Bright Eyes pulled out all the stops to deliver a full-band performance of “Dance and Sing” Wednesday on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The track comes off the group’s 2020 album Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, which Rolling Stone said reminds listeners why frontman Conor Oberst “was one of the best singer-songwriters of the 2000s.”
Oberst, alongside longtime Bright Eyes members Nate Walcott and Mike Mogis, were backed by a large group of musicians, including a full strings section and horn players, for the performance.

Bright Eyes crank the amps up on their new cover of Elliott Smith’s “St. Ides Heaven.” The cover will appear on the group’s upcoming EP, Letting Off the Happiness: A Companion, which will arrive May 27 via Dead Oceans.
Where Smith’s original version of “St. Ides Heaven” is a tense, lo-fi acoustic track, Bright Eyes inject the song with a jolt of electricity, pairing crunching guitars with a swelling chorus of horns, synthesizers, strings, and more. Capping it all off, the song features back-up vocals from Conor Oberst...

Bright Eyes performed four songs — including three from their first album in nearly a decade — on the latest installment of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
The trio recorded their set with Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis performing at Arc Studios in Omaha, Nebraska, while Nate Walcott appeared at the Los Angeles studio, Lucy’s Meat Market, with Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond providing back-up vocals.

Greetings from the apocalypse! Hopefully this isn't the end, but I have to depart the sandblasted pages of this column for a brief sojourn across the wasteland. With a little luck, a lot of gasoline and the aid of a gangly autogyro pilot I should find my way back in a few months time, but until then enjoy this last weekend column … for now.

As I wrote earlier this week for Film.com, "2 Guns" will without a doubt take its place among the pantheon of extremely forgettable Denzel Washington action movies. Hell, the trailer could have been one of those parodies from the beginning of "Tropic Thunder.

Becky Stark made her debut as Lavender Diamond with 2007's Imagine Our Love, which was released that year—after fervent label interest—on Matador alongside a reissue of The Calvary Of Light Ep (which features the most excellent single “You Broke My Heart”). Since that wave-making debut, Stark has toured with The Decemberists and She & Him, appeared in movies with Harry Shearer and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, and cut a 7-inch with John C. Reilly for Jack White’s Third Man label. She’s obviously been a little busy, so it’s understandable that she’s only just ...

Third Man Records released John C. Reilly's music singles today, and the label is streaming two of those four covers tunes in full now. "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar" with Tom Brosseu and "I'll Be There If You Ever" with Lavendar Diamond's Becky Stark are up on the Third Man homepage. Jack White made contributions to both songs, and both singles. Check out that trill. As previously reported, Third Man is also releasing and reissuing several White Stripes rarity records, on Dec. 6.

Chicago – With their town ravaged by Hurricane Katrina and their neighborhood under government-ordered quarantine, one New Orleans couple decided to combine their artistic strengths into one cohesive project. Their goal was to portray their beloved city in a way that was strikingly different from the representation popularized by HBO’s “Treme.”

When it comes to feel-good viral potential, it's hard to think of a more potent duo than the band Ok Go and the Muppets.
As performers on The Green Album, a collection of Muppets covers by artists including Ok Go, My Morning Jacket and Weezer, the band behind the acclaimed "treadmill video" for "Here It Goes Again" got the chance to film another music video with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and their assorted friends.
The Huffington Post caught up with lead singer Damian Kulash at the 2011 Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco, where the band performed to an estimated audience of 45,000 at the festival's main stage. Kulash, an affable man with a Gap-clean aesthetic, who is clearly comfortable chatting with reporters, was eager to talk about the upcoming video and just how great it is to be on their own label, Paracadute.

Michel Gondry has directed a creative new video for indie trio The Living Sisters — who are not actual sisters — in which the ladies overcome a series of catastrophic events including accidents, fires, shootouts, airplane turbulence, and an earthquake as they travel to a hospital to celebrate the birth of a baby. Becky Stark, Inara George (of The Bird and the Bee, who was four months pregnant at the time of the shoot) and Eleni Mandell each have their own panel in the triptych format, which recalls movies like the original Thomas Crown Affair and Woodstock. The contrast of the jaunty, pleasant harmonizing with the apocalyptic destruction surrounding them (as well as the Matchbox cars) immediately marks it as Gondry's goofy, winking style. Gondry fans might also be put in mind of the split-screen video he directed for Cibo Matto's "Sugar Water" [...]...

