As Hollywood seems to be slowly waking back to life this summer while the coronavirus pandemic rages on, new projects are being lined up even as finished ones continue to be delayed. Look no further than Edgar Wright, whose next movie, the cryptic time travel chiller, Last Night in Soho, has been pushed from September to April 2021. Even so, he’s worked out with Universal Pictures a new project that sounds incredibly intriguing: he’s adapting Adrian McKinty’s The Chain.
In a move that partners Wright for the first time with screenwriter Jane Goldman, the genre maestro who’s worked on the screenplays for Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, Universal announced Thursday (via Deadline) that they have secured the rights to The Chain.
That book, which debuted as a bestseller with critical raves last year, features a hell of a high-concept premise. In essence,...

For TV producers who lose their shows because their stars are racist trolls zonked out on Ambien, they have insurance for that now. It’s called “disgrace insurance,” and it covers production losses due to a wide range of disgraceful and illegal behavior by members of the cast and crew.
The ins and outs of disgrace insurance was the subject of a panel discussion today at the PGA’s 10th annual Produced By Conference, which is being held on the Paramount lot.
Bob Jellen, managing director of Hub Entertainment Insurance and the guru of disgrace insurance policies, said he’s written more than 4,000 of them, but noted that they’ve only been invoked five or six times. They cover loses due to sexual harassment, assault, drug arrests and even murder by a cast and crew member.

New York — They aren't looking for sex and they're not in need of baby daddies. It's those two things that landed the single ladies of "Pregnant & Dating" on reality TV to begin with.
Five in all, the growing and glowing women in We tv's latest lineup play mini-golf, lace up bowling shoes and enjoy romantic non-alcoholic outings, but the mere idea of dating while pregnant has earned them a bit of snark.
"I see (at)WEtv has a show called (hash)pregnantanddating. You straight people really are something else," tweeted gay comedian Dave Rubin.
While some of the on-air dates know about the pregnancies, most of the men have at least one awkward deer-in-the-camera-lights moment when the subject comes up. And then there's the subject of sex, which the show's moms-to-be are happy to mull on air. It's also the subject that generated a gross-out factor among some on social media.

However, the friendship turns into something sinisterly controlling as she shuts out Lucie's old friend Rebecca (Sarah Bolger), who is recovering from her father's suicide. Chicago – Mary Harron’s “The Moth Diaries” is a perfect teaching tool for potential filmmakers. It is proof of two oft-forgotten rules of cinema: 1. Not every successful piece of work in one medium should be adapted to another (or not all good books make good films). 2. Even talented directors can be the wrong fit for the material. This movie is a mess in so many ways that promising young actresses and a typically-intriguing director get sucked into its almost-complete failure. There are clear signs of what intrigued everyone about the source material but none of it translated to quality cinema.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
2002’s “The Moth Diaries” by Rachel Klein was clearly a blend of adolescent angst and gothic literature – not the easiest mash-up to translate to the big screen. The very title implies something that requires a first-person narrator, someone who can convey their complex thoughts via the written word in...

Spring is here, folks! New love and life are upon us now that the dreary, ice-cold fingers of winter have withdrawn. Loosely translated into the logic of releasing films, this means documentaries and romance melodramas abound! They pop up from studios like daisies from freshly hoed lawns. Head to theaters this weekend and take in the sweet love of soldiers, vampires, Rastafarians, and even chimpanzees. And don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers on your way.
Zac Efron is “The Lucky One” in the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel opening in theaters this weekend. A marine stationed in Iraq, Efron’s Logan is saved from certain death when a photo of the beautiful Beth (Taylor Schilling) distracts him. Though he originally plans to find and thank her for unknowingly saving his life, Logan ultimately keeps the story to himself once they meet, but hangs around just, well, ‘cause.

As we get further and further out from The Twilight Saga’s initial success, it starts to feel like more and more of a stretch to accuse everything featuring young women and vampires of being a cash grab meant to capitalize on the mainstream’s fascination with Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. And yet, other than as a cash in on Twilight, I can honestly think of no other reason why a movie as miserable as The Moth Diaries would exist. A tale about the repressed sexuality of an all girls boarding school and how bottled up feelings bubble to the surface once a vampire is introduced into the mix, director Mary Harron’s adaptation of the Rachel Klein novel of the same name fails on almost every level imaginable. Initially my instincts were to blame that on Klein’s novel – which I haven’t read – because Harron had already proven herself a capable adapter of literary...

