Attended Brow of the Hill Christian Brothers Technical School in Derry City, which he left at age 15 without qualifications.
Was Minister for Education in the recently suspended Northern Ireland Stormont Parliament.
Twice elected (so far) abstentionist M.P. for nationalist-majority Mid-Ulster in the British House of Commons.
Arrested and imprisoned for six months in Dublin on suspicion of IRA membership in the 1970s.
At his death on March 21, 2017 he was survived by his wife, Bernadette, two daughters and two sons.
