civil War, we were thrilled about the thought that the Dji Ronin 4D 6K was utilized to capture this A24’s most expensive film, and we were even more delighted that this movie will be screened on IMAX. So, we thought that this was the first time that the Ronin 4D was used to shoot an IMAX project. However, we got an email from Sony stating that the main camera is the Sony Venice 2. Indeed, the Venice 2 is the A camera.

Four months into 2024, and it’s already shaping up to be an exceptionally strong year for cinematography, with several standout films that represent the art form at its apex. Perhaps what’s most welcome about these films is their variety, not only in terms of genre and tone but also budget and position in the marketplace. From the studio system, we have Greig Fraser’s extraordinary work on “Dune: Part Two,” which doubles down on the ambition and tactile detail of Fraser’s work on its predecessor (for which he justly received an Academy Award) to create one of the most flat-out beautiful epics since the glory days of David Lean. From the world of low-budget, independent filmmaking, we have “I Saw the TV Glow,” where cinematographer Eric Yue designs a meticulous and expressive visual corollary for his protagonist’s inner state.

Because the two protagonists of “Civil War” are war photographers, the A24 film’s script writes a check that director Alex Garland and especially cinematographer Rob Hardy need to cash. The movie is punctuated in key moments by in-world photography taken by Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and Jessie (Caliee Spaeny). It was important, therefore, to create compositions that would reflect how each of them sees America unraveling around them.
When we first meet her, Lee is already as legendary as actual WWII photographer Lee Miller, and there seems to be a distance and a sense of environment to the pictures she takes. One of the first things we watch her do is walk into the carnage of a suicide bombing. She’s putting herself in the midst of the bodies but constructing images where the story and the pain stretch well past the frame. Jessie, meanwhile, is completely new to the...

Director Alex Garland and cinematographer Rob Hardy have worked together to make worlds that all feel like they could beat you up, whether they’re vast and weird (“Annihilation“), contained and sharp (“Ex Machina“), or geometric and severe (“Devs”). The pair’s collaborations have a consideration of space and power with an almost magnetic pull. The firepower of their latest film, “Civil War,” is quite literal. The camera’s job is to watch the journalist characters embedded in a military assault on Washington, D.C., witness the Lincoln Monument get blown up.
In this, “Civil War” joins a robust tradition of war films stretching back as far as 1925’s “The Big Parade” and 1926’s “What Price Glory?” that try to convey the power of violence itself: its horror, its allure, its twisted humor, and most of all its undeniable pull towards more violence. Plot: In the United States, amid a brutal civil war, a team of journalists drive from New York to Washington D.C, where they’ve been promised an interview with the president.
Review: A24 is the only movie studio I know of that’s picked up a cult following of its own. Their brand has become one of the most trusted among discerning film fans, delivering a slew of interesting, provocative movies that fit all genres. In some ways, they are a throwback to an older kind of filmmaking in that they’ve never focused on chasing franchises and have always been filmmaker-focused. They’ve always taken risks, and it’s paid off more than it hasn’t. However, their latest film, Civil War, is arguably their riskiest movie, sporting their biggest budget (north of $50 million) and subject matter that could be seen as a bit of a political powder keg.

Four journalists head into the heart of a United States tearing itself apart in Civil War. Alex Garland’s best film yet? Quite possibly. Our review:
It’s a wonder what people who live in war-torn countries might think of Civil War, the latest film from writer-director Alex Garland. Would they give a ‘welcome to my world’ shrug? Would they perhaps feel a frisson of schadenfreude at the sight of a too-big-to fail democracy tearing itself apart?
Whatever their reaction might be, it’s the realism with which Garland plunges North America into a bitter internal conflict that gives Civil War such an electrical charge. We in the West have become used to images of brutality in far-off lands; when those images are set against all-American chain stores – a crashed military chopper outside a Jc Penney, tanks rolling through city streets – the results are indelibly disturbing.

