[This story contains major spoilers from the Under the Bridge finale, “Mercy Alone.”]
The final episode of Under the Bridge saw the complete, real-life events come to light around the night Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta in the series) was killed in Saanich, British Columbia by a group of teenagers. She was 14 when she first disappeared in 1997.
The first few minutes of “Mercy Alone,” the eighth episode in Hulu’s true-crime limited series based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, begin with Kelly Ellard (Izzy G.) talking explicitly to Josephine (Chloe Guidry) about wanting to break Reena’s bones with a bat, burn her at the stake and bury her alive in the forest. Kelly’s mom, who is in the room, does not even flinch at her daughter threatening to kill someone in such detail.
Following Warren Glowatski’s (Javon Walton) life sentence in the penultimate episode for his partial involvement in Reena’s death, Kelly...

The first trial of the two manga leakers who were arrested on suspicion of copyright infringement was held at the Kumamoto District Court (presided by Judge Mikito Nakata) on May 27, 2024.
During the trial it was revealed that a popular account on Sns – Dbs Hype – had demanded the Tokyo based company, Japan Deal World, into sending them the leaks from popular manga titles in exchange for promoting their company.
The prosecution stated that Dbs Hype, whose real identity remains unknown, contacted the manager on social media and made the illicit proposal.
The manager then ordered the employee to photograph the unreleased manga at the company’s office, which were then sent to Dbs Hype. This occurred on three occasions between Jan 26th and 31st, 2024.
The copyrighted works in question include One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, and Blue Lock serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine.

MrBeast has closed a reported $100 million TV deal with Amazon Studios to produce Beast Games, a reality TV series based on his YouTube content that will see 1,000 contestants compete for a $5 million cash prize.
We first heard about Beast Games back in January. MrBeast and his team reportedly spent less than a week pitching the series to various streaming services before Amazon closed in with serious intent.
Sources familiar with the matter told The Hollywood Reporter that Amazon beat out at least “one major streaming rival” for the rights, and that a significant part of the deal involved MrBeast being allowed to retain creative control.
“MrBeast has captured the attention and imagination of fans of all ages, from all walks of life, and all over the world,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement. “We are excited to work with Jimmy and his talented team to bring his brilliant,...

The films of Canadian director Kazik Radwanski are freedom in its purest form, or the purest this particular medium can contain. Being the opposite of prescriptive, they sculpt themselves according to interpersonal dynamics that can otherwise be invisible, and by doing so, give shape to parallel emotional worlds, extensions of a protagonist’s psyche. That goes for Derek (Derek Bogart), the impulsive lead in Tower (2012), sleep-deprived gamer dad Erwin (Erwin van Cotthem) from How Heavy This Hammer (2015), and for the chaotic Anne (Deragh Campbell) whose quarter-life crisis makes a delightful whirlpool out of Anne at 13,000 ft (2019). The second collaboration between Radwanski, Campbell, and Matt Johnson following Anne premieres at the Encounters section of this year’s Berlinale and it is humbly named Matt and Mara.
Just as Mara (Campbell) is about to welcome students to her poetry class, she spots her old friend Matt (Matt Johnson) in the corridor. Her...

In the fourth episode of Monsieur Spade, Philippe met Jean-Pierre at the end and managed to take the kid named Zyad from Samir. Oas, a far-right organization, was also after the boy, and it was still unclear in episode 4 why everyone wanted him. Teresa and Henri got closer, but it was revealed that Henri had been spying on Spade for quite a while. The neighboring painter George and his mother Cynthia turned out to be spies working for an intelligence agency, and Spade began to suspect them. However, there are still many questions that remain unanswered, and the biggest question is what Philippe was up to. Let’s see what happened in Monsieur Spade Episode 5.
Episode 5 opened in Algeria in 1956, where Philippe captured a wounded soldier and interrogated him about the man in the picture. This man in the picture seemed to be Jean-Pierre, whom Philippe was probably looking for.

Is there any style of filmmaking in which Xavier Gens cannot excel? His preference is obviously for genre work, making it less likely, even today, that he’ll ever achieve the recognition he deserves, but within that he is always alert to political and social issues, and he handles drama with as much assurance as action. The action in Mayhem is blistering, so impressively delivered that you might miss the storytelling it’s doing at the same time.

Influencer marketing company Whalar thinks the creator economy has “outgrown the spaces, resources, and tools available to creators.”
So, under its new Lighthouse initiative, it’s opening sprawling, dedicated coworking and education campuses where creators–and their teams–will have access to everything from private offices and production studios to screening rooms and in-house coffee shops.
“[E]ach campus will combine learning and career development programs, state-of-the-art production studios, private offices, open-plan workspaces, and cultural-social events accessible through an application-based membership program,” Whalar said in a press release. (Sounds like these might help patch the hole left when YouTube closed all its Spaces in 2021…)
Whalar plans to open its first two Lighthouse campuses in 2024: one in Venice, California, in a building that was originally a post office built in 1937; and one in Brooklyn, built in a 19th-century former pencil factory. Both campuses have production facilities that include video-enabled podcast suites,...

If Harry Styles had actually hacked a gob of spit in Chris Pine’s lap, it may have been because he had recently watched the fellow actor’s feature directorial debut: the paranoid noir satire “Poolman.” It’s a film so abysmal in its writing and assembly that there were numerous walkouts during its premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF 2023 has played host to more actor-turned-directors than usual — Michael Keaton, Anna Kendrick, Viggo Mortensen, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Finn Wolfhard, to name a few — and whether it’s a coincidence, or an attempt to get around the ongoing SAG strikes by having celebrity directors show face, programming “Poolman” in any capacity feels like a severe ethical breach.
There’s little point in singling out any one scene or idea. In isolation, nothing in “Poolman” is quite so offensive as to warrant outright derision on its own,...