The R-Rated The Moth Diaries is Mary Harron's new horror film.
To horror film fans, she's more affectionately known as the woman who directed the American Psycho film adaptation from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. Her films I Shot Andy Warhol, and The Notorious Bettie Page are just as respected by wider circles, however.
The Moth Diaries is based on the novel by Rachel Klein Klein, which tells the story of Rebecca (played by Sarah Bolger in Harron's film), a young girl haunted by her father’s suicide who enrolls in an elite boarding school for girls. A mysterious new girl named Ernessa (Lily Cole) threatens Rebecca’s friendship with the popular Lucy (Sarah Gadon). Lucy falls under Ernessa’s charismatic spell. This is a reprint of our review from the Venice Film Festival.
It's remarkably tough to get any film financed, at least one that doesn't have 3D talking animals from a popular cartoon series. So it's no surprise that some filmmakers, for all their best efforts, can go three, four, five or more years between pictures. Worryingly, it seems to be doubly true for female directors. Look at Kimberley Pierce, who's only made one film in the twelve years since "Boys Don't Cry," or Tamara Jenkins, for whom nearly a decade separated "Slums of Beverley Hills" and "The Savages," or even Kathryn Bigelow, who might be an Oscar-winner now, but had a six-year break before "The Hurt Locker." One of the key examples here is Mary Harron, who since her 1996 debut "I Shot Andy Warhol" had only made two other films: "American Psycho," and the biopic "The Notorious Bettie Page,...

Over the course of her 16-year feature filmmaking career, award-winning writer/director Mary Harron ("American Psycho") has only made four films. Her latest, "The Moth Diaries" (opening this Friday via IFC Films, and currently available On Demand) is her first feature to hit screens since her saucy black-and-white biopic "The Notorious Bettie Page" opened back in 2005. One thing's for certain: this is one filmmaker who's selective about her projects. Since "Bettie Page" wrapped, Harron's been keeping busy writing and directing for TV (including for HBO's "Big Love"), and developing a punk film with her husband, writer/director John C. Walsh ("Pipe Dream") that will hopefully see the light of day soon. "The Moth Diaries" finds Harron dabbling in the horror genre for the first time, adapting the metaphorical vampire coming-of-age bestseller of the same name by Rachel Klein. Sarah...

Grounded in a current day realism about sex, friendship, and work for recent college grads, HBO's much touted series Girls, airs this weekend. To focus on one aspect of its satire, in Girls, sex is free and freely given, an unsatisfying service by the girls, done with bewildered cads, happy to get what they can. Is this hooking up the logical extension of what Erica Jong extolled in her landmark 1973 novel Fear of Flying: "the zipless fuck?" Freed, women should pull down their pants at whim the way men do, right? For women who grew up with these "joys of sex," watching Hannah (Lena Dunham of Tiny Furniture fame who also writes and directs) and her twenty-something pals is an untoward vision of what many suspected back in the day, that liberation did not necessarily bring enlightenment. Viewers can watch Hannah's guy (Adam Driver) enter her from behind, with...

Mary Harron's movie adaptation of Rachel Klein's book, The Moth Diaries, opens on April 20. It follows the Gothic-inspired tale of the darkly obsessive triangle that grows between three adolescent girls, Rebecca, Lucy and Ernessa, at an elite private school. You know, the kind of friendship that can only occur when privileged teenagers live together and wear the same clothes. The kind of friendship that gives blood brothers new meaning. There's a long history of the private school trope in the horror genre. Shrouded in mystery, set away from society, obsessed with tradition and ritual, and often filled with young women in demure skirts just waiting to be ripped off, it's the perfect playground for all...

Films like The Twilight Saga and TV shows like "True Blood" have created a resurgence of interest in the vampire myth for today’s generation of angst-filled, love-stricken teens. Given the colossal success of both, it’s no wonder Hollywood continues to bring the popular undead to life on screen.
The Moth Diaries is the latest film to grab for a slice of the gothic pie. Based on a book by Rachel Klein and predating Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight by a couple of years, The Moth Diaries centres around an exclusive all-girls boarding school, where the friendship between two best friends, Lucy and Rebecca, is shattered by the arrival of Ernessa, a dark and mysterious exchange student steeped in an aura of supernatural nuance. When terrible things start happening around school, Rebecca begins to suspect Ernessa may be a vampire.