Civil War: is another ‘Filmed for IMAX’ mega-budget project shot on a prosumer camera. This time the team picked the Dji Ronin 4D. IMAX movies that are being shot on prosumer cameras — A new trend?
Shooting for IMAX with the Dji Ronin 4D Update (26/3/24): A note from IMAX
Civil War did not use IMAX-certified cameras. The Dji Ronin 4D is not an IMAX-certified camera. Furthermore, IMAX states: “Filmed for IMAX is a specific program here that most importantly involves productions that are shot with IMAX film cameras or IMAX-certified digital cameras. There are other key points that designate a title Filmed for IMAX – e.g. extended, bespoke marketing support from IMAX in partnership with our studio partners, IMAX involvement from pre- through post-production, and the like”.

Alex Garland’s latest film Civil War, from A24 and featuring a star-studded cast including Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, aims to hold a mirror up to a society spiraling out amongst civil war. In a time when flipping through the news or scrolling through social media can feel like peering into dystopia, Garland wants to crystallize these anxieties into a narrative form, offering a prophetic vision of America’s future. However, despite its ambitious premise and high-caliber cast, the movie stands as a muddled reflection, ultimately rendering its cautionary tale less impactful than intended.
Civil War opens amidst the mayhem of a divided nation, where the President is poised to address the nation on the American military’s triumph over the secessionist Western states of California and Texas. Amidst widespread disorder, New York City emerges as a primary battleground, morphed...

The details of American politics do not concern Alex Garland in Civil War.
Despite the controversy it’s already courted about its supposed prescience, the unsettling feature from the British filmmaker doesn’t predict a future based on the country’s current two-party system. Garland is far more interested in the United States’ self-regarding exceptionalism, its belief in its own safety from executive instability. He is fascinated by how factionalism instigates conflict and how no nation is immune to the results of its violence.
Premiering at SXSW, Civil War explores these preoccupations from the perspective of a group of journalists as they chronicle life in their war-torn country while traveling to Washington, D.C. We meet the crew in New York, where they are covering a tense confrontation between civilians and police. A24 revealed its provocative action drama Civil War at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on Thursday night.
Screening to a packed audience at Austin’s Paramount Theater, Civil War was revealed to be a tribute to war journalism that veers away from explaining the politics that led to its central conflict. The movie instead depicts the practicalities and horrors of a civil war in modern-day America. The first-blush audience reactions (below) are raves, with viewers calling the film a riveting and haunting movie, while the first round of critic reviews have the film earning an 83 percent “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

A24’s new trailer for Civil War doesn’t move viewers any closer to understanding how, given the history of our country, California would be joining Texas and Florida in seceding from the United States. The idea of a second Civil War is nowhere near as far-fetched as Texas and Florida agreeing with anything California proposes, and vice versa, and writer/director Alex Garland recently said he wants audiences to ask how that could possibly happen.
“I tend not to spell things out in films. I sometimes feel overly spoon-fed by cinema, and so I probably just react against that,” said Garland in an interview with Empire. “That question, why Texas and California, is a question that I want the audience to ask.”
The film stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman. Spaeny, McKinley Henderson, Offerman, and Mizuno previously starred...

A24 has released a new trailer for Alex Garland’s epic-looking Civil War, starring Cailee Spaeny and Kirsten Dunst. Have a gander:
We don’t have inside details on things like production budgets, but from an outsider’s standpoint, Civil War looks like author and filmmaker Alex Garland’s biggest film yet. About a near-future USA set on tearing itself apart, it’s a cinematic and quite expensive-seeming thriller from the trendy, boutique production company, A24.
Although precise plot details are limited to a coy logline or two, much is evident from the latest trailer, which you can find below. Cailee Spaeny and Kirsten Dunst play a pair of war photographers making their way across America towards Washington DC, providing a grounded view of a war between allied states – seemingly, the ‘western forces of Texas and California’ and something called the Florida Alliance.

In The Book of Clarence, Jeymes Samuel applies his jocular style — anachronistic music, rapid-fire banter and winking asides — to a Biblical epic that ends up strangely self-conscious when it comes to its comic ambitions. The director’s latest venture whisks audiences off to ancient Jerusalem, where locals grumble about the Romans and circulate news of a Messiah. Rumor has it he calls himself the son of God (something about an Immaculate Conception) and can turn water into wine. He leads a flock of apostles, 12 men devoted to spreading his gospel (they believe all men are born equal). Few people have seen this Jesus, but his existence excites them.
Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield), a peddler whose cocksure attitude shrouds the softer parts of his heart, doesn’t buy it. The claims made on behalf of Jesus are strong. (Walking on water? Really?) God doesn’t exist and you can’t raise the dead,...

