Loev, Sudhanshu Saria's debut feature film about two men who move between friends and lovers in India, has been making the festival rounds for the past 18 months, including winning Audience Awards at Frameline and TLVFest. In my review from 2015, I noted that the film is a "sensitive yet open portrait of love and sexuality". The film is now available to watch worldwide on Netflix, and for the occasion, a new poster has been issued. The poster was designed by Indian based design house Pigeon & Co. with oversight from Jahan Singh Bakshi and features the work of artist Rohan Pore. It's a gorgeous work of art, an artistic rendering of a shot from the film that perfectly captures the love and intimacy between...

“Sausage Party” may be a film about a hotdog that wants to have sex with a bun, but it still represents a watershed moment for Hollywood. The raunchy comedy that’s grossed $65 million after two weeks in theaters is the first R-rated CG animated movie. Co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, “Sausage Party” has sex, violence and curse words in a format that has always been reserved for family-friendly fare.

The movie features the voices of comedic stars like Rogen, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, James Franco and Paul Rudd playing anthropomorphized food items who discover their only reason for existing is to be eaten by humans. Directors Conrad Vernon (“Monsters vs. Aliens”) and Greg Tiernan (TV’s “Thomas & Friends”) have backgrounds in traditional animation aimed at children, but there’s nothing traditional about this deranged dark comedy.

It all begins with Once Upon a Time. Such a simple introduction for Belladonna of Sadness, a 1973 Japanese animated feature whose newly found legacy includes a decades-long disappearance, a dramatic re-emergence, and a growing reputation as a frenzied, pornographic freakout.
The final entry in anime elder statesman Osamu Tezuka‘s erotic Animerama trilogy has remained largely unknown to even the most die-hard cult cinephiles, a fate determined after its commercial failure bankrupted Tezuka’s production company, Muchi Films. That explains why the psychedelic feminist fairy tale fell by the wayside as similar X-rated animated contemporaries, including the T&A fantasies of Ralph Bakshi, lived on to titillate and traumatize poorly supervised video-age kids. Tim here. One of the most important events in animation in all of 2015 happened this week; it is important to stress that this doesn't mean it's also one of the best things. But the first new piece of animation from living legend Ralph Bakshi in almost 20 years is certainly worth spending a moment with, though now that I've seen the 22-minute Last Days of Coney Island – currently available for rental on Vimeo, where it just had its world premiere – I can't really claim that I want to stretch that moment out too long.

When we asked our staff to vote on the best comic book movie adaptations, we were afraid the results would consist only of superhero films. While there are many superhero movies listed below, it is great to see a bulk of non-Hollywood films appearing on the list as well. We set out to compile a list of 50 movies but as it were, we ended up with 5 ties, and so the list consists 55 films instead. Let us know if you think we missed something. Enjoy!

From Japanese anime to Disney via stop-motion, here are 18 animated films that are mystifyingly unavailable on Blu-ray...
Not all movies need to be seen in HD, but if there's one type of filmmaking that regularly benefits from the Blu-ray format, it's animation. Let us cite one example at random: My Neighbour Totoro. Until fairly recently, the only copy we had on the shelf was an early, imported version on DVD, which was grainy and a little washed-out.
When Studio Canal issued Totoro on Blu-ray in 2012, the difference in image quality was little short of a revelation: Hayao Miyazaki's colours and fluid lines positively shimmered. In short, it was like seeing this fresh, sun-drenched film again for the first time.
The same could be said for so many other animated films, no matter what country they come from: in high-definition, we can truly...

One of the first animators to aim cartoons squarely at adults, Ralph Bakshi hasn't made a film since 1992, but his new Kickstarter-funded project "Last Days of Coney Island" has him working again, and BAMcinematek is presenting a tribute to the Brooklyn-born innovator. "Cool Worlds: The Animation of Ralph Bakshi" will feature seven out of Bakshi's nine animated features, leaving out his adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings" and his Frank Frazetta collaboration "Fire and Ice." The series will instead focus on Bakshi's more idiosyncratically edgy, highly political, sexual, and often controversial films. The series will begin with Bakshi's second feature, the autobiographical "Heavy Traffic," which follows inner-city cartoonist Michael Corleone (yes, you read that right), who escapes his troubled family life by getting involved in an equally violent New York street life. The film was Bakshi's biggest critical success and was a huge influence on the work of Jonathan Lethem.

