The zombie genre is one that appears to have nothing new at this point. We seem to have seen every possible variation through various movies, books, and games. Which is why the manga “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” written by Haro Aso and illustrated by Kotaro Takata quickly became known as a fun and fresh take on the old zombie apocalypse setup when first printed in 2018 in the magazine “Monthly Sunday Gene-x”. Last year saw two adaptations; the Netflix movie directed by Yusuke Ishida and the 12-episode anime series directed by Kazuki Kawagoe and produced by studio Bug Films. Whilst the film was an enjoyable romp, it never felt like it was able to make the most of the manga's premise. The anime, however, was one of the most enjoyable shows of 2023 and had something truly special about it. And I'm not talking about the zombie shark.

San Francisco, CA – Today, Viz Media as part of its Viz Originals line launches a one-shot submissions portal which will see American aspiring creators published alongside Japanese legends including Rumiko Takahashi, Junji Ito and Haro Aso via the Viz Manga digital service. The new platform will produce bite-size original manga stories covering a variety of interests from horror to comedy and from action to romance, all locally created by debut and seasoned writers.
The Japanese one-shot model for serialization boasts the most influential and successful track record on the planet for launching debut manga creators. It is a model in which a one-shot (a complete story running between 15 – 60 pages) is published for an already built-in audience who then determine whether it should go on to be serialized as a manga series.

As unrealistic as zombie apocalypses are, the main character in Netflix’s movie 100 Zom: Bucket List of the Dead is easy to relate to. At the start of this live-action adaptation of Haro Asō’s manga, Akira Tendō (Eiji Akaso) is annoyingly chipper as he starts his new job. Soon enough, though, reality hits Akira like a bullet train, and he becomes yet another exploited employee at his workplace. While his misery appears to be eternal, Akira is eventually given a second chance at life as a zombie virus overwhelms the world.
Upon learning of mankind’s fate, one caused by a mysterious and contagious virus, Akira is ecstatic. He doesn’t have to go to work anymore now that most everyone is either dead or zombified. As inappropriate as his first reaction seems, the story prefaces the chaos with enough evidence of why someone like Akira would rejoice in such a dire situation.

Japanese movies can do it all; they could be thought-provoking and real-life-inspired films like Plan 75, which addresses the growing older population in Japan, as well as mindless anime adaptations like Assassination Classroom. In short, Japanese cinema boasts some of the most fantastic actors and talented directors in the world today, and Yusuke Ishida’s Zom 100 is no exception to the rule. Adapted from a manga by Haro Aso, this live-action movie is a young man’s journey towards freedom from corporate slavery and learning to follow his heart amidst a world infested by zombies. Starring Eiji Akaso, Mai Shiraishi, and Shuntaro Yanagi, among others, the movie shines as a horror comedy with a tinge of slice-of-life mixed into it, as Akira Tendo (Akaso) rediscovers himself when his surroundings are overrun by zombies. Read on for an exhaustive review of Zom 100, we hope this is right up your alley.

“Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” is a comedy movie directed by Yusuke Ishida. It is based on the manga series of the same name by Haro Aso and Kotaro Takata. It stars Eiji Akaso as Akira Tendo.
Are you looking for a well-crafted comedy that is both relaxed and visually appealing? “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” successfully combines these aspects and delivers more than what it promises in a film.
Storyline
Akira wakes up one day to find himself in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. The world is in chaos, and everyone has been turned into zombies.
But not everything is a disaster, because Akira is happy that he doesn’t have to go to work.

Zombie apocalypse and dystopic worldview have been explored in the manga and anime scene in a multitude of different ways—set in the far future or made as a period piece, as survival drama, or in the hack and slash action genre. But rarely has the set-up been implemented with such ingenuity as it has been in Zom 100: Bucket List Of The Dead, created by Haro Aso and Kotaro Takata. The plot revolves around a pretty basic premise: what would you want to be if all your societal burdens became non-existent? Of course, the opportunity is provided by the aforementioned scenario of the zombie apocalypse, which brings a contrasting yet unique tone to the narrative.
Netflix’s live-action movie adaptation of Zom 100 is about to premiere tomorrow, and to give viewers an idea of what to expect from the feature, we would like to discuss a few initial volumes of the manga.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The purpose of this column has always been to highlight anime that newcomers could jump into without prior knowledge of the medium, shows that hopefully act as a gateway to a medium full of incredible possibilities. Recently, I've been trying to avoid brand-new shows, and instead focus on shining a light on older classics and relatively more modern but still underseen anime — basically, shows that you don't hear about trending on social media.
That being said, a brand new show comes along sometimes and surpasses anticipations and expectations to deliver a viewing experience so unique and thrilling I am left with no choice but to immediately write about it in the hopes that everyone catches up before the season ends. That is the case with this month's anime: "Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.