If you saw the trailer for Mary Harron's new gothic thriller The Moth Diaries (based on the book by Rachel Klein), then you'll know it is all about the gothic in literary fiction. Except on film.
All the purely horror websites are covering this like it's horror, but it isn't. We interviewed Harron, and while we won't be posting the interview until the week of April 20, when the film is out in theaters, I can tell you she distinctly says that horror fans should not have "false expectations" because the film is much closer in tone "to Picnic At Hanging Rock or The Virgin Suicides than it is to American Psycho."
And while I'm inclined to consider most things horror because it's fun, I'm really annoyed by lame horror blogs reporting on this like it's some kind of Jess Franco film or something. I mean, it's kind of the only reason they're covering it.

In anticipation of its American debut, a new trailer has been released for the creepy vampire thriller The Moth Diaries. Based on the debut novel of Rachel Klein, the movie tells the story of Rebecca, a 16-year-old girl sent away to an all-girls boarding school after her father passes away and her mother is incapable of taking care of her. A new girl, Ernessa, begins attending the school and slowly Rebecca begins to notice strange and creepy happenings. Could it just be jealousy playing tricks on her mind or are the suspicious events that of the supernatural?
With an overcast sky hanging above a Gothic boarding school filled with cloistered, Hollywood-pretty girls, The Moth Diaries looks like a typical vampire story, but its psychological twists based on adolescent jealousies make it less about the folklore and more about the mind. Could this be the next Ginger Snaps?

The Moth Diaries will be available on iTunes, VOD and other digital means starting March 20th. It will have a theatrical release on April 20th. Check out the synopsis and trailer below:

Mary Harron.s The Moth Diaries has been on our radar for some time now, probably since we first reported Scott Speedman and Lily Cole.s involvement in September 2010. Well, the horror-thriller . an adaptation of Rachel Klein.s novel . has a release date (April 20) and a trailer, which we.re sharing below courtesy of Yahoo Movies: Gothic horrors in an all-girl boarding school? Speedman as a brainy instructor? Cole and The Tudors beauty Sarah Bolger as sexually provocative schoolgirls trading supernatural secrets? Yeah, this can.t get here soon enough, particularly once it starts selling Cole.s character, Ernessa, as a lusty, Single White vampire plucking off coeds one by one. .Do you believe in the supernatural?. the clip asks. And I might, so long as Harron.s able to get under our skins here the way she turned the screws in American Psycho. The gifted director has been honing...

Rebecca (Sarah Bolger), a young girl who, haunted by her father’s suicide, enrolls in an elite boarding school for girls. Director Mary Harron has never shied away from edgy material. Her early career was marked by the wicked one-two punch of "I Shot Andy Warhol" and of course, the contemporary classic "American Psycho." She followed up those films with the pinup biopic "The Notorious Bettie Page" and has also peppered her CV with TV work on shows as diverse as "Big Love," "Oz" and "Homocide: Life On The Streets." It's coming on seven years since her last feature effort, but the director is returning this year with "The Moth Diaries."
Playing both Venice and Tiff last fall, the film once again finds the helmer working in unique territory. I did! And I can't decide if The Moth Diaries is Ya or not. Or is it more like Hammer's The Vampire Lovers?
It's Mary Harron's latest film (she directed American Psycho) and stars Scott Speedman, Lily Cole and Sarah Bolger. The long synopsis of the film, based on the novel by Rachel Klein, reminds me of a gothic thriller:
Quote:
Rebecca, a young girl haunted by her father's suicide, begins her junior year at an elite girls boarding school, hoping for a fresh start. From the outset, her friendship with sunny, innocent Lucy is shattered by the arrival of Ernessa, a mysterious, dark and beautiful girl from Europe. As Ernessa consumes more and more of Lucy's attention, the latter's healthy young body grows pale, thin and weak — as if being drained of life itself.
Her friendship with Lucy slipping away, Rebecca develops a crush on her handsome English professor,...

IFC Films is acquiring U.S. rights to "The Moth Diaries," Mary Harron's adaptation of Rachel Klein's novel, the company announced Monday. The movie, which IFC calls a "sensual gothic film," played at this year's Toronto and Venice International Film Festivals. It stars Lily Cole, Sarah Gadon, Sarah Bolger and Scott Speedman. Harron, who wrote and directed the 2000 adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis' novel "American Psycho," handled both tasks on "The Moth Diaries," as well. The story centers on Rebecca, a young girl played by Bolger, who is haunted by her father's suicide.