Regina Hall came down with pneumonia while shooting Girls Trip, the irreverent 2017 comedy from Will Packer, a savant who repeatedly has shown an obdurate Hollywood that Black movies can mint money at the box office. Hall recalls Packer’s superpower: persuading anyone, be they filmmakers, studio execs or, in this case, his star, to do what needs to be done. “I came to work, they tested me, and I had a fever. Will said he would rearrange the entire schedule so we could shoot my part first: ‘If you can just get through this scene for me, you won’t have to do anything else,’ ” she says. “I did get through it, and he made sure I had everything I needed to heal.”

Robin Hardy’s folk horror classic The Wicker Man introduces its protagonist, Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), in only a few short scenes that sketch him as a devout Christian and religious conservative. As he takes the sacrament and sings hymns in a small Scottish church, he appears to be in his element but nonetheless uncomfortable. He’s a man who looks petrified to touch any surface of the material world lest it corrupt his being.
One quickly knows everything about how Howie regards the world. This allows The Wicker Man, as written by Anthony Shaffer, to swiftly upend the man’s sense of reality when the police officer flies out to the remote Hebridean town of Summerisle to investigate a missing persons case and discovers that all of the hamlet’s residents practice a pre-Christian form of paganism.

The grand-scale Biblical epics that midcentury Hollywood churned out to roaring box-office returns had many drawcards as (so to speak) mass entertainment — brawny action, transporting spectacle, then jaw-dropping effects — but a sense of humor, by and large, wasn’t one of them. That’s something British musician-turned-filmmaker Jeymes Samuel attempts to rectify in his offbeat messiah story “The Book of Clarence,” a newly invented tale that runs parallel to the life and death of Jesus in ways both blithely blasphemous and sincerely Christian. Following on from Samuel’s debut, the rollicking hip-hop western “The Harder They Fall,” with its flagrantly anachronistic remix of genre traditions and a predominantly Black cast, “Clarence” clearly seeks to be the first film loosely of its type to make any pop-cultural impact since Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” nearly 20 years ago.
It’ll certainly prove a hard sell to the U.S.

Finally, we're getting some Grace content, you guys!
Grace Ryder is really the heart of the series, and it's been long overdue for the season to give her a meaty storyline or at least pick up one from her past.
And thankfully, 9-1-1 Lone Star Season 4 Episode 13 will deliver on that as we check back in with Grace's family, including her parents and previously unseen sisters.
Much of 9-1-1 Lone Star Season 4 has scaled back on the emergencies and the calls that the teams have been dispatched to in favor of providing us with more personal arcs and insight into the various characters off the job as much as on it.
It's been a polarizing decision with mixed results, but no one can deny how great it is when they've taken time to delve deeper into characters, especially those of whom we haven't learned much about over the years.

Exclusive: Veteran TV lit agent Amy Retzinger is departing Verve where she has been a partner for more than 11 years. She just confirmed her exit in a company email with the subject “New Adventures…”
In it, Retzinger revealed that she is leaving agenting and plans to focus her efforts on a plastics reclamation startup, acting on her passion about eliminating single-use plastics. She also may pursue career opportunities in hospitality, I hear. This coming summer, Retzinger and her family will be moving to Portugal where their children have been enrolled in school for next fall.
Retzinger was the first agent outside Verve’s founding trio of Bryan Besser, Adam Levine, and Bill Weinstein to join the partnership two years after the agency was launched. She added TV lit experience to Verve, whose founding partners all hailed from the feature side of lit representation, and spearheaded the agency’s television strategy.

