J Balvin has been laying low since releasing his album Jose back in 2021. Sure, there were some big collabs with Trueno and Ed Sheeran, but fans have been waiting to see what else the Colombian star has in store. Now he’s back in full force — and he’s enlisted Usher and DJ Khaled to make a splash.
His new song “Dientes” is a brash, relentlessly catchy mix of genres that interpolates Usher’s 2004 mega-hit “Yeah” with bold, completely unpredictable sounds. Some of that is because of the masterminds behind...

Trueno is honoring 50 years of hip-hop by working with rap legends Cypress Hill on a remixed version of the Argentine star’s “Fuck el Police,” which originally interpolated and sampled N.W.A.’s classic cop protest song “Fuck tha Police” 35 years later.
“Bringing Cypress Hill on for ‘Fuck el Police’ was so important for me, given the style of the song,” Trueno tells Rolling Stone. “Of course, it has a lot of history with N.W.A and ‘Fuck tha Police’… The flow of the song, for me it [felt] very much Cypress Hill,...

Over the past decade, the Pacific Northwest has steadily blossomed into a stateside haven for fresh, alternative sounds from Latin America. In Portland, parties such as Gran Ritmos and Tropidahl transformed nightlife by celebrating diasporic hybrids of cumbia, dembow, and bhangra. Meanwhile, in Seattle, the psych and punk bedlam of Freakout Fest rejuvenated its avant curation with continent-spanning talent ranging from rising acts like Margaritas Podridas and Los Esplifs to bonafide legends including Os Mutantes and Los Dugs Dugs.

Nathy Peluso debuted “Salvaje” on Wednesday, a house-driven track inspired by ballroom culture.
The new single — written and produced by Peluso, in collaboration with Didi Gutman and Illangelo — was accompanied by a music video directed by Félix Bollaín and produced by Little Spain. The visual features featuring Peluso voguing in different looks, and a press release describes the “ballroom-culture inspired track” as “music for your culo.”

Before he’d even turned 20, Trueno had made a name for himself as a champion freestyle battler in Argentina’s growing rap scene. He was witty, funny, and quick on his feet, and he showed people the full range of what he could do on his debut album, Atrevido, from 2020.
But Bien o Mal, released in May 2022, was a display of maturity and depth that broke new ground. Split into two sections, one half of the album was full of songs of protests that spoke out against corruption, dictatorships, economic inequality,...

The Latin music industry had another massive year in 2022, seeing a 35 percent growth in revenue, according to the RIAA. That momentum shows no signs of slowing down as artists like Bad Bunny and Karol G continue topping the charts and selling out massive tours — and there are even more rising stars right at their heels, ready to take the music even farther.
2022 had plenty of breakout acts from across Latin America and the diaspora. Uncompromising and unapologetically honest artists such as Tokischa and Villano Antillano saw massive success, while rappers...

El Alfa never stops. Throughout his 15-year career, the Dominican pioneer has worked relentlessly to bring dembow to the world — and it’s worked. The genre has gone massively global with him at the center, respected among his peers and the whole of the Latin music industry as dembow’s fierce leader.
Over the last year, he’s brought new innovations to his sound, particularly on this spring’s Sabiduria, a bold, wide-ranging album that included guaracha influences, experiments with Mexican traditions, and collaborations with American rappers like French Montana and Lil Pump.

Stepping onstage at Brooklyn’s Public Records one night late in October, Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Ileana Cabra carried herself delicately, dressed like an indie Alice in Wonderland in a puff-sleeved mini dress. The artist, who goes by iLe, was getting ready to serenade the crowd with her brassy voice while performing songs from her new album Nacarile — and didn’t look at all like she was about to burst into a bullish rap. But halfway through “Ningún Lugar,” a slow rock number written with Argentine freestyle rapper Trueno, iLe launched...

Over the past several years, two of Argentina’s biggest careers have run parallel to each other: In the port city of Rosario, singer and rapper Nicki Nicole broke into the music scene when her 2019 track “Wapo Traketero” became a hit and showcased her gritty, darkly hued R&b sound to the world. A few months later, a massive YouTube session with the buzzy producer Bizarrap blasted her into even more fame, setting the stage for her debut album, Recuerdos. About 200 miles away, in the working-class neighborhood of La Boca in Buenos Aires,...

When Argentinean rapper Trueno dropped his acclaimed album Bien o Mal on May 13, fans were surprised to see two songs were kept a total secret — they showed up on the tracklist, but were greyed-out on streaming platforms. Earlier this month, Trueno finally revealed one of those songs was a major collaboration with J Balvin called “Un Paso” — and on Thursday, the two released the video they’d shot for the track together.

Trueno’s latest album, Bien o Mal, is a tribute to all of Latin America, filled with songs that detail the beauty, struggles, and pride found in every corner on the continent. But on “Argentina,” he takes a few moments to reflect on the country he comes from, and he enlists Argentinean singer Nathy Peluso for some vocal interplay. Watch the exclusive video premiere above.
The song draws on Argentina’s folk traditions, incorporating nylon guitars and a sample of the famed singer Atahualpa Yupanqui through a spare, hip hop-inspired beat.

The last couple of weeks have marked some of the most gigantic, game-changing moments in Trueno’s career. First, the 20-year-old Argentinean rapper was singled out by Damon Albarn, who brought him onstage at the Quilmes Rock in Buenos Aires earlier this month and had him freestyle to “Clint Eastwood” for thousands of people. “It was incredible,” he says on a recent Zoom call in Spanish. “I grew up listening to Gorillaz, and it means a lot to me to be able to showcase Argentinean rap at that level.”