Two days before the 2023 Streamy Awards, creator economy experts Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry uploaded a special conversation with some of the show’s nominees. The podcasting duo shared a round table with Cleo Abram, Ammar Kandil of Yes Theory, Michelle Khare, Zach King, and Ryan Trahan, all of whom discussed their experiences as online video professionals.
The conversation, dubbed “YouTube Mastermind,” offered insights from prominent figures in the creator ecosystem. The individuals who assembled at Colin and Samir’s roundtable weren’t just 2023 Streamy nominees. Four of them — Kandil, Khare, King, and Trahan — have taken home trophies at previous editions of the online video award show. (Full disclosure: Tubefilter co-produces the Streamys alongside dick clark productions.)
The wide-ranging conversation touched on many topics related to the creator lifestyle. The panelists discussed their daily lives, routines, and creative processes, while also identifying hurdles they had to overcome before making it big.

Spotter and Colin and Samir have teamed up to make video titles go boom. The creator economy company has teamed up with the esteemed YouTube duo to roll out Title Exploder, an AI-driven tool that helps users come up with the perfect hook.
Title Exploder is a product of Spotter Labs, the AI-powered wing of catalog licensing pioneer Spotter. As creators query ChatGPT in order to come up with title, video, and thumbnail ideas, Spotter is bringing fine controls to that AI-generated content. After putting a working title into the Exploder, creators can edit it in four different ways: Explode, Shorten, Rewrite, and Reverb.
The Explode option generates 40 alternative title ideas inspired by the original input. Shorten truncates the title, Rewrite injects it with a little creativity, and Reverb changes its primary verb. Once a title has been exploded, creators can access a “this, but” option, which allows them to...

Discord has laid off several dozen people from its marketing and entertainment partnerships teams.
The entertainment partnerships team was responsible for Discord’s push into courting larger communities, including celebrity- and content creator-led servers.
Discord–which has 150 million monthly users–launched in 2015 as a voice and text chat platform largely aimed at gamers. As such, its core functionality is private person-to-person chat, but it also allows users to create servers around any topic they want, and invite other users to join them. Servers can have thousands upon thousands of members, and over years became popular with people like musicians, indie game developers, and creators as a way to connect with their audiences.

‘Bikechess,’ a Dark Comedy About Journalism in Kazakhstan, Wins Karlovy Vary Works in Progress Award
Assel Aushakimova’s dark comedy about journalism in Kazakhstan “Bikechess” has won the Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Works in Progress award, which runs as part of the festival’s industry section, Eastern Promises. The section is focused on feature film projects from Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and North Africa.
The Kazakh film follows Dina, who works as a journalist for the national television station. The stories she is asked to report on are becoming increasingly absurd and full of praise for the government. Her love life is limited to a few secret meetings with her married cameraman. Dina looks after her young sister, a lesbian activist, who regularly finds herself in trouble with the authorities.

Colin and Samir are bringing their community to Discord.
The creator-interviewing duo is hooking up with Discord as their “thought partner” to launch a server where viewers will be able to introduce themselves, get to know one another, ask Colin and Samir questions, discuss creator economy news, and share their sources of creative inspiration.
Colin tells Tubefilter he and Samir–who have 1.2 million subscribers on their shared YouTube channel and tens of thousands of listeners for their podcasts The Colin and Samir Show and Creator Support–are focused on establishing stronger ties with their current audience members.

Spotter has spent $740 million on the creator economy. Colin and Samir took a look at that spending.
Two major players in the creator economy have joined forces. YouTubers, podcast hosts, and newsletter authors Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry (a.k.a. Colin and Samir) linked up with financing business Spotter to host a get-together called the Spotter Summit.
In a LinkedIn post, Chaudry explained how conversations with Spotter execs Aaron DeBevoise and Nic Paul evolved into a live event filled with keynotes, sessions, and workshops. After an extended series of talks, the Spotter Summit was born. Creators who flocked to Napa for the gathering included MrBeast, Deestroying, and members of Dude Perfect.
“Spotter has paid $740M to creators through catalog licensing deals with the effort of accelerating the growth of the creator economy,” Chaudry wrote. “But it’s not just acceleration through capital, it’s with knowledge. That was what first drew Colin Rosenblum and I to Spotter.”

It’s easy to forgive a lot in a romance if the chemistry is strong enough, and for the first couple episodes of Apple TV+’s Liaison, the sparks between Eva Green’s Alison and Vincent Cassel’s Gabriel seem reason enough to forge ahead. It hardly matters if we don’t really understand the international conspiracy that’s reunited these estranged exes, or that we don’t yet understand what transpired between them all those years ago. The smolder between them draws us in, even when all they’re doing is exchanging a wordless gaze through a rain-splattered window.
But without enough fuel to ignite a blaze, smolder is about as far as it gets. By the time Liaison stumbles to a close, whatever flickers of promise it showed early on have long since been stamped out by indifferent storytelling and a bloated run time.

A new PSA for Black and Missing Foundation will be part of the movie’s rollout featuring Beauvais, who is also executive producing the movie that’s inspired by actual stories of missing women of color.
Black Girl Missing tells the story of a mother named Cheryl (Beauvais) whose daughter Lauren (Iyana Halley) is nowhere to be found. Authorities and media dismiss Lauren as a runaway while focusing heavily on another missing girl, who is white. Cheryl and her 15-year-old daughter Marley (Taylor Mosby) enlist the help of a dedicated community of amateur internet sleuths to try to find Lauren.