The film has been made on a whopping budget of 125 Crores, so let’s hope that it does well when it releases in cinemas on 11 April 2014.

Any young gun can co-star in a successful feature with a proven star by his or her side (see potential stars Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds ride Denzel’s coattails in Unstoppable and Safe House, respectively). To prove your name is valuable above a film’s title, you must lead it, meaning you are both the film’s star and the film’s marketing campaign. At some point (usually early on), these ambitious pseudo-celebs must go for it, headlining a somewhat small, but significant, studio picture in the hopes of finding an audience they’ve been told by their agents and managers they have already built.

Wizards is an interesting animated film. At first glance, it is about good vs. evil as the film sets up a clear dichotomy in the beginning. That idea travels through the whole film and never becomes convoluted, but Wizards is more than that. Magic, technology, and Armageddon play a large role as well. The film wants to spread some sort of message about the errors of mankind’s ability to create things that kill and it also wants to promote believing in some sort of indefinable magic. I wanted to start off talking about this because Wizards is not an ordinary animated film and to an extent, not even a kid’s film. Wizards is mature in its own right, and should be. This spewed out of the mind of Raplh Bakshi, so, why would it be normal?

Anusha Rizvi, her name may ring a bell, thanks to her critically acclaimed film Peepli Live (2010). Well Anusha who seemed to have taken a sabbatical will soon be returning with her next titled Sea Of Poppies.
The film is based on Amitav Ghosh's book by the same title which was short listed for the Man Booker prize. The story is an adventure set against the backdrop of the opium trade during the British rule in India during the nineteenth century. Besides this, the film will be a typical masala entertainer with a love angle, a revenge saga, adventure and action set against the backdrop of the sea. Anusha will be co-directing the film with Mehmood Farooqui who has worked with her for the past ten years.
Apart from this the film will also delve into the history of India as well as breach the topic of the formation of Mumbai...

The following is taken from the film’s review when it was featured as part of the 2011 Stella Artois St. Louis International Film Festival this past November.
Chico And Rita is a dazzling, musical feature-length animated film that uses many modern techniques while harkening back to a time, not too long ago, when American studios flirted with the idea of animation geared to more adult stories. Now this is not to say that the great Pixar films don’t have adult themes but their finished stories are “kid-friendly”. Forty years ago Ralph Bakshi was heading the charge for movie cartoons to compete for mature audiences. As Fritz the Cat said in the ads, ” I’m X-rated and animated! “. Soon Bakshi’s toned down th more extreme elements in his features ( ending his run with Wizards, American Pop, and his take on Tolkein ) while other studios explored the territory with Watership Down and Heavy Metal.

I recently re-watched Contagion, and i had a flashback to my original viewing of it… Many months ago I trekked to the local cinema with the wife for the perfect date movie – Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion. Sitting there in the ambient darkness, waves of trailers washing over me, something suddenly caught my eye. A family of two adults, and two young children, were making their way down the stairway and corralling themselves four seats in the lower corner of the room. Were they in the wrong screening? Lion King 3D was playing next door, maybe they’d gotten lost. Should I tell them? It would be irresponsible of me not to, right? No one (and I mean No One) wants to miss the opening of Lion King. A plethora of exotic wildlife painstakingly animated as they make a pilgrimage across the Serengeti to the banal sounds of Elton John’s...

The year is 1977. A movie is released that unexpectedly re-shapes pop culture. Featuring radically new special effects and an imaginative world filled with fantastic characters, the film breaks new ground in its mediumn. Overcoming a limited budget and difficult production, the film is embraced by audiences and is still cherished for its place in cinematic history today.
Well, what were you expecting?
Celebrating it’s 35th anniversary, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards has been released on Blu-ray. The film is a high-fantasy epic combining traditional cel animation, rotoscope and live-action footage. The concoction of techniques provides a appropriate backdrop for the unusual piece.
We start with a bang as the earth is literally consumed by explosions, caused by terrorist attacks, no less. Three million years after the apocalypse, the earth has seen the rise of two factions: the good, magical elves and the evil, technology-driven mutants. The story centers on the leaders of both sides,...

