For as much as Martin Scorsese's 1976 classic "Taxi Driver" pushes you directly into the darkest parts of the human experience, few things are as disturbing as the character of preteen sex worker Iris (Jodie Foster). Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), the titular driver, spots her early on in a haunting glimpse from the taxi window, just one horrifying part of the movie's grim and grimy texture. But in the movie's second half, we get to know her better, as Travis devotes his violent energy and obsessiveness to the mission of her rescue, knowing (and maybe even hoping) he will likely die as a result.
Because of Iris's complex and deeply sad situation, there was a great deal of sensitivity involved in bringing the character to life. Foster was just 12 years old when cast in the film, and the character of Iris was a far cry from the typical expectations of a child star.

Wellington, July 31 (Ians) The New Zealand government has officially congratulated the country’s national women’s football team, the Football Ferns, on their performances at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson on Monday thanked the team for their achievements at the tournament, saying they had inspired the nation, won their opening match and shown skill and determination through all their games, Xinhua reported.
New Zealand faltered in their quest to make history in the Women’s World Cup, ending their home campaign here on Sunday in third place in Group A following a disappointing draw with Switzerland.
The Kiwis yearned to progress to the round of 16, but this stalemate, coupled with Norway’s comfortable victory over the Philippines, resulted in the co-hosts bowing out at the group stage on goal difference to Norway.

The 2023 Women’s World Cup kicked off as planned in Auckland on Thursday, with the co-hosting nation New Zealand triumphing in the opening match against Norway just hours after a lone shooter killed two people and injured six others in the city.
Veteran New Zealand striker Hannah Wilkinson secured her team victory against Norway, which won the tournament in 1995, with a goal three minutes into the second half.
The victory came just hours after the centre of Auckland was shutdown when a gunman, later named as 24-year-old Matu Tangi Matua Reid, entered a construction site and began shooting, killing two people and injuring six others.
He was found dead at the scene after a shootout with police. The motive for his shooting spree is unknown.
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the situation had been contained and there was no risk to national security.

After a scandal that rocked Ireland in recent days over national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (Rte) overpaying presenter Ryan Tubridy, the country’s government has ordered two separate reviews into the scandal.
The matter led to the suspension and subsequent resignation of Rte director general Dee Forbes, a former high-level Discovery executive.
On Tuesday, Ireland’s Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin T.D., announced that she will be commissioning an independent, root and branch examination of Rte composed of two separate and parallel reviews: a review of governance and culture; and a review of contractor fees, human resources and other matters.
The reviews will each be directed by two different three-person expert advisory committees who will oversee the work of a professional services firm that will be appointed to work on the reviews. The committees will work in parallel and coordinate where applicable and...

Kelsea Ballerini made her feelings about the Tennessee drag ban known during her performance at the 2023 CMT Music Awards Sunday.
Ballerini, who also served as the night’s co-host, transported the audience backyard barbecue in the ’60s, where she was surrounded by a bevy of drag queens while belting out her hit, “If You Go Down (I’m Goin’ Down Too)”.
The group served as Ballerini’s backup dancers, while the singer sang and strummed along on a pink guitar. After throwing her long, green coat to the side, Ballerini showed off a yellow two-piece, which she strutted her stuff in while the drag queens followed behind — all dressed in their best ’60s-inspired wears.
The performance ended with a flutter of confetti that was illuminated with rainbow stage lights, which made Ballerini’s stance loud and clear.
Et spoke to the drag queens — Kennedy Davenport, Manila Luzon, Jan Sport and...