Jeymes Samuel’s star-packed The Book of Clarence will open in theaters Sept. 22, Sony announced Thursday. The Legendary Pictures movie is written and directed by the multihyphenate British filmmaker and singer-songwriter, who made his feature debut when helming the acclaimed 2021 Western The Harder They Fall.
Inspired by Hollywood epics set in biblical times, Book of Clarence stars Lakeith Stanfield as a down-on-his-luck denizen of Jerusalem who attempts to capitalize on the influence of the Messiah for his own personal gain. It’s a journey that instead leads him on an exploration of the idea of faith.
The movie’s high-profile cast includes Omar Sy, Rj Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Additional cast includes Caleb McLaughlin, Babs Olusanmokun, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Nicholas Pinnock, Micheal Ward, Chase Dillon, Tom Glynn-Carney and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

Are there any sweeter words in the age of too much TV than “limited series?” It’s a category that guarantees minimal time commitment with maximum return — be it weekly watercooler gossip or a delicious binge. The limited series is the perfect hybrid between a movie and a longer-running TV series, with intricate stories, complex characters, and just the right amount of moving parts. The fact that a series will not return makes the narrative precious and the ending paramount, even if that means leaving things deliberately open-ended. This one-off nature makes them perfect for literary adaptations, epic events, and period pieces.
What doesn’t qualify? Those that started as limited series but then blew up enough to get a second season. We’ve also limited (ha!) ourselves to scripted for now, since Ken Burns will probably deserve his own ranking down the line, once he slows down and we...

The "Mission: Impossible" franchise is a revolving door. Countless characters appear in one movie and then vanish without a trace, let alone a name-drop, from the next one. The only anchors from the beginning to the present are Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell.
These hi-and-byes happened behind the camera too. From the first 1996 "Mission: Impossible" up to 2015's "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," each film had a different director. This was what kept the franchise fresh even though the scripts were formulaic (Ethan's framed for treason by the real mole in every other movie). Each director had a different style and so told the story in a different way.
Brian De Palma's original "Mission: Impossible" had the most low-key set pieces but still had his usual boiling suspense; take the scene where Ethan is accused of being a mole by his handler Kittridge...

Collaboration adds extra depth and layers to the creative process, often presenting something new and exciting that otherwise wouldn't have been thought of. Alex Garland, most known for his sci-fi oriented films "Ex-Machina" and "Annihilation," has often spoken about how he finds the filmmaking process, by its very nature, to be a collaborative process. As he explained in a discussion at the National Film and Television School (Nfts), the collaboration in filmmaking is what makes the process exciting for him compared to the isolating nature of writing novels (which is how he began his career). It's that approach that has followed Garland throughout the entirety of his directorial career.
Collaboration was a vital element behind his most recently released film, "Men." A horror folktale with a focus on the age-old dynamics between men and women, "Men" follows a young woman (Jessie Buckley) taking some time to herself in the British countryside.

In Patrick Hughes’ “The Man from Toronto,” a throwback buddy action-comedy that offsets its run-of-the-mill sense of humor with a pair of appealing leads, everything about the lovable Teddy Jackson (Kevin Hart) screams screw-up from the get-go.
A soon-to-be-jobless salesperson at a modest Virginia gym, Teddy is introduced via a series of hysterically cringe-y online videos in which he stubbornly tries to launch the next big workout sensation. But his elastic resistance belt TeddyBand — one of his painfully inane inventions — does nothing other than slap him in the face. The dodgy pull-up bar he’s designed? It promptly collapses. In fact, this wannabe internet sensation is so famously a failure in his pursuits that his saintly wife Lori’s (Jasmine Matthews) law-firm colleagues have coined the saying “Teddy’ed it” after him, a phrase used whenever someone messes up at work.
What do you get when someone so inept gets...

Filmmaker Alex Garland has been open about the fact that Men, his first outright horror movie as a director, began with a fascination for the Green Man, an ancient and mysterious figure who’s been carved into stone edifices across Europe and the Middle East for millennia. This is apt, because despite some credible and educated guesses, no one is entirely sure what exactly the Green Man represents, or how he was worshiped (if at all).
Garland’s film, which is about the implacable nature of man—and his grossly imbalanced relationship with woman—is similarly opaque. The film is swimming with ideas and imagery, pagan and Christian alike, yet perhaps more so than any genre picture in recent memory, even from A24, the exact meaning of the film’s final movements remains elusive. Baffling, even. Nevertheless, it is when Men is at its most primal and esoteric, and when...

After personal trauma, a protagonist retreats to a secluded location for solace and inner reconciliation only to be further haunted. The set-up is familiar to many a horror film, but with Men being an Alex Garland creation, something more peculiar lurks behind this surface. A blend of the compact thrills of Ex Machina and the surreal oddities of Annihilation, his latest is delightfully inscrutable in its strangest moments yet thematically simplistic and disappointingly misshapen on the whole. Using misogyny—both subtly ingrained and its more vicious, physical form—as the window dressing for allegory-heavy arthouse horror, Men often feels like it is just scratching the surface of more complexity, faintly suggesting rather than genuinely exploring its roughly sketched ideas.