I am reminded of a sensational documentary, now a decade old, on deaths in British police custody – haven't seen it? Ask why
The news about the Lawrence verdict and sentencing took me back to the mid-1990s – the case has been hanging for such a shameful length of time – when we journalists stood around gaping at Paul Dacre's sensational "Murderers" headline in the Daily Mail, and discussing what it all meant. (The paper challenged the five suspects to sue: did that mean sue for criminal libel? For which legal aid was available? Well, they didn't sue.)
My next thought was to pick up the phone and call the film-maker Ken Fero, who, with Tariq Mehmood, directed one of the most sensational documentaries I think I've ever reviewed: the 2001 film Injustice: The Movie. This was about the extraordinary, continuing phenomenon of black and Asian people dying mysteriously in police custody without any prosecution being brought.

Before Peter Jackson made his definitive version of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, fantasy fanatics had to settle for Ralph Bakshi’s animated take on the beloved books. That film (which only told part of the story) made money, but Bakshi never got to finish his tale. The film was notable mostly for its extensive use of rotoscoping, a technique where animators trace over live action footage for insertion into animated features. It’s not nearly as cool as Jackson’s films – but if you’re a fan of the Middle Earth stories, you really should track down a copy and check it out. Back in 2008, Bakshi and some friends released a book titled Unfiltered – which was set to feature a chapter filled with concept art from his take on Tolkien’s...

Starring Shahrukh Khan, Suniel Shetty, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao
Only Bollywood could seamlessly blend a terrorist thriller and a family melodrama into one heart-wrenching, action-packed entertainer with a comic college setting—while making a strong statement about religious nationalism to boot.
The film's hero, Major Ram Sharma (Shahrukh Khan), tries to mend two broken families—his own and that of his boss, General Bakshi (Kabir Bedi), who is estranged from his daughter, Sanjana (Amrita Rao)—which would be enough story for a film, but this was directed by Farah Khan—her first as a director—whose motto is "more is more." So she puts them all in mortal danger at the hands of a terrorist, Raghavan (Suniel Shetty). Kudos to her for pulling this mashup off with aplomb.

Robert Rodriguez delivered all sorts of cool news while at Sdcc 2011, and maybe one of the neatest is his live-action attempt at Fire & Ice, which was a Ralph Bakshi animated film from 1983.
Rodriguez explained that he wished to use Frank Frazetta’s wonderful paintings as inspiration like he did for Frank Miller in Sin City. No start date or stars announced.
In 1983, Ralph Bakshi used rotoscoping to try to adapt Frazetta’s work into animation. The film has since gone to become a cult item, much like the other Bakshi films (Fritz the Cat, Wizards). A tiny village is destroyed by a surging glacier, which serves as the deadly domain for the evil Ice Lord, Nekron. The only survivor is a young warrior, Larn, who vows to avenge this act of destruction. The evil continues, however, as Nekron’s palace of ice heads straight towards Fire Keep, the great fortress...

Director Robert Rodriguez, who recently produced the hotly anticipated Predators, has acquired the rights for Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta’s 1983 animated film, Fire and Ice. The screenplay for the original film was written by Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas, with characters created by Bakshi and Frazetta. The film was created with rotoscoping (shooting the film in live action and then tracing it onto animation cells) and released by 20th Century Fox.
Speaking with AICN – Rodriguez said,

What’s cool is, unlike past projects that I’d get involved with that would get stalled for various reasons, I control the rights to this one. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez tells AICN that he's acquired remake rights to Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta's 1983 animated feature "Fire and Ice".
Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas penned the original, a Conan-esque fantasy adventure in which a villager and the princess of the land of Firekeep team to stop the evil Queen of Icepeak from destroying the world with glaciers.
The film used rotoscoping, the technique where animation is drawn on top of live action (ala. "Tron," Bakshi's animated "The Lord of the Rings"). Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios will produce the remake.

