The rise in critical acclaim for television shows over the years has been well-documented, with a corresponding rise in interest among viewers to discuss and analyse television the way films are at festivals. While festivals dedicated to television shows, such as Atx and PaleyFest, are on the rise, film festivals still outweigh them.
For its 2015 incarnation, however, the Toronto International Film Festival will be doing something unique, beginning a programme dedicated to television. Titled the Primetime Programme, the section of the festival will conduct screenings and Q&A sessions just like the films that play at Tiff, focusing on specific episodes of shows instead. The lineup for the inagural Primetime programme has now been announced, and can be seen below.

Interview Louisa Mellor 5 Jun 2013 - 07:00
We chat to The Returned’s director and producer about zombies, French fantasy TV, genre, style, Mogwai, and more…
“No tradition, status: non-existent” is the unequivocal reply from film and television producer Caroline Benjo when I ask her about the status of fantasy and sci-fi television in France. “A bit of Franju in the seventies perhaps, with L’Homme Sans Visage…”. Writer and director Fabrice Gobert agrees, “It’s not a very developed genre in French television. Perhaps it’s a question of culture”.
That culture is changing, chiefly thanks to Benjo and Gobert, the producer and director of Canal Plus’ Les Revenants, which arrives on Channel 4 this weekend as The Returned.

French supernatural thriller The Returned is coming to Channel 4 very soon, and well deserves your time...
If you watch just one exquisitely made, atmospheric, eight-part supernatural French drama set in a remote mountain village this year, make sure it's The Returned (Les Revenants).
Written and directed by Simon Werner a Disparu's Fabrice Gobert, The Returned channels the best of David Lynch, Six Feet Under and much more, by telling a human drama story with a fantastic premise.
No doubt thanks to the success of, amongst others, The Killing, Channel 4 is bringing us its first subtitled TV import for some years, and has demonstrated real savvy and taste in its choice. The series picked up accolades when it aired in France last year, meaning, thankfully, that a second series is currently being written for transmission in 2014.
An English-language remake led by Paul Abbott...

The nominations for this year’s César Awards (France’s Oscar equivalent) has been announced. In addition the awards ceremony has also chosen Quentin Tarantino as the recipient of the ceremony’s honorary award. Alain Terzian, the president of the Académie des arts et techniques du cinéma announced at a press conference this morning confirmed that the director would be present to ick up his award in person.
It is also worth noting that there are three American movies among the seven nominees for Best Foreign Film: Inception, The Social Network and perhaps the biggest surprise, Invictus.

Sonic Youth cleaned their closets and dug through hidden, long forgotten, boxes to put together this mix tape for you today. You can feel the weight just looking at it. It's got a couple gems from 1988, demos from "Daydream Nation," some "unknown" licky guitar pieces marked only "1988 Lee demo" (noise guitar hero Lee Ranaldo) and as Pitchfork points out, "the acoustic version of 'Star Power' that they played on the 2009 episode of "Gossip Girl" where Rufus and Lily got married."
Also featured on this nostalgically teasing cassette stream are a couple songs from the French murder mystery,"Simon Werner A Disparu" (Us title "Lights Out") about a group of highschoolers in the suburbs of Paris caught up in the disappearance of a classmate -- with original music by Sonic Youth. Three U.S. films are among the seven nominees for best foreign film in this year’s César Awards, France’s version of the Oscars. Meanwhile, American director Quentin Tarantino has been selected to receive an honorary award and will be at the Feb. 25 ceremony in Paris to accept it, it was announced Friday.
The three American films cited by the Académie des arts et techniques du cinema are Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” David Fincher’s “The Social Network” and Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus,” an Oscar contender in the States last year.
Xavier Beauvois’ “Of Gods and Men” (“Des hommes et des Dieux”) — not one of the nine films still in contention for the best foreign film Oscar — leads with 10 nominations, while Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” and Joann Sfar’s “Gainsbourg” (“Vie Héroïque”) are also nominated in multiple categories.
Presiding over this year’s awards is American actress and director Jodie Foster.

Sonic Youth's next release will be a film soundtrack and one you may never have heard of -- the French murder mystery "Simon Werner a Disparu" premiered at Cannes, but has no Us distributor (though IMDb lists it with the Us/UK title "Light's Out"). TwentyFourBit reveals the soundtrack will at least get a release, January 25th digitally with a Tba physical release to follow.
The film's set in the early 90's in a small town outside Paris where teens disappear against the discordant wonder of Sonic Youth. Here's the synopsis from Cannes, awkwardly translated from the French:
During an alcohol fuelled party, teenagers discover a body that seems lifeless hidden in the bushes of a forest.
Two weeks earlier. Simon Werner, a senior in the Science curriculum of the Leon Blum high school has not shown up for class. Blood stains are found in a class-room. Run-away, kidnap,...

Fabrice Gobert's Simon Werner A Disparu has two problems. First, though selected to screen in the Un Certain Regard program at Cannes 2010 it was programmed very late in the festival, in the waning days when many have already left and gone home for a nice, long nap. And so it was largely overlooked. And, second, it is saddled with sadly unimaginative sales agents who decided to ditch Simon Werner Has Disappeared - both accurate and highly evocative - as the international title in favor of the terminally bland and largely meaningless Lights Out. Here's how Cannes described the film:
March 1992 in a small town in the suburbs of Paris.
During an alcohol fuelled party, teenagers discover a body that seems lifeless hidden in the bushes of a forest

South Korean comedy Hahaha has won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard strand at the Cannes Film Festival.