"You must wonder why you drove him to it..." But is wasn't her... was it? A24 has debuted the full-length official trailer for Alex Garland's new film titled Men, his follow-up to both Annihilation and Ex Machina. There's still no official synopsis, but from what we can tell from this trailer, it's a horror thriller about how haunting most men can be. Jessie Buckley stars as a woman who goes on solo a vacation in the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband. It also features Rory Kinnear (playing a bunch of different men) and Paapa Essiedu. With cinematography by Rob Hardy. This trailer gives us a better look at what's going on - something involving this apple tree (an Adam & Eve reference?) and forbidden fruit and how it connects to the many men around her. Yeah this looks incredible. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Alex Garland's Men,...

After an enticing yet brief teaser, the full trailer for Alex Garland’s Men has now arrived, which finally unveils the first threads of the story while still packing a good deal of mystery. Coming from the director of Ex Machina and Annihilation, the psychological horror film stars Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley, along with Rory Kinnear and Paapa Essiedu, and will arrive on May 20 in theaters from A24.
Recently rated R for “disturbing and violent content, graphic nudity, grisly images and language,” the trailer reveals that the story tracks Buckley’s character Harper, following the suicide of her partner, as she retreats to the English countryside. Rather than a moment for solitary grieving, she’s haunted by––as the title suggests––multiple men, all played in different forms by Kinnear. Clearly returning to more of a small-scale akin to his debut, we’re quite curious what Garland has cooked up here.

Ashes to ashes, apples to apples, and Jessie Buckley descends into a mouth of madness in “Men.”
Director Alex Garland’s upcoming A24 thriller centers on a woman (Buckley) who plans a countryside holiday while mourning her husband (“I May Destroy You” breakout Paapa Essiedu) who seemingly jumped off of their roof, plunging to his death. Yet Buckley’s character is still haunted by her loss, especially after biting into the “forbidden fruit” on the property of her bed and breakfast.
Buckley starts seeing ghosts — and the face of her innkeeper (Rory Kinnear) — everywhere. How many “Men” is too many? Academy Award nominee Buckley seems to be trapped in a purgatory of her own making, with each male figure demanding she take responsibility for her spouse’s death and the blame for his unhappiness. A24’s “Men” premieres in theaters on May 20.

"What are you doing here?" A24 has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Alex Garland's new film titled Men, his follow-up to Annihilation and Ex Machina. There's no official synopsis available, but from what we can tell in this trailer, it's more of a horror than a sci-fi film this time. And what's with that apple tree? I am more than interested in finding out what this film is all about. Garland is a cinema mastermind. Get a look below. After directing the heady FX sci-fi series “Devs,” Alex Garland returns to the realm of auteur horror with his latest film, “Men.” It stars newly minted Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”) in a role that sounds eerily similar to the woman she played in Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”: She’s on a sort of nightmarish vacation trip in the countryside, where something haunting is swirling around in her present, and it has to do with men. Watch the first trailer for the A24 film below.
Joining Jessie Buckley are Rory Kinnear (most recently seen as MI6 employee Bill Tanner in the Daniel Craig James Bond films) and Paapa Essiedu (the “I May Destroy You” breakout who earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor playing Wade). “Men” features cinematography from Rob Hardy, who shot Alex Garland’s Academy Award-nominated directorial debut “Ex Machina,...

Following up Ex Machina and Annihilation, director Alex Garland is returning this summer with Men, a film which looks to put him more firmly in psychological horror territory. Led by recent Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley, and also starring Rory Kinnear and Paapa Essiedu, the first teaser trailer has now arrived from A24 ahead of a May 20 theatrical release.
The logine for the film features a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband. In the brief teaser, we see Buckley’s character haunted by Kinnear’s character (perhaps playing the ex-husband back from the dead?) in what has some shades of the recent Sundance premiere Resurrection. With promising cinematography from Rob Hardy, who reteams with Garland after his first two features as well as Devs, this first look at footage certainly raises our anticipation.