Vanessa Lemor (Savanah Wiltfong) is your typical not-so-typical teenager, going through life overly focused on a boy, Philip. In a relationship (of some sort), Vanessa is surprised when Philip suddenly breaks things off, and it quickly becomes difficult to decide which of them has a bigger Philip infatuation.
In her effort to reconnect with (stalk) Philip, Vanessa decides to transfer to his private school, and because of her half-Eskimo heritage, she manages a scholarship. Of course, things do not work out quite according to plan, and Vanessa finds herself instantly on the bottom of the social ladder. She has to find a way to claw her way up if she wants Philip to pay attention to her, but she soon begins to wonder if she wants Philip, or wants out of her popularity exile.
That's the short version of Dear Lemon Lima, a spin on the classic coming-of-age formula that...

Individually, The Bird And The Bee vocalist Inara George, singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell, and Lavender Diamond frontwoman Becky Stark all have gentle, sweet, and uncompromisingly pleasant voices, so it’s not a stretch for them to turn in a collaborative effort that is gentle, sweet, and uncompromisingly pleasant. As The Living Sisters, the trio sticks to jazzy close-harmony tunes that are so deliberately retro they sound like pop standards, even though they’re not. Given the women’s collective vocal prowess, it’s unsurprising that their debut album, Love To Live, is consistently pitch-perfect in the literal sense. But the sweetly ...

Hey, it’s a film festival masquerading as an art gallery show! Or is it an art gallery show masquerading as a film festival? Whatever it is, it’s the Projections Festival of Rare and Hard to See Films curated by Aaron Rose and screening from Jan. 16 to Feb. 20 at the Roberts & Tilton gallery in Los Angeles.
Some of the films screening are short films by popular, indie film directors, such as Spike Jonze, Harmony Korine, Jean-Luc Godard, Miranda July and Roman Coppola. But there are also films by underground filmmakers like Sadie Benning, Matt McCormick, Brian Butler and the king of underground film, Jonas Mekas. And there’s a whole host more, too.
If you look over the schedule, which is posted in its entirety below, you’ll notice that there aren’t a lot of screening times listed. That’s because on each day a film, or a series of films,...

Will Roan of Amazing Baby performs onstage during the 2009 Lollapalooza Music Festival at Grant Park on August 7, 2009 in Chicago.
You may be thinking "did we flashback fiffteen years? Lollapalooza?" Actually, one of the great pop culture touchstones of the 90's was revived a few years ago, and plays at Grant Park in Chicago for two days every August (and just signed a deal with the city to keep it there through 2018). If nothing else, it's a chance to catch some hot new upcoming alternative bands like ... Depeche Mode.
Seriously though, take a look at this year's festival, and enjoy the fashion, and talent, and ... unique looks.

Just hours before they take the stage in front of 10,000 more fans across town on the first day of Lollapaloopza, the Decemberists got their feet wet Thursday night with a sweaty tune up show at Chicago's famed Metro rock club.
Veering from the current format of playing their latest concept album, Hazards of Love, in its entirety, the Portland band allowed the 1,000-plus die-hards to vote online for their favorites. The show opened with a 15-plus minute version of “The Tain,” from the Ep of the same name from 2004, which swayed and swooped like a drunken, seasick sailor’s song.
As a testament to their fans’ devotion, every dip and swirl of the song was greeted with whoops of joy, which only increased when the band next served up some exuberant pop with "July, July" and the triumphant rock of "The Rake’s Song" from Hazards. After the wistful folk of another nugget,...

SXSW is great for discovering new bands, so I try not to see many acts I've seen before. But not only did I check out The Decemberists' set Tuesday night at the IFC party with Gomez, I caught their full concert at Stubbs the next night. But Wednesday night's show marked the band's first public performance of their new concept album, The Hazards of Love. It was like watching an indie rock musical based on some long-lost Shakespearean tragedy. Here are seven random things about the show:
1. Playing the whole album without a break left the usually talkative Colin Meloy without any time to banter from the stage.
2. While Becky Starks sung the role of Margaret, Shara Worden sung the role of the Forest Queen and somebody's iPod played the role of the ghost of the three murdered children, Colin Meloy had double duty as William (the hero) and the...