Chicago – Last week we covered the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of “Lord of the Rings” and even had a chat with Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop about the Best Picture-winning film from director Peter Jackson. There may be a few fans of that series out there who don’t know that Jackson, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and Ian McKellen weren’t the first to go to Middle Earth. Ralph Bakshi went there over three decades ago and his animated “Lord of the Rings” is now on Blu-ray for the first time.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Watching it now, Bakshi’s “Lord of the Rings” feels like an interesting historical relic but you really have to put yourself in the shoes of a 1978 movie goer to thoroughly appreciate it. We already knew that multi-talented artist RZA was writing and directing a martial arts genre mash-up titled Iron Fist. Admittedly around these parts we’re pretty big fans of RZA and excited to see what he’s got to offer but if this recent interview with La Times is any indication, there’s good reason for it too. In the mix is Tarantino who appears to be a great influence to the musician turned director, Eli Roth who, love him or hate him, knows what he’s doing, and Jim Jarmusch. Can’t wait until we finally have some footage.

South and east Asian actors may be enjoying higher profiles in the Us on the small screen, but in mainstream films they haven't moved far away from comedy sidekicks and stereotypes
No sooner had the BBC told us that south Asian actors had never had it so good in the Us – more recognition, higher-profile roles – than Variety came along to crush that bright-eyed optimism into bitter, scowl-making resentment.
In one survey of the state-of-Asian-actors-in-Hollywood, there's excitement and hope: the last decade has seen a steady emergence of faces, if not memorable than at least vaguely familiar, with significant telly parts in ER, Lost and Heroes. Brown faces are making it big(gish). Hooray! In the other, there's weary hand-wringing at the persistent lack of awards acknowledgement for south – and indeed east Asian – actors in film, despite cross-cultural epics such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Babel otherwise being nominated for gongs across the board.

Marco Garibaldi, the colorful entrepreneur and Hollywood writer-producer, is getting back in the entertainment game after a decade-long absence, forming a new production company that will produce a remake of the Peter Sellers cult hit "The Party."
Garibaldi, perhaps best known in celebrity circles for a longtime romantic involvement with Priscilla Presley, is an Italian screenwriter and producer who has dabbled in a number of areas, helping turn Graceland merchandising into big business and even directing several episodes of the "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" television show.
His new banner, Godfather Entertainment, will aim to make movies in the $20 million range in a manner he says will be more efficient than the one practiced by the studios, and will attract talent by coming up with creative back-end deals. "The studios are in business to spend money," he said. "I want to make movies for less and put every dime of it on the screen."
The hyphenate said he also is in the process of securing a debt facility with an unnamed bank.
Among its projects, Godfather will team with Avi Lerner's Nu Image Films for "Last Chance Motel," a psychological thriller that Garibaldi will write and direct with shooting planned for 2009. Godfather also is developing a mob movie titled "The Vault," written by Alex Merkin and Jesse Mittelstadt.
But Garibaldi's flagship project will be a remake of "Party," the Blake Edwards-directed film that has had a devoted following since its 1968 release by United Artists.
This version, however, will bear only small resemblance to the original.
The original film centered on Sellers' Hrundi V. Bakshi, a bumbling Indian extra accidentally invited to a glamorous Hollywood party, with Sellers hamming it up in a series of loosely connected vignettes.
In the new version, only part of the conceit is the same: a hapless blond Midwesterner will have his appearance changed to resemble an Indian by a zealous studio eager he fit a part. Garibaldi says that he sees the movie as ripe for a number of star cameos, all of whom will attend the titular party.
Garibaldi and "Sex and the City" writer-producer Darren Star had originally set up the project at MGM in 2003. After a series of corporate moves, it ended up at DreamWorks, which kept the project in development for several years. The rights reverted to Garibaldi two months ago, and he enlisted screenwriters Brandon Gibson and Jim Russo to help him write the new script.
Garibaldi says he can make the movie for a fraction of the budget it might have cost at DreamWorks, possibly for about $20 million.
Godfather also is the production company behind "Across the Hall," the Brittany Murphy romantic thriller directed by Merkin from a script he wrote with Mittelstadt and produced with NBA star Elton Brand's production banner. The film is close to finding domestic distribution and is likely to be released in 2009.
Garibaldi said he has high hopes for a company even in a tough market for independent and slate film financing.
"Everybody and their mother is now raising half a billion dollars," he said. "I want to go trench by trench. We're going to start with enough money to make a $20 million movie and then make another one and another one, and go from there."...