Hong Sangsoo's feature, made on a budget of just $$100,000, centres on a movie director and critic who share stories about their visits to the seaside town of Tong-yeong. It held off competition from films such as Chatroom, Aurora and Simon Werner A Disparu to take home the coveted prize.

What many critics suspected has turned out to be true: this year's line-up at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival has been disappointing. Many have complained that the films as a whole have been overlong, dark, depressing, and lacking hope. I would tend to agree with most of these criticisms. After a week of searching, I was finally able to find a film that is much more "my speed" than the rest of the selections. Fabrice Gobert's Lights Out is a film set in a suburban French high school during the early 1990's where a student named Simon Werner has disappeared. Did he run away? Was he abducted? Murdered? The movie begins at a drunken house party, where two teenagers go for a walk and discover a dead body in the woods. Is it Simon's body? But the story begins ten days earlier, and we see through the perspective of four...

The official English title for this film is Lights Out, but that's such a bland and unrepresentative title, I'm sticking with the official French title - Simon Werner A Disparu... (with the ellipses), which translates to Simon Werner Disappeared... This is yet another new festival favorite that I discovered rather late in the fest, but I'm ecstatic that I caught it, because it was a breath of fresh air in a line-up that I haven't otherwise been impressed by this year. Simon Werner is, essentially, a fun lightweight exercise in the world of skewed high school gossip by way of a murder mystery. It's not a complete home run, but it was pretty damn good. Although this is a high school film about a group of teens, it's not at all like "Degrassi" nor is it even similar to the documentary American Teen, but it is still an amusing look...

The Festival de Cannes lives up to its name in its selection of its first 16 Competition Films from 13 countries. But an international cry went up when at the first announcement not a single picture was directed by a woman in the Competition area. (Last year there were directors Jane Campion, Isabel Coixet and Andrea Arnold.) However, the Closing Night film was just announced and it is Julie Bertucelli’s The Tree, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marton Csokas and Aden Young. It will close the 63rd Festival de Cannes on Sunday, May 23rd following the Awards Ceremony. Memento is the international sales agent. Contacts for all films are listed below.

Updated 04/19 They've added two titles but none to the actual competition list just yet. Updates are included below
04/15 Yes, they will add a few titles. Looking round the web people expect something like 4 to 5 more films to show up. Speculation that Malick's Tree of Life or Nolans Inception or Schnabel's Miral probably won't die until after they add said missing titles. But if you're heading over to the South of France next month or merely reading along on various Twitter feeds or film blogs, these are some of the titles you'll be hearing about.
Blanchett. Crowe. Scott
Opening Night Film
Because you have to kick off with a starry entry for that maximum red carpet kick. It gets the international and mainstream press excited and you need their eyeballs... even if your festival is for the global cinephiles.
Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)
I'm amused that the tagline is marketing this as an "untold story". Hee.

Woody Allen is back again, but among the auteurs like Takeshi Kitano will be some other things we were expecting like Gregg Araki's Kaboom and L'autre monde from Gilles Marchand, both playing in the midnight section.

Only a few recognisable entires have made their way into the 63rd Cannes Film Festival line-up which has proven quite globally diverse this year.
High-profile films like arthouse darling Gregg Araki's new sexy sci-fi tale "Kaboom", Ridley Scott's big-budget epic "Robin Hood", Stephen Frears' graphic novel adaptation "Tamara Drewe", Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and Woody Allen's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" will all screen but won't be up for awards.
Mike Leigh's "Another Year", Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Biutiful" and Doug Liman's "Fair Game" are among the more higher profile entires in official competition this year. "Ringu" director Hideo Nakata's British feature "Chatroom" and Derek Cianfrance's Sundance entry "Blue Valentine" made unexpected but welcome appearances in the 'Un Certain Regard' line-up.
Most surprising are the omissions. Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" and Christopher Nolan's "Inception" will Not be screening,...

The lineup for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival set to run from May 12 - 23 was announced this morning in Paris, France at the Grand Hotel. On top of the information you'll read below, Twitter user OnTheCroisette added additional information as did ioncinema who specifically reports Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life is 'not ready'" and will not be included in the festival as was previously expected. OnTheCroisette said the Cannes selection committee saw a "copy" of the film, and "anything could happen in the coming weeks," but I'm not holding my breath.
Word from the press conference is that we can expect four to six additional films announced over the coming days/weeks. What will they be? Olivier Assayas's Carlos? Julian Schnabel's Miral? Francois Ozon's Potiche? Bruce Robinson's Rum Diary? Take a look at the list and my brief commentary below and let us know what you think.

Well… hot off the presses… here’s the list for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, which will head-juried this year by Tim Burton.
Although, from what I’m hearing, this isn’t definitive, as some films are still yet to be announced. However, here are those that have… I’ll scrub through it later for any films that should be highlighted on this blog. But, I’ll say right now that there’s just 1 black film on this list – Un homme qui crie by Chadian filmmaker, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. Long-time readers of this blog should recognize his name. He was the mastermind behind a film called Daratt.
Take a peek (the list will be updated throughout the day, as necessary):
• In Competition (Country of origin in parentheses):
“The Housemaid” by Im Sang-soo (Sk)
“Poetry” by Lee Chan-dong (Fr/Sk)
“Outrage” by Takeshi Kitano (Jp)