This article contains spoilers for Alice in Borderland season 2.
When the credits rolled on Alice in Borderland’s season 2 finale, fans of the J-horror survivor series were left with a melancholy taste. Did our favorite horde of badass women and wistfully sad men survive? Yes, but likely not in the way that viewers expected – unless they previously read Haro Aso’s manga series.
Sure, Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) reunite in Tokyo, but one that’s been decimated by a meteorite crash. We learn that the life-or-death battles we’ve witnessed throughout the show were a purgatory-like test for players. Anyone parkouring off of buildings, dodging arrows, or attempting to outwit rigged explosives was competing with their will to survive in the real world. If they persisted, they’d have a chance to escape this realm and live again.
Given that explanation, the death-by-sky-lasers take on a somber...

A lot of time in “Alice in Borderland” is spent talking about different worlds. There’s the one that its characters find themselves in and the one that they want to return to. The first is a largely-abandoned Tokyo, with only a fraction of its citizens left to roam the streets after being mysteriously transported there. One afternoon, Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and some friends duck into a bathroom to hide and emerge to find their city almost entirely empty.
In this Netflix show based on Haro Aso’s manga, Arisu is just one of a roughly undefined group of people looking to stay alive in their new alternate reality, where each person staves off death by playing wickedly manipulative games designed to pit players against each other and themselves. Each game corresponds to specific playing card in a deck. The higher the stakes, the longer the reward for making it through to the end.

The twisted competition at the center of "Alice in Borderland" is back, and it looks like the games aren't done just yet. A "super teaser trailer" for season 2 of the popular show, which is based on the manga series of the same name by Haro Aso, was revealed during Netflix's Tudum fan event, and it looks like we're in for another wild ride.
The teaser shows the return of protagonists Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) after that massive cliffhanger at the end of the last season. After completing a number of increasingly deadly challenges, they learned to their dismay that there are even more coming as the games enter a second phase. We also get our first look at some of the other contestants roped into the games, as well as shots of the sadistic gamemaster Mira (Riisa Naka), who looks to be a more menacing presence this season.

"Squid Game" was a global phenomenon when it premiered on Netflix last year and quickly took the world by storm. But while everyone became obsessed with its deathly competition, it is far from the first TV show or movie to play with that premise.
Another similar show about a group of people playing death games is the vastly underrated "Alice in Borderland," a Japanese TV show based on a popular manga of the same name by Haro Aso. This show takes more of a sci-fi approach to its death games, as it follows a group of people somehow transported to a completely deserted Tokyo where...

Where to Watch “Alice in Borderland”: Netflix
Showing a completely deserted city center is an eerie trick. When it happens near the beginning of the Netflix series “Alice in Borderland,” it happens in broad daylight, with a bustling Tokyo empty and echoing. Even setting aside the real-world analogues of the not-too-distant past, there’s something about the way the series lets three characters bathe in that silence as they run across deserted highway lanes in search of anyone else who might still be left.
Before that trio gets a chance to really parse out why they’re seemingly alone in this alternate population-sparse reality, things take an even bigger turn: Entering a mysterious building locks them into a survival game with simple rules and a complex path to getting out alive.
This “win or be killed” premise is a major part of what...

By the time Lmd had last interviewed Director Sato Shinsuke at 2018's Japan Cuts film festival premiere of Bleach, he was already pre-producing his epic adaptation, Kingdom, and lining up his next project; an eight-part miniseries that would mark his first collaboration with Netflix Japan. Based on a manga by Haro Aso, Alice in Borderland begins as the story of three aimless slacker pals, who suddenly find themselves in a Tokyo devoid of all humanity, except for a handful of strangers forced to play daily games of survival. On a video call from Tokyo, Director Sato talked about pushing the envelope of violence and gore, the series’ uncanny parallels with today’s pandemic realities, and the hope that can be found in its message....
